2. 1.0 INTRODUCTION
Meaning Of Open Source Software ( OSS )
Open source software (OSS) is defined as computer software for which the source code and
certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders areprovided under a software
license that meets the Open Source Definition or that is inthe public domain. This permits
users to use, change, and improve the software, andto redistribute it in modified or
unmodified forms.
Meaning Of Hardware
A computer's hardware consists of the physical components necessary to operate and interact
with a computer. Since a computer's primary language is binary, devices are necessary to
convert our input into that language. The binary code coming out of the computer must also
be translated into something usable for the operator.
Meaning Of Software
Organized information in the form of operating systems, utilities, programs, and applications
that enable computers to work.Software consists of carefully-organized instructions and code
written by programmers in any of various special computer languages. Software is divided
commonly into two main categories:
System software - Software that is used to control and manage computer devices and
operations.
Application software - Software that is used to help a user perform a task and solve a
problem.
3. 2.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE OPERATINGSYSTEM (OS)
2.1 Meaning of open source OS
Open source operating system refers to a program in which the source code is available to the
general public for use and/or modification from its original design free of charge and a set of
programs containing instructions that coordinate all the activities among computer hardwar
resources.
2.2 Examples of open source OS
a) Chrome OS (22 September 2014)
Chrome OS is an operating system based on the Linux kernel and designed by
Google to work with web applications and installed applications. Initially, Chrome
OS was almost a pure web thin client operating system, with only a handful of
"native" applications, but Google gradually began encouraging developers to
create "packaged applications", some of which can work offline. In 2014, Google
upgraded its Play Store standards for packaged apps, requiring that these
applications work offline. Around the same time, Google also announced that
Chrome OS would gain the ability to run Android apps natively, by late 2014. In
September 2014, App Runtime for Chrome (beta) was launched together with four
Android apps being able to run on Chrome OS.
Chrome OS is built upon the open source project called Chromium OSwhich,
unlike Chrome OS, can be compiled from the downloaded source code. Chrome
OS is the commercial version installed on specific hardware from Google's
manufacturing partners.[9] The launch date for retail hardware featuring Chrome
OS was delayed from late 2010 to June 15, 2011, when "Chromebooks" from
Samsung, and then Acer shipped in July
4. b) IOS 8 ( 17 September 2014 )
iOS 8 is the eighth major release of the iOS mobile operating system designed by
Apple Inc. as the successor to iOS 7. It was announced at the company's
Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2014 on June 2, 2014, and was
released on September 17, 2014.A new app named Health and a corresponding
framework named HealthKit became available with the release.Upon the release,
Siri was updated to support hands-free activation and music identification using
Shazam.Voice and video messages are automatically deleted unless the user saves
them for future reference. Interactive notifications let the user respond to texts
without leaving the app they are currently using.Five days after release, iOS 8 had
been installed on 46% of Apple devices.
5. 3.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION
SOFTWARE
3.1 Meaning of open source application software.
Open source application software refers to a program in which the source code is available to
the general public for use and/or modification from its original design free of charge and a
computer program or a suite of compute programs that performs a particular functions for the
user. Application software includes all programs that perform specific task.
3.2 Example of open sources application software.
a) Ccleaner (26 August 2014 )
CCleaner (also known as Crap Cleaner), developed by Piriform, is a utility program used to
clean potentially unwanted files (including temporary internet files, where malicious
programs and code tend to reside) and invalid Windows Registry entries from a computer.A
public version 1.01 for Mac OS X has been released along with a Network Edition. Its
technology includes the ability to defrag the drives and access the system information in the
online service "Agomo", developed by Piriform.
6. b) VLC MEDIA PLAYER ( 5 September 2014 )
VLC media player (commonly known as VLC) is a portable, free and open-source, cross-
platform media player and streaming media server written by the VideoLAN project.
VLC media player supports many audio and video compression methods and file formats,
including DVD-Video, video CD and streaming protocols. It is able to stream media over
computer networks and to transcode multimedia files.[8]
The default distribution of VLC includes a large number of free decoding and encoding
libraries, avoiding the need for finding/calibrating proprietary plugins. Many of VLC's codecs
are provided by the libavcodec library from the FFmpeg project, but it uses mainly its own
muxer and demuxers and its own protocols implementations. It also gained distinction as the
first player to support playback of encrypted DVDs on Linux and OS X by using the
libdvdcss DVD decryption library.
