2. Opening Sequence
An opening sequence is the first scene of the film.
It consists of a few minutes. It contains the title
sequence, establishing shot, production house title
etc.
3. •Codes are those tools which are
necessary in making of a movie e.g.
production house logos, establishing
shots and sound track.
•Conventions are those tools which
can or cannot be used in making of a
movie e.g. narration and action
sequence.
4. Flashback
It is a scene which is in a time earlier than the main story e.g. in the
movie tangled, titanic and guardians of galaxy. It is a convention. In
tangled it is used to show who Rapunzel was and how she ended up in
her tower.
5. Establishing shot
It is the first shot of a film which shows the setting of a
film. It is mostly a wide shot. It’s a code. Time and era of
film can also be shown through establishing shot.
6. Narration
Narration is a convention. It is the commentary delivered
to accompany a film e.g. in the film Matilda. It is an
effective way of getting the audience’s attention.
7. Action Scene
It is also a convention.
This is when the movie
starts with an action
scene e.g. Mission
Impossible.
9. Production House Logo
It is the logo of the producer company of a film.
Production Logo is a code.
10. Title Sequence
It is also a code. It consists of the main cast of the film
and the names of directors and producers etc.
11. Animation
Animation is a convention. It is when movie starts with
an animation e.g. the movie “Enchanted” and “Mary
Poppins 2”.
12. Compilation of Photographs
Compilation of Photographs is a convention. It is when
the opening sequence is made up of photographs
combined together e.g. the movie “Blue valentine” and
“Dead Silence”
13. Narrative Content
Narrative Content is a code. It is the content of a story.
The following questions are answered:
• Where is the story set?
• What event starts the story?
• Who are the main characters?
• What conflict do they face? What is at stake?
• What happens to the characters as they face this conflict?
• What is the outcome of this conflict?
• What is the ultimate impact on the characters?
14. Sound Track
Sound track is the music which is
added to the film. It should be
according to the theme of the
movie. Sound track is also a
code.
15. Enigma
Enigma is using a mystery
element so that audiences are
attracted to watching the film
e.g. “now you see me”.
