EQUIPMENTS THAT ARE USED IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
The construction industry could be divided into three parts:
1- Construction Of Buildings.
2- Construction Of Roads.
CONSTRUCTION OF BUILDINGS
The materials used in construction of building are as follows:
I- EXCAVATORS
Excavators are large construction equipment that can be available over wheels or tracks; the latest
one considered the standard in industry. A traditional excavator usually has a long bucket arm attached to a pivoting
cab that can rotate a full 360 degrees. The operator’s sites in the cabs and from there he can be able to have visibility
of the site.
USES
 Excavators are used most of times to dig or to lift heavy
pieces including prefab pieces, pipes and other smaller
equipment. The most common use of an excavator are:
 Material Handling.
 Digging of trenches, holes and foundations.
 Brush cutting with hydraulic attachments.
 Demolition.
 Rough Grading.
 Heavy lifting and pipe installation.
 Mining.
 River dredging.
II- BACKHOE LOADERS
Backhoe loaders are very similar to tractors with a slight
difference: they contain an adjustable, shovel in the front of
equipment, and the small bucket in the back of loader used for
digging. Backhoe loaders are considered medium sized

construction equipment for small jobs, and with limited space to perform operations.
USES
They can move dirt, backfill, dig trenches, and place smaller pipes into place. One of the best attributes of backhoe
loaders is that they are tire mounted and they can be used in unbanized area patios. The bucket in the back can be
modified using different attachments allowing you to dig trenches of different widths.
III- BULLDOZERS
Bulldozers are considered one of most versatile machines available in the
construction industry. It is powerful and extremely heavy equipment used to
move dirt along large open tracks of land. Bulldozers have a wide flat blade in
front that can be operated using two hydraulic pistons allowing the blade to
moved in limited angles or depths.
USES
 They are normally used to push piles of earth and for rough grading
depending on the size of bulldozer.
 Its weight can be used to crush larger boulders among other actions.
IV- SKID-STEER LOADERS
A skid-steer loader is a small, rigid frame, engine-
powered machine with lift arms used to attach a wide variety of labor-
saving tools or attachments. A skid-steer loader can be assembled with so
many different attachments, which makes it one of the most valuable tools
every contractor must have or rent in order to be successful.
USES
 The equipment can be used almost in all construction trades
with some simple adjustments making it ideal for tight places.
V- MOTOR GRADERS
Motor grader is a construction machine
with a long blade used to create a flat surface during grading
process. Motor graders are heavy equipment used to move
small amount of dirt. This equipment can normally have a

second bladein front of the first axle and in some instances can be used for under ground mining.
USES
 They are normally used to fine grade dirt or gravel roads, or to prepare the base coarse before placing
asphalt.
 Graders cam be used to produced slope surfaces or drainage ditches with shallow V-shaped cross-
sections.
VI- CRAWLER LOADERS
There is another great piece of construction equipment. Combining the
capabilities of an excavator with a backhoe , this one will be able to get
increase your production when you are hauling material off or on-site
because they are track mounted, they can move easily without need of
additional transportation.
USES
 They can be used to load spoils into trucks and to dump soils in
different locations.
VII- TRENCHERS
A trencher is an construction equipment used to dig trenches on
which pipes can be laid down. There are several trencher models: walk-
behind modules, small size operated trenchers or heavy trenching equipment
that can be used to trench pavement asphalt or other hard surfaces. The
trencher has a conveyor system that carries the excavated material and
locates it next to the trench been made. Trenchers can use different digging
implements depending upon how is the material to be cut. Trenchers must
be handled with extreme care because they are very dangerous equipment.
VIII- SCRAPERS
A scrape can move dirt and aggregates within the site
easily and without the needs of additional equipment. However,
they are not meant to be used for all construction sites.

USES
 This type of heavy equipment is used in large open areas when they can run at higher speeds and
facilitate the cut and fill activities.
IX- COMMON DUMP TRUCKS
Dump trucks are needed on almost every site and they are
considered a construction heavy equipment. They are multiple sizes
and variations to move your load easily and effectively . Off-road or
regular dump trucks, they are used in all construction projects.
USES
 Dump trucks are used to move aggregates from one point
to another and using hydraulic components to lift up the rear
contents so it fall to the ground.
CONSTRUCTION OF ROADS
The materials which are required to construct a road are as follows:
I- AIR-TRACK DRILL:-
A heavy drilling machine for quarry or open cast blasting
equipped with tracks and operated by independent air motors. It tows its
rotator compressor and drills holes 3 to 4 inches ( 7.6 cm or 10.2 cm ) in
diameter at any angle, but it is chiefly used for vertical holes up to 80 feet in
depth.
II- CHIP SPREADER
Chip spreader lays down the aggregate on the top of bituminous
binder which is then rolled by a compactor.

III- COLD PLANERS
A cold planer ( also known as
pavement planer ) , is a machine used to remove a
bituminous pavement or asphalt concrete from
road ways.
IV- COMPACTORS:-
Compactor is a machine used to reduce the size of material such as
waste material or bio mass through compaction.
V- VIBRATORY STEEL DRUM CAPACITOR
Vibratory roller compactor is used to compact soil, gravel,
concrete, or asphalt in construction of roads and foundations.
VI- PNEUMATIC TIRED ROLLER
Pneumatic tired roller or compactors are used on small to
medium size compaction jobs, primarily on bladed, granular base materials.
VII- PADDED DRUM COMPACTOR
Padded drum compactors is used to compact soil, gravel,
concrete, or asphalt in construction of roads and foundations.

VIII- Oil Distributers:-
oil distributers are used to apply prime or tack coats on a surface in parathion of paving.
IX- Paver:-
A paver is a machine used to lay asphalt on road ways. It is
normally fed by a dump truck which brings hot asphalt.
