Rule of thirds
1. RULE OF THIRDS
To advertise the BlackBerry Torch 9860, I created a billboard advert by
photographing the phone and editing the photos in Photoshop. I edited them by
cropping the image so the phone was central and I then used the magnetic lasso tool
to go around it; next I selected the phone (front and back) itself and placed it on a
billboard shaped document in Photoshop. When I created it I considered the rule of
thirds.
WHAT IS THE RULE OF THIRDS?
The rule of thirds is an image broken down into thirds so that there are 9 parts. To
use the rule of thirds to best effect you must consider the main points of interest and
where you are intentionally placing them. When you place information or images in
the intersections or along the lines, the idea is that the viewer can interact with it
more naturally. The phone on the billboard advert I created is placed considerably off
centre and creates an additional point of interest.
WHY IS IT USED IN ADVERTISING?
Considering the rule of thirds when taking a photograph or when designing
something such as a billboard advert makes something look more interesting and
dynamic. It also highlights the important parts of the image and creates a sense of
balance.A typical audience would read an advert from left to right and therefore many
billboard adverts have the names of the product/film they are advertising on the left
hand side. This is because instantly the audience would see the name and then they
would look at the image alongside the text – this is ideal when advertising a product.
