PREVIOUS POSITION
Senior Mechanical Engineer/Technologist and Controlled Title at GE Oil & Gas (UK Ltd)
Company Topside Hydraulic Unit Specialist and project engineer, primarily responsible for
the hydraulic control equipment used in the offshore Oil & Gas Industry, including:-
• Hydraulic Power Units (HPU) - including Production and Test & Flushing units
• Topside Umbilical Termination Units (TUTU)
• Subsea Chemical Injection Units (CIMV).
Usually mounted on an offshore oil rig or FPSO vessel, Hydraulic Power Units generate dual
low and high pressure supplies (up to 10,000 psi) required for the continual operation of
subsea installations, well-head control and emergency shut-down systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Category Team Unit Specialist is responsible to the Project Teams, from the initial bid
support, to the design, manufacture and delivery of each unit. It involves the interface
between Client and Supplier, generation of Functional Design Specifications from Customer
requirements; the management of sub-suppliers and verification of other 3rd party designs;
technically reviewing documents, calculations and drawings against the relevant Statutory
National and International, Industrial Standards and Company Regulations.
- The technical development of high pressure Hydraulic Power Units in support of
Subsea Control Systems (including Emergency Shut-Down systems) for the offshore Oil
and Gas industry world-wide.
- Working closely with other specialist engineers in the Category and Project Teams,
the role includes:-
- Chairman or product owner in preparation to conduct the appropriate levels of
Engineering Design Reviews both internally, and with Client and Suppliers.
- Technical Regulations and Standards (TRS) conformity assessments.
- Industry Standards - API, ASME, BSEN, ISO, EU, DnV, PED / PSSR and NORSOK
Regulations, Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA).
- Electrical Apparatus in Hazardous Areas - ATEX, IECEx, NEC 500/505.
- Review/Approval of all documentation submitted by the sub-supplier, including
drawings and calculations to the required industry standards (e.g. Flow calculations,
general arrangements, interface layout drawings, hydraulic schematics, electrical
schematics and single line diagrams).
- Review/Approval of acceptance test procedures such as structural load testing, proof
pressure, control and electrical systems and functional testing.
- HAZOP, EEHA, EHA and other risk assessments.
- Supplier technical deviations assessment (GRV) and Technical Queries (TQD).
- Performance of the Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
- Have supported the production of the HPU as Lead Engineer on many other
successful projects, including BP Andrew and Skarv, Deep Panuke (Encana), Kipper

3. (Esso), Kizomba (ExxonMobil), Simian Sapphire (Burullus Gas Co), Snohvit (Statoil),
1506 (ENI), Gorgon-Janzs (ExxonMobil), and Ichthys (Inpex).
- Part of the Out-of-hours Aftermarket Technical Support (24/7 Hydro-Mechanical) for
company products out in the field.
MARITIME EXPERIENCE
1978 – Served in the Royal Navy as a Marine Engineer on the following –
- HMS Fisgard / HMS Caledonia
- RM Poole – Landing craft (LCVP & LCM) – Electrical & Mechanical Maintainer and
operator
- HMS Hermes - Maintainer and operator. AMC Watch-keeping auxiliary machinery.
- Fleet Maintenance Group – Portsmouth (Ship maintenance and repair)
- Fleet Maintenance Group – HMS Stena Inspector (now RFA Diligence) ship repair
and maintenance operating out of the Falkland Islands (NP2010)
- Royal Naval Reserves, a further 10 years’ experience, served as a Petty Officer
(DMEO) on MCM10 River Class minesweepers and P2000 Archer Class training
vessels. Operator maintainer, ship maintenance and repair.
- Several periods of long term employment on these vessels, including contracts with
the RN conducting Fire-fighting and Damage Control trials on HMS Naiad (Project Hul-
Vul).
Interests - Volunteering
Currently operate and maintain the 170 tonne MV Pride of Bristol (ex-HMS Messina) as a
Second Engineer – where we provide a training platform for special needs groups, Sea
Cadets and Navy Reserves.
