  • BiODX - Antimicrobial Technology Presentation

    1. 1. Who We Are? An industrial biotech company situated in the CSIR Mining Innovation Centre, with over 6 years already dedicated to R&D in conjunction with the Council for Science and Industrial Research (CSIR) to develop sustainable biocides. Based on the development of DECONT-X, a mild organic biocidal active ingredient, BiODX products have gained popularity due to its non-corrosive properties and nontoxicity surrounding microbial decontamination. 2. 2. The Technology • BiODX’s research was based upon a principal which assumed that triggering an action on sensory parameters of citrus would yield high dosages of biological yield from the target gene. • BiODX’s innovative processes use the natural enzyme reaction occurring from the time of picking the fruit, where degradation of the antimicrobial component starts as the fruit converts all resources (sugars, bioflavonoids, antimicrobials etc.) in order to stay alive. • Innovation is also seen in the formation of two active compounds that do not exist in the raw fruit; these two compounds are formed by virtue of the digestion process that converts citric acid and vitamins. • Formulating preservative into the juice is a stoichiometric reaction. With reference to the formation of vitamin C, a citrus oxidation-reduction system has electron donating and electron accepting properties. Copyright BiODX 2013 All Rights Reserved
    3. 3. Active Citrus Extract GC (gas chromatography) analysis identified active peak in citrus extract. Bioflavonoids which is a main component of citrus has previously been reported as having a growth inhibitory effect on bacteria such as colibacillus, Staphylococcus aureus or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. 4. 4. Stabilised Citrus Extract GC (gas chromatography) analysis of DECONT-X showing activity compounds and newly formed sub compounds post digestion. The reaction between the citrus extract and QAC is a stoichiometric reaction causing an ion exchange between the two compounds allowing the big molecule (citrus extract) to digest certain sugars and other elements into newly formed compounds. 5. 5. Regulatory Compliance Originating in response to pollution laws in the USA, organic chemists use all the tools and training of traditional chemistry to create non-hazardous chemicals and processes that are "benign by design". 7. 7. BiODX Products VS. Conventional Chemicals Bring innovation to your customers to have differentiation from competition. Conventional 60% Natural 80% Natural Chlorine, Heavy Metals, Solvents, Paracetic Acid, Caustic Soda, Aldehydes Pollution, effluent fines, corrosive, toxic waste, kills enzymes, damage to the environment Earth Friendly, biodegradable, non-corrosive, non-toxic, harmless to the environment Copyright BiODX 2013 All Rights Reserved
    8. 8. About the Product Properties of DECONT-X: • All South African • Earth friendly and fully biodegradable. • Bactericidal, fungicidal and virucidal. • Pleasant characteristic fragrance due to citrus content. • Has characteristic detergent properties. • Unaffected by ammonia & nitrates. • Not reactive with organic matter (no THM). • Fast kill kinetics on both sessile and planktonic bacteria. 10. 10. Compatibility, Solubility & Stability • DECONT-X is miscible with water and polar organic solvents. • Stable in acid and alkaline pH environments from pH 2 up to pH 11. • Compatible with a wide range of additives and auxiliary products including surfactants, flocculants, dispersants, corrosion inhibitors and other biocides. • In common with other non-oxidising biocides, strong reducing and oxidising agents should be avoided. • A potent antimicrobial with broad spectrum activity against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria, SRB’s, APB’s, anaerobes, yeasts and fungi. • Possible anion replacement for stabilization under acid condition. 11. 11. Product Performance The “intelligence” of DECONT-X kills 99.9 % of pathogenic micro-organisms & MIC’s (microbials influencing corrosion). • Escherichia coli sp. • Pseudomonas sp. • Staphylococcus sp. + Streptococcus sp. • Listeria sp. • Effective against legionella at as low as 30 ppm. • Black, green & brown moulds (Stachybotrys) • SRB’s, ARB’s & Anaerobes (MIC’s) • Remarkably effective against Pseudomonas, Stachybotrys and MIC’s. 15. 15. Markets for DECONT-X • Oil / Petroleum (fuel additive) • Fracking • Pulp / Paper Mill Industry • Water Treatment / Cooling Towers • Biofilm Control • Disinfectant Formulation • Preservation / Coatings / Paint • Printing Chemicals / Ink BiODX have positioned DECONT-X selectively in these markets where a sustainable biocide will have a competitive advantage due to end-user concerns related to the environment, product performance and toxicity. 16. 16. Toxicity & Corrosion Matrix Conventional chemicals as demonstrated pose harmful risks to the labour force promoting absenteeism and corrosive properties leads to equipment damage resulting in huge financial losses. 17. 17. Product Advantages One of many comparative examples of sustainable VS. conventional chemicals as applicable to cooling towers and there affect on water chemistry. DECONT-X CHLORINE Unaffected by ammonia & nitrates Affected by ammonia and nitrates Non-toxic, no health & safety concerns Major health & safety concerns pH Neutral Perceived as a protein/food - no resistance Affects water pH Bacterial strains can resist it Non-corrosive Highly corrosive Outstandingly effective against biofilm No efficacy against biofilm No reaction to organic matter Produces trihalomethanes / carcinogens Stand alone product Require extra chemicals Stable at 5°c to 112°c Unstable At 15-25 ppm (in water) is cheaper than chlorine Higher costs Copyright BiODX 2013 All Rights Reserved
    18. 18. Total Bacteria Control in Cooling Tower Water Microbial Load (cfu/cm2) The water sample was taken directly from a cooling tower that had undergone standard treatment of a two ton shock treatment of chlorine added every two weeks. The control did not get treated with any additional biocide during the 72 hours. - Control - DECONT-X Time in Hours Copyright BiODX 2013 All Rights Reserved
    19. 19. Bacterial Resistance Bacteria learn to acquire immunity to conventional chemicals, which means: • Stronger chemical concentrations • Increased chemical costs • Increased water / rinse costs • Increased electricity / heating costs • Increased process costs • Increased labour / absenteeism costs Bacteria do not identify DECONT-X as a poison and therefore do not imitate development of resistance.
