Research into my relevant Genre.
1. Research into my relevant genre.
The genre that is relevant to my Music Video and theme is very hard to define and describe
as a whole which means my music video will either be breaking conventions or wont
however after lots of research I’ve narrowed down the genre and have decided to use an
indie rock dress sense as I feel this relates to my audience as a whole whereas the music is
actually more drum and bass however I feel this still fits into the category of indie etc. as I
believe that demographically indie ‘students’ is what drum and bass is aimed at.
Drum and bass is a type of electronic music which emerged in the mid 1990s. The genre is
characterized by fast break beats (typically between 160–180 bpm) occasional variation is
noted in older compositions), with heavy bass and sub-bass lines. Drum and bass began as
an offshoot of the United Kingdom rave scene of the very early 1990s. Over the first decade
of its existence, the incorporation of elements from various musical genres led to many
permutations in its overall style.
Drum and bass has many origins of where its come from for example Jungle, Break beat
hardcore, Hip hop, Dub, Dancehall, Ragga, Techno. Therefore showing a lot of variety and
how its taken all styles and incorporated them leaving its popularity in 2012 very high in the
UK, however in Europe and America its not as highly popular.
Some of the top drum and bass artists are as follows not in chronological order:
Chase and Status
Sub Focus
Camo & Crooked
Noisia
Netsky
Pendulum
Danny Byrd
Andy C
The Prodigy
High Contrast
Nero
DJ Fresh
Skream
Benga
Delta Heavy
2. Drum and Bass and similar genres do not
have a specific guideline to what is involved
in the music video. I have gathered a few
screen shots from various videos of popular
D&B artists these screenshots show the
following attitudes:
Random Storylines (postmodern)
Gigs, Live Shows.
Cartoons.
Green screens.
Narratives.
Confusing lyric related videos.
From the research I have gathered I have
concluded that there is no specific theme to
the majority of D&B videos.
