Improve Overall Mood Examples
O: I want to improve my overall mood. A: MHS made use of session to practice (role play) coping techniques previously taught to member and how
they can be incorporated to be part of member's daily life. R: Member begins quickly engaged during the session. MHS emphasized the methods of
taking ten deep breaths, slowly counting to ten while thinking positive thoughts, getting the adequate amount of rest at night, occupying her time, and
the walk away technique; all which can aid in the member's daily mood. During the role playing session member made mention to MHS "I just been
trying to get myself back together you have no idea how hard I have been having it especially missing my kids but I know I got to keep going for them
and for me too,"

The Last Stop Analysis
The most influential reading we read was "The Last Stop." While reading that story I got a clear understanding of how to write in a very descriptive
way. When he described the funeral home director Mr Deaver . It helped me to understand what I should explain when I described Mrs Slama. I
learned to be specific and very detailed. Another thing I also learned and noticed from the reading what his description of the funeral home itself. In the
beginning of the reading he talks about walking up to the mortuary and it reminding him of a church and also an apartment complex. When writing my
profile I tried to be a descriptive as possible. I talked about what I saw when I walked into the school and the colors I noticed on the walls of the
hallways.

El Hoyo Analysis
1. The selection's thesis (or dominant impression) is the people of El Hoyo live like a big family sharing the same amount of emotions through the
happy and tough times and helping and looking out for each other.
4. I think his essay succeeds in communicating his ideas because he gave in details of El Hoyo, the people that live there and their lifestyle and its
importance to him. He wrote about its scenery which isn't too beautiful as he writes the houses consists of unplastered adobe, wood, and abandoned
car parts. The city has narrow streets, some tall trees, weeds, garbage, and dogs. As well El Hoyo is not safe. However, it does have good in it too or
"advantages" as he put it such as if you are going through a long time of hardship, the...show more content...
I would characterize the author's tone as down to earth because he told the story more from a factual basis with really no emotions, seriousness or
opinions. For example, he writes, "its inhabitants are Chicanos who raise hell on Saturday night and listen to Padre Estanislo on Sunday morning."
The example is more factual than anything else as he wrote the Chicano made noise on Saturday night and listened to Padre Estansilo the following
morning. Another example, "it's houses are simple affairs of unplastered adobe, wood, and abandoned car parts." Again he is just stating a fact about
what the houses consist of in El Hoyo. "When the Mexican Army was en route to Baja, California, and the Chicanos found out that the enlisted men
ate only at infrequent intervals, it was El Hoyo's Chicanos who crusaded across town with pots of beans and trays of tortillas to meet the train," is
just a stated fact. One last example I can give is "it laughs and cries with the same amount of passion in times of plenty and of want," is again Mario
Suarez just simply saying that people of his hometown share the same amount of emotions through the good and bad times. The examples I put are
facts with no thoughts, or emotions about it from Suarez.
I think the author adopts the tone that he uses because he wanted to tell the story from a factual basis so we can understand the city, community and
why it's important to him. If he told what he thought about the city and off of that how it's important to him, we could have made our own judgments.
Our own judgments could have been wrong or what he doesn't want us to think about the city. However, since he told all facts about the city, we know
the facts about the city and got to know the exact factual reasons why the city is important to him as the best way to show or prove your point is through

My Most Dominant Traits Of My Personality
One thing that I find very intriguing is that every person has a unique personality made of different basic traits: extroversion, agreeableness,
conscientiousness, emotional stability and intellect. Some may have the same dominant traits as others but each individual has their own very
special personality. In the following essay I will be writing about my most dominant traits of my personality which are agreeableness,
conscientious and intellect. Over the last 10 years or so I have grown to be more friendly and kind than I have ever been. I think this is because of
my level maturity I have reached and the experiences I have had within those years. In my mid teen years I recall being a very moody and
somewhat mean young woman. At the time I did not know better but to act the way I did. I was part of a popular clique in school, so therefore I
was considered popular. Thinking about those days then, I come to the conclusion that I must have thought that I was better than some of the
other people in school because I was in that clique, which was foolish of me. I was unkind to people I did not even know. Makes me sad to realize
how superficial I was then. Nevertheless, I have grown to be a very kind and friendly person to everyone. People other than my friends and family
have told me that I am very nice and friendly. My intentions are always meant to be good. Frankly, life is too short to be unkind and also, you never
know what other people are going through. A simple and kind

The people in the short story are the characters who create a dominant impression on readers. They are the living beings in the story that think or act
in order to keep the story going, the characters are primarily responsible for the illusion of life in a work of fiction. They must seem like living and
feeling individuals in order for the readers to feel strongly about them so they will keep reading about them. The plot shows the sequence of events
which involves the characters and the result of conflict. It may show causes and effects, or in any other way to show a relationship between one
incident, and another, and between all of them and the final outcome. It begins by introducing the time and place setting and the main characters which
is followed by a complication. This entails the problems and struggles that would be encountered by the main characters leading to the crisis. After the
problem has been identified, the climax, which is the highest moment of interest and greatest emotion, takes place. The untying of the entangled knots
or denouement goes after it leading to its inevitable ending. Conflict is essential to plot. Without conflict there is no plot. It is the opposition of forces
which ties one incident to another and makes the plot move. Conflict is not merely limited to open arguments; rather it is any form of opposition that
faces the main character. Within a short story there may be

Descriptive Essay About My Grandfather
A couple weeks ago my Grandfather passed, my family felt like something was missing. We felt even though my grandfather wasn't there
,something of his was missing. Before he had passed , he would sit in the same chair every day and with the same hats hung up on the top of the
chair, and the same little desk with a box of tissues in the same spot, and the same old dusty phone book that hasn't moved in 3 years and had the
names of people no one knows of and numbers that probably don't even go to the right person anymore, that was even still there. We knew there was
something missing ,but we couldn't quite put our finger on it. My Grandfather would always have multiple hats on his chair so we never thought to

From looking through all closets to calling up my aunts and uncles to see if they had, we had no luck finding The Hat. After, searching...and
searching...and searching the house looked like a natural disaster. We tried to retrace our steps to see if we could maybe remember the last time
we had it, we thought...and thought...and thought but still was left with nothing. After about 20 min of thinking, it hit us that my Grandpa goes
everywhere with his hat so the last place it could have been was the hospital. We called the hospital, but no answer, so we called, and called , and
called and they finally answered ,I didn't hear the conversation ,but what I understood from it was that they had one of the nurses look in the room
he was in, check the lost and found , and asked around if anyone saw The Hat, but ,there was no luck. The day after when I was out of school and
my mom was off of work, I asked with hope that The Hat may have been found "Did Grandma find the Hat?" "Nope, it is still lost" my mom said
with the a very quiet tone. An hour or so later we took a trip down to the hospital to see if we could talk and maybe give them a better description
and help. Once we arrived we went in with pictures of The Hat and gave as much detail as possible, we thought they could have found it after the
numerous descriptions and when he was there, and even the exact room––but still no luck. We drove home knowing that

Once More to the Lake For many people there is a sweet scent, an inviting image, the familiar sound of laughter that bring them back to a place full
of childhood images. In "Once More to the Lake", author E.B. White longs to bring his audience back to one of the most memorable places in his
childhood, a camp on a lake in Maine, starting in about 1904. He shows the reader how he feels he has replaced his own father and is playing the
same role he played nearly forty years earlier. White directs his essay at an anonymous audience. Read by children, it is yet another "when I was your
age" story, but to an adult or parent he is quite successful in provoking old forgotten memories. The author assumes his audience will, at least somewhat,

Whether on purpose or by accident, White has neglected to include copious examples of scents in his essay. White also tells of the wonderful tastes of
Maine, the pop that burned as it backfired up his nose and the sweet doughnuts dipped in sugar. He describes for his audience the sounds of summer,
the loud fuss over unpacking trunks, the familiar squeals of delight as his family arrived, the silence of the peaceful morning, the hum of boat motors.
Noticeably, White has not touched much on his audience's sense of touch. The dominant impression of White's essay is undoubtedly one of sweet
reminiscence. He is thrilled that things remain the same and says so a countless number of times. The reader will frequently come across the use of an
anaphora, usually with words like same, forever, without end, unshatterable, fade–proof, infinitely. These words all give his audience a sense of
perpetual life, eternal beauty, immortality. One will also see polysyndetons emphasizing the importance of each and every word he has chosen to
include. White repeatedly uses the phrase, "jollity and peace and goodness". This assists in supporting his dominant impression of fond, lasting
memories. White continuously uses asyndeton in his essay, giving his audience the impression that no list he provides is ever quite complete. There
will always be another sight, another smell, another sound, another taste that he has forgotten to include. In his essay, the author gives his

Narrative vs. Descriptive Writing
A narrative essay uses a point of view to tell a story. It is an engaging way for an author to tell his reader about an experience they have had or a
personal story. Descriptive writing is a description of something. It could be a person, place, thing, emotion or experience. The author is allowed more
artistic freedom when writing in descriptive form. While both descriptive and narrative essays are similar in many ways, the descriptive essays use of
language fully immerses the reader into the story and allows the reader to feel the intended emotion. Descriptive writing is painting a vivid image.

It is very important for a narrative essay to follow a sequence of events. In the narrative essay This Old House, the author followed a clear
chronological order. Sedaris told a story that included all of the typical components such as an introduction, and worked its way through all of the
events, introducing you to the characters and setting the stage along the way. Our book explains "As you learned earlier, plot is the order, or
sequence, of events that unfold in your story. It is crucial that you organize these events so that, by the end of the story, they make sense to the
reader and build up to a crucial moment in the narrative. (Connell & Sole, 2013). Sedaris did an excellent job of guiding the reader through the story.
In contrast, descriptive writing does not necessarily follow a timeline or story pattern. Descriptive style must use another form of organization. A
descriptive essay may for example separate paragraphs by the particular details being described. The author may devote an entire paragraph to a sense,
emotion or object. Amy Tan devoted one paragraph to describe her angst and dismay "When I found out that my parents had invited the minister's
family over for Christmas Eve dinner, I cried. What would Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas? What would he think of our noisy Chinese
relatives who lacked proper American manners? What terrible disappointment

Ruggles Native American Music Series: Joy Harjo On October the 6th, I went to the Ruggles Native American Music Series at Paul F.Sharp
Concert Hall in the Cattle Music Center. Joy Harjo played a number of native American songs using each of the saxophone and the native flute. She
was supported by three members playing guitars, drums, and vocals. From what I read about Joy Harjo, she is an author, poet and a musician as
well. She has lots of astonishing accomplishment in these areas. Taking into consideration what we covered in class about the role of women in native
American songs, I find Joy Harjo to be an icon. She is more than a musician, she is an ambassador for the native American heritage and culture.
Personally, I like the spirit

Essay on Robin Hood Summary
Robin Hood's good traits are easily seen throughout the story. The author did a good job of making his hero come across as a good person, who has
often been misinterpreted because of things that he did as a young boy. Showing the change Robin Hood has made since he was a little boy easily
allows the reader to better understand how great he really is, and how he is helping not only himself, but all of the poorer community.Robin Hood was
faced with issues from very early on in his life. His mothers death was very difficult for him, but living with his fathers love for another women, after
his mother had died, was just too much for him and he threatened his father that staying with that women would cost him his only sons love.

Robin Hood seemed almost charismatic in some ways in the story and the movie, however it doesn't seem that he tried to be.
The people simply saw what he was saying, and believed that he was doing the right thing for everyone, so they followed him, and helped
him. Some of the poorer people, especially Robin's brother, feel that he has betrayed them by having so many of their people killed pointlessly. His
brother feels that Robin is leading them to death for his own victory. His dislike started when Robin's father left his stepbrothers mother because
Robin felt that his father was betraying his mother by being with another women. Although Robin's brother sees it all like this, he finally understands
that his intentions are good for all people and that he only means to help and get back what has been taken from them for so long. Once his brother
realizes this they unite and help take down the forces of Nottingham.
One of Robin's major traits is never showing fear of his enemies. Even when he is outnumbered ten to one, he still takes out the enemy easily and
calmly without showing any fear. This great trait gives the readers the impression that he is somewhat invincible yet it's justified by his calmness and
his skill. He just utilizes so many things when he fights, there is no way he could ever lose.

Analysis Of El Hoyo
I agree with you on your assessment of both essays. El Hoyo was a very poor town and no one would really just drive by and say, hey I want to live

William Shakespeare's infamous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, is set in 15th century Verona; a town torn between the anger, violence, quarrel and
rivalry of two prestigious families, the house of Montague and the house of Capulet. Despite this, the play is also able to tell the story of two star
crossed lovers who find themselves caught between the strife. However this is not the only key relationship which Shakespeare shows us throughout
the play; a view on the relationship between men and women can also be looked at during the dialogue between Romeo and his cousin in Act One
Scene One.
Romeo's initial love for Rosaline is a situation that leads to the audience being able to infer much about how Shakespeare wishes to portray the...show

It hints on the idea of Shakespeare taking the mickey out of his own character. In turn, this could then lead one to think that he is showing his distaste
in a male whom is weak or broken, and therefore suggesting that he is in preference of the more stronger, independent an domineering male stereotype;
hence him over dramatizing Romeo's woe, for example with the use of a chiasmus – "This love feel I, that feel no love in this.", using clever word play,
which emphasises the key in it all, love. Nonetheless, the ultimate effect of this is somewhat lost by the fact that it is not necessarily love that Romeo
is feeling, rather a lust for something he has merely seen; he is more convincingly in love with the idea of love, than Rosaline.
On the other hand, the way I which Shakespeare has portrayed Rome can be viewed in rather a diverse light upon closer inspection. It may seem like
it is pointless, Romeo simply chasing a lost cause however, the situation does demonstrate a male quality that Shakespeare could be intending to
portray. As mentioned, the difference between the sexes is highlighted, as one being inferior and one more dominant and this can also be translated
into the situation of a predator and its prey. When an animal finds its prey, that's all it can focus on and it will not stop until it has what it wants. The
fact that Romeo refuses to forget about

My Writing Skills Improved Over The Last Semester
My Writing Skills have improved Over the Last Semester
While attending writing class, I learned about the 4 steps in writing, bases for revising, organizing, and connecting specific information, and I also
learned about the different types of essays such as descriptive, narrative, process, cause and effect and argumentative essay. I have been a student at
Milwaukee Area Technical College for 1 semester, and over the course of my enrollment I have grown and learned more that I knew prior to attending
this writing course. Participating in this writing class has taught me so much more than stuff about literature and language, it has taught me another
way of expressing myself. I have learned here how to write and express myself, how to think for myself, and how to find the answers to the things that
I don 't know. Most importantly I have learned how important technique, outlines and organization are. My goal in this paper is to inform writers about
how my writing skills have improved.
Learning about the different type of writing styles and steps of writing was the most interesting. Descriptive essays are my favorite to read and
write. If I was to write about a person, I would select a dominant impression of the person using details to convey that impression. I would also
choose details to support the topic sentence. Descriptive essays help give readers vivid image in their mind. When I write descriptive essays, I use 4

I think the Restaurant Review was definitely the most enjoyable piece to write, because I'm able to express my opinions in a sarcastic, humorous, and

eat at the restaurant before actually writing the piece. In my Restaurant Review, I wrote it like a fiction story. It started off with me dialling the numbers
of the restaurant, to me leaving the restaurant with my wallet crying. The events are listed in a chronological order. Throughout the review I used a

an idea, it is important that the idea is without ambiguity or uncertainty. The process of writing cultivates an analytic approach to the understanding
different information. Good writing fosters clear thinking, that is very important if I decide to be an architect or civil

My Visit To A Market Place Is Of Great Experience

with vibrant and catching colors. Door of shops are spotless making customers able to see in the shop. Every shop decorates its front side with

Writing about a same place in same time with opposite view is technical and very interesting. Writer's tool box helps a lot in this task.
First tool is "direct statement of meaning" by which I stated my both descriptions.
I wrote "My visit to a market place is of great experience." This starting sentence describe about my good experience about going to a market. Reader
can somehow understand what I am going to write further. In my unpleasant description I wrote "In evening, my visit to a market place is a bad
experience" that gives sense to reader about negative things of the same place.
"Show sentences" is next tool that I employed. I used this tool so that I make my readers to indulge in the scene completely. In pleasant description,
the line "Lights illuminated the whole market as the room is prepared to welcome a new bride" describe the brightness of lights in the market, and "Food
corners with their mouthwatering food items tempting visitors to come and eat" shows the scene of food stalls. In negative description, "A thick
layer of dust covered the hangings outside the doors," "Flies are buzzing on the food items," "Benches are impaired because of broken legs" tells about
bad side of a market

Descriptive Essay On Imagine A Cloud
Ever since I was young, I have had a passion for reading and writing. It is just something that has always come easily to me. So when eleven–year–old
me walked through the dimly lit hallways of Johnsonville Elementary School, into a strange classroom, and sat in my boxed–in–desk and was told that
I was writing a descriptive essay, I was extremely excited. It would be the first time that I had ever written a descriptive–based paper. Nevertheless, it
was a newly–introduced challenge, and I was ready to take it on. "Okay class", said the plump teacher standing in the front of the room, "I have been
informed that each of you needs to write an essay for the state." "I hope it is about monsters and astronauts!", the student beside me said....show more

"I then sat down in my seat and felt the cotton–lined cushions. They were the softest things that I had ever felt and I truly would never forget them", I

thought, "What is it though?"
I went through every possible word before I finally found the word that I liked. "However, my experience was interrupted by a screaming whistle.
The train was getting ready to move and I needed to prepare myself for it" "That sounds a lot better!", I said to myself. I kept writing. "I then felt
the train shift forwards and we started going. I looked out of the window and saw the fluffy, Grey clouds of smoke rise above us." "Just like she
told us." I wrote and smiled. "Not long after, I heard three bold knocks on the door of the train car that I was in.", I wrote, "It was a man wearing a
nicely tailored suit asking if I wanted some sweets. Of course, I couldn't resist and took them up in a heartbeat." I paused for a few moments, and
continued "He ended up giving me some chocolate cupcakes with the most delicious frosting that I have ever had." I started to lick my lips from just
thinking about it. "When I finished the last one, I looked out the window and saw the train station. Just as quick as I had gotten on, the train arrived at
its destination.", I concluded my paper and read it over a thousand times. When I

Dorothy Allison's Panacea
In Dorothy Allison's essay, "Panacea," she effectively conveys the importance of preparing a gravy, which ensures the dominant impression of safety
and comfort necessary for mothers to display to their children. Dorothy Allison, well–known author and essayist, begins her essay by discussing how
she remembers her mother's gravy and the process of making it, including the pounding of the meat in order to flatten it out. She adds pathos by saying
gravy is the "most memory–laden dish" she has learned how to cook and the comfort it brings. Instead of calling it country–fried steak as others
normally do, Allison's mother calls the savory dish cube steak, a more underprivileged name. Allison says, "It was not until I was grown that I

In the essays "The Miss Dennis School of Writing," by Alice Steinbach, and "No Wonder They Call me a Bitch," by Ann Hodgman, both authors use
description to get across the points they wish to make. The authors' purpose for both of these essays are to catch the reader's attention as well as to
provide the readers with life lessons through descriptive writing. In "The Miss Dennis School of Writing," Steinbach is trying to teach people about
descriptive writing from her own experiences through her teacher Miss Dennis. In "No Wonder They Call me a Bitch", the author Hodgman is trying to

In "The Miss Dennis School of Writing", the author Steinbach wants the reader to understand her experience as she explains it through her encounters

Improve Overall Mood Examples

  • 1. Improve Overall Mood Examples O: I want to improve my overall mood. A: MHS made use of session to practice (role play) coping techniques previously taught to member and how they can be incorporated to be part of member's daily life. R: Member begins quickly engaged during the session. MHS emphasized the methods of taking ten deep breaths, slowly counting to ten while thinking positive thoughts, getting the adequate amount of rest at night, occupying her time, and the walk away technique; all which can aid in the member's daily mood. During the role playing session member made mention to MHS "I just been trying to get myself back together you have no idea how hard I have been having it especially missing my kids but I know I got to keep going for them and for me too," Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. The Last Stop Analysis The most influential reading we read was "The Last Stop." While reading that story I got a clear understanding of how to write in a very descriptive way. When he described the funeral home director Mr Deaver . It helped me to understand what I should explain when I described Mrs Slama. I learned to be specific and very detailed. Another thing I also learned and noticed from the reading what his description of the funeral home itself. In the beginning of the reading he talks about walking up to the mortuary and it reminding him of a church and also an apartment complex. When writing my profile I tried to be a descriptive as possible. I talked about what I saw when I walked into the school and the colors I noticed on the walls of the hallways. • 3. El Hoyo Analysis 1. The selection's thesis (or dominant impression) is the people of El Hoyo live like a big family sharing the same amount of emotions through the happy and tough times and helping and looking out for each other. 4. I think his essay succeeds in communicating his ideas because he gave in details of El Hoyo, the people that live there and their lifestyle and its importance to him. He wrote about its scenery which isn't too beautiful as he writes the houses consists of unplastered adobe, wood, and abandoned car parts. The city has narrow streets, some tall trees, weeds, garbage, and dogs. As well El Hoyo is not safe. However, it does have good in it too or "advantages" as he put it such as if you are going through a long time of hardship, the...show more content... I would characterize the author's tone as down to earth because he told the story more from a factual basis with really no emotions, seriousness or opinions. For example, he writes, "its inhabitants are Chicanos who raise hell on Saturday night and listen to Padre Estanislo on Sunday morning." The example is more factual than anything else as he wrote the Chicano made noise on Saturday night and listened to Padre Estansilo the following morning. Another example, "it's houses are simple affairs of unplastered adobe, wood, and abandoned car parts." Again he is just stating a fact about what the houses consist of in El Hoyo. "When the Mexican Army was en route to Baja, California, and the Chicanos found out that the enlisted men ate only at infrequent intervals, it was El Hoyo's Chicanos who crusaded across town with pots of beans and trays of tortillas to meet the train," is just a stated fact. One last example I can give is "it laughs and cries with the same amount of passion in times of plenty and of want," is again Mario Suarez just simply saying that people of his hometown share the same amount of emotions through the good and bad times. The examples I put are facts with no thoughts, or emotions about it from Suarez. I think the author adopts the tone that he uses because he wanted to tell the story from a factual basis so we can understand the city, community and why it's important to him. If he told what he thought about the city and off of that how it's important to him, we could have made our own judgments. Our own judgments could have been wrong or what he doesn't want us to think about the city. However, since he told all facts about the city, we know the facts about the city and got to know the exact factual reasons why the city is important to him as the best way to show or prove your point is through Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. My Most Dominant Traits Of My Personality One thing that I find very intriguing is that every person has a unique personality made of different basic traits: extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability and intellect. Some may have the same dominant traits as others but each individual has their own very special personality. In the following essay I will be writing about my most dominant traits of my personality which are agreeableness, conscientious and intellect. Over the last 10 years or so I have grown to be more friendly and kind than I have ever been. I think this is because of my level maturity I have reached and the experiences I have had within those years. In my mid teen years I recall being a very moody and somewhat mean young woman. At the time I did not know better but to act the way I did. I was part of a popular clique in school, so therefore I was considered popular. Thinking about those days then, I come to the conclusion that I must have thought that I was better than some of the other people in school because I was in that clique, which was foolish of me. I was unkind to people I did not even know. Makes me sad to realize how superficial I was then. Nevertheless, I have grown to be a very kind and friendly person to everyone. People other than my friends and family have told me that I am very nice and friendly. My intentions are always meant to be good. Frankly, life is too short to be unkind and also, you never know what other people are going through. A simple and kind Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Trinidad Literature Adviser CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A short story is a brief work of literature, usually written in narrative prose. It is a fictional work depicting one character's inner conflict with others, usually having one thematic focus. Short stories generally produce a single, focused emotional and intellectual response of the reader. Novels, by contrast, usually depict conflicts among many...show more content... The people in the short story are the characters who create a dominant impression on readers. They are the living beings in the story that think or act in order to keep the story going, the characters are primarily responsible for the illusion of life in a work of fiction. They must seem like living and feeling individuals in order for the readers to feel strongly about them so they will keep reading about them. The plot shows the sequence of events which involves the characters and the result of conflict. It may show causes and effects, or in any other way to show a relationship between one incident, and another, and between all of them and the final outcome. It begins by introducing the time and place setting and the main characters which is followed by a complication. This entails the problems and struggles that would be encountered by the main characters leading to the crisis. After the problem has been identified, the climax, which is the highest moment of interest and greatest emotion, takes place. The untying of the entangled knots or denouement goes after it leading to its inevitable ending. Conflict is essential to plot. Without conflict there is no plot. It is the opposition of forces which ties one incident to another and makes the plot move. Conflict is not merely limited to open arguments; rather it is any form of opposition that faces the main character. Within a short story there may be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Descriptive Essay About My Grandfather A couple weeks ago my Grandfather passed, my family felt like something was missing. We felt even though my grandfather wasn't there ,something of his was missing. Before he had passed , he would sit in the same chair every day and with the same hats hung up on the top of the chair, and the same little desk with a box of tissues in the same spot, and the same old dusty phone book that hasn't moved in 3 years and had the names of people no one knows of and numbers that probably don't even go to the right person anymore, that was even still there. We knew there was something missing ,but we couldn't quite put our finger on it. From looking through all closets to calling up my aunts and uncles to see if they had, we had no luck finding The Hat. After, searching...and searching...and searching the house looked like a natural disaster. We tried to retrace our steps to see if we could maybe remember the last time we had it, we thought...and thought...and thought but still was left with nothing. After about 20 min of thinking, it hit us that my Grandpa goes everywhere with his hat so the last place it could have been was the hospital. We called the hospital, but no answer, so we called, and called , and called and they finally answered ,I didn't hear the conversation ,but what I understood from it was that they had one of the nurses look in the room he was in, check the lost and found , and asked around if anyone saw The Hat, but ,there was no luck. The day after when I was out of school and my mom was off of work, I asked with hope that The Hat may have been found "Did Grandma find the Hat?" "Nope, it is still lost" my mom said with the a very quiet tone. An hour or so later we took a trip down to the hospital to see if we could talk and maybe give them a better description and help. Once we arrived we went in with pictures of The Hat and gave as much detail as possible, we thought they could have found it after the numerous descriptions and when he was there, and even the exact room––but still no luck. We drove home knowing that Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 8. Once More to the Lake For many people there is a sweet scent, an inviting image, the familiar sound of laughter that bring them back to a place full of childhood images. In "Once More to the Lake", author E.B. White longs to bring his audience back to one of the most memorable places in his childhood, a camp on a lake in Maine, starting in about 1904. He shows the reader how he feels he has replaced his own father and is playing the same role he played nearly forty years earlier. White directs his essay at an anonymous audience. Read by children, it is yet another "when I was your age" story, but to an adult or parent he is quite successful in provoking old forgotten memories. The author assumes his audience will, at least somewhat, ...show more content... Whether on purpose or by accident, White has neglected to include copious examples of scents in his essay. White also tells of the wonderful tastes of Maine, the pop that burned as it backfired up his nose and the sweet doughnuts dipped in sugar. He describes for his audience the sounds of summer, the loud fuss over unpacking trunks, the familiar squeals of delight as his family arrived, the silence of the peaceful morning, the hum of boat motors. Noticeably, White has not touched much on his audience's sense of touch. The dominant impression of White's essay is undoubtedly one of sweet reminiscence. He is thrilled that things remain the same and says so a countless number of times. The reader will frequently come across the use of an anaphora, usually with words like same, forever, without end, unshatterable, fade–proof, infinitely. These words all give his audience a sense of perpetual life, eternal beauty, immortality. One will also see polysyndetons emphasizing the importance of each and every word he has chosen to include. White repeatedly uses the phrase, "jollity and peace and goodness". This assists in supporting his dominant impression of fond, lasting memories. White continuously uses asyndeton in his essay, giving his audience the impression that no list he provides is ever quite complete. There will always be another sight, another smell, another sound, another taste that he has forgotten to include. In his essay, the author gives his Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Narrative vs. Descriptive Writing A narrative essay uses a point of view to tell a story. It is an engaging way for an author to tell his reader about an experience they have had or a personal story. Descriptive writing is a description of something. It could be a person, place, thing, emotion or experience. The author is allowed more artistic freedom when writing in descriptive form. While both descriptive and narrative essays are similar in many ways, the descriptive essays use of language fully immerses the reader into the story and allows the reader to feel the intended emotion. Descriptive writing is painting a vivid image. When reading I want to be able to lose myself in the writing doesn't everyone? Both narrative and descriptive writing include...show more content... It is very important for a narrative essay to follow a sequence of events. In the narrative essay This Old House, the author followed a clear chronological order. Sedaris told a story that included all of the typical components such as an introduction, and worked its way through all of the events, introducing you to the characters and setting the stage along the way. Our book explains "As you learned earlier, plot is the order, or sequence, of events that unfold in your story. It is crucial that you organize these events so that, by the end of the story, they make sense to the reader and build up to a crucial moment in the narrative. (Connell & Sole, 2013). Sedaris did an excellent job of guiding the reader through the story. In contrast, descriptive writing does not necessarily follow a timeline or story pattern. Descriptive style must use another form of organization. A descriptive essay may for example separate paragraphs by the particular details being described. The author may devote an entire paragraph to a sense, emotion or object. Amy Tan devoted one paragraph to describe her angst and dismay "When I found out that my parents had invited the minister's family over for Christmas Eve dinner, I cried. What would Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas? What would he think of our noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper American manners? Joy Harjo played a number of native American songs using each of the saxophone and the native flute. She was supported by three members playing guitars, drums, and vocals. From what I read about Joy Harjo, she is an author, poet and a musician as well. She has lots of astonishing accomplishment in these areas. Taking into consideration what we covered in class about the role of women in native American songs, I find Joy Harjo to be an icon. She is more than a musician, she is an ambassador for the native American heritage and culture. Personally, I like the spirit Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Essay on Robin Hood Summary Robin Hood's good traits are easily seen throughout the story. The author did a good job of making his hero come across as a good person, who has often been misinterpreted because of things that he did as a young boy. Showing the change Robin Hood has made since he was a little boy easily allows the reader to better understand how great he really is, and how he is helping not only himself, but all of the poorer community.Robin Hood was faced with issues from very early on in his life. His mothers death was very difficult for him, but living with his fathers love for another women, after his mother had died, was just too much for him and he threatened his father that staying with that women would cost him his only sons love. Robin then...show more content... Robin Hood seemed almost charismatic in some ways in the story and the movie, however it doesn't seem that he tried to be. The people simply saw what he was saying, and believed that he was doing the right thing for everyone, so they followed him, and helped him. Some of the poorer people, especially Robin's brother, feel that he has betrayed them by having so many of their people killed pointlessly. His brother feels that Robin is leading them to death for his own victory. His dislike started when Robin's father left his stepbrothers mother because Robin felt that his father was betraying his mother by being with another women. Although Robin's brother sees it all like this, he finally understands that his intentions are good for all people and that he only means to help and get back what has been taken from them for so long. Once his brother realizes this they unite and help take down the forces of Nottingham. One of Robin's major traits is never showing fear of his enemies. Even when he is outnumbered ten to one, he still takes out the enemy easily and calmly without showing any fear. This great trait gives the readers the impression that he is somewhat invincible yet it's justified by his calmness and his skill. He just utilizes so many things when he fights, there is no way he could ever lose. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 13. William Shakespeare's infamous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, is set in 15th century Verona; a town torn between the anger, violence, quarrel and rivalry of two prestigious families, the house of Montague and the house of Capulet. Despite this, the play is also able to tell the story of two star crossed lovers who find themselves caught between the strife. However this is not the only key relationship which Shakespeare shows us throughout the play; a view on the relationship between men and women can also be looked at during the dialogue between Romeo and his cousin in Act One Scene One. Romeo's initial love for Rosaline is a situation that leads to the audience being able to infer much about how Shakespeare wishes to portray the...show more content... It hints on the idea of Shakespeare taking the mickey out of his own character. In turn, this could then lead one to think that he is showing his distaste in a male whom is weak or broken, and therefore suggesting that he is in preference of the more stronger, independent an domineering male stereotype; hence him over dramatizing Romeo's woe, for example with the use of a chiasmus – "This love feel I, that feel no love in this.", using clever word play, which emphasises the key in it all, love. Nonetheless, the ultimate effect of this is somewhat lost by the fact that it is not necessarily love that Romeo is feeling, rather a lust for something he has merely seen; he is more convincingly in love with the idea of love, than Rosaline. On the other hand, the way I which Shakespeare has portrayed Rome can be viewed in rather a diverse light upon closer inspection. It may seem like it is pointless, Romeo simply chasing a lost cause however, the situation does demonstrate a male quality that Shakespeare could be intending to portray. As mentioned, the difference between the sexes is highlighted, as one being inferior and one more dominant and this can also be translated into the situation of a predator and its prey. When an animal finds its prey, that's all it can focus on and it will not stop until it has what it wants. The fact that Romeo refuses to forget about Get more content on HelpWriting.net

My Writing Skills Improved Over The Last Semester My Writing Skills have improved Over the Last Semester While attending writing class, I learned about the 4 steps in writing, bases for revising, organizing, and connecting specific information, and I also learned about the different types of essays such as descriptive, narrative, process, cause and effect and argumentative essay. I have been a student at Milwaukee Area Technical College for 1 semester, and over the course of my enrollment I have grown and learned more that I knew prior to attending this writing course. Participating in this writing class has taught me so much more than stuff about literature and language, it has taught me another way of expressing myself. I have learned here how to write and express myself, how to think for myself, and how to find the answers to the things that I don 't know. Most importantly I have learned how important technique, outlines and organization are. My goal in this paper is to inform writers about how my writing skills have improved. Learning about the different type of writing styles and steps of writing was the most interesting. Descriptive essays are my favorite to read and write. Reader can somehow understand what I am going to write further. In my unpleasant description I wrote "In evening, my visit to a market place is a bad experience" that gives sense to reader about negative things of the same place. "Show sentences" is next tool that I employed. I used this tool so that I make my readers to indulge in the scene completely. In pleasant description, the line "Lights illuminated the whole market as the room is prepared to welcome a new bride" describe the brightness of lights in the market, and "Food corners with their mouthwatering food items tempting visitors to come and eat" shows the scene of food stalls. In negative description, "A thick layer of dust covered the hangings outside the doors," "Flies are buzzing on the food items," "Benches are impaired because of broken legs" tells about bad side of a market Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Descriptive Essay On Imagine A Cloud Ever since I was young, I have had a passion for reading and writing. It is just something that has always come easily to me. So when eleven–year–old me walked through the dimly lit hallways of Johnsonville Elementary School, into a strange classroom, and sat in my boxed–in–desk and was told that I was writing a descriptive essay, I was extremely excited. It would be the first time that I had ever written a descriptive–based paper. Nevertheless, it was a newly–introduced challenge, and I was ready to take it on. "Okay class", said the plump teacher standing in the front of the room, "I have been informed that each of you needs to write an essay for the state." "I hope it is about monsters and astronauts!", the student beside me said....show more content... "I then sat down in my seat and felt the cotton–lined cushions. They were the softest things that I had ever felt and I truly would never forget them", I added. I then continued, "However, my experience was interrupted by a loud tra–". Again, I didn't like that. "There must be a better word than loud.", I thought, "What is it though?" I went through every possible word before I finally found the word that I liked. "However, my experience was interrupted by a screaming whistle. The train was getting ready to move and I needed to prepare myself for it" "That sounds a lot better!", I said to myself. I kept writing. "I then felt the train shift forwards and we started going. I looked out of the window and saw the fluffy, Grey clouds of smoke rise above us." "Just like she told us." I wrote and smiled. "Not long after, I heard three bold knocks on the door of the train car that I was in.", I wrote, "It was a man wearing a nicely tailored suit asking if I wanted some sweets. Of course, I couldn't resist and took them up in a heartbeat." I paused for a few moments, and continued "He ended up giving me some chocolate cupcakes with the most delicious frosting that I have ever had." I started to lick my lips from just thinking about it. "When I finished the last one, I looked out the window and saw the train station. Just as quick as I had gotten on, the train arrived at its destination.", I concluded my paper and read it over a thousand times. When I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Dorothy Allison's Panacea In Dorothy Allison's essay, "Panacea," she effectively conveys the importance of preparing a gravy, which ensures the dominant impression of safety and comfort necessary for mothers to display to their children. Dorothy Allison, well–known author and essayist, begins her essay by discussing how she remembers her mother's gravy and the process of making it, including the pounding of the meat in order to flatten it out. She adds pathos by saying gravy is the "most memory–laden dish" she has learned how to cook and the comfort it brings. Instead of calling it country–fried steak as others normally do, Allison's mother calls the savory dish cube steak, a more underprivileged name. Allison says, "It was not until I was grown that I understood Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. In the essays "The Miss Dennis School of Writing," by Alice Steinbach, and "No Wonder They Call me a Bitch," by Ann Hodgman, both authors use description to get across the points they wish to make. The authors' purpose for both of these essays are to catch the reader's attention as well as to provide the readers with life lessons through descriptive writing. In "The Miss Dennis School of Writing," Steinbach is trying to teach people about descriptive writing from her own experiences through her teacher Miss Dennis. In "No Wonder They Call me a Bitch", the author Hodgman is trying to point out that advertisements made by the manufactures of dog food can be misleading. In "The Miss Dennis School of Writing", the author Steinbach wants the reader to understand her experience as she explains it through her encounters with Miss Dennis and the way of writing through description. The important part taken from Steinbach's essay is that because of Miss Dennis taught her good descriptive writing, she received both a writing lesson and a life lesson, resulting in Steinbach being a successful writer. Steinbach shows her acquired lessons by using description in the essay to describe how she sees Miss Dennis and says "And now, reading over these few observations, I think of Miss Dennis. But not with sadness. Actually, thinking of Miss Dennis makes me smile. I think of her and see, with marked clarity, a small, compact woman, with apricot–colored hair," Miss Dennis says to a young girl, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
