2. PROMOTIONAL MOVIETRAILER.
• From my research done into existing modern examples of trailers there were some
common conventions used in nearly all of the trailers investigated that I eventually included
into my final production.
• An example of these that I attempted to use in my trailer was the use of changes in my
chosen background music tempo and style to reflect changes in the pace of the trailer. As
the drop occurs in the music the shots are far shorter and the transitions from shot to shot
become much quicker to emphasise the introduction of the genre of action into my trailer.
• A feature that I was unable to include in my trailer due to time constraints with the
schedule of one of the participants in my trailer was found during my initial research stage.
This was an editing choice used in the trailer from the third instalment of the Pirates of the
Caribbean series at about the 1:54 mark when beats in the soundtrack matched the clashes
of the swords during a fight between the films protagonist and antagonist.
• This is a feature that I would have loved to have included this idea into my trailer as it is a
great way to emphasise the action occurring in the shot and make it have greater effect on
the consumer while watching.
3. PROMOTIONAL POSTER.
• The purpose of the poster is to draw the attention of passer-by's and give them a quick insight into the film
being advertised e.g. genre, narrative, certification and release dates.
• Conventions used for my poster:
-Film details including cast and production studio’s located in small text at the bottom of the poster to
avoid taking attention away from the more important features e.g. MovieTitle and Main picture (main
characters or an action still such as a battle or dance number).
-Making the poster suit the genre by adding a filter to make the character seem hand drawn to let the
consumer know that it is a superhero movie due to it having connotations of comic books (also the fact that
they are dressed in superhero outfits might help!).
-A catch phrase or tagline for the movie located close to the main title. Usually a small hint towards the film
plot or a significant line of one of the characters that is reflective of the narrative. An example can be seen
on the poster for Kick Ass (a film in which my trailer is heavily influenced) “I can’t see through walls, but I
can kick your ass!” referencing the fact that the characters in the film are just regular people who have no
superpower showing that anyone could be a superhero.
4. MAGAZINE COVER.
• The magazine cover’s purpose is not just to advertise my production but to
also draw the reader in through the advertisement of other films therefor
expanding the reach of the products audience.
• The use of a similar main picture on the front cover to the poster gives a
sense of continuity between my advanced portfolio and allows my intended
target audience to recognize what the article (or poster) is advertising.
• I have included features on my cover that are usually expected to be found
on the front page of any magazine including price(US and UK), issue
number, date of publishing, a two way interactivity between the writers of
the magazine and the consumer (prizes and survey’s) and what is included
inside such as reviews, news and articles about upcoming films.
