3. JOHN DEWEY (1859-1952)
o Born on 20th October in Burlington, Vermont.
o He was an American philosopher, educationist and
psychologist.
o Professor of philosophy at the university of Chicago.
o One of the co-founder of the philosophical school
of pragmatism.
o WORKS :- My pedagogic creed, The school and
society, Democracy and education, Schools of
tomorrow, Education today etc.
o His ideas have been influential in education and
social reformation.
o Founder of laboratory (experimental) school in
Chicago.
4. EDUCATIONAL IDEAS
Defined education as a continued process of experiencing and of revising
or reorganizing those experiences.
Knowledge and action were important, but not equally important.
The worth of educational experiences is measured in terms of the result it
produces for the good of the individual and society.
Dewey was convinced of the organic relationship that existed between the
individual and society.
He calls for a system of education that should break the barriers of caste,
creed, colour, religion, language and even nationality.
Established an organized relationship between
individual and society which is the undercurrent of
democratic education.
5. DEWEY’S EXPERIMENTAL SCHOOL
Opened experimental school in the university of Chicago in 1896.
Dewey’s school was experimental in two respects: *constant use of
experiments in methods of teaching * Functioned as a laboratory and a
miniature society
Aim was to create conditions for the discovery of natural ways of teaching
and learning.
Dewey wished his children to be in close touch with the world around
them.
Learning involved conversation, investigation
construction and the four fold activities
prescribed by Dewey for the
spontaneous development of the
individual.
7. CURRICULUM
Supreme importance to study of language and to those activities
connected with it ‘s study – Speaking, writing, reading and spelling.
Principle of flexibility
He was in favour of integrated active curriculum instead of divided into
subject-matter segments.

much on Dewey’s influence.
