for creatives
Brands and people you, and
others like you admire,
heavily respect the
laws you are about to read. These
timeless laws should be on your
mind twenty four hours a day if
you want to build a great brand.Wether
for a product, service or for yourself.
Disobey these laws and your brand
risks not surviving.
The timeless laws are as follows...

Never compare yourself to another brand.
When it comes to personal branding, being unique is what’s important,
not comparing yourseld with a competitor.
Your brand should radiate your tastes, your creative identity
and your passions.You will not share, nor produce anything
that doesn’t say: “This is what I am”

Never mind perfection
Let others persue ‘perfection’.
You, on the other hand understand that what makes
you unique is the sprinkle of madness you add to
what you do. Does not a Ferrari break down too?
Wouldn’t the followers of the brand still
consider it perfect?
Don’t bother with being the leader of the perfectly
functional and utilitarian. Leave those dreams
for others; they need it for peace of mind.

Do not submit to your audience
The reason the brands you admire stay true to themselves
is because they sometimes ignore their client’s wishes.
You should always listen, observe and respect your audience.
But never let their wishes compromise your identity.
You brand comes from you, the creator with a vision
for your brand.There are only two ways to destroy it:
not listning to your audience, and listening to your
audience too much.

Shun the non-believers
Trying to make your brand more relevant
and on trend will certainly ruin it. Not only
because you will loose your uniquness but also
because by trying to please everyone you upset the
most devout admirers of your brand.When the non-believers
opinions get too close to your brand, they erode it.
It’s time for you to say:‘Sorry, but this is not for you’.

Say no to ‘encores’
Your objective is not volume.
Rarity is very important when it comes to branding.
It should be a deliberate strategy to resist your audience’s
requests for more.
Either you stick with this strategy or you follow the pack.

Stay on top of your audience
It took you time to create your brand. It wasn’t
handed to you.You earned it. It’s the result of merit
not privilege.To keep it that way you must stay
on top of your audience like parents on top of their children.
If you treat your audience like your best friend, you will loose
this aura. Respect your audience, always. But keep a certain
distance and preserve a sense of mystery. Be ready to play
you role of adviser, educator and guide.

Do not sell
Instead of selling to and chasing your audience,
you must communicate a myth, some mystery, magic and art.
Those elements in your communication and in everything
you do will be invaluable.

You set the tone, the tone doesn’t set you
You must be culturally anchored.
You first establish your vision and offer the dream,
then the more your audience elevate your vision,
the more valuable you brand becomes.
The tone is in your fingers.

Stay close to the arts
Your brand must promote taste.
That is what art does. By all means visit art galleries,
go and see shows and modern art exhibitions, but don’t follow
art trends.You must be creative and bold.

Do not let anyone do your work
When your audience communicates, buys or
connects with you, it must be you at the other end. Never
let anyone else take over the bridge between you
and your audience.Your brand value is based on
the value and uniqueness you offer.

Work Hard.
Live simply.
Be quiet.
Remain Humble.
Stay positive.
Create your own luck.
Be nice.
Be polite.
