2. Career Overview
20 years in Technical Operations management
Excellent reputation in the marine industry with global network
Consensus builder and promoter of win-win results
Tackled and resolved unique marine technical issues
Spear headed change management initiatives and cruise brand
redesign
6. Case Study I:
Common Rail engine reliability issues and implementation of a
prototype upgrade in service.
7. Case Study I: Challenges
Lack of trust and ineffective management of expectations prevented
open exchange of ideas while the resolution was been developed
Personality classes within the organization and a blame culture
OEM internal constraints prevented allocation of vital resources
The threat of lawsuits stalled necessary actions to stabilize the engines
performance in anticipation to the upgrade
8. Case Study I: Actions/Objectives
Identified change agents in the OEM’s organization and development of a
base of trust.
Initiated standing conference calls with senior sponsors of this effort from both
organizations.
Established a tight protocol for the safe and reliable first installation/upgrade
with a specific engine performance criteria mutually agreed.
Established comfort level on the merit of the upgrade by surveying main
supply chain key production areas (factories) for critical components and
performed quality assurance audits.
Communicated at regular intervals with the candidate ships soliciting input at
every critical step of the preparation process.
Selected senior engineer as project on-sight manager for the first ships engine
upgrades and developed the communication protocols for advising both
organizations of progress.
9. Case Study I: Results
Success of first installation led to the planning and execution of the upgrades
on remaining 6 ships.
Reliability of these engines improved dramatically reaching in many
occasions above company’s fleet average.
Reduction of unscheduled down-times resulted a year later in the signing of
a multi-engine multi-year maintenance agreement valued in excess of 60M$.
Relationship between parties improved and the relationship is excellent
today with multiple orders been put for future ships’ main engines.
10. Case Study I : Testimonials
“Ioannis demonstrates a strong penchant for project management and
applies his skills in this area in all aspects of his work.
He is always keen to take on additional work and is currently leading a
working group on the very important Alaska 2010 permit compliance issue.
He has shown excellent initiative in the independent development of a
number of fleet and ship projects and operating procedures, to the benefit of
the department.
Notable is the development of procedures with the technical purchasing
department and lately his work on Wartsila common rail issues and the
development of the CR1+ project for the ships. An excellent performance –
well done.”
11. Case Study II
Design and installation of an additional diesel generator on two
ships
14. Case Study II: Challenges
Compressed Project Design Timeline Impacted efficient Cost Control &
Implementation
Initial Project Financial Assessment carried out without detailed work scope
information
Significant Structural, Cabling and Pipework installations required works while
ship was in service
Complexity of project created friction with various stakeholders and
relationships had to be managed.
Personality clashes between functional leaders and project team
In house Purchasing and Logistics departments inexperience
15. Case Study II: Actions/Objectives
Engine selected based on comparison matrix supporting QC survey of
factory and prototype commercial installation.
Established project responsibility matrix and incorporated it in the contract
Established Project War Room to manage progress and provide updates.
Established core group of knowledge experts tasked to sign off each critical
stage of the specification and installation.
Instituted on board project team to provide daily progress via specifically
designed reporting tools.
Led the preparation and execution of a 21 day dry-docking to install
prefabricated section. Vessel was safe to sail 48 hours ahead of schedule.
Coordinated commissioning tests and advised all relevant parties to ensure
smooth execution of critical tests.
16. Case Study II: Results
Solid Integrated Design with Good Energy Saving Initiatives
Heavy pre-drydock installation of RO plant, Structural steel, conversion of Fuel
tanks to machinery space and relocation of key equipment
Integrated Lloyds Plan Approval Process successfully achieved
Documentation Process & Control Maintained Throughout Project
Successful Installation of Diesel, Alternator & Auxiliaries in 17 Days (dry-dock)
Completed project one month ahead of schedule.
Success of project resulted in additional installation in 2015 (sister vessel)
17. Case Study II: Testimonials
“Ioannis is a pleasure to work with and is always willing to go the extra mile to support the team.
Ioannis completed the very challenging Coral (Princess) drydock and the significant additional
diesel (generator) project this year.
Both were successfully executed and completed while he was still managing day to day
superintendent duties for the Coral (Princess) and Island (Princess).
This was a significant task and I thank Ioannis for his prodigious effort. Well done.”
“Ioannis has managed CO & IP (Coral Princess, Island Princess) earlier in the year and then was
assigned to the additional diesel (generator) project which was a significant $21M undertaking.
With the departure of the superintendent for CO/IP, superintendent duties reverted to Ioannis
along with the dry dock planning responsibility at a late stage. Ioannis admirably immediately
stepped up to the task and took on this new work load which was most appreciated.
Ioannis was also a member of the Wartsila contract (negotiation) working group which successfully
competed the analysis and negotiation of the 5-year DG (Diesel Engine) maintenance contract
which was a significant undertaking and highly valued. Well done.”
18. Additional Testimonials
“Ioannis is a prime mover and always delivers in times of extreme deadlines and
critical operational requirements. His command and management style is highly
recommended.”
