essence of human identity.
Whereas previous techno-
logical developments al-
tered human behavior and
appearances,AI will funda-
mentally reshape individu-
als’core social and political
beliefs, including about the
nature and role of the state.
In the nineteenth-century
Industrial Revolution, me-
chanical power – mostly
fueled by burning carbon –
replaced human and animal
power as a source for ener-
gytobeusedinthetransfor-
mation of nature and the
production of industrial and
consumer goods. As the
revolution matured in the
twentieth century, hard
physical labor was left to
only a dwindling group of
occupations.
For a glimpse of most
pre-industrial work, look at
roofers, who today are still
exhausted and worn out by
toiling in the elements in
uncomfortable, distorting
physical positions. They
are preserving in the twen-
ty-first century what was
once a general experience.
Early twentieth-century
automobile workers bent
over their tools, lifted
heavy objects, and applied
huge amounts of energy.
Their early twenty-first-
century counterparts look
at monitors and track the
robots who have taken over
the heavy physical tasks.
As the sweat economy has
disappeared, working peo-
ple have become weaker,
but also healthier. Those
who want to retain some
physical strength now go to
the gym.
The information-tech-
nology revolution repre-
sented another step in this
human development. As
machines have taken over
more cognitive tasks, com-
puters now monitor the ro-
bots doing the physical
work. With the elimination
of mental work (like the
complex arithmetic that
shop assistants used to per-
form), the same old pattern
has continued: many peo-
ple have stopped thinking
at work and devoted those
energies to crossword puz-
zles, sudoku, or Wordle.
Today’s revolution goes
much further, because it af-
fects how collective activi-
ty is conceptualized. This
development is perhaps
clearest in the military, but
it also has implications for
political participation and
even our understanding of
legitimate authority.
The twentieth century
wasmarkedbythemostde-
structivewarsinhumanhis-
tory,whichinturnproduced
a new impulse to democra-
tize.Sincesoldiersandtheir
families needed to be re-
warded for their sacrifices,
both World Wars led to an
extension of the franchise.
Classical political liberal-
ism held that peopleshould
not be expected to sacrifice
their lives for a specific po-
litical entity unless they had
some say in the matter.But
technology offers a way to
short-circuit this process.
Aroundtheworld,educated
urban populations increas-
ingly are not expected to
engage with the brutal side
of human affairs. Consider
Russia. Russian President
VladimirPutinhasreliedon
semi-autonomous merce-
nary groups, peripheral
populations, and even pris-
oners to wage his war in
Ukraine, because he knows
thatthepopulationsofMos-
cow and St. Petersburg are
physically and – more im-
portantly – psychologically
unsuited for the task.
This is not a new prob-
lem, of course. Before
World War I, military com-
manders in big European
countries wondered how
they would field large ar-
mies, given that modern
industrial life had made
many recruits physically
unsuited for military ser-
vice. Today, military plan-
ners still harbor the same
concerns. In 2017, the Pen-
tagonestimatedthat71%of
young Americans (aged 17
to24)wereunfitforservice,
and since then the share has
risen to 77%. But it has
technologies that earlier
generations could scarcely
have imagined. War is be-
ingtakenoverbyunmanned
appliances – such as auton-
omous drones – just as in-
dustrial and clerical work
was in earlier eras.
To understand the politi-
cal consequences of the au-
tomatization of war, just
consider how society over-
all has changed in the mod-
ernera.Inmedievalsociety,
humans were generally di-
videdintothreeestates:ora-
tores,bellatores,laboratores
– those who orated or
prayed (the clergy); those
who fought (the aristocra-
cy); and the rest, who actu-
ally did some “work” in the
form of manual labor.
It was owing to their
fighting capacity that the
aristocracy originally could
claim massive political
power. But after they
stopped fighting and re-
tired to a foppish court ex-
istence, the legitimacy of
their rule vanished in a
cloud of perfume. With the
mass armies that followed
the French Revolution, war
became democratized, and
so did politics. But now
that war is being fought
through technology, power
is moving away from the
people again.
What will come of the
remaining social groups?
Just as the Industrial Revo-
lution reduced the need for
laboratores, the AI revolu-
tion is rendering humans
obsolete in the military
sphere. Like the laboratores
before them, the bellatores
are becoming machines.
That leaves the oratores,
who are tasked with pre-
serving what is still distinc-
tively human.
Are they, too, vulnerable
to creeping redundancy and
eventualexistentialdestruc-
tion at the hands of technol-
ogy? Fearing as much,
some critics and tech lead-
ers are calling for a “pause”
on AI development. But
technology has never
stopped simply because
some people wanted it to.

POLITICAL
LIBERALISM
The twentieth century
was marked by the most
destructive wars in hu-

produced a new impulse
to democratize. Since

IN-DEPTH
FREEDOM OF SPEECH
NEEDS CLARITY FOR
SOCIAL MEDIA TROLLS
BJP IN READINESS
FOR POLL BATTLE
hen BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma made
objectionable references to Prophet Muham-
mad last year, there was a strong backlash
from the minority community and questions were
raised about the extent to which freedom of speech
should be allowed. Her statement led to riots break-
ing out in parts of the country and India faced strong
criticism from the Islamic nations. The Supreme
Court took a serious view of it and denied relief to
Sharma. The troll army immediately swung into ac-
tion and the judges were belittled on social media
platforms.
The dilemma before the courts, including the Su-
preme Court, is whether free speech allows criticism
of the judiciary if there is any observation or judgment
that is not in sync with a party line. The latest example
is that of a Tamil Nadu publisher Badri Seshadri who
has been arrested for remarks against CJI DY Chan-
drachud’s observations on Manipur situation.
Freedom of speech allows one to go this far and
no further. Politicians have proved that.
W
haratiya Janata Party’s sights are fixed on
2024, besides assembly elections in Ra-
jasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and
Chhattisgarh which are due later this year. Prime
Minister Narendra Modi is spearheading the party’s
campaign with his typical style of oratory. Party
president JP Nadda is not lagging behind and reshuf-
fled the organisational set-up on Saturday. He also
held one-on-one meetings with the party’s core group
members in Rajasthan.
The organisational rejig is of special significance
for Uttar Pradesh where the party is betting high on
Pasmanda Muslims.
Induction of Tariq
Mansoor, a Pasman-
da Muslim and for-
mer vice-chancellor
of Aligarh Muslim
University as vice-
president is notable
from that perspec-
tive. If the strategy
helps the party make
inroads in the Mus-
lim vote bank will be
an added advantage.
To further consoli-
date its hold on UP
the party has brought
in Rajya Sabha MP
Radha Mohan Agar-
wal as a general-sec-
retary. Agarwal be-
longs to Gorakhpur, the constituency of Chief Min-
ister Yogi Adityanath.
Tariq Mansoor is not the only Muslim in Nadda’s
team. Having learnt its lesson from Karnataka defeat,
the BJP has thought it wise to include Kerala’s Ab-
dulla Kutty for a second term. He was earlier ap-
pointed vice-president in 2020 leading to resentment
in BJP’s Kerala unit. With Kerala in its sight, it ap-
peared imperative for the party to give representation
to Muslims at the national level.
The new team has its agenda laid out. With the new
team the BJP has covered all flanks and is battle-
ready. With Prime Minister Modi in the lead the team
members have to take his message forward.

any moons ago,
somewhere be-
tween the 7th-9th
century, the
Kamakhya tem-
ple was built in
Assam, where
the Goddess has been worshipped
since time immemorial.
Nestled on a hillock with a bird’s
eye view of the serene city of
Guwahati, the temple faced multi-
ple destructions and was rebuilt by
the Koch King Nara Narayan and
again by the Ahom kings.
As you reach the car parking
area, you’ll come across shops on
both sides of the street stretched to
the temple’s main entrance making
it look like a vibrant jamboree, the
hustle and bustle exhibits an old-
world charm, positive vibes and
shops run by dedicated Assamese
pandit families.
After entering through the main
entrance, as you take the right to-
wards the administrative block,
there’s a “Soubhagya Kund ”,
where the devotees wash their feet
and hands, offer prayers to the
idols of Lord Ganesh before enter-
ing the main edifice to seek God-
dess Kamakhya’s blessings.
Kamakhya Temple’s distin-
guished feature is the mythological
yoni of Sati, set in natural stone
inside a small dark cave below the
ground level where there’s a mi-
raculous natural spring of water
keeping this stone moist till date
nobody could know the mysterious
source of the continuous water
flow. There’s Goddess Saraswati
and Goddess Lakshmi alongside
the yoni. This chamber of the tem-
ple is known as “Garbhagriha”.
As I walked through the temple
premises, somewhere in-between
facts and myths, I had the privilege
to gather some information from
Priests Manoj Sarma and Kamal
Sarma regarding the temple’s his-
torical significance.
The temple consists of 4 cham-
bers named Garbhagriha, Chalan-
ta, Pancharatna and Natmandira.
“Chalanta” is the first portion
to the west, a square chamber of
Atchala style. The entrance to the
temple is generally via its north-
ern door, Ahom style dochala. It
houses a movable idol of the God-
dess, a later addition, which ex-
plains the name. The walls of this
chamber contain sculpted images
of Nar Narayana, related inscrip-
tions and other Gods. “Chalanta”
leads into the “Garbhagriha” via
descending steps.
The “Pancharatna” to the west of
“Chalanta” is large and rectangular
with a flat roof and five smaller
shikharas of the same style as the
main shikhara. The middle shikha-
ra is slightly bigger than the other
four in typical “Pancharatna” style.
The “Natamandira” extends to
the west of the pancharatna with an
apsidal end and ridged roof in
Ahom style. The inside walls bear
inscriptions from the 17th century.
The outer wall has stone sculptures
from an earlier period.
Once a demon named Naraka
fell in love with Goddess Kam-
akhya and proposed to marry her.
To get out of this situation, she
gave him a task to build steps from
the bottom of Nilachal hill to the
temple in one night and promised
that on completion of the
task she’d marry him.
However, when he was
about to complete the task,
the Goddess played a trick
on him. She converted a
crow into a cock to give an illusion
of dawn. Naraka was tricked easily
and stopped making the staircase
halfway through.These incomplete
steps are called the “Mekhelauja
Path “. This path still exists but
people mostly prefer taking the
motor-able road up the hill.
Another distinct feature of the
temple is the “Rin Muson Kund”
which is believed to cleanse your
sins. It’s enlightening to know
about the existence of a “Sacred
Shivling”, “Pimmakeshwar” in the
bottom of the pond which remains
submerged under the water
throughout the year and only once
a year does the shivling surface as
the water is pumped out for the
devotees to offer their prayers on
theauspiciousoccasionofshivratri.
There’s a traditional Bali Ghar
where buffalo, goat and pigeon are
offered to the Goddess.
Right at the entrance, on the left
there’s an area where I performed
the Kamakhya Hawan.
Inside the Chalanta chamber on
the left, there’s a small area where
the sacrifice( bali) is placed and I
performed a special personal puja
which even you all can do with a
prior appointment.
Performed the puja and hawan
with priestsYuva Kanta Sarma and
Kamal Sarma. Without the con-
straint of time, as I sat and basked
in the blessings of the Goddess, the
bells kept chiming in the back-
ground. Both the puja and the ha-
wan made it a platform for the
mental soul and physical regenera-
tion, a beautiful catharsis for me.
There’s a bhog ghar which
serves khichdi, papad, chole and
kheer.
Kamakhya temple is one of the
51 Shakti Peetha which is an an-
cient temple dedicated to the Hin-
du goddess Parvati. It is also called
“Ashta Pitha” and is one of the
most significant and powerful pil-
grimage destinations for devotees
across the globe.
The temple remains closed for
three days during the Ambubachi
festival. The word “Ambu” means
water and “Bachi means child. It is
believed that Goddess Kamakhya
goes through her menstrual cycle
during this time, hence the temple
remains closed. Lakhs of people
throng the holy site around this time
to seek penance for their wrongdo-
ings and blessings of the Goddess.
According to Kalika Puran
when Sati’s father King Daksha
organized a yagna, he did not in-
vite his daughter and son-in-law
Shiva to participate in it. Sati, who
was angry at this behaviour of her
father, went to her father's place at
Kailash to ask the reason
for it. Daksha insulted Sati
and belittled her husband.
Sati could not bear the
fact that her husband was
being insulted and she im-
mediately jumped into the yagna
fire. Knowing this Shiva, became
furious and went to Daksha's palace
and chopped off his head. After see-
ing the corpse of his wife, out of
rage he lifted the body of Sati on his
shoulder and started the dance of
destruction it continued for several
days and the earth was on the brink
of being destroyed. To control Shi-
va and protect the earth, Vishnu
chopped off the body of Sati into
multiple pieces with his Sudarshan
chakra to calm down Shiva.
The body parts of Sati fell all
over 51 places in India and Shiva
searched for her remains all over
the universe. Finally, he found her
yoni in Assam’s Nilachal hill
where the temple stands high and
mighty even today. Hence, it is
also known as yonisthana.
The Yoni of Devi in the Temple
is believed to be very powerful.
Tantriks come here to achieve their
desired success as Maa Kamakhya
is the Goddess of Tantra as well.
Kamakhya hillock consist of ten
mahavidya. They are Kali, Tara,
Sarusi, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi,
Chinnamasta , Dhumavati, Bagal-
amukhi, Matangi, Kamaladevi.
The Doloi Kamakhya Devalaya
is looking after the management.
APS Bhargav Goswami, Assis-
tant Commissioner of Police,
Jalukbari Guwahati and SI Ab-
hilekh Talukdar, Kamakhya Out-
post, Pandas(priests) Manoj Sarma
and Kamal Sarma ensured I had a
gratifying darshan and my rituals
went off without a glitch.
Like the life force of a tree man-
ifests itself into lush leaves, bloom-
ing flowers and ripe fruits, Shakti,
the life force of the Universe,
manifests Herself before us as
Kamakhya, Sati, Parvati, Durga,
and countless other forms. Per-
haps, this is why Devi takes the
form of Kamakhya, which means,
the Goddess of Desire.

reports started doing the rounds
that she owns the world’s 5th larg-
est diamond. The photo shows Tamannaah
flaunting a sparkling humongous diamond on
her finger. Reportedly, South superstar Ram
Charan’s wife Upasana Kamineni Konidela
gifted her the diamond. However, it was all
false and Tamannaah herself clarified it on
social media. In a recent interview with
Siddharth Kannan, Vijay was asked
about the news of Tamannaah owning
the world’s 5th largest diamond. He
laughed and shed light on the situation. The
actor said, “Aapko pata hai na woh kya hai?
Woh bottle ka dhakkan hai. Woh mazaak

carry kar rahi hai ke Rs 2 crore ka fifth-
largest diamond. Rs 2 crore mein fifth-

further added, “Maine usse message

  • 4. he rapid march of ar- tificial intel- ligence is not only disrupt- ing conventional notions of work.Itisalsochangingthe essence of human identity. Whereas previous techno- logical developments al- tered human behavior and appearances,AI will funda- mentally reshape individu- als’core social and political beliefs, including about the nature and role of the state. In the nineteenth-century Industrial Revolution, me- chanical power – mostly fueled by burning carbon – replaced human and animal power as a source for ener- gytobeusedinthetransfor- mation of nature and the production of industrial and consumer goods. As the revolution matured in the twentieth century, hard physical labor was left to only a dwindling group of occupations. For a glimpse of most pre-industrial work, look at roofers, who today are still exhausted and worn out by toiling in the elements in uncomfortable, distorting physical positions. They are preserving in the twen- ty-first century what was once a general experience. Early twentieth-century automobile workers bent over their tools, lifted heavy objects, and applied huge amounts of energy. Their early twenty-first- century counterparts look at monitors and track the robots who have taken over the heavy physical tasks. As the sweat economy has disappeared, working peo- ple have become weaker, but also healthier. Those who want to retain some physical strength now go to the gym. The information-tech- nology revolution repre- sented another step in this human development. As machines have taken over more cognitive tasks, com- puters now monitor the ro- bots doing the physical work. With the elimination of mental work (like the complex arithmetic that shop assistants used to per- form), the same old pattern has continued: many peo- ple have stopped thinking at work and devoted those energies to crossword puz- zles, sudoku, or Wordle. Today’s revolution goes much further, because it af- fects how collective activi- ty is conceptualized. This development is perhaps clearest in the military, but it also has implications for political participation and even our understanding of legitimate authority. The twentieth century wasmarkedbythemostde- structivewarsinhumanhis- tory, whichinturnproduced a new impulse to democra- tize.Sincesoldiersandtheir families needed to be re- warded for their sacrifices, both World Wars led to an extension of the franchise. Classical political liberal- ism held that peopleshould not be expected to sacrifice their lives for a specific po- litical entity unless they had some say in the matter. But technology offers a way to short-circuit this process. Aroundtheworld, educated urban populations increas- ingly are not expected to engage with the brutal side of human affairs. Consider Russia. Russian President VladimirPutinhasreliedon semi-autonomous merce- nary groups, peripheral populations, and even pris- oners to wage his war in Ukraine, because he knows thatthepopulationsofMos- cow and St. Petersburg are physically and – more im- portantly – psychologically unsuited for the task. This is not a new prob- lem, of course. Before World War I, military com- manders in big European countries wondered how they would field large ar- mies, given that modern industrial life had made many recruits physically unsuited for military ser- vice. Today, military plan- ners still harbor the same concerns. In 2017, the Pen- tagonestimatedthat71%of young Americans (aged 17 to24)wereunfitforservice, and since then the share has risen to 77%. But it has technologies that earlier generations could scarcely have imagined. War is be- ingtakenoverbyunmanned appliances – such as auton- omous drones – just as in- dustrial and clerical work was in earlier eras. To understand the politi- cal consequences of the au- tomatization of war, just consider how society over- all has changed in the mod- ernera.Inmedievalsociety, humans were generally di- videdintothreeestates:ora- tores, bellatores, laboratores – those who orated or prayed (the clergy); those who fought (the aristocra- cy); and the rest, who actu- ally did some “work” in the form of manual labor. It was owing to their fighting capacity that the aristocracy originally could claim massive political power. But after they stopped fighting and re- tired to a foppish court ex- istence, the legitimacy of their rule vanished in a cloud of perfume. With the mass armies that followed the French Revolution, war became democratized, and so did politics. But now that war is being fought through technology, power is moving away from the people again. What will come of the remaining social groups? Just as the Industrial Revo- lution reduced the need for laboratores, the AI revolu- tion is rendering humans obsolete in the military sphere. Like the laboratores before them, the bellatores are becoming machines. That leaves the oratores, who are tasked with pre- serving what is still distinc- tively human. Are they, too, vulnerable to creeping redundancy and eventualexistentialdestruc- tion at the hands of technol- ogy? Fearing as much, some critics and tech lead- ers are calling for a “pause” on AI development. But technology has never stopped simply because some people wanted it to. Since soldiers and their families needed to be rewarded for their sacrifices, both World Wars led to an extension of the franchise. Classical political liberalism held that people should not be expected to sacrifice their lives for a specific politi- cal entity unless they had some say in the matter. IN-DEPTH FREEDOM OF SPEECH NEEDS CLARITY FOR SOCIAL MEDIA TROLLS BJP IN READINESS FOR POLL BATTLE hen BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma made objectionable references to Prophet Muham- mad last year, there was a strong backlash from the minority community and questions were raised about the extent to which freedom of speech should be allowed. Her statement led to riots break- ing out in parts of the country and India faced strong criticism from the Islamic nations. The Supreme Court took a serious view of it and denied relief to Sharma. The troll army immediately swung into ac- tion and the judges were belittled on social media platforms. The dilemma before the courts, including the Su- preme Court, is whether free speech allows criticism of the judiciary if there is any observation or judgment that is not in sync with a party line. The latest example is that of a Tamil Nadu publisher Badri Seshadri who has been arrested for remarks against CJI DY Chan- drachud’s observations on Manipur situation. Freedom of speech allows one to go this far and no further. Politicians have proved that. W haratiya Janata Party’s sights are fixed on 2024, besides assembly elections in Ra- jasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Chhattisgarh which are due later this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is spearheading the party’s campaign with his typical style of oratory. Party president JP Nadda is not lagging behind and reshuf- fled the organisational set-up on Saturday. He also held one-on-one meetings with the party’s core group members in Rajasthan. The organisational rejig is of special significance for Uttar Pradesh where the party is betting high on Pasmanda Muslims. Induction of Tariq Mansoor, a Pasman- da Muslim and for- mer vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University as vice- president is notable from that perspec- tive. If the strategy helps the party make inroads in the Mus- lim vote bank will be an added advantage. To further consoli- date its hold on UP the party has brought in Rajya Sabha MP Radha Mohan Agar- wal as a general-sec- retary. Agarwal be- longs to Gorakhpur, the constituency of Chief Min- ister Yogi Adityanath. Tariq Mansoor is not the only Muslim in Nadda’s team. Having learnt its lesson from Karnataka defeat, the BJP has thought it wise to include Kerala’s Ab- dulla Kutty for a second term. He was earlier ap- pointed vice-president in 2020 leading to resentment in BJP’s Kerala unit. With Kerala in its sight, it ap- peared imperative for the party to give representation to Muslims at the national level. The new team has its agenda laid out. With the new team the BJP has covered all flanks and is battle- ready. With Prime Minister Modi in the lead the team members have to take his message forward. B The organisational rejig is of special significance for UP where the party is betting high on Pasmanda Muslims. Induction of Tariq Mansoor, a Pasmanda Muslim ex- VC of AMU as V-P is notable from that perspective T Whereas previous technological developments altered human behavior appearances, the rapid rise of artificial intelligence will reshape individuals’ core social and political beliefs, including about the nature and role of the state. • 11. Your Page JAIPUR, MONDAY | JULY 31, 2023 firstindia.co.in firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur thefirstindia thefirstindia thefirstindia 10 any moons ago, somewhere be- tween the 7th-9th century, the Kamakhya tem- ple was built in Assam, where the Goddess has been worshipped since time immemorial. Nestled on a hillock with a bird’s eye view of the serene city of Guwahati, the temple faced multi- ple destructions and was rebuilt by the Koch King Nara Narayan and again by the Ahom kings. As you reach the car parking area, you’ll come across shops on both sides of the street stretched to the temple’s main entrance making it look like a vibrant jamboree, the hustle and bustle exhibits an old- world charm, positive vibes and shops run by dedicated Assamese pandit families. After entering through the main entrance, as you take the right to- wards the administrative block, there’s a “Soubhagya Kund ”, where the devotees wash their feet and hands, offer prayers to the idols of Lord Ganesh before enter- ing the main edifice to seek God- dess Kamakhya’s blessings. Kamakhya Temple’s distin- guished feature is the mythological yoni of Sati, set in natural stone inside a small dark cave below the ground level where there’s a mi- raculous natural spring of water keeping this stone moist till date nobody could know the mysterious source of the continuous water flow. There’s Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Lakshmi alongside the yoni. This chamber of the tem- ple is known as “Garbhagriha”. As I walked through the temple premises, somewhere in-between facts and myths, I had the privilege to gather some information from Priests Manoj Sarma and Kamal Sarma regarding the temple’s his- torical significance. The temple consists of 4 cham- bers named Garbhagriha, Chalan- ta, Pancharatna and Natmandira. “Chalanta” is the first portion to the west, a square chamber of Atchala style. The entrance to the temple is generally via its north- ern door, Ahom style dochala. It houses a movable idol of the God- dess, a later addition, which ex- plains the name. The walls of this chamber contain sculpted images of Nar Narayana, related inscrip- tions and other Gods. “Chalanta” leads into the “Garbhagriha” via descending steps. The “Pancharatna” to the west of “Chalanta” is large and rectangular with a flat roof and five smaller shikharas of the same style as the main shikhara. The middle shikha- ra is slightly bigger than the other four in typical “Pancharatna” style. The “Natamandira” extends to the west of the pancharatna with an apsidal end and ridged roof in Ahom style. The inside walls bear inscriptions from the 17th century. The outer wall has stone sculptures from an earlier period. Once a demon named Naraka fell in love with Goddess Kam- akhya and proposed to marry her. To get out of this situation, she gave him a task to build steps from the bottom of Nilachal hill to the temple in one night and promised that on completion of the task she’d marry him. However, when he was about to complete the task, the Goddess played a trick on him. She converted a crow into a cock to give an illusion of dawn. Naraka was tricked easily and stopped making the staircase halfway through. These incomplete steps are called the “Mekhelauja Path “. This path still exists but people mostly prefer taking the motor-able road up the hill. Another distinct feature of the temple is the “Rin Muson Kund” which is believed to cleanse your sins. It’s enlightening to know about the existence of a “Sacred Shivling”, “Pimmakeshwar” in the bottom of the pond which remains submerged under the water throughout the year and only once a year does the shivling surface as the water is pumped out for the devotees to offer their prayers on theauspiciousoccasionofshivratri. There’s a traditional Bali Ghar where buffalo, goat and pigeon are offered to the Goddess. Right at the entrance, on the left there’s an area where I performed the Kamakhya Hawan. Inside the Chalanta chamber on the left, there’s a small area where the sacrifice( bali) is placed and I performed a special personal puja which even you all can do with a prior appointment. Performed the puja and hawan with priestsYuva Kanta Sarma and Kamal Sarma. Without the con- straint of time, as I sat and basked in the blessings of the Goddess, the bells kept chiming in the back- ground. Both the puja and the ha- wan made it a platform for the mental soul and physical regenera- tion, a beautiful catharsis for me. There’s a bhog ghar which serves khichdi, papad, chole and kheer. Kamakhya temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peetha which is an an- cient temple dedicated to the Hin- du goddess Parvati. It is also called “Ashta Pitha” and is one of the most significant and powerful pil- grimage destinations for devotees across the globe. The temple remains closed for three days during the Ambubachi festival. The word “Ambu” means water and “Bachi means child. It is believed that Goddess Kamakhya goes through her menstrual cycle during this time, hence the temple remains closed. Lakhs of people throng the holy site around this time to seek penance for their wrongdo- ings and blessings of the Goddess. According to Kalika Puran when Sati’s father King Daksha organized a yagna, he did not in- vite his daughter and son-in-law Shiva to participate in it. Sati, who was angry at this behaviour of her father, went to her father's place at Kailash to ask the reason for it. Daksha insulted Sati and belittled her husband. Sati could not bear the fact that her husband was being insulted and she im- mediately jumped into the yagna fire. Knowing this Shiva, became furious and went to Daksha's palace and chopped off his head. After see- ing the corpse of his wife, out of rage he lifted the body of Sati on his shoulder and started the dance of destruction it continued for several days and the earth was on the brink of being destroyed. To control Shi- va and protect the earth, Vishnu chopped off the body of Sati into multiple pieces with his Sudarshan chakra to calm down Shiva. The body parts of Sati fell all over 51 places in India and Shiva searched for her remains all over the universe. Finally, he found her yoni in Assam’s Nilachal hill where the temple stands high and mighty even today. Hence, it is also known as yonisthana. The Yoni of Devi in the Temple is believed to be very powerful. Tantriks come here to achieve their desired success as Maa Kamakhya is the Goddess of Tantra as well. Kamakhya hillock consist of ten mahavidya. They are Kali, Tara, Sarusi, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chinnamasta , Dhumavati, Bagal- amukhi, Matangi, Kamaladevi. The Doloi Kamakhya Devalaya is looking after the management. APS Bhargav Goswami, Assis- tant Commissioner of Police, Jalukbari Guwahati and SI Ab- hilekh Talukdar, Kamakhya Out- post, Pandas(priests) Manoj Sarma and Kamal Sarma ensured I had a gratifying darshan and my rituals went off without a glitch. Like the life force of a tree man- ifests itself into lush leaves, bloom- ing flowers and ripe fruits, Shakti, the life force of the Universe, manifests Herself before us as Kamakhya, Sati, Parvati, Durga, and countless other forms. Per- haps, this is why Devi takes the form of Kamakhya, which means, the Goddess of Desire.
