14. Comparison
• ESPN reigns supreme!
• Due to multiple of reasons
• ESPN sports analysts like Adam Scheffler, Chris
Broussard, and Chris Berman are followed much
more closely than Yahoos!
• ESPN is sports only, unlike Yahoo who deals
with mail, finance, and sports.
15. Social Media Stats
• April 2013 Most Viewed Social Media Websites
• According to eBiz.com
• Facebook - 750,000,000
• Twitter - 250,000,000
• LinkedIn – 110,000,000
16. Twitter vs. Facebook
• Just like the numbers for ESPN and Yahoo
showed Twitter has become a much bigger thing
for sports enthusiasts.
17. Twitter
• Twitter has become not only a fab for celebrities
such as musician Justin Bieber who as of today
has over 35 million followers, but it also has
made a huge name among athletes. From stars
like LeBron James to small named players still
trying to make a name like Royce White. Having
millions of followers has become a common
theme.
18. Twitter
• Twitter has made it possible to for not only fans
to read the thoughts of what players are
thinking on a day to day or even minute to
minute basis, but it has even made it possible for
fans to possibly even have a conversation with
players even if it is only 140 characters long.
19. Social Media and the NBA
• NBA Star Kobe Bryant had been one of the few
GIANT names in sports to not have a twitter
account but that all changed on January 4 when
it was confirmed that he had made an
account. Within the first 75 minutes of his
account he had not gained an amazing 75,000
followers but he had done so with out even
making a tweet.
20. Social Media and the NBA
• After Kobe Bryant’s First tweet, not only did
Twitter go nuts but so did ESPN publishing a
story on live SportsCenter about him joining
Twitter.
21. Social Media and the NBA
• Fallowing his first tweet his fallowing grew
fastest ever (for an athlete), as in the next 14
hours he managed to gain an additional 250,000
followers. His tweet also created a new
hashtag #mambatweets which has been used
countless times today.
22. Social Media and the NBA
• Since then Kobe as also managed a couple more
tweets that have resulted in ESPN air time. For
example..
23. Social Media and the NBA
• This very tweet resulted in days of sports talk on
radio channels and on national television.
• Without Twitter the fans would have never been
able to see the relationship among these players.
24. Social Media and it’s Negatives
• As great as Social Media is it isn't always a good.
• Hacks
• Tweets made in the heat of the moment
• Twitter arguments among fans and other players
26. Social Media and it’s Negatives
• Later Stephan Jackson would apologize.
• "I apologize to Serge Ibaka, the NBA, and to all my fans for the comments
I made," Jackson tweeted. "It was unprofessional and childish. I'm not a
thug just a man who speaks his mind. It was not appropriate. I do
apologize. Only a man can admit when he's wrong."
27. Social Media
• Social Media for the world of sports is only
going to get bigger.
• As Sporting News websites get more efficient
and more focused at using them for Marketing
both Twitter and Facebook are only going to see
an increase.
28. Social Media
• Today I would say Facebook has more room to
grow to grab the sports community.
• But with that said Twitter although it dominates
the sporting communities market share it does a
terrible job marketing to grab the ones who
already are not Twitter members.
29. Social Media
• In the future I see Facebook managing to grab a
small chunk of Twitters sports followers just
because Facebooks ability to market instantly in
front of the eyes of millions more than Twitter.
• Also in the future I see Twitter doing (what
Facebook is already doing now) which is place
promotional tweets on everyones Twitter feed.
30. THE END
• I hope everyone enjoyed this presentation, and I
hope I did this the way it was required.
• Thanks
