1.0 INTRODUCTION
MEANING OF OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE (OS)
Open-source software (OSS) is computer software with its source code made available with a
license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change, and distribute the
software to anyone and for any purpose.
MEANING OF HARDWARE
A computer's hardware consists of the physical components necessary to operateand interact
with a computer. Since a computer's primary language is binary, devices are necessary to
convert our input into that language. The binary codecoming out of the computer must also be
translated into something usable for theoperator.
MEANING OF SOFTWARE
Software can be difficult to describe because it is "virtual," or not physical like
computer hardware. Instead, software consists of lines of code written by computer
programmers that have been compiled into a computer program. Software programs are stored
as binary data that is copied to a computer's hard drive, when it is installed. Since software is
virtual and does not take up any physical space, it is much easier (and often cheaper) to
upgrade than computer hardware.
2.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM (OS)
2.1 MEANING OF OPEN SOURCE OS
Open Source Operating System is the most important program that runs ona computer that is
free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute itin modified or unmodified
forms. Every general-purpose computer must have anoperating system to run other programs.
Operating systems perform basic tasks, suchas recognizing input from the keyboard, sending
output to the display screen, keepingtrack of files and directories on the disk, and controlling
peripheral devices suchas disk drives and printers.

2.2 EXAMPLE OF OPEN SOURCE OS
Linux kernel
The Linux kernel is a prominent example of free and open source software. Linux wasn't the
first open source software project, but it was the powerful community developed by
contributors worldwide. The Linux kernel is used by a variety of operating systems based on
it, which are usually in the form of Linux distributions. The popularity of Linux Kernel
rapidly accumulated developers and users who adopted code from other free software projects
for use with the new operating system.
Ubuntu
A user friendly operating system based on KDE, the K desktop Environment. With a
predictable 6 month release cycle and part of the Ubuntu project, Kubuntuis the GNU/Linux
distribution for everyone. Improved desktop updated applications and increased usability
features are just a few of the surprises withthis latest release.

3.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE
3.1 MEANING OF OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE
Open source software is software with source code that anyone can inspect, modify, and
enhance. "Source code" is the part of software that most computer users don't ever see; it's the
code computer programmers can manipulate to change how a piece of software "program" or
"application".
3.2 EXAMPLE OF OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE
A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and
traversinginformation resources on the World Wide Web. An information resourceisidentified
by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and may be a web page, image, video, or other piece
of content.Hyperlinks present in resources enable userseasily to navigate their browsers to
related resources. The major web browsersare Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google
Chrome, Apple Safari, and Opera.
SPREADSHEET
5. 4
A spreadsheet is a computer application that simulates a paper, accounting worksheet. It
displays multiple cells usually in a two-dimensional matrix or grid consisting of rows
andcolumns. Each cell contains alphanumeric text, numeric values or formulas. A formula
defineshow the content of that cell is to be calculated from the contents of any other cell (or
combination of cells) each time any cell is updated.

5.0 PERVASIVE COMPUTING
5.1 MEANING OF PERVASIVE COMPUTING
Pervasive computing is an emerging trend associated with embedding microprocessors in day-
to-day objects, allowing them to communicate information. It is also known as ubiquitous
computing. The terms ubiquitous and pervasive signify "existing everywhere."
5.2 EXAMPLE OF PERVASIVE COMPUTING
GPS
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based global navigation satellitesystem
(GNSS) that provides location and time information in all weather, anywhere on or nearthe
Earth, where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. It
ismaintained by the United States government and is freely accessible by anyone with a
GPSreceiver. The GPS project was developed in 1973 to overcome the limitations of
previousnavigation systems, integrating ideas from several predecessors, including a number
of classifiedengineering design studies from the 1960s. GPS was created and realized by the
U.S.Department of Defense (USDOD) and was originally run with 24 satellites. It became
fullyoperational in 1994.

SMART TV
Smart TV, which is also sometimes referred to as "Connected TV" or "Hybrid TV", is the
phrase used to describe the current trend of integration of the internet and Web 2.0 features
into modern television sets and set-top boxes, as well as the technological convergence
between computers and these television sets /set-top boxes. The technology that enables Smart
TVs is not only incorporated into television sets, but also devices such as set-top boxes, Blu-
ray players, game consoles, and other companion devices. These devices allow viewers to
search and find videos, movies, photos and other content on the web, on a local cable TV
channel, on a satellite TV channel, or stored on a local hard drive.
6.0 CONCLUSION
Open Source can be used by anyone and because it has no copyright claims, so usersare free
touse, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified orunmodified
forms. Pervasive Computing is to make our lives easier because we can interact with
computers.Besides that, we can easily give the computer commands and the computer will
grant your wish.
