Project proposal title and date:
Fanzine FMP
Main area of activity:
I will work mostly with art and illustration from the side of graphic novel(s), manga etc…
Rationale: 150 words approx.
I have made a variety of different products over the past years I’ve spent at York College. One of the
projects that comes to mind is when I recently created a Fanzine based around books and film and
how their adaptations differ from the original source material. I didn’t find this to be a difficult project but
because of technical difficulties I had to re-do a large majority of my work meaning that I went behind
everyone else and that my work didn’t look as good as I would’ve wanted it to. Because of this, when I
create yet another fanzine for my FMP, I will be able to take what went well and what went wrong with
my last project and make it better. I think that having this experience with this kind of project before will
help me to create a better product that I will be more pleased with. Since I’m already also used to using
software such as Photoshop I wouldn’t have to waste time getting used to the software. What inspired
me to think of this idea and decide to use it as my final project is my interest in art and illustration,
particularly from other countries. An example of this being manga that primarily comes from Japan. I’ve
always liked the art styles that were used (e.g. Aka Akasaka’s simplistic art style and bright colour
scheme for a rom-com manga) used and the storylines that were presented.
There are also similar types of styles of manga that I’ve found recently. One of those being manhwa, a
Korean style of illustration. I found this on an app called WebToon, where I was able to find a variety of
different stories and art styles from artists I had never heard of (WebToon is an app for up-and-coming
artists where they can publish their work for people to read). Because of my interest in these I was able
to find other forms of publishing works such as magazines (that are only available in Japan) where
people can publish their works to be read by the general public. These stories are then later on
published into actual manga volumes that are then sold separately,
I found this interesting and made me want to make my own form of magazine. However I don’t just
want to replicate one of those magazines, primarily because I’m not very good at drawing myself, but
instead go into detail about various manga’s (that are either popular or some that aren’t as popular)
and talk about the different art styles. I even want to talk about the storylines as well as how these
particular series’ came to be so popular or why some aren’t as popular.
It may not be something that everything can like and appeal to but it’s something that I’m passionate
about and like. It’s something that I want to try and if it doesn’t work as well as I would hope it to during
my experiments, I can learn from my mistakes and create a good product that I’m proud of.
Project Concept: 200 words approx.
The concept of my project is to create a fanzine based around the art of illustration, mainly looking at
art such as manga and mangwa since it’s something I’m familiar with and enjoy. I think that this is a
good kind of product to make because of how unique the premise is. I think this because, from the
research I have done into peoples previous works at York College, it seems like it’s not a kind of
spoken about subject when it comes to art and illustration. I think that having a more unique idea will
help me product stand out a lot more. If I were to make a fanzine centred on these ideas then I must
make sure that I also do the appropriate research. This being making sure I fact check all of my work
so that if I were to ever state something in my product I would want to make sure what I was saying
was the truth and not something that was edited on a site (e,g. Wikipedia). This is the same for any
form of research I do for my project. As stated previously, the reason why I want to make this is
because it’s something that I myself am interested. It may not be something that all people enjoy and

would want to read (e.g. I know that there are a lot of people who aren’t particularly interested in
manga and manhwa) however I know for a fact that there is a community that would be interested in
my kind of product idea.
I want to make this product to show that there is more to these kinds of products (manga and manhwa)
aside from just the ‘judging from the front cover’ stereotype. What I mean by this is that I’ve seen a lot
of people (on YouTube or other social media platforms such as Twitter) that talk about these kinds of
products and review them solely based on the front cover and the synopsis on the back. This can be
said for people who also read books in our country and do the same. I prefer to look into the book
before hand to see if it’s something I would enjoy. I understand that a lot of people wouldn’t want to do
that much with just one series but even just reading a page or so of the first volume can tell you a lot.
This fanzine is to show people how interesting manga and manhwa can be aside from being just
described as just ‘illustration’ and ‘pictures’.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed: 150 words approx.
I plan to evaluate my work by going through each of my PowerPoint’s and seeing what I had done
correctly e.g. seeing how much detail I had done into such as during my Research and/or any other
kind of work that allows me to go into extensive detail. When it comes to create my experiments I
would also want to make sure that I also evaluate them properly, making sure I go into detail and what
went right and what went wrong as well as what I liked and disliked. I would also do this with my final
product, also making sure to constantly make notes about my process of creation as well as talking
what I did and why I chose to do it.

Week Tasks to be Completed: Specific Tasks
1 Pre-production Proposal and background research
(I will look into a three or more series’ that I will more than likely
talk about in my fanzine in the future.
I will do research into these series’ and talk about their art styles
as well as the artists themselves e.g. how they go about creating
their products and the different techniques they use.)
(I will also do a pre-proposal and proposal about my fanzine and
what I plan to create and talk about why I want to make it, how I
will make it and what inspires me.)

2 Pre-production Research- primary and secondary
(I will do research into different products, similar to what I did with
my contextual research however I will go into more detail about
the different styles and colours used)
(I will also conduct a survey that is aimed toward my audience in
order to get a look into audience as a whole. This will also allow
me to see what my audience would want to see in my product as
well as what they like and dislike).
(I will then look into a secondary audience and talk about the
reasons behind my project and talk about various other kinds of
research I can look into).
(Finally I will conduct interviews to really get an idea at my
audience and ask them detailed questions that will help my
project. This will also allow them to go into detail.)
3 Pre-production Research- primary and secondary
(The same as said previously.)
4 Pre-production Experiments
(I will conduct experiments to get an idea as to what will work well
and what won’t work as well. This will give me an idea as to how I
can go about creating my project.)
(It also means that there will be a lot of trial and error. This means
that I can also experiment with a range of different software to get
a good idea as to what will be the most helpful).
5 Pre-production Experiments
