1. World Wetland Day - 02 February
On this day, in 1971, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of
International Importance was signed. The Ramsar Convention is an
international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.
Known as the Convention on Wetlands, named after the city of Ramsar in
Iran, where the Convention was signed in 1971.
A wetland is a land area saturated with water. The primary factor that
water bodies is the characteristic vegetation of aquatic plants, adapted to
the unique hydric soil.
Wetlands play a number of roles in the environment, principally
water purification, flood control, carbon sink and shoreline stability.
Wetlands are the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems.

3. 2. World Forest Day - 21 March
The World Forestry Day was established in the year 1971 at the 23rd
General Assembly of European Confederation of Agriculture. And it was
decided to be celebrated as an annual event celebration on 21st of March by
the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
Forests plays great role in gathering and releasing the water on the earth
and maintain the flora and fauna habitat balance. Forests are the natural
beauty on the earth which is very necessary to be conserved to go
everything in balance.

4. 3. World Water Day - 22 March
World Water Day is an annual event celebrated on March 22. The day
focuses attention on the importance of fresh water and advocates for the
sustainable management of freshwater resources.
This day formally proposed in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations
Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro.
In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated the first World
Water Day and since then, each year focuses on a different issue.

5. 4. Earth Day – 22 April
The idea for a national day to focus on the environment came to Earth
Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after
witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara,
California.
In 1970 a group of people in the United States of America got together to
draw the attention of the world to the problems being caused to the earth
due to modernisation.
While this April 22 Earth Day was focused on the United States, an
organisation launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national
coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organised events in 141
nations.

6. 5. International Biodiversity Day – 22 May
The International Day for Biological Diversity (or World
Biodiversity Day) is a United Nations–sanctioned international
day for the promotion of biodiversity issues. It is currently held
on May 22.

7. 6. World Environment Day - 05 June
On this day, in 1972, the Stockholm Conference on human
environment was held in Sweden.
There was a large gathering from all over the world and people
expressed their concerns for the increasing environmental problems.
The ‘World Environment Day (WED) is the United Nations’ most
important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for
the protection of our environment.
Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform
for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.

8. 7. World Ocean Day – 08 June
World Oceans Day takes place every 8 June. It has been celebrated
unofficially since its original proposal in 1992 by Canada's International
Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada
(OIC) at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and
Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
World Oceans Day is an annual observation to honor, help protect, and
conserve the world's oceans. The ocean provides us with many resources
and services including oxygen, climate regulation, food sources, medicine,
and more. World Oceans Day also provides an opportunity to take personal
and community action to conserve the ocean and its resources.

9. 8. World Population Day – 11 July
World Population day is an annual event, observed on July 11 every year,
which seeks to raise awareness of global population issues. The Governing
Council of the United Nations Development Programme established the
event in 1989.

10. 9. World Ozone Day - 16 September
The United Nations declared in 1994 this day as the ‘International Day
for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer’. It is the day the Montreal Protocol
was signed. The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone
Layer (a protocol to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone
Layer) is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by
phasing out the production of numerous substances that are responsible for
ozone depletion.

11. 10. Green Consumer Day – 28 September
The Green Consumer Day is celebrated globally on 28th September
every year and it highlights the problems of consumerism and its impact
on the environment. This is an area of major concern in today’s global
market orientated world. This day focuses primarily on awareness raising
and the importance of recycling-reusing and reducing waste material.
A green consumer is someone who is very concerned about the
environment and, therefore, only purchases products that are
environmentally-friendly or eco-friendly.
12. 11. World Habitat Day – 01 October
The earth is the habitat of not only human beings but also all living
creatures. Increasing human activities is threatening the habitat of other
living things. To highlight the fact World Habitat Day is observed every
year on the first Monday of October throughout the world. First
celebrated in 1986 by the United Nations.
13. 12. World Animal Welfare Day – 04 October
World Animal Day is an international day of action for animal
rights and welfare celebrated annually on October 4, the feast
day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
It started in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence,
Italy who wished to highlight the plight of endangered species.
14. 13. Wildlife Week - 02-08 October
In order to orient the common man towards the protection of wildlife,
the Indian Board of Wild Life (IBWL) decided to observe the Wildlife Week
and since then from October 2 – 8 every year organize different activities
related to wildlife conservation to commemorate this week. Wildlife Week
celebrated all over the country, offers to preserve fauna means the animal
life of the India.
