Dewey’s Laboratory School opened in 1896 at Chicago.
Dewey tested his ideas of education there.
No school subjects in the conventional were taught.
Classes consisted of theoretical work and practice.
The child came to school to do.
Activities were based in craft activities and practical experiences.
5. DEWEY’S CONCEPT OF OCCUPATION
In Dewey’s school ,education was based on practical or manual training.
This manual training is termed as occupation.
It is the backbone of Dewey’s curriculum reformation.
The occupation includes work with wood and tools, cooking, sewing etc.
Its programs were in the form of activities like play, construction, contact with
nature, self expression, use of tools and others.

It is based on learning by doing.
