KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM HEARING
Mumbai: Maharashtra min-
ister Aaditya Thackeray on
Monday threw another dare
at rebel Shiv Sena leaders to
“come face to face” and tell
him what they feel is wrong.
Led by his father Uddhav, govt
and party are facing a mutiny by Shinde’s fac-
tion, which has around 40 of 55 Sena MLAs.
Mumbai: Maha CM Uddhav
Thackeray, who is facing
a massive mutiny in Sena
ranks, has stripped 9 rebel
ministers of their portfolios.
Among these 9 are 5 cabinet
mins and 4 MoS. Responsi-
bilities have been redistributed so that “public
welfare work did not stall”, an order said.
A core committee meeting of Maha
BJP was held at the residence of
Devendra Fadnavis, to discuss
the present political situation in
state. BJP’s Sudhir Mungantiwar
said a core team will meet once
again and take a decision in the
interest of the people of Maha.
Mumbai: Sena’s Sanjay Raut, among
most vociferous backers of Maha
CM Uddhav amid a
revolt in party, has
been summoned by
ED in Mumbai for
questioning today
in a case of alleged
money laundering.
Raut, a RS member, responded with
charge that “this is a conspiracy to
stop me”. Team Thackeray has been
saying that mutiny led by Shinde is a
result of “pressure of ED, CBI” under
BJP-led central government.

AAP ATTACKS BJP
CENTRE SHAMELESSLY USING ED
AGAINST OPPOSITION: GOPAL RAI
Nation is heading towards one-party rule, says Delhi Environment Minister
New Delhi (PTI): Sen-
ior AAP leader Gopal
Rai on Monday alleged
the Centre is “shame-
lessly” misusing the
Enforcement Directo-
rate against opposi-
tion parties that dare
to raise their voice
against the BJP,
and said it seems
the nation is heading
towards one-party
rule.
It’s not a secret any-
more and it’s not about
one or two opposition
parties.
The central govern-
ment is now misusing
the ED against all the
parties that dare to
speak against the BJP,
Rai told reporters here
while responding to a
query on Delhi minis-
ter Satyendar Jain’s
judicial custody in an
alleged money laun-
dering case.
“Central agencies
were misused earlier
too. But now they are
being misused openly
and brazenly. I think
it’s the beginning of a
new era in India. The
nation is heading to-
wards a one-party
rule,” he said.
Be it Jain, Congress
leader Rahul Gandhi
or Shiv Sena spokes-
person Sanjay Raut.
The names do not even
matter anymore. This
is an act against the
country’s constitution-
al principles, Rai
claimed.
A special CBI court
on Monday refused to
extend the judicial
custody of Delhi min-
ister Satyendar Jain in
the alleged case.
The ED on Monday
summoned Shiv Sena
leader Raut in an al-
leged money launder-
ing case of 2018. Gan-
dhi was recently

dering case related to

HAS ‘HIGH HANDEDNESS’ IN MANAGING
PARTY AFFAIRS HIT THACKERAYS?
Mahesh Sharma
Mumbai: After the po-
litical developments in
Maharashtra, there
have been several re-
ports that the Chief
Minister knew for
months that prepara-
tions for a rebellion
were being made in his
party. NCP supremo
Sharad Pawar was quot-
ed as saying that he had
told Uddhav Thackeray
a month ago that all is
not well inside Shiv
Sena and he should fix
his house. Journalists
also say that there was a
CID report that Eknath
Shinde is angry and he
is uniting the MLAs.
The question is that
when everyone had the
news and Chief Minis-
ter Uddhav Thackeray
also knew, then why
were the disgruntled lot
‘managed’ in time? One
reason for this is being
told the working style of
the Thackeray family
. In
front of the Thackeray
family, the status of a
party leader is not more
than that of a peon.
Meanwhile, Uddhav
Thackeray’s health was
deteriorating, due to
which he stayed away
from his leaders.
Also a big reason is
that Shiv Sena has no
manager. Before Maha
Vikas Aghadi was
formed or Uddhav
Thackeray became the
Chief Minister, Sharad
Pawar was managing
the affairs from behind
the curtain. Even later,
Pawar’s management
continued to work in
maintaining the coali-
tion government. For
the first time there was
a crisis in the Shiv Sena
and it went out of con-
trol because in the last
two decades, the Shiv
Sena did not find any
manager. Its top leader,
the Thackeray family,
believed that no Shiv
Sainik could even think
of being a rebel. In the
Bal Thackeray era, Shiv
Sena had leaders like
Manohar Joshi,
Chhagan Bhujbal and
NarayanRanewhowere
also popular and also ex-
pert in management.
After the departure of
Bhujbal and Rane, there
is just Sanjay Raut left,
but he is also the leader
and spokesperson who
merely makes state-
ments and is not a ‘man-
ager’. Aaditya Thacker-
ay was believed to be
able to handle the man-
agement but the arro-
gance and feeling of be-
ing Bal Thackeray’s
grandson keeps him
away from party leaders
and workers.

that democratic values are being

the kind of democracy the youth
should sustain and strengthen.
With authoritarian democracies
emerging, democracy has ac-
quired a new meaning which is
different from the one contained
in Magna Carta, providing for
individual rights and liberties.
Russia is believed to be a demo-

A Freedom House report said
that democracy is in a crisis
with the deterioration in politi-

pecially those of minorities,
globally. The report said that
even the United States “retreat-

because the West has blocked

ing double-digit inflation and
severe economic contraction,
this may not bother much.
The debt repayment de-
fault is much due to the West
as Russia has enough funds
to repay its debt and service
interest thereon. Western
countries who presumed that
they would be able to arm-
twist Russia with sanctions
must be realizing their poor
estimation of Russia which

any further involvement.
To top it all, Ukraine’s mem-

A LOT OF DRAMA LIES
AHEAD IN MAHARASHTRA
The BJP is winning, and NCP is waiting for Sena’s suicidal step so that it emerges unscathed
F
If the BJP can’t forget the early
morning swearing-in of
Devendra Fadnavis and his
exit in the next few hours, the
Sena would never forgive the
BJP for the present round of
humiliation. The longer the
stalemate continues, both inside
Assembly and out in courts, the
more it would benefit the anti-
Sena forces. Even the BJP may
also want that situation to
linger on – Shinde is
expendable, after all, the real
fight is with the Thackerays.
Then BJP has Raj Thackeray
as well. MNS chief is craving to
hit back at his cousin for his
own insult 17 years ago
or now, the ultimate victor in
Maharashtra politics has
been the BJP. It should be al-
lowed to hold some sort of a
medal for finally defeating
theShivSenaatitsowngame.
After Raj Thackeray’s exit
from the Sena in 2006 – post
two other previous revolts –
and Eknath Shinde’s current
round of chicanery, Shiv
Sena must be shedding copi-
ous tears. As ex-CM Deven-
dra Fadnavis counts the days
of the MVA government, Ud-
dhav Thackeray looks for
some reassuring observa-
tions from SC. The BJP has
attained its first objective of
shaking the foundation of the
three-way ruling alliance of
Shiv Sena, NCP
, and the Con-
gress, without having to show
its hand in the Shiv Sena’s
“intraparty” affairs.
Of the two Hindutva cous-
ins – the BJP and Shiv Sena
– the latter has been more vi-
cious in its tactic. From be-
ing a champion of the ‘son of
the soil’ and Maratha pride,
it successfully graduated to
project itself as the spokes-
person for the Hindus. It re-
mained beholden to Balasa-
heb Thackeray who took full
advantage of the politics of
opportunism of the Congress
and created a ‘larger than
life’ image of himself.
On the contrary, the BJP
has had a one-point agenda:
‘Congress-mukt Bharat’. By
that, it wants to uproot all
that has even shades of Con-
gress in it – good or bad – in
the name of shedding ad-
hocism.Thepartyremainson
the lookout for Shinde’s and
suchlike. It cleverly separates
Congress from those with
only ambition to chase, such
as Hardik Patel. It makes a
case for itself as a product of
victimhood. It has succeeded
because for people, every
shining rhetoric is worth its
weight in gold to be expended
tobuymoreof it.TheBJPhas
plenty of unspent rhetoric,
the Congress has none and
regional parties are too busy
with their own regional aspi-
rations; look at the non-Hindi
political landscape.
Sharad Pawar didn’t go off
the tangent when he learnt of
the Shinde episode for the
first time. He reportedly
asked:“Didn’ttheyhavesome
intel about it?” An aging Pa-
warhashadlimitations–ever
since he left Sonia Gandhi
way back in 1999 to float his
own NCP. For him, BJP was
hardly to blame as much as
Shiv Sena, which has com-
plained several times of NCP
expanding its base at the cost
of Shiv Sena. Therefore, Pa-
war might have removed an
irritant in the MVA dispensa-
tion. Yet, the question is
which Shiv Sena we are talk-
ing about – the new one led by
Shinde or the original care-
taker Uddhav. The NCP objec-
tive right now is to delay the
MVA fall. Given that the Su-
preme Court has come into
the picture and soon the mat-
ter will land up in the high
court, Pawar has ensured the
NCP remains unscathed and
that the entire blame for the
MVA collapse – if it comes to
that – should shift to the Sena.
One fact that has emerged
from a changing India is the
rise of intense competitive
politics, where politicians of
all hues want things done
asap. The positive part of it is
restless voters stay engaged,
but the negative is it gives
rise to vendetta politics.
The current Sena episode
has its roots in the period of
Covid-induced lockdown. It is
fairlywellknownthatthepan-
demic increased the commu-
nication gap between Uddhav
and his MLAs, especially
those with rural background.
The Shiv Sena remained fo-
cused on Mumbai and the
politics of cash-rich Brihan-
mumbai Municipal Corpora-
tion (BMC). Eknath Shinde,
theThanestrongman,wasthe
onetowhomallMLAscongre-

ing neglected with the rise of
Aaditya Thackeray and San-
jay Raut. Shinde struck when
his route to Surat and Guwa-
hati became clear as most of
his loyal MLAs from rural ar-
eas were ready to go with him.
We must accept we are past
political correctness and mo-
rality in the relentless battle
for supremacy of political
forces. If the BJP can’t forget

Mumbai: How did for-
mer Maharashtra Chief
Minister Devendra Fad-
navis suddenly become
so powerful that he is
challenging and even
defeating the govern-
ment and seems to be
reaching the chief min-
ister’s chair for the
third time? That per-
haps is the biggest ques-
tion in the current po-
litical clime of the na-
tion. In the Rajya Sabha
elections, he made the
third BJP candidate
win by juggling five to
six votes. After that,
Fadnavis defeated Ma-
havikas Aghadi by chal-
lenging it in the Legisla-
tive Council elections.
He had announced after
the Rajya Sabha elec-
tions that he would give
a bigger blow in the
election of the Legisla-
tive Council and proved
his word as he garnered
20 additional votes to
win the fifth seat in the
Legislative Council.
In this, only three
MLAs of Shiv Sena en-
gaged in cross-voting,
but now more than a
dozen of its MLAs have
turned rebel. Informed
sources say that the re-
bel leaders of Shiv Sena
had told Fadnavis that
they would support him
if he wins the fifth seat
in the Legislative Coun-
cil on his own. Fadnavis
won the fifth seat with-
out the help of the rebel
Shiv Sena MLAs. Apart
from three MLAs each
from Shiv Sena and
Congress, he also added
MLAs of 15 independ-
ents and smaller par-
ties, who were support-
ing the Mahavikas
Aghadi government till
now. It was only after
this that Eknath Shinde
and other MLAs got the
courage to revolt.
So the question is,
who is helping Fadnavis
in this whole campaign?
According to informed
sources, he is getting di-
rect or indirect help
from Sharad Pawar or
Ajit Pawar, because
Maha Vikas Aghadi has
a huge majority in the
state and till some time
ago the entire command
was in the hands of the
ruling coalition. Some
time back Sharad Pa-
war had met Prime Min-
ister Narendra Modi. It
was then said that they
had gone to talk about
the action being taken
against their leaders
and the pending names
of the nominated mem-
bers in the Legislative
Council.
But it was only after
that meeting that the
equation started chang-
ing in Maharashtra.
The command has
passed from the hands
of the ruling coalition
to the hands of Fad-
navis. Till some time
back, Fadnavis seemed
isolated even in his own
party but now he has
emerged as the most
powerful leader in Ma-
harashtra. He won an
additional seat each in
both the Rajya Sabha
and the Legislative
Council. First he gave a
blow to Shiv Sena and
then to Congress. Pa-
war’s party NCP did not
suffer in both the elec-
tions and now after the
rebellion within Shiv
Sena, the possibility of
him becoming the Chief
Minister is visible.
Who helped Fadnavis in the ‘political rupture’ in Maharashtra?

New Delhi (Agen-

entry barriers for
gig and platform
workers will lead to
surge in the num-
ber of such workers
in India to 23.5 mil-
lion by 2029-30 as
against 7.7 million
in 2020-21, NITI
Aayog said in its re-
port on Monday
.
The Aayog, in its
report has urged
the government to
ensure universal
social security cov-
erage to platform
workers while rec-
ommending indus-
try to provide them
with sick leave,
health cover and ac-
cidental insurance
cover as is preva-
lent in other coun-
tries.
“The gig work-
force is expected to
expand to 23.5 mil-
lion workers by
2029-30 as against
7.7 million in 2020-
21. They would
form 6.7% of the
non-agricultural
workforce or 4.1%
of the total liveli-
hood in India by
2029-30,” the Aayog
said, calling the
numbers indicative.
In 2020-21, gig workers
constituted 2.6% of
the non-agricultural
workforce or
1.5% of the
total work-

‘CIL up to meet its part of coal
supplies to power sector’
CIL chairman said the state-owned firm is braced up to complete its commitment
New Delhi (PTI): As
monsoon has hit many
parts of the country,
Coal India chairman
Pramod Agrawal said
the state-owned firm is
braced up to meet its
part of committed coal
supplies to the power
sector in the coming
months, and stressed
that building up dry
fuel stock timely by
electricity generating
plants will be crucial.
People in many parts
of the country faced
power outages at the
beginning of the sum-
mer season this year
due to the shortage of
coal supplies at various
thermal plants.
“Timely stock build-
up by the power plants
when coal is available
will be crucial. We are
gearing up to meet our
part of committed sup-
plies to power sector in
the ensuing months,”
Agrawal said.
Stating that the com-
pany is targeting to
close the first quarter
with 35 million tonnes
(MTs) incremental pro-
duction compared to
same quarter of last
year, he said that the
company’s output tem-
po is progressing in
this direction.
“We will not spare
any effort in pushing
up the output and off
take,” he added.
Terming the recent
coal shortages as “mis-
nomer”, Agrawal said
that CIL pitheads are
stocked with around 46
MT of coal, whereas
coal stock at power
plants stands at around
24 MT. This apart, a lit-
tle over six MT is lying
at goods sheds, private
washeries, ports and
CIL’s sidings awaiting
transportation to pow-
er plants end.
CIL aims to supply
565 MT to power sector
during FY23 and the
company’s efforts are
oriented to meet this.
FTAs to open new
oppsforexporters
Tiruppur (PTI): The
proposed free trade
agreements (FTAs),
including with the UK,
European Union and
GCC would open new
opportunities to boost
India’s exports in
these markets, FIEO
President A Sakthivel
said here. FIEO also
said the government
initiatives are help-
ing the country re-
cord a healthy growth
rate in exports.
“Ongoing negotia-
tions with the UK,
the EU, GCC, etc will
throw open new op-
portunities for Indi-
an exporters,” Sak-
thivel said.
The GCC was estab-
lished in 1981 and its
six members are the
United Arab Emirates,
Saudi Arabia, Qatar,
Oman, Kuwait and
Bahrain. India is ac-
tively negotiating
FTAs with these coun-
tries and blocs. The
European Union (EU)
team is in New Delhi
to hold negotiations
with Indian officials
on the proposed bilat-
eral trade and invest-
ment agreement.
On June 17, India
and the EU formally
resumed negotiations
on the proposed agree-
ment, after a gap of
over eight years.
Indian banks to
witness surge in
margins:Moody’s
New Delhi (Agen-
cies): Indian banks
might witness growth
in net interest margins
(NIMs) in the current
financial year (FY23),
revealed a report by
Moody’s Investor Ser-
vice on Monday. NIM is
the difference between
the interest income
earned and the interest
paid by a bank to its
interest-earning assets.
The widening of these
margins can be attrib-
uted to recent interest
rate hikes undertaken
by the Reserve Bank of
India (RBI) in order to
tame inflation. In addi-
tion to that, higher
policy rates and favora-
ble funding structures
might also contribute
to the larger margins,
the report said.

around 79-80/$ in near term: Experts
New Delhi (PTI): In-
dia’s rupee is likely to
remain under pressure
due to high prices of
crude oil and other
commodities, and may
stabilise at around 79-
80 against the US dollar
in the near term, say
experts amid limited
headroom available
with the RBI to check
the weakening of the
domestic currency
.
The currency has
slumped over 5% this
year after Russia’s in-
vasion of Ukraine sent
international crude oil
prices soaring to a dec-
ade high. On Monday,
rupee ended at a fresh
all-time low of 78.34
(provisional) against
the US dollar.
Commenting on the
rupee movement,
Ranen Banerjee,
Leader, Economic Ad-
visory Services, PwC
India, said the de-
mand for dollars is go-
ing up owing to In-
dia’s rising value of
imports and FII (For-
eign Institutional In-
vestments) outflows.
“We are likely to see
the exchange rate in
the range of 77.5 to
79.5 depending on the
movement of oil pric-
es and other commod-
ity prices.”
Aditi Nayar, Chief
Economist at ICRA,
said the policy tighten-
ing by the US Federal
Reserve amid the risk
aversion environment
is expected to strength-
en the US dollar, there-
by imparting a depreci-
ating bias to the INR
against the USD.
“...A run-up in crude
oil prices from current
levels poses a risk to
the INR. Amidst the
global headwinds, we
expect the INR to trade
between 77.0-80.0/$in
the remainder of H1
FY2023,” she said.

‘Persistentinflation
to impact demand’
New Delhi (PTI): The
current operating en-
vironment remains
highly volatile and
persistent inflation
will likely impact de-
mand across catego-
ries, Tata Consumer
Products Ltd Chair-
man N Chan-
drasekaran said on
Monday. To navigate
through these “short-
term bumps” in this
uncertain environ-
ment, the company
will focus on strong
execution, maintain-
ing agility and nimble-
ness,” he said.
“Geo-Political ten-
sions, supply chain
challenges, and de-
mand-supply mis-
matches in crude and
several other commod-
ities are driving per-
sistent inflation,
which will likely im-
pact demand across
categories.
“In this uncertain
environment, we will
continue to focus on
strong execution,
maintaining agility
and nimbleness to
adapt and navigate
through short-term
bumps; and more im-
portantly to take ad-
vantage of opportuni-
ties that could arise
during this period,”
said Chandrasekaran.
Terming the FY21
as a “very eventful
one”,Chandrasekaran
said challenges posed
by the pandemic and
more recently, geo-po-
litical developments
have resulted in a very
volatile macro-envi-
ronment with a wide-
ranging impact on
people, economies,
and businesses.

achieve a $5 trillion

“Small businesses
need to improve
their management
skills and make
their technology
base smart. In re-
cent years online
markets have devel-
oped through e-com-
merce which has
had a positive im-
pact on MSMEs.
“MSME can gen-
erate higher profits
through e-com-
merce. It will in-
crease revenue and
margin, extend
reach to new mar-
kets, help them save
marketing expenses
and customers will
get a better experi-
ence,” Verma said.
He said that after
the pandemic wave,
the MSME sector
has been standing
firmly.
“There is develop-
ment happening in
MSME space and it
can be seen across
the country. Main
reason for this is
progressing changes
in our public poli-
cies,” the minister
said. He said that
there were neither
masks nor sanitizers
when the corona pe-
riod started in India.

promote natural farming in state
First India Bureau
Chandigarh: Haryana
Chief Minister Mano-

taken another initiative
in the direction of mak-

per Prime Minister
Narendra Modi’s vision
to promote natural
farming in the state, by
announcing subsidy of
up to Rs 25,000 on the
purchase of indige-

vide four big drums to
the farmers to prepare
the solution of Jeevam-

free of cost.
Haryana will be the
first state in the coun-

The Chief Minister
said that the basic ob-
jective of natural
farming is to change
the eating habits, for
this we have to adopt
the concept of food and
medicine.
Natural farming is
the only way out. A tar-
get has been set to pro-
mote natural farming
on 50,000 acres of land
in the state and in or-
der to make people
aware about it, an exhi-

NATO to increase size of

Brussels (AP): NATO
secretary general Jens
Stoltenberg said on
Monday that the mili-
tary alliance will in-
crease the size of its
rapid reaction forces
nearly eightfold to
300,000 troops as part of
its response to an era of
strategic competition.”
The NATO response
force currently has
about 40,000 soldiers
which can deploy
quickly when needed.
Coupled with other
measures including the
deployment of forces to
defend specific allies,
Stoltenberg said the
move is part of the big-
gest overhaul of collec-
tive defense and deter-
rence since the Cold
War.”
Stoltenberg made the
remarks at a press con-
ference ahead of a
NATO summit later
this week in Madrid
when the 30 allies are
expected to also agree
on further support to
Ukraine in its war
against Russia.
Stoltenberg said he
expects allies to make
clear they consider Rus-
sia as the most signifi-
cant and direct threat to
our security
.”
In NATO’s new stra-
tegic concept, the alli-
ance is also expected to
address for the first
time the security chal-
lenges posed by China,
Stoltenberg said. In Ma-
drid, allies will discuss
how to respond to the
growing influence of
Russia and China in
their southern neigh-
borhood,” he added.
Stoltenberg said al-
lies will agree to deliver
further military sup-
port to Ukraine when
they convene in Spain,
with NATO members
set to adopt a strength-
ened comprehensive as-
sistance package, in-
cluding deliveries of
secure communication
and anti-drone systems.

Most of the children
died in Paktika’s hard-

has trickled into the
provinces on precarious

Mahesh Sharma Mumbai: After the po- litical developments in Maharashtra, there have been several re- ports that the Chief Minister knew for months that prepara- tions for a rebellion were being made in his party. NCP supremo Sharad Pawar was quot- ed as saying that he had told Uddhav Thackeray a month ago that all is not well inside Shiv Sena and he should fix his house. Journalists also say that there was a CID report that Eknath Shinde is angry and he is uniting the MLAs. The question is that when everyone had the news and Chief Minis- ter Uddhav Thackeray also knew, then why were the disgruntled lot ‘managed’ in time? One reason for this is being told the working style of the Thackeray family . In front of the Thackeray family, the status of a party leader is not more than that of a peon. Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackeray’s health was deteriorating, due to which he stayed away from his leaders. Also a big reason is that Shiv Sena has no manager. Before Maha Vikas Aghadi was formed or Uddhav Thackeray became the Chief Minister, Sharad Pawar was managing the affairs from behind the curtain. Even later, Pawar’s management continued to work in maintaining the coali- tion government. For the first time there was a crisis in the Shiv Sena and it went out of con- trol because in the last two decades, the Shiv Sena did not find any manager. Its top leader, the Thackeray family, believed that no Shiv Sainik could even think of being a rebel. In the Bal Thackeray era, Shiv Sena had leaders like Manohar Joshi, Chhagan Bhujbal and NarayanRanewhowere also popular and also ex- pert in management. After the departure of Bhujbal and Rane, there is just Sanjay Raut left, but he is also the leader and spokesperson who merely makes state- ments and is not a ‘man- ager’. Aaditya Thacker- ay was believed to be able to handle the man- agement but the arro- gance and feeling of be- ing Bal Thackeray’s grandson keeps him away from party leaders and workers. Pannerselvam or OPS as he is known, added that meetings could be convened only with the approval of both coordinator and co-coordinator. This comes amid the battle for single leadership in the AIADMK between former Tamil Nadu chief minister and par- ty co-coordinator Edap- padi K Palaniswami (EPS) and his former deputy CM and coordi- nator O Panneerseve- lam (OPS). In a statement, OPS, who is the treasurer of the party said that since as a coordinator of the AIADMK he had not given any approval to the meeting and in such a case if the meeting is convened, it will be in violation of the rule.Ac- cordingly, any meeting must be convened with the consent of both par- ties. In the end it boils down to the kind of democracy the youth should sustain and strengthen. With authoritarian democracies emerging, democracy has ac- quired a new meaning which is different from the one contained in Magna Carta, providing for individual rights and liberties. Russia is believed to be a demo- cratic country but is it? A Freedom House report said that democracy is in a crisis with the deterioration in politi- cal rights and civil liberties, es- pecially those of minorities, globally. The report said that even the United States “retreat- ed from its role… as a champion and exemplar of democracy”. Indian democracy is also said to be under threat. The political costsof invadingUkrainefour monthsbackareyettobeseen, except that for the first time since 2018 Russia has default- ed on foreign debt repayment because the West has blocked payment routes of its credi- tors. To Russians who are fac- ing double-digit inflation and severe economic contraction, this may not bother much. The debt repayment de- fault is much due to the West as Russia has enough funds to repay its debt and service interest thereon. Western countries who presumed that they would be able to arm- twist Russia with sanctions must be realizing their poor estimation of Russia which continues to pound and gain territory in Ukraine. West- ern arms supplies are still not enough for Ukraine to take on its mighty neighbour which is playing coy about any further involvement. To top it all, Ukraine’s mem- bershipof theEuropeanUnion is yet to come through. Presi- dent Zelensky applied for the EU on February 28, 2022 with the request that it should be processedundera“newspecial procedure”. The longer the stalemate continues, both inside Assembly and out in courts, the more it would benefit the anti- Sena forces. Even the BJP may also want that situation to linger on – Shinde is expendable, after all, the real fight is with the Thackerays. Then BJP has Raj Thackeray as well. MNS chief is craving to hit back at his cousin for his own insult 17 years ago or now, the ultimate victor in Maharashtra politics has been the BJP. It should be al- lowed to hold some sort of a medal for finally defeating theShivSenaatitsowngame. After Raj Thackeray’s exit from the Sena in 2006 – post two other previous revolts – and Eknath Shinde’s current round of chicanery, Shiv Sena must be shedding copi- ous tears. As ex-CM Deven- dra Fadnavis counts the days of the MVA government, Ud- dhav Thackeray looks for some reassuring observa- tions from SC. The BJP has attained its first objective of shaking the foundation of the three-way ruling alliance of Shiv Sena, NCP , and the Con- gress, without having to show its hand in the Shiv Sena’s “intraparty” affairs. Of the two Hindutva cous- ins – the BJP and Shiv Sena – the latter has been more vi- cious in its tactic. From be- ing a champion of the ‘son of the soil’ and Maratha pride, it successfully graduated to project itself as the spokes- person for the Hindus. It re- mained beholden to Balasa- heb Thackeray who took full advantage of the politics of opportunism of the Congress and created a ‘larger than life’ image of himself. On the contrary, the BJP has had a one-point agenda: ‘Congress-mukt Bharat’. By that, it wants to uproot all that has even shades of Con- gress in it – good or bad – in the name of shedding ad- hocism.Thepartyremainson the lookout for Shinde’s and suchlike. It cleverly separates Congress from those with only ambition to chase, such as Hardik Patel. It makes a case for itself as a product of victimhood. It has succeeded because for people, every shining rhetoric is worth its weight in gold to be expended tobuymoreof it.TheBJPhas plenty of unspent rhetoric, the Congress has none and regional parties are too busy with their own regional aspi- rations; look at the non-Hindi political landscape. Sharad Pawar didn’t go off the tangent when he learnt of the Shinde episode for the first time. He reportedly asked:“Didn’ttheyhavesome intel about it?” An aging Pa- warhashadlimitations–ever since he left Sonia Gandhi way back in 1999 to float his own NCP. For him, BJP was hardly to blame as much as Shiv Sena, which has com- plained several times of NCP expanding its base at the cost of Shiv Sena. Therefore, Pa- war might have removed an irritant in the MVA dispensa- tion. Yet, the question is which Shiv Sena we are talk- ing about – the new one led by Shinde or the original care- taker Uddhav. The NCP objec- tive right now is to delay the MVA fall. Given that the Su- preme Court has come into the picture and soon the mat- ter will land up in the high court, Pawar has ensured the NCP remains unscathed and that the entire blame for the MVA collapse – if it comes to that – should shift to the Sena. One fact that has emerged from a changing India is the rise of intense competitive politics, where politicians of all hues want things done asap. The positive part of it is restless voters stay engaged, but the negative is it gives rise to vendetta politics. The current Sena episode has its roots in the period of Covid-induced lockdown. It is fairlywellknownthatthepan- demic increased the commu- nication gap between Uddhav and his MLAs, especially those with rural background. The Shiv Sena remained fo- cused on Mumbai and the politics of cash-rich Brihan- mumbai Municipal Corpora- tion (BMC). Shinde struck when his route to Surat and Guwa- hati became clear as most of his loyal MLAs from rural ar- eas were ready to go with him. We must accept we are past political correctness and mo- rality in the relentless battle for supremacy of political forces. That per- haps is the biggest ques- tion in the current po- litical clime of the na- tion. In the Rajya Sabha elections, he made the third BJP candidate win by juggling five to six votes. After that, Fadnavis defeated Ma- havikas Aghadi by chal- lenging it in the Legisla- tive Council elections. He had announced after the Rajya Sabha elec- tions that he would give a bigger blow in the election of the Legisla- tive Council and proved his word as he garnered 20 additional votes to win the fifth seat in the Legislative Council. In this, only three MLAs of Shiv Sena en- gaged in cross-voting, but now more than a dozen of its MLAs have turned rebel. Informed sources say that the re- bel leaders of Shiv Sena had told Fadnavis that they would support him if he wins the fifth seat in the Legislative Coun- cil on his own. Fadnavis won the fifth seat with- out the help of the rebel Shiv Sena MLAs. Apart from three MLAs each from Shiv Sena and Congress, he also added MLAs of 15 independ- ents and smaller par- ties, who were support- ing the Mahavikas Aghadi government till now. It was only after this that Eknath Shinde and other MLAs got the courage to revolt. So the question is, who is helping Fadnavis in this whole campaign? According to informed sources, he is getting di- rect or indirect help from Sharad Pawar or Ajit Pawar, because Maha Vikas Aghadi has a huge majority in the state and till some time ago the entire command was in the hands of the ruling coalition. Some time back Sharad Pa- war had met Prime Min- ister Narendra Modi. It was then said that they had gone to talk about the action being taken against their leaders and the pending names of the nominated mem- bers in the Legislative Council. But it was only after that meeting that the equation started chang- ing in Maharashtra. The command has passed from the hands of the ruling coalition to the hands of Fad- navis. Till some time back, Fadnavis seemed isolated even in his own party but now he has emerged as the most powerful leader in Ma- harashtra. He won an additional seat each in both the Rajya Sabha and the Legislative Council. First he gave a blow to Shiv Sena and then to Congress. Pa- war’s party NCP did not suffer in both the elec- tions and now after the rebellion within Shiv Sena, the possibility of him becoming the Chief Minister is visible. Who helped Fadnavis in the ‘political rupture’ in Maharashtra? Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. People in many parts of the country faced power outages at the beginning of the sum- mer season this year due to the shortage of coal supplies at various thermal plants. “Timely stock build- up by the power plants when coal is available will be crucial. We are gearing up to meet our part of committed sup- plies to power sector in the ensuing months,” Agrawal said. Stating that the com- pany is targeting to close the first quarter with 35 million tonnes (MTs) incremental pro- duction compared to same quarter of last year, he said that the company’s output tem- po is progressing in this direction. “We will not spare any effort in pushing up the output and off take,” he added. Terming the recent coal shortages as “mis- nomer”, Agrawal said that CIL pitheads are stocked with around 46 MT of coal, whereas coal stock at power plants stands at around 24 MT. This apart, a lit- tle over six MT is lying at goods sheds, private washeries, ports and CIL’s sidings awaiting transportation to pow- er plants end. CIL aims to supply 565 MT to power sector during FY23 and the company’s efforts are oriented to meet this. Indian banks to witness surge in margins:Moody’s New Delhi (Agen- cies): Indian banks might witness growth in net interest margins (NIMs) in the current financial year (FY23), revealed a report by Moody’s Investor Ser- vice on Monday. NIM is the difference between the interest income earned and the interest paid by a bank to its interest-earning assets. The widening of these margins can be attrib- uted to recent interest rate hikes undertaken by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in order to tame inflation. In addi- tion to that, higher policy rates and favora- ble funding structures might also contribute to the larger margins, the report said.
