If all of the world´s cultural heritage (sports, music, fashion, architecture, literature, painting, etc..) was contained in a time capsule, what would you include to demonstrate the legacy of Brazil?
2. TIME CAPSULE
Proposition: Put in a time capsule items that represent the
legacy of your country
• Metodology:
My first step to create this time capsule was to look for items that marked my
life and my relationship with my country. Moreover I thought, what best represent
my country.
• Country: Brazil
3. TIME CAPSULE
Literature
Memórias
Póstumas
de Brás Cubas
Item: Book “Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas”
Author: Machado de Assis
Why: “It is simple the best book I've ever read”.
Machado de Assis is definitely the Brazilian best
author, and one of the world’s best author. This
book marks the apex of his carreer.
Item: Book “Nosso Lar”
Author: André Luiz by Francisco Cândido Xavier
Why: Francisco Xavier was a popular medium and
philanthropist of Brazil's spiritism movement. He
wrote most of his 450 books using a process known as
"psychography“ and influenced the faith of thousands
of Brazilians. “Nosso Lar” is, from my point of view, his
best selling book.
4. TIME CAPSULE
Language
Item: Dictionary
Why: Portuguese is the official language of only 7 countries (Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde,
Guinea-Bissau, and São Tomé and Príncipe). So, we don´t know how it will be in future. Thus, I will put in my time
capsule a dicitionary Portuguese – English – Spanish to help future researchers to understand our legacy.
5. TIME CAPSULE
Music
Item: CD “20 Grandes Sucessos de Tom Jobim”
Author: Antônio Carlos Jobim
Why: “His music touches our soul”. Tom Jobim was a Brazilian songwriter, composer, arranger, singer, and
pianist/guitarist. He was a primary force behind the creation of the “Bossa nova” style, and his songs have
been performed by many singers and instrumentalists within Brazil and internationally. "Garota de
Ipanema" (The Girl from Ipanema) is one of the most recorded songs of all time.

6. TIME CAPSULE
The nature
Item: Brazilian seeds
Why: Brazil has one of the most diverse and incredible flora in the world. Many of the country plants are rich in
nutrients and have medicinal characteristics still unknown. Preserve some of this genetic material is essential
for the future.
7. TIME CAPSULE
Food
Item: Brazilian Feijoada recipe
Author: Unknown
Why: Feijoada is a stew of black beans with beef
and pork and a typical Brazilian dish. The most
widespread popular explanation of the origin of
Feijoada is that farmers supplied slaves with the
"remains" of pigs. The cooking of these
ingredients, with beans and water, became the
Brazilian Feijoada. It is not known if this story is
true or just a legend, but Feijoada is surely
delicious.
Ingredients
2 cups dried black beans
4 applewood-smoked bacon slices
1 (1-pound) boneless pork shoulder (Boston butt), trimmed and cut into 1/2-
inch cubes
3/4 teaspoon salt, divided
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided
3 bone-in beef short ribs, trimmed (about 2 pounds)
3 cups finely chopped onion (about 2 medium)
1 1/4 cups fat-free, lower-sodium chicken broth
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 (9-ounce) smoked ham hock
1 tablespoon white vinegar
8 orange wedges
Preparation
1. Place black beans in a small saucepan; cover with cold water. Bring to a boil;
cook beans for 2 minutes. Remove from heat; cover and let stand 1 hour.
Drain beans.
2. Cook bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon
from pan; crumble. Sprinkle pork evenly with 1/8 teaspoon salt and 1/4
teaspoon pepper. Increase heat to medium-high. Add pork to drippings in
skillet; sauté 8 minutes, turning to brown on all sides. Transfer pork to a 6-
quart electric slow cooker. Sprinkle ribs evenly with 1/8 teaspoon salt and
remaining 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Add ribs to skillet; cook 3 minutes on each
side or until browned. Place ribs in slow cooker. Add drained beans,
remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, onion, and next 3 ingredients (through ham
hock) to slow cooker, stirring to combine. Cover and cook on LOW 8 hours
or until beans and meat are tender.
3. Remove ribs from slow cooker; let stand 15 minutes. Remove meat from
bones; shred meat with 2 forks. Discard bones. Discard ham hock. Return
beef to slow cooker. Stir in vinegar and crumbled bacon. Serve with orange
wedges.
8. TIME CAPSULE
Regional Culture
Chimarrão Capoeira Indigenous Celebretion
Carnaval Festa Junina Frevo
Forró
Bumba Meu Boi
Item: Traditional regional parties (Photos and videos)
Why: Brazil is a continental country. People who live in a region of the country has culture, customs and
traditions completely different from those who live elsewhere in the country. Faced with such diversity nothing
more natural than preserve it in the Time Capsule at least a little of each region. So, I will put in the capsule some
videos and photos relating the major regional events and traditions in the country.
9. TIME CAPSULE
Religion
Item: Umbanda (videos, photos, explanations and principles)
Why: Umbanda is the biggest religion the was created in Brazil. It is a syncretic Brazilian religion that blends
African traditions with Roman Catholicism, Spiritism, and Indigenous American beliefs. Some beliefs are the
existence of a single, supreme creator god known as Olodumare. Other beliefs are the existence of deities
called Orixás, most of them syncretized with Catholic saints that act as divine energy and forces of nature;
spirits of deceased people that counsel and guide practitioners through troubles in the material world; psychics,
or mediums, who have a natural ability that can be perfected to bring messages from the spiritual world of
Orixás and the guiding spirits; reincarnation and spiritual evolution through many material lives (karmic law)
and the practice of charity and social fraternity.

10. TIME CAPSULE
Movies
Item: A Dog's Will “O auto da compadecida”
Author: Guel Arraes
Why: The lively João Grilo and the sly Chicó are
poor guys living in the hinterland who cheat a
bunch of people in a small Northeast Brazil town.
But when they die, they have to be judged by
Christ, the Devil and the Virgin Mary, before they
are admitted to paradise. A comedy that shows a
lot about Brazilian northeast faith, culture and
lifestyle. Click to watch the trailler in portugues e
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kJ76JDCRHs
Item: Elite Squad “Tropa de Elite”
Director: José Padilha
Why: In 1997, Captain Nascimento from BOPE (Special
Police Operation Battalion) is a honest cop that has to
face drug dealers and criminals while he looks for a
substitute. However, the police is full of corruption,
lack of competence and stupid bureaucracy. It is an
action movie that shows a sad reality about one of the
most beautiful cities in Brazil. Click to watch the trailler

11. TIME CAPSULE
Passion
Item: Football (Videos and photos)
Why: It´s used to say that football was born in England, but was in Brazil that it found its home. The Brazilians
are simply in love with the sport, portray the country and not talk about soccer and our players is to omit an
essential part of our history The country stop to watch a game, so my “time capsule” needs to have videos and
pictures of our players. To see the ten most beautiful goals of Pelé , click the link:

12. TIME CAPSULE
Architecture
Item: Brasília (Photos and projects)
Auhtor: Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer
Why: Brasília is the federal capital of Brazil. The city is located along the Brazilian Highlands in the country's
Central-West region and was founded in 1960, to serve as the new national capital. Brasília was planned by Lúcio
Costa and designed by the most famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. Brasília was chosen as a UNESCO
World Heritage Site due to its modernist architecture.
13. TIME CAPSULE
Indian Culture
Item: Indigenous handicrafts
Why: Preserve a whole culture in a Time Capsule is impossible. But the Indigenous people in Brazil (the Native
Brazilians) are so complex and culturally rich that I would preserve some of their handicrafts. For the future.
