Key milestone achieved in the Rumaila IPT Project
We are glad to announce that the ambitious IPT (increased production target) was
met in December last year by increasing oil extraction by more than 100,000 bpd
above the 1.066 million bpd initial output rate set in December 2009. A task that
would take normally about three years to complete was accomplished in the record
time of less than a year thanks to the enthusiasm and hard work of the people
involved.
The contract between BP Iraq N.V. and Mott MacDonald was successfully signed in April
2010 and included provision of Engineering, Procurement and Project Management
services. The project was executed by a joint team with China Petroleum Engineering
Company (CPE), the engineering design arm of CNCP, and now our JV partner.
The base scope of work included detailed engineering design, procurement assistance and
project management services. Additional scopes included a water definition study, Qarmat
Ali Water Facilities rehabilitation and construction support.
To meet the challenge a dedicated project taskforce was established at the Mott
MacDonald’s Abu Dhabi office and project-based offices were also established in Basra and
Beijing. Wellhead and degassing station data gathering were obtained through detailed field
surveys. This field data formed the basis of the detailed engineering design work and was
supplemented with the latest available satellite imagery data.
Appreciation for this tremendous achievement has been expressed by our client who
commended all those involved in the project: “It has been a roller coaster of a ride and
many did not think this was possible. Reaching IPT is a significant milestone, but only
one of many achieved, and each of you has played a significant role in defeating the
sceptics and making Rumaila a success.”

Successful completion of the IRP Project
Our congratulations go to Ahmed Al Mazrui who is
the deserving winner of the Chairman’s Award 2010.
This award acknowledges individuals who achieve
excellence in customer care and business
development through their exceptional personal
efforts and dedication.
All of the shortlisted finalists had already won their
respective Unit level Chairman’s Award, and the quality
of work entered by everyone involved demonstrated that
very high standards of professional excellence are being
practised worldwide. Ahmed has created long lasting
customer relationships and expanded the scope of
services that we provide in Oman, including the
introduction of other Units.
The judging panel commented: “Selecting the winner
was a very difficult task, but it was decided the award
should go to Ahmed Al Mazrui. Ahmed has delivered
outstanding customer management and development
performance and under his leadership Mott MacDonald
on the PDO EMC Contract in Oman has achieved an
outstanding safety record of 20 million man- hours
without a lost time incident”.

In April 2005 Mott MacDonald was awarded the design and engineering contract for the prestigious $800
million Inter Refineries Pipelines project the main aim of which was to inter-connect the refineries at Umm
Al Naar, Ruwais and Mussafah in the UAE.
Mott MacDonald was appointed as the engineering sub-contractor to Dodsal and was fully responsible for detailed
engineering up to commissioning. Dodsal’s Project Director, Mr P.K. Surendran has spoken of his appreciation
and gratitude to Mott MacDonald for the successful completion of the project in March 2010: “We express our
appreciation for completing the engineering services to the satisfaction of the client and the end users. We take
this opportunity to compliment each member of your team of dedicated engineers who took sincere efforts in
completing the job in compliance with the specifications…I look forward to continuing our relationship.”
We were also responsible for the modification of existing facilities and tie-ins at six sites, namely: Abu Dhabi
refinery, Mussafah, Ruwais refinery, Abu Dhabi international airport and Al Ain and Maqta. The Mussafah
terminal was extended to include additional storage tanks and new loading arms to load Jet A1 fuel onto road
tankers.
The project included the development of the
following facilities:
730km of new pipelines
Six terminals including ten storage tanks,
pump house metering, launcher/receiver,
road tanker loading areas
Seven sectionalising valve stations including
passive cooled shelters and all associated
CMEI works.

Major Safety Award for the Bab Gas Compression Project
Mott MacDonald was presented with a Shield by Mr. Abdul Munim Saif Al-Kindly, C.E.O. of ADCO, in
recognition of Mott MacDonald’s contribution in achieving 5 million man-hours without Lost Time
Incident (LTI) in the project.
On the 14th of December the very first Oil & Gas Middle East Awards ceremony was held in Dubai. The
event was attended by many of the industry’s most distinguished companies and personalities who
received awards in recognition of their excellent achievements.
Amongst the winners was Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) who received the ‘Enhanced Hydrocarbon
Recovery Project of the year’ award for its remarkable initiatives in enhanced oil recovery (EOR).
PDO successfully commissioned its first full-scale enhanced oil recovery project at Marmul in February 2010 and
Mott MacDonald provided the engineering design services for this fast-track, challenging project. The Marmul
Polymer Project, in the south of PDO’s concession area, will add a further 8,000 bpd of oil production over the
coming years. This ambitious and sophisticated project involved building a water treatment plant with a capacity of
80,000 m
3
per day and polymer preparation and injection facilities station with a capacity of 17,500 m3
per day.
Receiving the award on behalf of PDO, Barbara Lak, Shell’s technical assurance manager for the MENA region
said that the Omani NOC had made great strides in EOR techniques and was pioneering new and innovative EOR
methods:
“We won the award because as a partnership we’ve come together and tried out a number of different techniques
to enhance the oil recovery…We’ve done a number of pilots to test various techniques for this field and the
polymer technique turned out to be the most effective”.
Mrs Lak also added that the lessons learned from employing the polymer EOR technique would help both Oman
and other countries with similar oil extraction scenarios to maximise their production output.

Another milestone reached on Satah Full Field Development
Satah Full Field Development is an ambitious project that will provide gas injection facilities for the Satah
field to enhance output and boost oil production to 25,000 bpd in the next 25 years.
In July last year yet another appreciation came from our client ZADCO for the successful completion of
the below stages of the project:
Satah Field main production platform
In recognising the key contribution provided by Mott
MacDonald, the ZADCO Project Manager wrote:
“My sincere appreciation goes to engineers for
their significant efforts, dedication, hard working
and commitment to meet the project deadlines
without compromising the quality. We are fully
aware that the challenges are yet to come and the
upcoming stages are very critical and require extra
efforts and dedication, we are also very confident
that with your support our shareholder and
management’s expectations can be achieved
successfully”.
