Contribution of John Dewey to Education
1. Dewey’s Philosophy of Education
 Dewey defines education as the development of all those capacities in the
individual which enable him to control his environment and fulfill his possibilities.
 Dewey belives Education process has two sides – one philosophical and the other
sociological
 According to Dewey the aims of Education are, social efficiency, Education is life ,
Education is experience, and Education should combine Theory and Practice.
2. Dewey on school of curriculum
 Dewey advocates that broader curricular programmes are needed and emphasis
should be placed in the total development of the person as being equally important
as the intellectual and the academic.
 The teacher is a guide and director he steers the boat, and guide the students into
their right path. The more a teacher is aware of the past experience of students of
their hopes, desires, chief interests the better will be.
 A teacher should always be a prophet of the true God, like he should give
information about the proper social life.
3. Dewey’s method of teaching
 Dewey’s method of teaching is based on his pragmatic philosophy.
 Pragmatism: Knowledge that can be required through human relationship with
the natural surroundings.
 Dewey believes that knowledge takes place from concrete and meaningful
situations and direct experiments is the basis of all methods.
 Dewey’s method of teaching are based on the principles of learning by doing
activities in connection with the life of the children.
 For his Project method Dewey laid down the following five steps as essential,
1) The pupil should have a genuine situation of experiences.
2) A genuine problem should arise from this situation and stimulate the thinking of
the child
3) The child should obtain information or make observation needed to deal with
the problems.
4) The suggested solution should occur to him.
5) He should have an opportunity to test his ideas by application.
4. Dewey’s Educational Thought and Practice
 Dewey’s social theory of education with the logic of experimental method has
been very influential in the development of modern education practice
 He introduced a more human touch in the process of education
 Dewey considered school as a place of practical realization of social
experiments, it provide a lot more confidence and in depth knowledge to the
students over the subjects.
 Till the end of 19 th century the educational world was dominated by the
religiously-motivated moral aim , and the information aim. Dewey disregarded
all these aims of education and showed a better path of learning
 Dewey does not believe in an ultimate aim of education, he always speaks of
immediate or proximate aim.
LABORATORY SCHOOL
 John Dewey established Laboratory school at the university of Chicago in 1896.
 Dewey tested his ideas of education here
 Classes consisted of theoretical work and practice.
 This innovative and creative learning catches the attention of the whole world.
 But surprisingly, the history of this world famous experimental school existed only
for seven years , until 1903.
Dewey is a source of inspiration to many thinkers ,educationalist and philosophers , he
enlighten the whole world with his philosophy of education. No doubt, his perspectives on
Education could serve as a foundation for the future methods of the learning process.
