Framing objects
1. MINDFULNESS PRACTICE THROUGH FRAMING OBJECTS
WITH THUMBS AND EYES ON THE AIR WHILE DEEP
BREATHING.
GOALS:
Full concentrating activity within emotional education.
Objectives:
1. To focus the mind and body attention at the present moment and to
enjoy it, by taking advantage of it as much as possible.
2. To promote self control trough imaginative framing of objects in a
guided way, while relaxing and breathing deeply.
3. To disconnect from a previous activity, normally stressing or
physically exciting, such as Physical Education class, an exam or a test,
a rainy day without playground time, sports games at break times,
etcetera.
4. To increase, step by step and through practice, the attention skill, in
order to improve the creative way for problem resolution. That is
essential for keeping the explicit memory active, which will help to
develope the selective attention for school and for making study time
more efficient.
5. To be able to reach the aims, in the most natural way possible, by
framing real objects or shapes through guided instructions, following
a kinesthetic- visual and auditory pattern.
6. To show respect when doing the relaxing and breathing exercises,
as well as the framing with the thumbs and sight activities.
7. To accept different ways to do the mindfulness activities
depending on the characteristics of each partner .
DESCRIPTION:
✳ Step one: All students come into class from the previous period and
the teacher asks them to sit down on their chairs and to put the backs
straight and the hands on the table in a relaxed way. Arms must be
relaxed and they must sit down straight but comfortably and then close
their eyes for a few moments.
2. ✳ Step two: Everybody is going to listen to a sound with some echo,
a gong or similar, to start the activity. When the sound finishes, all the
students will put their right thumb up and listen to the teacher to follow
the instructions.
Then they will open their eyes carefully.
✳ Step three: The teacher will say, softly and slowly, what shapes or
real objects in the class the students must frame with their right thumb.
One by one, the objects will be shaped by drawing with the thumb on
the air and, at the same time, the sight of each student must be on the
thumb, following the shape as well as the thumb simultaneously.
Meanwhile, everybody is consciousness breathing, slowly and
carefully, as the teacher will remind.
✳ Step four: the sound of the gong or instrument with echo will be
listened again to stop the right thumb part. When the repercussion
finishes, is the left thumb turn to raise and frame the shapes or real
objects, that teacher will say softly and slowly. All the students must
follow the auditory instructions again while they look at their left
thumb, visually, and they draw on the air the frames, kinesthetic.
✳ Step five: The gong will sound a last time for marking the end of
the activity. When the repercussion finishes, both thumbs must be up
and frame in the air a last shape that the teacher will say. The last shape
will be a big one. Something real in the class, easy to recognise, such
as a rectangle, from a board for example, or a circle, from a clock , or
a square, from a window...
✳ Final step: to end the practice, everybody must recover the position
from the beginning of the whole activity and listen again to the gong
sound , or similar, and wait until the echo finishes.
During all the mindfulness practice, everybody is consciousness
breathing, slowly and carefully, as the teacher will remind before
starting and later again.
