in Pakistan
Some of the important international agencies that are involved
in the protection and preservation of threatened species are as
under :
IUCN
CITES
WWF
IWC
3. I.U.C.N:
•International union for the conservation of nature and natural
resources.
•It was founded in 1948.
•Under the auspices of UNO.
•The world conservation union brings together states,
Governement, and a number of Non-governemental organization
in a unique world partnership.
•There are about 900 members spread over in 133 countries.
•IUCN encourages and assists societies throughout the world.
•IUCN brings out an updated RED LIST (popularly known as red
data book).
4. C.I.T.E.S:
• Convention on international trade in endangered
species.
• Under the auspices of IUCN.
• International agreement was signed by member
countries in 1975.
• With the aim of regulating trade in endangered species
of plants and animals.
• 110 countries have ratified this agreement.
• CITES gives protection to 800 highly endangered
species of plants and animals.
5. W.W.F:
• World Wide Fund for Nature.
• WWF was formed in 1961.
• Its headquarter is in Switzerland.
• There are 25 national organization in five
countries, with more than 2 million volunteers.
• In every member country, a number of wild life
projects are guided and financed by WWF.
• Many species of beautiful birds and mammals have
been rescued by WWF.
6. I.W.C:
• International Whalling Commission.
• This commission was established in 1946.
• To try and avoid the extinction of whales as a result of
ruthless killings, and 40 members.
• The IWC allocates quota of whales that member
countries may catch.
