Abstract
Biodiesel is the name of a clean burning methanol (mono-alkyl) ester- or
ethanol ester based fuel made from vegetable or animal fats. Biodiesel can be
blended with petro- diesel in any relation. It can be used in diesel engines without
modification. Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially
free of sulphur and aromatics. The use of biodiesel in a conventional diesel engine
results in substantial reduction of unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and
particulate matter. The exhaust emissions of sulfur oxides and sulfates (major
components of acid rain) from biodiesel are essentially smaller compared to
petrodiesel. Scientific research confirms that biodiesel exhaust has a less harmful
impact on human health than petroleum diesel fuel.

Introduction
Design engineering is an initiative taken by Gujarat Technology University
in this direction with the help and guidance of the professors of IITs and the GTU
Innovation Council we are looking ahead in moving on the path of innovation. so
now let’s understand, what is design engineering..?
Design is a plan of a system, its implementation and utilization for attaining
a goal. It is to change undesired situation into desired situation means to find
solution for undesired/uncomfortable situation. ... Designing means evolving goal
oriented processes.
Design Thinking is a methodology used by designers to solve complex
problems, and find desirable solutions for clients. A design mindset is not problem-
focused; its solution focused and action oriented towards creating a preferred
future. Design thinking draws upon logic, imagination, intuition, and systemic
reasoning, to explore possibilities of what could be—and to create desired
outcomes that benefit the end user.
“Design-thinking firms stand apart in their willingness to engage in the task of
continuously redesigning their business…to create advances in both innovation and
efficiency—the combination that produces the most powerful competitive edge.”
A skill that allows a Designer to align what people want with what can be
done, And produce a viable business strategy that creates customer value and
Market opportunity.

ABOUT PROJECT
AIM:PRODUCTION OF BIODIESEL FROM KUSUM OIL
DOMAIN: INDUSTRIES, LABORATARY
APPLICATION: MOTOR FUEL(DIESEL ENGINES), FUEL ADDITIVE /
BIOCOMPONENT, UNDERGROUND MINING, OIL SPILLAGE
REMEDIATION.
We made a design for our project and also collecting material for our project
to near by shops preparing for canvas and also making prototype as well as report
to submit to our guide Prof. N.R.VAGHELA sir.
Then we selected a date to make canvases. We were going to make
canvases. At our group member house reached and started preparing canvases.
All the group member first discuss that what we were going to make. Than
our ideas were plotted on canvases.
While we were making canvases, we also do other activities like do gossip,
fun, listening music and also create some funny memorable and enjoyable and
interesting memories while we were preparing our project work.

10. 10
AEIOU Canvas
By using these all observation we have to make the AEIOU canvas. This
is a basic canvas for our Project or Problem. This canvas has all basic
information about users, activities, environment etc. which will helpful
for us ahead.
11. 11
EMPATHY CANVAS
Understanding the problem of society is one of the biggest
challenges for engineering student as till now they were making project
on imaginary ideas. So this was based on understanding the domains of
the problem in broader sense which emphasized on interacting with the
people of your domain area which included more of casual talk rather
than technical session. And this activity was named as Story boarding
canvassing.
Our domain was Industries, Laboratory, etc., We started with
identify the people related to our domain directly and indirectly. Then
list out the activities which are required for Biodiesel. As we need to
focus on people’s emotions we wrote Happy and Sad Story which helps
us to get more attached with user.
1)USERS:
People in diesel engines
Railway usage
Aircraft use
Generating electricity
2)STAKEHOLDERS:
Engineer
Research industries
Universities
Biofuel Producers
Knaturals
3)ACTIVITIES:
Methanol-oil-catalyst Mixing
Blending
Heating mixture
Transesterification
Cooling
Taking in separating funnel
Separate biodiesel
12. 12
Also, We includes happy and sad story boarding.
Happy :-
Biodiesel is eco-friendly.
Provides a domestic and renewable energy supply.
Biodiesel can be use directly in CI engine with no substantial modification of the
engine.
Blending of biodiesel with diesel fuel increases engine efficiency.
The higher flash point of biodiesel makes its storage safer.
Biodiesel degrades four times faster than diesel.
Good lubricating property
Sad :-
Low availability due to less production of Kusum plant in India.
Biodiesel is less sustainable for use in low temp than petrol and diesel.
Slight Increase in Nitrogen Oxide(NoX) Emissions: Biodiesel has about 10%
higher NoX than other petroleum products.
Biodiesel fuel can be harm rubber hoses in some engines.
Industrial pollution: The Carbon footprint of biofuels is less than the traditional
forms of fuel when burnt.
14. 14
IDEATION CANVAS
From the user canvas, you have an idea what are the people? In ideation canvas,
you have to carry out which type of activities is related to your project and people?
What is situation and location regarding to activities? Then after you find the
possible solutions. It is depend or not depend to your activities.
1)People:
Engineer
Drivers
Industries Workers
In Company to generate electricity
2)ACTIVITIES:
Methanol-oil-catalyst Mixing
Blending
Heating mixture
Transesterification
Cooling
Taking in separating funnel
Separate biodiesel
3) PROPS / TOOLS/OBJECT/EQUIPMENT:
Oil, Methanol, Catalyst(KOH,NaOH)
Separator, Mixture etc.
Heater
Transesterification vessel
Filter
Settling tank
4) Context/Location/Situation :
Then thought for context/location/situation and finally for possible solutions. We
conclude that people’s emotions when using an interactive system do not only
influence the current interaction itself.
1. Buyer are consulting about their comforts with consultant.
2. All the facilities and amenities are providing to the customer.
Biodiesel Production in Industries, Laboratory etc.
Biodiesel reaction mix is kept just above the boiling point of the alcohol
(around 50-60◦C) to speed up the reaction and the reaction takes place.
15. 15
Recommended reaction time 24 hours, and some systems recommend the
reaction take place at room temperature.
16. 16
Product Development Canvas
This canvas is development of the product. From possible solutions, you have idea
about what is product? Our product is “Biodiesel”. So in this canvas, following
things is to do.
1)Purpose:

8) Reject/Redesign/Retain:
Fit at Proper Place
biodiesel can be produced from straight vegetable oil, animal oil/fats, tallow and
waste oils.
Almost all biodiesel is produced using base catalyzed transesterification as it is
the most economical process requiring only low temperatures and pressures and
producing a 98% conversion yield.
The Transesterification process is the reaction of a triglyceride (fat/oil) with an
alcohol to form esters and glycerol.

MIND MAPPING
A mind map is a graphical way to represent ideas and concepts. It is a visual
thinking tool that helps structuring information, helping you to better analyze,
comprehend, synthesize, recall and generate new ideas. Mind mapping is a simple
technique for drawing information in diagrams, instead of writing it in sentences.
20. 20
CONCLUSION
In Design Engineering 2A Empathy Mapping, ideation and product
development canvases are completed. AEIOU, Mind Mapping chart are also
completed. With the help of these charts and canvases the basic knowledge about
the project is defined.
