SPIRITUAL SPEAK
Our life is shaped by our
mind; we become what we
think. Suffering follows an
evil thought as the wheels of
a cart follow the oxen that
draw it. Our life is shaped
by our mind; we become
what we think. Joy follow a
pure thought like a shadow
that never leaves.

WHO’S DIWALI GIFT
TO INDIA: COVAXIN
GETS APPROVAL BUT
AFTER LONG WAIT
etting World Health
Organisation’s ap-
proval for India’s in-
digenouslydeveloped
Covaxin had become
a prestige issue for the govern-
ment as the global health body
kept delaying its nod. The reason
it said was insufficient data pro-
vided by Bharat Biotech, the de-
veloper, and awaited a report
from its technical experts. All
this while India kept administer-
ing Covaxin to the people as it
was in desperate need of jabs.
Bharat Biotech also said that it
was working with WHO for the
emergency use authentication
for Covaxin and was hopeful of
an early approval.
Finally, the approval for the
vaccine’s emergency use came
on the eve of Diwali and its time
for double celebration. It is a per-
fect Diwali gift after WHO’s
Technical Advisory Group and
Strategic Group of Experts con-
cluded that Covaxin’s efficacy
outweighs the risks. This will
pave the way for other countries,
including those from the Euro-
pean Union, to recognise Covax-
in and lift travel restrictions on
Indians who have taken the jab.
G
A DIWALI BUSTLING WITH
HOPE PROSPERITY!
eepawali is arguably the
most important festival of
India and Hindus worldwide.
After last year’s of ‘coronic’
lustreless and lightless festi-
val, this year it has brought
a ‘ray of hope’ and expecta-
tions! Deepawali visibly im-
pacts the nation, from the
religious, social, political to
the economic, from the mac-
ro government to the micro-
individual.
We have seen record GST
collections for October, the
beginning of a demand-
boosting festive season, came
in at Rs 1.30 lakh crore, com-
pared with Rs 1.17 lakh crore
in September. October GST
collections were not only the
second highest for the fiscal
year, but the second-highest
monthly collections since the
introduction of the nation-
wide tax in 2017.
In fact, the four legs of eco-
nomic growth that is private
consumption, government
expenditure, private invest-
ment and net exports, are re-
sponding to the festive sea-
son and catching up, at their
won pace. Post the Covid-19
pandemic, the Indian econo-
my is showing signs of
bouncing back which is be-
ing aided greatly by the fes-
tive season. On another level,
we have laws and rules with
arguments flowing back and
forth about pollution, green
crackers and more.
TheDiwalifestivalsinclude
Dhantrayodashi, Narak
Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali),
Lakshmi Puja (Diwali), Go-
vardhan Puja, and Bhaiyya
Dooj. Diwali has a varied rel-
evance to each person, but
what remains common about
the festival is the fact that it
brings joy
, peace and happi-
ness. This is perhaps the only
occasion where everyone
comes together without inhi-
bition.Itisalsoamongthefew
Indian festivals where people
of all faiths come together in
celebration. Diwali has a deep
rooted tradition and is very
rich in significance. What has
perhaps made Diwali as spe-
cialasitistodayisthefactthat
its genesis has been traced
back to as far as the treta yug.
In its own way
, that Diwali
demonstrates how ancient
tales in epics become part of
religious practice. There are
many stories around what
exactly Diwali commemo-
rates and why it is celebrated.
The festival celebrates the
defeat of the evil demon king
RavanabyRama–anincarna-
tionof theGodVishnuandthe
heroof Ramayanaepic.Rama-
yana still holds a power over
each Hindu, even the so-called
atheistsinitsstoryandtheles-
sons therein. It is victory of
good over evil and even the
most deep-rooted metaphor
we can find spiritual solace.
In a later age, the festival
commemorates the defeat of
the demon Narakasura by
Lord Krishna. Like Rama,
Krishna is an incarnation of
the god Vishnu, who has
come to assist humanity in
its time of need.
Other traditions associate
the festival with the birth of
the goddess Lakshmi and her
marriage to Vishnu. In the
Hindu tradition, Lakshmi is
worshipped as the goddess of
wealth, while Vishnu is seen
as the preserver of humanity
.
In southern India, we cel-
ebrate the defeat of the de-
mon Hiranyakshipu by Nar-
asimha, the lion-headed in-
carnation of Vishnu.
The Diwali tradition is cel-
ebrated by Jains and Sikhs as
well, who have their own in-
terpretations of the festival.
For Jains, Diwali celebrates
the nirvana, or enlighten-
ment, of Mahavira, the 24th
spiritual teacher of the Jain
path and the contemporary
tradition’s founder.
Sikhs consider Diwali a
commemorationof therelease
of Guru Hargobind, the sixth
of 10 spiritual leaders, and 52
other men who were impris-
oned by the Mughal Empire
thatruledtheIndiansubconti-
nent from 1526 to 1857.
The diverse origin stories
of Diwali are a reinforce-
ment of our belief system
that good will necessarily tri-
umph over the evils of de-
mons, injustice and igno-
rance. It historically symbol-
izes the victory of good over
evil and celebrates light and
life on both community and
personal levels. On the one
hand, it is a time to rejoice
and feast with friends and
family. Homes are cleaned
and decorated with bright
earthen lamps in every cor-
ner, and delicious meals are
prepared and shared with all.
Old accounts are closed, and
arguments are settled.
On a more personal level,
however, Diwali is a time to
turn inward and light the
lamps of knowledge and
truthinourheartsandminds
so that we can dispel the forc-
es of darkness and ignorance
within us and allow our in-
nate brilliance and goodness
to shine forth.
As part of the festivities,
ensure that these stories are
toldandretoldtochildrenand
grandchildren. Keep the reli-
gious and spiritual power of
Deepawali alive through re-
membrance. The spiritual
power behind the Deepawali
traditions is important and
one must empower self and
othersthroughremembrance.
Happy Deepawali!

the forces of darkness and
ignorance within us and
allow our innate brilliance
and goodness to shine forth.
As part of the festivities,
ensure that these stories are
told and retold to children
and grandchildren.
In its own way, Diwali
demonstrates how
ancient tales in epics
become part of religious
practice. There are many
stories around what
exactly Diwali
commemorates and why
it is celebrated. The
festival celebrates defeat
of evil demon king
Ravana by Rama—an
incarnation of God
Vishnu and the hero of

THEFESTIVALOFLIGHTS
ndia, being a land of different cultures and religions coexisting together harmoniously, offers a list of joyful festivals
that keep Indians grooving to the tunes of celebrations throughout the year. Each month bestows a festival upon the
people of India among which Diwali or Deepavali is the most popular one. Every Indian welcomes the divine
festival of Diwali with open arms. Irrespective of different cultures and backgrounds, the nation comes together on
this auspicious day. It is one of the popular Indian festivals of the year that is celebrated with lights, gifts, rangolis, joy,
and laughter. Although the essence of the festival stays the same across the country, Diwali traditions and activities vary
from state to state. Let’s look at these few unique and interesting Diwali traditions followed in various parts of the nation.
I
Varanasi observes the Diwali of
Gods, known as the Dev Deepawali.
Devotees believe that Gods and
Goddesses come down to earth to
take a dip in the holi Ganga during
this time. Prayers and diyas are of-
fered to river Ganga and the banks,
adorned with lamps and rangolis
look profoundly mesmerising. Dev
Deepawali falls on the full moon of
the Kartika month and takes place
fifteen days after Diwali.
In Punjab, Diwali falls around
the same time of Bandi Chhor
Diwas, a Sikh festival celebrated
with lighting up of households
and gurudwaras, gifting,
bursting crackers and feasting.
Punjabi Hindus worship God-
dess Lakshmi on Diwali. The
celebration of Diwali also marks
the arrival of winters in Punjab.
The people of Himachal Pradesh
observes Diwali in a traditional
way. As per the Hindu mythol-
ogy, the festival of Diwali was
celebrated for the first time
when Lord Rama along with his
wife, Sita, and brother, Laxman
returned to his home land Ayo-
dhya after 14 years of exile. So,
the takes from the Ramayana
are narrated and enacted in the
form of play during Diwali in
Himachal Pradesh.
In Goa, Diwali is dedicated to
Lord Krishna destroying the
demon Narkasur. Mammoth
effigies of the demon are made
and burnt down on the dawn of
Narakasura Chaturdashi, a day
before Diwali. During Diwali,
many people in Goa and parts of
South India smear coconut oil
on their bodies to free them-
selves of sin.
Diwali in Bengal coincides with Kali
Puja or Shyama Puja that takes place
at night. Goddess Kali is decked up
with hibiscus flowers and worshipped
in temples and households. Devotees
also offer sweets, lentils, rice and fish
to Ma Kali. Temples in Kolkata like Dak-
shineshwar and Kalighat are famous
for Kali Puja. Also, the night before
Kali Puja, Bengalis follow the Bhoot
Chaturdashi ritual to overcome the evil
power by lighting up 14 diyas at home.
In places like Barasat near Kolkata,
Kali Puja takes place in a manner as
grandiose as Durga Puja, with themed
pandals and melas. In front of the Kali
pandals, one will also notice figures of
demons Dakini and Yogini.
The people of Tamil Nadu celebrates
Diwali a day before it’s observed by the
North Indians. The rituals of Diwali in
Tamil Nadu includes an oil bath for the
whole family. Houses are beautifully
decorated with Kolam (rangoli) and clay
lamps. People take an oil bath before
sitting for the Diwali puja.
Diwali in Maharashtra commenc-
es with the Vasu Baras ritual that
takes place to honour cows. Peo-
ple celebrate Dhanteras to pay
homage to the ancient doctor,
Dhanvantari. On the occasion of
Diwali, Maharashtrians worship
Goddess Lakshmi and observe
Diwali Cha Padva, celebrating the
love of husband and wife. The
celebrations end with Bhav Bij
and Tusli Vivah that marks the
starting of weddings.
For Gujaratis, the festival of Diwali
marks the beginning of a new year
and they call it Bestu Varas or New
Year’s Day. However, the rituals re-
main the same as followed in North
India. From decorating the house
with rangolis, colorful lights, and
diyas. The celebration is followed
by Bhai Bij where sisters apply a
tilak on their brother’s forehead
and vow to protect their brothers
against all evils.

In Odisha, on the
occasion of Diwali,
people perform Kau-
riya Kathi. It is a ritual
in which people wor-
ship their ancestors
in heaven. They burn
jute sticks to call upon
their ancestors and
seek their blessings.
During Diwali, Odias
worship Goddess Lak-
shmi, Lord Ganesha
and Goddess Kali.
These are only a few of the spectacular ways of
celebrating Diwali in the nooks and crannies of
India. This year, we will miss the enthusiasm of
the festival to some extent due to the COVID-19
pandemic. But we can definitely stay in our homes
and spend some quality time with our families. On
that note, Happy Diwali to one and all.

TOP TWEETS WHO’S DIWALI GIFT TO INDIA: COVAXIN GETS APPROVAL BUT AFTER LONG WAIT etting World Health Organisation’s ap- proval for India’s in- digenouslydeveloped Covaxin had become a prestige issue for the govern- ment as the global health body kept delaying its nod. The reason it said was insufficient data pro- vided by Bharat Biotech, the de- veloper, and awaited a report from its technical experts. All this while India kept administer- ing Covaxin to the people as it was in desperate need of jabs. Bharat Biotech also said that it was working with WHO for the emergency use authentication for Covaxin and was hopeful of an early approval. Finally, the approval for the vaccine’s emergency use came on the eve of Diwali and its time for double celebration. It is a per- fect Diwali gift after WHO’s Technical Advisory Group and Strategic Group of Experts con- cluded that Covaxin’s efficacy outweighs the risks. This will pave the way for other countries, including those from the Euro- pean Union, to recognise Covax- in and lift travel restrictions on Indians who have taken the jab. G A DIWALI BUSTLING WITH HOPE PROSPERITY! eepawali is arguably the most important festival of India and Hindus worldwide. After last year’s of ‘coronic’ lustreless and lightless festi- val, this year it has brought a ‘ray of hope’ and expecta- tions! Deepawali visibly im- pacts the nation, from the religious, social, political to the economic, from the mac- ro government to the micro- individual. We have seen record GST collections for October, the beginning of a demand- boosting festive season, came in at Rs 1.30 lakh crore, com- pared with Rs 1.17 lakh crore in September. October GST collections were not only the second highest for the fiscal year, but the second-highest monthly collections since the introduction of the nation- wide tax in 2017. In fact, the four legs of eco- nomic growth that is private consumption, government expenditure, private invest- ment and net exports, are re- sponding to the festive sea- son and catching up, at their won pace. Post the Covid-19 pandemic, the Indian econo- my is showing signs of bouncing back which is be- ing aided greatly by the fes- tive season. On another level, we have laws and rules with arguments flowing back and forth about pollution, green crackers and more. TheDiwalifestivalsinclude Dhantrayodashi, Narak Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali), Lakshmi Puja (Diwali), Go- vardhan Puja, and Bhaiyya Dooj. Diwali has a varied rel- evance to each person, but what remains common about the festival is the fact that it brings joy , peace and happi- ness. This is perhaps the only occasion where everyone comes together without inhi- bition.Itisalsoamongthefew Indian festivals where people of all faiths come together in celebration. Diwali has a deep rooted tradition and is very rich in significance. What has perhaps made Diwali as spe- cialasitistodayisthefactthat its genesis has been traced back to as far as the treta yug. In its own way , that Diwali demonstrates how ancient tales in epics become part of religious practice. There are many stories around what exactly Diwali commemo- rates and why it is celebrated. The festival celebrates the defeat of the evil demon king RavanabyRama–anincarna- tionof theGodVishnuandthe heroof Ramayanaepic.Rama- yana still holds a power over each Hindu, even the so-called atheistsinitsstoryandtheles- sons therein. It is victory of good over evil and even the most deep-rooted metaphor we can find spiritual solace. In a later age, the festival commemorates the defeat of the demon Narakasura by Lord Krishna. Like Rama, Krishna is an incarnation of the god Vishnu, who has come to assist humanity in its time of need. Other traditions associate the festival with the birth of the goddess Lakshmi and her marriage to Vishnu. In the Hindu tradition, Lakshmi is worshipped as the goddess of wealth, while Vishnu is seen as the preserver of humanity . In southern India, we cel- ebrate the defeat of the de- mon Hiranyakshipu by Nar- asimha, the lion-headed in- carnation of Vishnu. The Diwali tradition is cel- ebrated by Jains and Sikhs as well, who have their own in- terpretations of the festival. For Jains, Diwali celebrates the nirvana, or enlighten- ment, of Mahavira, the 24th spiritual teacher of the Jain path and the contemporary tradition’s founder. Sikhs consider Diwali a commemorationof therelease of Guru Hargobind, the sixth of 10 spiritual leaders, and 52 other men who were impris- oned by the Mughal Empire thatruledtheIndiansubconti- nent from 1526 to 1857. The diverse origin stories of Diwali are a reinforce- ment of our belief system that good will necessarily tri- umph over the evils of de- mons, injustice and igno- rance. It historically symbol- izes the victory of good over evil and celebrates light and life on both community and personal levels. On the one hand, it is a time to rejoice and feast with friends and family. Homes are cleaned and decorated with bright earthen lamps in every cor- ner, and delicious meals are prepared and shared with all. Old accounts are closed, and arguments are settled. On a more personal level, however, Diwali is a time to turn inward and light the lamps of knowledge and truthinourheartsandminds so that we can dispel the forc- es of darkness and ignorance within us and allow our in- nate brilliance and goodness to shine forth. As part of the festivities, ensure that these stories are toldandretoldtochildrenand grandchildren. Keep the reli- gious and spiritual power of Deepawali alive through re- membrance. TALKING POINT JAIPUR | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2021 08 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epaper/ I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia HOWANDWHERETOBESTENJOY THEFESTIVALOFLIGHTS ndia, being a land of different cultures and religions coexisting together harmoniously, offers a list of joyful festivals that keep Indians grooving to the tunes of celebrations throughout the year. Each month bestows a festival upon the people of India among which Diwali or Deepavali is the most popular one. Every Indian welcomes the divine festival of Diwali with open arms. Irrespective of different cultures and backgrounds, the nation comes together on this auspicious day. It is one of the popular Indian festivals of the year that is celebrated with lights, gifts, rangolis, joy, and laughter. Although the essence of the festival stays the same across the country, Diwali traditions and activities vary from state to state. Let’s look at these few unique and interesting Diwali traditions followed in various parts of the nation. I Varanasi observes the Diwali of Gods, known as the Dev Deepawali. Devotees believe that Gods and Goddesses come down to earth to take a dip in the holi Ganga during this time. Prayers and diyas are of- fered to river Ganga and the banks, adorned with lamps and rangolis look profoundly mesmerising. Dev Deepawali falls on the full moon of the Kartika month and takes place fifteen days after Diwali. In Punjab, Diwali falls around the same time of Bandi Chhor Diwas, a Sikh festival celebrated with lighting up of households and gurudwaras, gifting, bursting crackers and feasting. Punjabi Hindus worship God- dess Lakshmi on Diwali. The celebration of Diwali also marks the arrival of winters in Punjab. The people of Himachal Pradesh observes Diwali in a traditional way. As per the Hindu mythol- ogy, the festival of Diwali was celebrated for the first time when Lord Rama along with his wife, Sita, and brother, Laxman returned to his home land Ayo- dhya after 14 years of exile. So, the takes from the Ramayana are narrated and enacted in the form of play during Diwali in Himachal Pradesh. In Goa, Diwali is dedicated to Lord Krishna destroying the demon Narkasur. Mammoth effigies of the demon are made and burnt down on the dawn of Narakasura Chaturdashi, a day before Diwali. During Diwali, many people in Goa and parts of South India smear coconut oil on their bodies to free them- selves of sin. Diwali in Bengal coincides with Kali Puja or Shyama Puja that takes place at night. Goddess Kali is decked up with hibiscus flowers and worshipped in temples and households. Devotees also offer sweets, lentils, rice and fish to Ma Kali. Temples in Kolkata like Dak- shineshwar and Kalighat are famous for Kali Puja. Also, the night before Kali Puja, Bengalis follow the Bhoot Chaturdashi ritual to overcome the evil power by lighting up 14 diyas at home. In places like Barasat near Kolkata, Kali Puja takes place in a manner as grandiose as Durga Puja, with themed pandals and melas. In front of the Kali pandals, one will also notice figures of demons Dakini and Yogini. The people of Tamil Nadu celebrates Diwali a day before it’s observed by the North Indians. The rituals of Diwali in Tamil Nadu includes an oil bath for the whole family. Houses are beautifully decorated with Kolam (rangoli) and clay lamps. People take an oil bath before sitting for the Diwali puja. Diwali in Maharashtra commenc- es with the Vasu Baras ritual that takes place to honour cows. Peo- ple celebrate Dhanteras to pay homage to the ancient doctor, Dhanvantari. On the occasion of Diwali, Maharashtrians worship Goddess Lakshmi and observe Diwali Cha Padva, celebrating the love of husband and wife. The celebrations end with Bhav Bij and Tusli Vivah that marks the starting of weddings. For Gujaratis, the festival of Diwali marks the beginning of a new year and they call it Bestu Varas or New Year’s Day. However, the rituals re- main the same as followed in North India. From decorating the house with rangolis, colorful lights, and diyas. The celebration is followed by Bhai Bij where sisters apply a tilak on their brother’s forehead and vow to protect their brothers against all evils. VARANASI PUNJAB HIMACHAL GOA BENGAL TAMIL NADU ODISHA MAHARASHTRA GUJARAT In Odisha, on the occasion of Diwali, people perform Kau- riya Kathi. It is a ritual in which people wor- ship their ancestors in heaven. They burn jute sticks to call upon their ancestors and seek their blessings. During Diwali, Odias worship Goddess Lak- shmi, Lord Ganesha and Goddess Kali. These are only a few of the spectacular ways of celebrating Diwali in the nooks and crannies of India. This year, we will miss the enthusiasm of the festival to some extent due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But we can definitely stay in our homes and spend some quality time with our families. On that note, Happy Diwali to one and all.

Within hours, the matter swelled be- yond repair and al- though the correction was made, by the time, damage had been done. The matter pertains to Jhunjhunu Collec- tor Umar Deen Khan. On October 28, Collec- tor Khan issued orders regarding Diwali cele- brations and imposed prohibitory orders (section 144) from No- vember 1 to November 6 in the entire district. Additionally, playing religious songs and ‘Jayakara’ was also banned. The Jhunj- hunu police even circu- lated the order on the net and soon it went viral on social media. As it went viral, com- ments and remarks started pouring against the order and the order was seen as a ‘fatwa’ against Hindu by a Muslim Collector. There were all manner of comments on the or- der to the tune that one person wrote, “What did not happen in Mughal rule, is now happening under Ashok Gehlot’s govern- ment.” Another person wrote, “Tughlaqi ideol- ogy .” While another said that it was a conspira- cy to destroy Hindu fes- tivals. In fact, several news channels also played the public’s re- sponse. In nearby Gujarat, the local media picked up the order and termed the Ashok Ge- hlot government ‘Anti- Hindu’ while the BJP held several protests. Finally, when the situation went out of hand, Collector was given a good verbal bashing from ‘Jaipur’ and it was then that UD Khan realised his mis- take. Thereafter, on Oc- tober 30, the Collector issued corrected or- ders and the parts of the order that hurt the sentiments of Hindus were removed. According to highly placed sources, on the basis of the Home de- partment’s guidelines, all the Collectors is- sued orders related to Law and Order for Di- wali. However, the Jhunj- hunu Collector went a step further and added the controversial points on his own whims. Khan, who is nearing the retirement age, has become Collec- tor for the first time and it is learnt that the order was formed by ADM JP Gour, which the Collector signed without even checking. Collector Umar Deen Khan’s lack of going through the order proved dearly to the state government and the Gehlot government was painted in bad light. ‘Irresponsible’ Collector’s doing costs state govt its credibility! This Diwali let us promise ourselves to be there for each other and understand that we all need to stand by each other for life to have any meaning. Co- rona took a lot from us but also gave valuable lessons. For every 10 di- yas that we light- let us donate one for someone whose life is in dark- ness. For every box of sweets bought, let us keep a piece aside for the one whose life is bit- ter. For every green cracker bought to burst today, let us add sparkle to one underprivileged life! Tarun shares, “The very essence of Diwali is what governs our world especially right now. Everybody was anticipating the arrival of Ram, Seeta, and Laxman after four- teen years, and the dark night was lit with the presence of diyas and lanterns. Ram Darbar, therefore is a source of celebration for us. Hence, Deepawali became one of the biggest festivals in India.” Looking at the images, one may perceive that the local calendar image of Ram Darbar has been depicted through the photoshoot. Tarun further adds, “The artists who have been a part of this pho- toshoot, have kept in mind the minute details to give importance to the ancient values. Little things like jewellery and mukut have been curated from various cities, for example, the mukut is a very old Himachali tribal design which is rarely seen nowadays, the only flowers that are used are Lotus, the only light that is used is that of di- yas.
