3. THE MAIN IDEA OF THE VIDEO
• Mixture of performance and concept
• The video will feature videos of live performance from a band
and will follow the theme of teenagers having a good time.
• A few of the lyrics will relate to the visuals going on in the video
at the time meaning we are following the conventions of
Goodwin’s 7.
• As well as the live performance sections there will be frequent
shots of people on a road trip in various places though this will
not necessary be chronological.
4. TARGET AUDIENCE
• Our main target audience will be edgy teens and indie kids who
only wear doc martens and spit on chart music.
• We will interest and captivate this particular audience by having
edgy indie people clothes on our actors and going on indie road
trips to indie places with a group of indie friends who are all
edgy.
• Said indie kids are also prone to be interested to indie looking
bands like the one that will be featured.
5. GENRE, CODES & CONVENTIONS
• The genre of our music video will be a mixture of concept and performance
based footage. For the concept areas of the video the theme will be falling in
love with your friends in a non romantic sense tying in with the lyrics “we fell
in love right by the ocean”.
• There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.
• We’re following the indie rock stereotype that there is live performance in the
video.
• Going against the stereotypical music video convention of objectifying
women and sexualizing relationships.
• The tone of are music video will be feel good and nostalgic.
6. NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
• Start:
The start will be setting the scene forecasting the scenes and people that are
going to be featuring later on in the video. As previously mentioned the video will
be heavily based around the theme of the value of friendship and the characters
in our video will be, first of all, shown alone in a slightly less happy mood than
later on when shown with friends.
The earlier parts of the music video will also show shots of the band playing but
in a relatively chilled environment which will progress to a slightly more
enthusiastic performance throughout the song.
7. • Middle:
There will be various shots towards the middle of the video showing the
individual indie teens packing their kankens and Herschel bags for a road trip.
There will be some experimenting of episodic structure where there will be very
brief glimpses of the EdGy indie teen gathering that will mainly be featured
towards the end.
Throughout this section it will also feature shots of the band
8. • End:
The final shots of the EdGy indie teens will be them dancing and having fun (by
the ocean lol) and there will be fire and drinks (all non alcoholic of course) and
music. By this point they will all be together and the general mood of the whole
video will have shifted from dull and bored to feel good and exciting.
The plan is to have the fun feel good shots in a couple of different locations
although this is dependent on whether we can organise the actors for this
amount of time.
At this stage of the music video the band will have also changed location
(potentially onto a roof or by the ocean) and will also be giving a full on
performance to match the energy of the song.
10. VISUAL STYLE
• Camera work – we will be using establishing shots to picture the scenery at
the beach. There will be a lot of close ups especially at the start to show
emotion of the teens before united with their friends and of various members
of the band to show they are actually playing the instruments etc.
• Lighting – The lighting will be natural daytime lighting at the beginning with
maybe some lamp light within peoples houses. As the video progresses to
the road trip section the lighting will begin to get brighter to symbolize
happiness and fun etc. Towards the end the lighting will get darker again as it
is dusk but it will still be relatively warm feeling as it is a happy feel good
stage of the video.
• Special Effects – The initial shots of the band will be set in a garage although
this wont be noticeable as the idea is to have it pitch black with only a
projection of the ocean to light it.
11. • Mise en scene – When packing for their road trips the surroundings and
items in the teens bedrooms will be typical of a stylish alternative young
adult. There will be more obvious props eg. Band equipment but that goes
without saying. As previously mentioned the costumes of the cast will be
typical garments of an alternative teen eg. Dr Martens, baggy trousers/jeans,
dungarees etc.
12. • Editing – There will be a lot of editing to the beat of the music due to the fact
that it is a relatively fast paced song. There will be a lot of editing involving
colour manipulation as at the beginning there will be a lot of muted grey
tones due to the depressing, fed up nature of the narrative and at the end we
will need to make the evening at the beach look far warmer than it actually is
as we’re going for a summer/ happy theme. The location at the end will also
look far more picturesque if the colours are brighter.
