The cognitive process of decoding symbols to derive 
meaning of a text (like reading a book or magazine) 
Three components of reading: 
Decoding 
Comprehension 
Retention
Decoding refers to the process of translating a written word 
into a proper sound associated with it. 
Decoding gets faster and more efficient with practice and 
familiarity with words.
It is defined as the level of understanding a text. This 
understanding comes from the interaction between the words 
that are written and how they trigger knowledge outside the 
text/message. 
Comprehension relies on a mastery of decoding. Children who 
struggle to decode find it difficult to understand and remember 
what has been read.
The condition of retaining (keeping) something. It 
could 
be in the Short term memory or Long term Memory. 
The ability to retain, which relies heavily on a child’s 
decoding proficiency and ability to comprehend what 
is 
read.
Skimming 
Scanning 
Intensive/Functional reading 
Extensive/Recreational Reading 
Literature Reading 
Detailed Study Reading
General understanding of the text 
Fastest type of reading based on purpose 
Reader gets a gist of the text instead of in-depth 
meaning 
Also called rapid-survey reading
Looking for specific information in a fairly large 
amount of text 
It means your skip more text than you read to find 
information 
No method involved, can search anywhere 
randomly 
Also called ‘search reading’
It requires every word to be read and understood in 
terms of context reading 
Usually done in area of field/research only, and is 
time consuming 
Also called word-for-word reading
Used for light reading 
Reader may skip or read entirely, based on interest 
in content 
Reading for leisure
Not mainly for pleasure 
Used to familiarize reader with different genres of 
literature such as novels, short stories, dramas, 
biographies, etc.
Requires in-depth reading and taking notes of

Methods such as SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, 
Recall, Review) are used 
Works well in research and academic studies
SURVEY- of the text, critically examining the 
headings, pictures, summaries 
QUESTIONS- turn all the headings into questions 
and speculate the answers before reading 
READ- focus on answering your questions as you 
read. Write down your answers to make quick notes
RECALL- without looking at the text or your notes, 
write down the main points of the content. This 
forces you to think, committing the content to 
memory 
REVIEW- now using your books and notes, compare 
your performance and correct mistakes.
