- We are working with wildlife farmer’s like Mr. Wei, who has been working with us for 2 years. He is very interested in the health of his produce, and the risks to his business. Mr Wei’s farm is largely bamboo rats, but also has Porcupines, civets…. From the sampling on Mr Wei’s farm: Counts of sampled, wild farmed animals & confirmed RT-PCR results for AstV, CoV, and PMV. So far we’ve only completed testing for these three viral families, but the rest will be done over the next few months. If the farmed bamboo rats continue to be free of any viral infections, it might give us a strategy to suggest alternatives to farmed civets etc. or wild caught mammals for the Chinese wildlife market. We are also interested in working on economic incentives in these wildlife farms and markets.
