What Does Ethics Mean? Essay
Ethically Speaking
Years ago, sociologist Raymond Baumhart was researching ethics; he asked a test group of business people, "What does ethics mean to you?"
The group had several different answers:
"Ethics has to do with my religious beliefs."
"Ethics has to do with what my feelings tell me is right or wrong."
"Being ethical is doing what the law requires."
"Ethics consist of the standards of behavior our society accepts."
"I don't know what the word means."
The answers of the test group may be representative of how most Americans would respond to this question on ethics. The truth is, most people in
general don't understand ethics, or their view is limited at best.
Ethics is a term that most people find boring and many misunderstand. Ethics is a branch of philosophy that arranges, defends, and recommends
concepts of acceptable and unacceptable conduct. Deriving from the Ancient Greek word "ethos", translated means habit or custom.
"Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all." – Aristotle
Ethics asks two basic questions:
1. "What is the best way for people to live?"
2. "What actions are right and what actions are wrong for every possible circumstance?"
Ethics involves human morality as it defines concepts of pairs such as good and evil, right and wrong, justice and crime, and virtue and vice.
There are three major areas within ethics: Meta, Normative, and Applied.
1. Meta: Theoretical meaning and

Supporters of Vivisection argue that nearly all of the major medical breakthroughs in the 20th century relied on Animal Experimentation to some
extent. The creation of Insulin, Penicillin and the Polio Vaccine were all a result ofanimal testing that while caused the death of thousands of
animals subjected to the experimentation, directly saved millions of human lives. The typical modern medical assumption is that rodents such as
rats or mice do not experience pain or discomfort in the same way that humans do, which means that the level of suffering for these animals is
considerably less than what is purported by animal rights groups. While animal rights activists publish articles about the torture inflicted upon
monkeys and apes, our close genetic relatives, in reality less than one percent of all animals used in experimentation are non–human primates.
Another significant factor for the validity of vivisection is that the number of animals used in these experiments each year is tiny compared to the
number of animals eaten for food or kept as house pets, yet there is little outcry over these multi–billion dollar industries. Any procedure
performed upon an animal can only take place if it can be successfully argued that is scientifically justified, and there are strict regulations in place
to ensure that all animal experimentation is necessary.
Ever since vivisection became common–place in modern science, so did opposition to it. There are many high–profile

Reflection On Ethics And Ethics
"Great individuals have great ethics and great values." Ethics and morality can be used interchangeably as they sound as if they mean the same
although there is a wide distinction between them. "Strictly speaking, morality is used to refer to what we would call moral standards and moral
conduct while ethics is used to refer to the formal study of those standards and conduct. For this reason, the study of ethics is also often called
moral philosophy." (Gordana D 2007)
Morality comes first which constitutes of our beliefs and practices on what is right and wrong while ethics comes next which is a reflection on
the moral principles by our conscience. Morality is influenced by law, religion, ethical relativism and professional codes.

When we have performances the amount of time we get to make a routine and practice is pretty less, so not everyone gets to be a part of the
team. Kicking someone out is not as easy as it sounds. As rebellious as youngsters are, such fights could get out of hand. After studying about
the normative theories I realised that while making decisions about who should be removed, which show to perform in etc. the main thing that
I think of is what is going to benefit more number of people the most. If I chose to remove a particular person, it brought them grief and guilt
on my behalf in the short term but in the long term, the level of performance rose leaving the crew, judges and the audience happy. Also,
sometimes we had to choose on which show to perform and which not to. In this case we would select the show which gave us more exposure
because it offers us greater benefit opposed to a show at a smaller level. Thus, in this way the theory of utilitarianism helped me make decisions
when confused about what is ethical and what is

Ethics in Psychology Essay
Ethics in Psychology Our country was founded on certain moral principles. The moral principles which guide our lives are referred to as
ethics. These ethics have an impact on how we interact with the world around us and shape our personalities; this happens even if we do not
realize their immediate impact. It is for this very reason that ethics in psychological research became necessary. "One may also define ethics as a
method, procedure, or perspective for deciding how to act and for analyzing complex problems and issues" (Resnik, 2011). We are expected to
behave or be treated a particular way in society, therefore we should be granted certain ethical treatments in regards to research. Human

Animal Subjects This is a sensitive issue area in regards to research. There are many types of research that just are not feasible to do with human
subjects; therefore the justification for non–human animals come into the experiment. Even though there are many benefits to using animals,
many animal rights groups maintain strong opposition to using animals for research. This is why the APA has developed the Committee on
Animal Research and Ethics (CARE). It is the responsibility of CARE to audit that all ethics regarding animal usage is followed ("Committee on
animal," 2014). Due to the sensitivity of testing on animals the APA has developed very strict standards regarding usage of animals as subjects.
They range from justification, housing of said animal, acquisition, and procedures. These requirements outline absolute necessity in order to
reduce the unnecessary usage of animals in testing. Therapy relationships with clients. The psychologist to patient relationship during therapy is a
crucial aspect. It is within ethical guidelines that the psychologist clearly establish his role whether it be with an individual, group, or family

Essay on Virtue Ethics
Virtue, when I hear that word I think of value and morality and only good people can be virtuous. When I hear the word ethics I think of good
versus evil, wrong and right. Now when the two are put together you get virtue ethics. You may wonder what can virtue ethics possibly mean. It's
just two words put together to form some type of fancy theory. Well this paper will discussvirtue ethics and the philosophy behind it.
Virtue ethics is a theory that focuses on character development and what virtues one should obtain to be who they are supposed to be, as oppose
to actions. An example of virtue ethics would be someone who is patient, kind, loving, generous, temperance, courage and flourishing as oppose
to a person who lies, cheats, and...show more content...
Moral relativism explains a point that when it comes to morals, right or wrong, people have their own opinion. Not everyone will think
something is bad and not everyone will think something is good. The difference between moral relativism and virtue ethics is that actions do not
matter. It is the type of person you are on the inside. Who you are on the inside will help you make righteous decisions, regardless of the
circumstances. "An ethics focused on virtue encourages us to develop the good traits and get rid of the bad ones (Mackinnon)."
Virtue ethics was written by a Greek philosopher names Aristotle. Aristotle believed that every human's goal was happiness. Some philosophers
argued that happiness only came from following a set of rules, while Aristotle argued that the best way to have happiness is to cultivate a
virtuous character. The two kinds of virtues he recognized were moral virtue and intellectual virtue. The virtue that should be focused on to
develop a virtuous character is moral virtue. According to Aristotle, while we are born with a capacity to be virtuous, being virtuous is like a
skill that we need to learn and practice to be good at. The key element to being virtuous is being able to find the mean or right amount of our
various emotions, dispositions, and actions. Aristotle wrote: "Anybody can become angry– that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and

Ethics and Education Essay
Ethics and Education
Ethics and Morals are two important words everyone knows, but which very few truly understand. Ethics is defined, in Webster's Ninth New
Collegiate Dictionary, as the discipline dealing with what is good and what is bad. Morals are defined, in the same dictionary, as those principles
of right and wrong in behavior. For Kozol in The Night Is Dark and I Am Far From Home, ethics and morals have similar definitions but extend
to include a sense of compassion for others. I agree with his argument that the purpose of schooling is to educate an ethical human being: a
person who not only lives his life by facts and knowledge but also by ethics and morals.
The need for schools to address ethics and morals is important...show more content...
Since in school are where children interact most often with any adult, it should be standard for schools to have ethics and morals in their curricula.
However, the decision of what ethics and whose morals to include in curricula poses a problem for many schools. With so many different ways
of thought and senses of morality, the ability to decide on one standardized set of ethics and morality proves to be almost impossible. The
decision is also difficult since morality at times is synonymous with religion and deciding on a particular set of morality can be interpreted as
favoring a certain religion within a school. Other problems with this system are a teacher's possible conflict with certain ethical and moral issues
they may have to convey to their students. What if a teacher does not believe in a certain ethical guideline in the curriculum or what if they do
not believe an ethical decision is required for a certain discipline? A system of ethics which encompasses many beliefs, yet does not isolate one
exactly, is the only useful method in a school.
The system of ethics that Kozol proposes does not seem to corner any particular religion and is merely a law–abiding way of life with a concern
for the welfare of others. This idea of compassion in education will cause students to be ethical and moral not only outside of the classroom

Personal Ethics Essay
Personal Ethics
In today's world, individuals can make a single decision that can have a profoundly positive or negative effect on their family, their employer,
coworkers, a nation, and even on the entire world. The life we lead reflects the strength of a single trait: our personal character. Personal ethics are
different for each person but for the most part, people want to be known as a good person, someone who can be trusted, and he or she are
concerned about his or her relationships and personal reputations. As we go through this paper, we will focus on answering what are ethics, what
are your ethics, where do your ethics come from, and how do you manifest your ethics?
What are ethics?
Let us start off with the definition of...show more content...
Morals are the intrinsic beliefs developed from the value systems of how we 'should' behave in any given situation. Ethics, on the other hand, are
how we behave in the face of difficult situations (Bottorff, 2005).
What are your ethics?
Now that we have defined ethics, we will take a look at what our ethics are. In reality, our ethical behavior is at its best when intents, means, and
ends, individually and collectively pursue a greater good. For me personally, my ethics would be based on my behavior, how I handle
situations, can I be trusted, am I reliable and responsible? Does my behavior show that my decisions are based on a greater good? Since I
understand the fact that doing good is far better than doing something bad, ethical thinking allows me to make decisions that will be right.
Hopefully, this behavior will present or leave a positive impression. For example, by displaying a positive attitude, showing a willingness to help
out, making sure my work is completed accurately and in a timely manner, rather than producing work that is inaccurate and late, will let others
know that they can trust me, and count on me to be there to help out, on both a personal and professional level.
Where do your ethics come from?
Ethics has developed as people have reflected on the intentions and consequences of their acts. From this reflection on the nature of human
behavior, theories of conscience have developed, giving direction to much ethical thinking. Each individual

Essay on Ethics
Ethics by definition is a set of rules or standards that govern the conduct of a person or members of a group. Ethics involves learning what is right
or wrong, and doing the right thing. The controversy: doing the right thing based on a moral principle or doing the right thing based on the
situation. Doing the right thing does not always mean the same thing to different people, ultimately; it is up to the individual.
Business ethics is knowing what is right or wrong in the workplace and doing what is right. Doing what is right, is not just the obvious "be
good," "don't lie," etc., in times of stress, these values are overlooked. With all the scandals showing up in the press, business ethics has come

consequences and consider the perspectives of multiple stakeholders are hardly considered mainstream in management education today. Courses

favor of applied analytical tools and techniques, conceptual models and measures of profitability." To avoid a repeat of the corporate scandals
that have plagued us for the last five years, it is important to study how business schools are teaching tomorrow's leaders. Focus must be on the
integrity of the individual, the company and society. Managers and leaders need to have alternatives to a profit–based style of management.
The blame cannot be placed wholly on the faculty of the businesses schools. Some students disregard the importance of classes on corporate social
responsibility. Often, once enrolled in a business program, students seem to lose the idealism they may have brought to the course. Even if they
manage to graduate with their idealism in place, many students enter the business world thinking they cannot change the corporate attitude.
Businesses themselves need to lead a charge for a rebirth of ethical business practices. There are companies out there, Johnson & Johnson,

Essay about Ethical Behavior
The definition of ethical behavior or ethics as a whole is one that eludes many people. There have been many philosophers that have tried to
create a set of guidelines that create a code or baseline to a decision. Immanuel Kant is one such person who has created some of the bases
that all theories have been based. Kant's principals or the categorical imperative is the base for the "Golden Rule"; which is taught to young
children. Do on to others, as you would have others do on to you. To quote Kant, "Act that your principle of action might safely be made a law
for the whole world." Ethical behavior is the way that a person should act using a set of rules or standards that have been formed within a
community of people. These communities...show more content...
If the decision hurts more people than it helps then the action should be deemed unethical. This is just one method of finding the ethicality of
an action. In this situation bribing a public official is unethical because it creates an environment where that public official is loyal to both
the company as well as the constituents that elected them. This creates a situation where the official may have to choose the company that
gave them money over the will of the people that have placed their faith and power on them. Laws are the written word that states what can
and cannot be done. Most of these laws are based on ethical principals. It is illegal to willfully kill another person without extenuating
circumstances being present. This law is to help protect all people's lives from the actions of other people. This law is ethical in most
circumstances but if we use the same calculation as before we could find a situation where killing a person could be justified as "for the
common good". One example of this would be a serial killer; this type of person is dangerous and is a menace to society. Using common logic it
would be acceptable to remove this person from the public, thus protecting a large portion of the population from harm. In this situation is it
ethical to kill another human being? Some people say that there are no circumstances where

this information may be, it is important to maintain an ethical outlook to all research topics. As research and its subsequent experimentations

According to the National Institute of Health, stem cells are unique cells created from embryos for infertility purposes usually through the process
of in vitro fertilization (Institute on Health). Stems cells have two important characteristics that differentiate them from other types of cells. One
is that they are unspecialized cells that rejuvenate themselves through cell division. The other is that, under certain conditions, they can be
induced to become certain specialized cells (Institute on Health). For certain people this is life saving news. Now that cells can be specialized
under these unspecialized stem cells, a patient can receive new heart cells for a diseased heart or many other life threatening diseases (Institute on

potential humans that could help them world in some other way? This is the perspective of many people fighting against stem–cell research.
These activists claim that stem–cell research plays against the will of God. Moreover, if stem cell research is legalized world–wide, who is to say
that people will use it only to benefit the curing of disease? Is it possible that people will become careless and more susceptible to disease only to

Ethical behaviour is what all career people should aim to have. Not just the ethical attribute but exceptional behaviour with this regard.this is

Academic dishonesty is another facet of unethical behaviour. It is an action or attempt that results in creating an unfair academic advantage for
oneself or a disadvantage for any other member of academic community. A child uses his or her experiences in society to shape personal ethics.
Family has a strong influence on one's values and behaviour, parents establish rules from the start and it becomes the basis for our ethics and
morals. A personal ethical commitment is part of what makes students a success. A lack of ethical commitment will always result in acdemic
failure. I personally believe that students who are academically dishonest cheat themselves out of an education and harm their fellow students by
screwing the grading curve for the class as a whole. Therefore academic ethics are vital and students should commit themselves to maintaining
highest personal ethical standards.
In society today, people tend to make decisions based on the actions and choices of others. Peer pressure is a very real issue that affects most of

that we see is over and under reporting net income. Companies like to show that every quarter the net income of the business has an increase or

Chapter 3, Question 14 Assuming that the demand and supply for premium coffees are in equilibrium, the price will be at a constant, without
significant pressure from the market. If Starbucks introduced the world to premium blends, this would cause a positive shift in the demand curve.
There a higher equilibrium price and higher quantity when demand increases and supply remain unchanged. As prices increase, and the market
moves to a new equilibrium, we will see higher wages, more advances and investments in technology and infrastructure, and greater competition.
As production become more efficient and competition becomes greater, supply will increase and cause prices to settle back down. There are
several factors that will impact the long–term equilibrium, such as changes in supply. For example, if a hard freeze eliminated Brazil's premium
coffee crop, this would cause a negative shift in the supply curve. Assuming demand remains constant a negative shift in the supply curve will
cause quantity to decrease and equilibrium price to increase. Research shows that in 2011 a frost occurred in Brazil's southeastern coffee
growing belt. Traders worried that next year's yields could be hurt. At the same time, heavy rains during harvest forced Columbia to reduce its
crop estimate for 2011. Understanding the impact of problems along the supply chain and how the changes in supply

In their personal and professional lives, people can and, unfortunately, sometimes do go against their moral and ethical standards. Ethical
standards are what it means to be a good person, the social rules that govern our behavior. Ethics in business is essentially the study of what
constitutes the right and wrong or the good or bad behavior in the workplace environment. A business is an organization whose objective is to

so many of the scandals we've seen, like WorldCom and Enron, said
Fallin. It's not what happens to you that determines where you are in life, but its how you respond to what happens to you. (Smith, 2005, 7)
What a valuable employee, Sue definitely took the high road and handled that dilemma with integrity. Each person has many reasons for being
ethical. Some reasons can be: inner beliefs, habits, virtue because it is its own reward, personal advantages, it's good business, there is approval,
being an ethical person can lead to self–esteem, the admiration of loved ones and the respect of peers. There is also religion because it is
believed that good behavior can please or help serve a deity. Ethical actions can fit in with upbringing or training. Ethics starts with the individual
employee choosing the right or wrong decision.
The second ethical dilemma that our group provided was one that dealt with sexual harassment. Sexual harassment encompasses a wide range of

Ethics And Ethics Of Ethics
Ethics affect every facet of life, especially in a professional community. When a decision is to be made within a community, the ethical decision
is typically that which benefits the most people or harms the least people. There are some scenarios however, when the correct decision based on
a system of ethics that values doing the right thing is not the decision that leaves behind the least negative impact on the organization. An
organization must decide if it will follow the system of ethics that Socrates once set out that says a man must do what is right, that he must be
a good man, or if it will follow the system that says do whatever is most beneficial to those involved (The Ethics of Socrates p54). A scenario
of a project manager who wants to push a product into distribution by a given date while the developer of the product wants to hold on the
release of the product in order to make improvements has been posed. Many factors must be considered when making a decision in this scenario
with the largest factor being the system of ethics being used to make the decision. Defining a correct ethical solution as one that meets the ethical
criteria such that the person following the set of ethics falls on the right side of morality, the ethical solution to the manager and developers
problem comes down to the motivation behind the individuals request and the outcomes they desire. Different desired outcomes and motivations
for both the manager and the developer based on the system

Reflective Essay On Ethics
Ethical and unethical situations occur on a daily basis and are seen all around us. Being ethical requires one to take responsibility for their actions
and doing what is right in any given circumstance. Every person has the power to dictate their actions on how they are going to handle any
situation they are put in. I have experienced numerous amounts of situations that have tested my ethical behavior and actions. Throughout my
experiences, I have realized that ethics has a great impact on many different aspects of life such as society, career, and personal life.
Understanding the meaning of ethics allows me to grow as a person and to truly do what is right with any issue I am faced with.

ethical has a lot to do with the way one was brought up and the values that were instilled into them from a young age. My ethical views
originated from my upbringing and the lessons my parents taught me. My parents are big believers of always doing the right thing and that
mindset got passed onto me. My ethical values shape who I am as a person and impacts the way I go about life. Ethics is extremely important to

Philosophy of Ethics Essay
The word "ethics" comes from Greek ethikas meaning character. Today, we use ethics to describe the normative standard of behavior. The history
of philosophical ethics has been broken up into five rational methods: Virtue, Traditional, Modern, and Post–Modern Ethics. Within these periods,
the philosophy of ethics changed along with the changes being made within society. The first rational method isVirtue Ethics. The major
philosophers during this period were materialists such as Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, and Plutarch. Greek were concerned with finding eudaimonia

One of the last major philosophers of Virtue Ethics was Plutarch who advocated virtue but disagreed with Epicurus because he believed there was
no true pleasure. At this same time, between 400 B.C.– 40 B.C. Stoic philosophers such Cicero, who combined the philosophies of Aristotle and
Plato, developed his idea on ethics and how everyone has a duty and should imitate virtue for others. He said duty has two points which are to
achieve the Supreme Good, and follow the rules for daily living. Cicero was a strong believer in rationality incorporated Plato's Cardinal Virtues
into his three rules of conduct: master desires through reason, know true value of goals and be moderate in actions and lifestyle. Following Virtue
Ethics, a major shift occurred in thinking. The philosophers of Virtue Ethics were materialists and believed we only have what we have and after
death, we have nothing. Traditional Ethics shifted the focus on religion once it began to spread. Also known as Biblical Ethics, philosophers
started a systematic study of Biblical themes and principles surrounding ethics and morality. St. Augustine was trained as a philosopher and
combines his understanding of the Bible to ethics by answering the same question as Plato and Aristotle did, "What is the highest good?" He
answered this question with happiness just like Aristotle but since Aristotle

My Personal Ethics Essay
According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, ethics is defined as "moral principles that govern a person's or group's behavior." Therefore,
in an ideal world, ethics should play the ultimate role when making a decision. If ethics are the principles which guides one's behavior then,
ideally, all decisions should be made entirely based on ethics. Unfortunately, such is not always the case.
A few problems arise when one tries to make an ethical decision, especially as a leader. First, ethics may mean different things to different
people. For example, my religious and spiritual beliefs are the foundation for what I deem ethical. However, for someone else, ethics might be
based on laws or their own personal understanding of what is...show more content...
Recognizing that not all decisions are ethical, one's moral principles acts as a guide for their behavior and decision making. Therefore, ethics do
(and should) play a major role in decision making.
As previously mentioned, my religious and spiritual beliefs shape my personal ethics. I grew up in a very Christian family (one grandfather
was a pastor and the other is a deacon), so from a young age, I was instilled with a belief in God and His teachings, according to the Bible. As I
get older, I am learning that a spiritual journey and relationship with God is one that is personal and cannot be easily taught or given by
others. Therefore, I will admit that as I continue on my personal journey with God, my personal ethics are still being developed and shaped.
Some behaviors that I may have thought were acceptable in the past, I no longer view the same. For example, I have a lot of passion for the
organizations I am involved with, especially S.M.A.R.T, which is great as a leader. It is my passion which keeps me dedicated to the
organization. However, because of this passion, when things are not going as I want them to, it might cause me to communicate in a way that is
considered disrespectful to others. Either my tone, the loudness of my voice, or the things that I say have made others feel disrespected.
Personally, I find disrespecting others to be unethical. Although I may not consciously decide to disrespect them, it is a result of my behavior.
While, at one point, I

Essay About Ethics

  • 1. What Does Ethics Mean? Essay Ethically Speaking Years ago, sociologist Raymond Baumhart was researching ethics; he asked a test group of business people, "What does ethics mean to you?" The group had several different answers: "Ethics has to do with my religious beliefs." "Ethics has to do with what my feelings tell me is right or wrong." "Being ethical is doing what the law requires." "Ethics consist of the standards of behavior our society accepts." "I don't know what the word means." The answers of the test group may be representative of how most Americans would respond to this question on ethics. The truth is, most people in general don't understand ethics, or their view is limited at best. Ethics is a term that most people find boring and many misunderstand. Ethics is a branch of philosophy that arranges, defends, and recommends concepts of acceptable and unacceptable conduct. Deriving from the Ancient Greek word "ethos", translated means habit or custom. "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all." – Aristotle Ethics asks two basic questions: 1. "What is the best way for people to live?" 2. "What actions are right and what actions are wrong for every possible circumstance?" Ethics involves human morality as it defines concepts of pairs such as good and evil, right and wrong, justice and crime, and virtue and vice. There are three major areas within ethics: Meta, Normative, and Applied. 1. Meta: Theoretical meaning and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Discuss ethical considerations related to research studies at the sociocultural level of analysis. Supporters of Vivisection argue that nearly all of the major medical breakthroughs in the 20th century relied on Animal Experimentation to some extent. The creation of Insulin, Penicillin and the Polio Vaccine were all a result ofanimal testing that while caused the death of thousands of animals subjected to the experimentation, directly saved millions of human lives. The typical modern medical assumption is that rodents such as rats or mice do not experience pain or discomfort in the same way that humans do, which means that the level of suffering for these animals is considerably less than what is purported by animal rights groups. While animal rights activists publish articles about the torture inflicted upon monkeys and apes, our close genetic relatives, in reality less than one percent of all animals used in experimentation are non–human primates. Another significant factor for the validity of vivisection is that the number of animals used in these experiments each year is tiny compared to the number of animals eaten for food or kept as house pets, yet there is little outcry over these multi–billion dollar industries. Any procedure performed upon an animal can only take place if it can be successfully argued that is scientifically justified, and there are strict regulations in place to ensure that all animal experimentation is necessary. Ever since vivisection became common–place in modern science, so did opposition to it. There are many high–profile

Ethics and morality can be used interchangeably as they sound as if they mean the same although there is a wide distinction between them. "Strictly speaking, morality is used to refer to what we would call moral standards and moral conduct while ethics is used to refer to the formal study of those standards and conduct. For this reason, the study of ethics is also often called moral philosophy." (Gordana D 2007) Morality comes first which constitutes of our beliefs and practices on what is right and wrong while ethics comes next which is a reflection on the moral principles by our conscience. Morality is influenced by law, religion, ethical relativism and professional codes. On the other hand, we can...show more content... When we have performances the amount of time we get to make a routine and practice is pretty less, so not everyone gets to be a part of the team. Kicking someone out is not as easy as it sounds. As rebellious as youngsters are, such fights could get out of hand. After studying about the normative theories I realised that while making decisions about who should be removed, which show to perform in etc. the main thing that I think of is what is going to benefit more number of people the most. If I chose to remove a particular person, it brought them grief and guilt on my behalf in the short term but in the long term, the level of performance rose leaving the crew, judges and the audience happy. Also, sometimes we had to choose on which show to perform and which not to. In this case we would select the show which gave us more exposure because it offers us greater benefit opposed to a show at a smaller level. Thus, in this way the theory of utilitarianism helped me make decisions when confused about what is ethical and what is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Ethics in Psychology Essay Ethics in Psychology Our country was founded on certain moral principles. The moral principles which guide our lives are referred to as ethics. These ethics have an impact on how we interact with the world around us and shape our personalities; this happens even if we do not realize their immediate impact. It is for this very reason that ethics in psychological research became necessary. "One may also define ethics as a method, procedure, or perspective for deciding how to act and for analyzing complex problems and issues" (Resnik, 2011). We are expected to behave or be treated a particular way in society, therefore we should be granted certain ethical treatments in regards to research. Human Participants According to the American...show more content... Animal Subjects This is a sensitive issue area in regards to research. There are many types of research that just are not feasible to do with human subjects; therefore the justification for non–human animals come into the experiment. Even though there are many benefits to using animals, many animal rights groups maintain strong opposition to using animals for research. This is why the APA has developed the Committee on Animal Research and Ethics (CARE). It is the responsibility of CARE to audit that all ethics regarding animal usage is followed ("Committee on animal," 2014). Due to the sensitivity of testing on animals the APA has developed very strict standards regarding usage of animals as subjects. They range from justification, housing of said animal, acquisition, and procedures. These requirements outline absolute necessity in order to reduce the unnecessary usage of animals in testing. Therapy relationships with clients. The psychologist to patient relationship during therapy is a crucial aspect. It is within ethical guidelines that the psychologist clearly establish his role whether it be with an individual, group, or family therapist. These roles need to be understood for the variety of issues that may arise; one of which is the disclosure of information. Psychologists, for obvious reasons, are not to have sexual relationships with patients or former patients within a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Essay on Virtue Ethics Virtue, when I hear that word I think of value and morality and only good people can be virtuous. When I hear the word ethics I think of good versus evil, wrong and right. Now when the two are put together you get virtue ethics. You may wonder what can virtue ethics possibly mean. It's just two words put together to form some type of fancy theory. Well this paper will discussvirtue ethics and the philosophy behind it. Virtue ethics is a theory that focuses on character development and what virtues one should obtain to be who they are supposed to be, as oppose to actions. An example of virtue ethics would be someone who is patient, kind, loving, generous, temperance, courage and flourishing as oppose to a person who lies, cheats, and...show more content... Moral relativism explains a point that when it comes to morals, right or wrong, people have their own opinion. Not everyone will think something is bad and not everyone will think something is good. The difference between moral relativism and virtue ethics is that actions do not matter. It is the type of person you are on the inside. Who you are on the inside will help you make righteous decisions, regardless of the circumstances. "An ethics focused on virtue encourages us to develop the good traits and get rid of the bad ones (Mackinnon)." Virtue ethics was written by a Greek philosopher names Aristotle. Aristotle believed that every human's goal was happiness. Some philosophers argued that happiness only came from following a set of rules, while Aristotle argued that the best way to have happiness is to cultivate a virtuous character. The two kinds of virtues he recognized were moral virtue and intellectual virtue. The virtue that should be focused on to develop a virtuous character is moral virtue. According to Aristotle, while we are born with a capacity to be virtuous, being virtuous is like a skill that we need to learn and practice to be good at. The key element to being virtuous is being able to find the mean or right amount of our various emotions, dispositions, and actions. Aristotle wrote: "Anybody can become angry– that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Ethics and Education Essay Ethics and Education Ethics and Morals are two important words everyone knows, but which very few truly understand. Ethics is defined, in Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, as the discipline dealing with what is good and what is bad. Morals are defined, in the same dictionary, as those principles of right and wrong in behavior. For Kozol in The Night Is Dark and I Am Far From Home, ethics and morals have similar definitions but extend to include a sense of compassion for others. I agree with his argument that the purpose of schooling is to educate an ethical human being: a person who not only lives his life by facts and knowledge but also by ethics and morals. The need for schools to address ethics and morals is important...show more content... Since in school are where children interact most often with any adult, it should be standard for schools to have ethics and morals in their curricula. However, the decision of what ethics and whose morals to include in curricula poses a problem for many schools. With so many different ways of thought and senses of morality, the ability to decide on one standardized set of ethics and morality proves to be almost impossible. The decision is also difficult since morality at times is synonymous with religion and deciding on a particular set of morality can be interpreted as favoring a certain religion within a school. Other problems with this system are a teacher's possible conflict with certain ethical and moral issues they may have to convey to their students. What if a teacher does not believe in a certain ethical guideline in the curriculum or what if they do not believe an ethical decision is required for a certain discipline? A system of ethics which encompasses many beliefs, yet does not isolate one exactly, is the only useful method in a school. The system of ethics that Kozol proposes does not seem to corner any particular religion and is merely a law–abiding way of life with a concern for the welfare of others. This idea of compassion in education will cause students to be ethical and moral not only outside of the classroom

Personal Ethics Essay Personal Ethics In today's world, individuals can make a single decision that can have a profoundly positive or negative effect on their family, their employer, coworkers, a nation, and even on the entire world. The life we lead reflects the strength of a single trait: our personal character. Personal ethics are different for each person but for the most part, people want to be known as a good person, someone who can be trusted, and he or she are concerned about his or her relationships and personal reputations. As we go through this paper, we will focus on answering what are ethics, what are your ethics, where do your ethics come from, and how do you manifest your ethics? What are ethics? Let us start off with the definition of...show more content... Morals are the intrinsic beliefs developed from the value systems of how we 'should' behave in any given situation. Ethics, on the other hand, are how we behave in the face of difficult situations (Bottorff, 2005). What are your ethics? Now that we have defined ethics, we will take a look at what our ethics are. In reality, our ethical behavior is at its best when intents, means, and ends, individually and collectively pursue a greater good. For me personally, my ethics would be based on my behavior, how I handle situations, can I be trusted, am I reliable and responsible? Does my behavior show that my decisions are based on a greater good? Since I understand the fact that doing good is far better than doing something bad, ethical thinking allows me to make decisions that will be right. Hopefully, this behavior will present or leave a positive impression. For example, by displaying a positive attitude, showing a willingness to help out, making sure my work is completed accurately and in a timely manner, rather than producing work that is inaccurate and late, will let others know that they can trust me, and count on me to be there to help out, on both a personal and professional level. Where do your ethics come from?

Ethics involves learning what is right or wrong, and doing the right thing. The controversy: doing the right thing based on a moral principle or doing the right thing based on the situation. Doing the right thing does not always mean the same thing to different people, ultimately; it is up to the individual. Business ethics is knowing what is right or wrong in the workplace and doing what is right. Doing what is right, is not just the obvious "be good," "don't lie," etc., in times of stress, these values are overlooked. "Unfortunately, the courses that might teach students to be mindful of consequences and consider the perspectives of multiple stakeholders are hardly considered mainstream in management education today. Courses on ethics, corporate responsibility, business/public policy, stakeholder relationships, and other "soft" subjects are typically given short shrift in favor of applied analytical tools and techniques, conceptual models and measures of profitability." To avoid a repeat of the corporate scandals that have plagued us for the last five years, it is important to study how business schools are teaching tomorrow's leaders. Focus must be on the integrity of the individual, the company and society. Managers and leaders need to have alternatives to a profit–based style of management. The blame cannot be placed wholly on the faculty of the businesses schools. Some students disregard the importance of classes on corporate social responsibility. Often, once enrolled in a business program, students seem to lose the idealism they may have brought to the course. Even if they manage to graduate with their idealism in place, many students enter the business world thinking they cannot change the corporate attitude. Businesses themselves need to lead a charge for a rebirth of ethical business practices. There are companies out there, Johnson & Johnson, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Essay about Ethical Behavior The definition of ethical behavior or ethics as a whole is one that eludes many people. There have been many philosophers that have tried to create a set of guidelines that create a code or baseline to a decision. Immanuel Kant is one such person who has created some of the bases that all theories have been based. Kant's principals or the categorical imperative is the base for the "Golden Rule"; which is taught to young children. Do on to others, as you would have others do on to you. To quote Kant, "Act that your principle of action might safely be made a law for the whole world." Ethical behavior is the way that a person should act using a set of rules or standards that have been formed within a community of people. These communities...show more content... If the decision hurts more people than it helps then the action should be deemed unethical. This is just one method of finding the ethicality of an action. In this situation bribing a public official is unethical because it creates an environment where that public official is loyal to both the company as well as the constituents that elected them. This creates a situation where the official may have to choose the company that gave them money over the will of the people that have placed their faith and power on them. Laws are the written word that states what can and cannot be done. Most of these laws are based on ethical principals. It is illegal to willfully kill another person without extenuating circumstances being present. This law is to help protect all people's lives from the actions of other people. This law is ethical in most circumstances but if we use the same calculation as before we could find a situation where killing a person could be justified as "for the common good". One example of this would be a serial killer; this type of person is dangerous and is a menace to society. Using common logic it would be acceptable to remove this person from the public, thus protecting a large portion of the population from harm. In this situation is it ethical to kill another human being? Some people say that there are no circumstances where Get more content on HelpWriting.net

However, abundant as this information may be, it is important to maintain an ethical outlook to all research topics. As research and its subsequent experimentations advance in light of new generations, the idea of ethics becomes a more prominent issue. According to the National Institute of Health, stem cells are unique cells created from embryos for infertility purposes usually through the process of in vitro fertilization (Institute on Health). Stems cells have two important characteristics that differentiate them from other types of cells. One is that they are unspecialized cells that rejuvenate themselves through cell division. The other is that, under certain conditions, they can be induced to become certain specialized cells (Institute on Health). For certain people this is life saving news. Now that cells can be specialized under these unspecialized stem cells, a patient can receive new heart cells for a diseased heart or many other life threatening diseases (Institute on Health). This information can be used in a variety of useful ways, but is it morally right to create embryos only to destroy them? Are these potential humans that could help them world in some other way? This is the perspective of many people fighting against stem–cell research. These activists claim that stem–cell research plays against the will of God. Moreover, if stem cell research is legalized world–wide, who is to say that people will use it only to benefit the curing of disease? Family has a strong influence on one's values and behaviour, parents establish rules from the start and it becomes the basis for our ethics and morals. A personal ethical commitment is part of what makes students a success. A lack of ethical commitment will always result in acdemic failure. It seems that every day in the news we are hearing of new company that has acted at least unethically and possibly illegally in the operation and financial reporting of their company's business dealings. There are many ethical issues in business. One major issue that we see is over and under reporting net income. Companies like to show that every quarter the net income of the business has an increase or profit. In order to show this they adopt unethical or illegal means in the operation and financial reporting. One such method is the indiscriminate use of stock options for employees that enable companies to take employment costs off balance sheet and inflate earnings. Chapter 3, Question 14 Assuming that the demand and supply for premium coffees are in equilibrium, the price will be at a constant, without significant pressure from the market. If Starbucks introduced the world to premium blends, this would cause a positive shift in the demand curve. There a higher equilibrium price and higher quantity when demand increases and supply remain unchanged. As prices increase, and the market moves to a new equilibrium, we will see higher wages, more advances and investments in technology and infrastructure, and greater competition. As production become more efficient and competition becomes greater, supply will increase and cause prices to settle back down. There are several factors that will impact the long–term equilibrium, such as changes in supply. For example, if a hard freeze eliminated Brazil's premium coffee crop, this would cause a negative shift in the supply curve. Assuming demand remains constant a negative shift in the supply curve will cause quantity to decrease and equilibrium price to increase. Research shows that in 2011 a frost occurred in Brazil's southeastern coffee growing belt. Traders worried that next year's yields could be hurt. At the same time, heavy rains during harvest forced Columbia to reduce its crop estimate for 2011. Mary Fallin in Oklahoma: It's hard at times to find people that will take the high road, and that's why we see so many of the scandals we've seen, like WorldCom and Enron, said Fallin. It's not what happens to you that determines where you are in life, but its how you respond to what happens to you. (Smith, 2005, 7) What a valuable employee, Sue definitely took the high road and handled that dilemma with integrity. Each person has many reasons for being ethical. Some reasons can be: inner beliefs, habits, virtue because it is its own reward, personal advantages, it's good business, there is approval, being an ethical person can lead to self–esteem, the admiration of loved ones and the respect of peers. There is also religion because it is believed that good behavior can please or help serve a deity. Ethical actions can fit in with upbringing or training. • 18. Ethics And Ethics Of Ethics Ethics affect every facet of life, especially in a professional community. When a decision is to be made within a community, the ethical decision is typically that which benefits the most people or harms the least people. There are some scenarios however, when the correct decision based on a system of ethics that values doing the right thing is not the decision that leaves behind the least negative impact on the organization. An organization must decide if it will follow the system of ethics that Socrates once set out that says a man must do what is right, that he must be a good man, or if it will follow the system that says do whatever is most beneficial to those involved (The Ethics of Socrates p54). A scenario of a project manager who wants to push a product into distribution by a given date while the developer of the product wants to hold on the release of the product in order to make improvements has been posed. Many factors must be considered when making a decision in this scenario with the largest factor being the system of ethics being used to make the decision. Defining a correct ethical solution as one that meets the ethical criteria such that the person following the set of ethics falls on the right side of morality, the ethical solution to the manager and developers problem comes down to the motivation behind the individuals request and the outcomes they desire. Environmental ethics challenges these beliefs by questioning the assumed moral superiority of human beings to members of other species on earth (SEP, 2008). Preservation of the environment is essential to the preservation of the human race. Global Warming is the number one concern threatening the very existence of humans and everything within the environment today. The human race is to blame for the destruction of the natural world. The environmental issues that are threatening all human and non–human life today, started in the industrial revolution and the discovery of oil The need to improve the quality of life resulted in the construction of factories to mass produce products for consumers. These factories were powered by fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. The combustion of these fossil fuels emitted great quantities of pollutants that remain in the Earths atmosphere to this day and is the number one cause of global warming. However, in ethics one cannot evaluate just one thing. In ethics, as in nature, everything is connected to everything else (Partridge, 1998). Following Virtue Ethics, a major shift occurred in thinking. The philosophers of Virtue Ethics were materialists and believed we only have what we have and after death, we have nothing. Traditional Ethics shifted the focus on religion once it began to spread. Also known as Biblical Ethics, philosophers started a systematic study of Biblical themes and principles surrounding ethics and morality. St. Augustine was trained as a philosopher and combines his understanding of the Bible to ethics by answering the same question as Plato and Aristotle did, "What is the highest good?" • 23. My Personal Ethics Essay According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, ethics is defined as "moral principles that govern a person's or group's behavior." Therefore, in an ideal world, ethics should play the ultimate role when making a decision. If ethics are the principles which guides one's behavior then, ideally, all decisions should be made entirely based on ethics. Unfortunately, such is not always the case. A few problems arise when one tries to make an ethical decision, especially as a leader. First, ethics may mean different things to different people. Recognizing that not all decisions are ethical, one's moral principles acts as a guide for their behavior and decision making. Therefore, ethics do (and should) play a major role in decision making. As previously mentioned, my religious and spiritual beliefs shape my personal ethics. I grew up in a very Christian family (one grandfather was a pastor and the other is a deacon), so from a young age, I was instilled with a belief in God and His teachings, according to the Bible. As I get older, I am learning that a spiritual journey and relationship with God is one that is personal and cannot be easily taught or given by others. Therefore, I will admit that as I continue on my personal journey with God, my personal ethics are still being developed and shaped. Some behaviors that I may have thought were acceptable in the past, I no longer view the same. For example, I have a lot of passion for the organizations I am involved with, especially S.M.A.R.T, which is great as a leader. It is my passion which keeps me dedicated to the organization. However, because of this passion, when things are not going as I want them to, it might cause me to communicate in a way that is considered disrespectful to others. Either my tone, the loudness of my voice, or the things that I say have made others feel disrespected. Personally, I find disrespecting others to be unethical. Although I may not consciously decide to disrespect them, it is a result of my behavior. While, at one point, I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
