For BJP leaders,mum’s the word!
Renni Abraham
Mumbai: BJP leader
and ex-Finance Minis-
ter of Maharashtra Su-
dhir Mungantiwar told
the media that the po-
litical party’s core com-
mittee meeting held in
Mumbai on Monday
had decided to wait and
watch, adding that his
party had no role to
play in the ongoing re-
bellion of Sena MLAs.
While this is far from
the truth, Munganti-
war was only following
the express orders of
BJP’s Maharashtra
boss Devendra Fad-
navis, who has forbid-
den his minions from
disclosing any alter-
nate facts to points he
specified at the meet-
ing.
“At the meeting, Fad-
navis said the BJP’s po-
litical strategy would
be announced in two to
three days. He said he
was in contact with the
party high command
about the strategy to be
followed until then and
directed all those pre-
sent to desist from mak-
ing any statements on
the issue,” a person
close to the develop-
ment told First India.
The former CM told
BJP leaders to limit
their conversations
with the media to five
parameters while
maintaining total si-
lence on the party’s
strategy and making no
comment except to say
that the BJP has had no
role to play in the cur-
rent imbroglio.
The BJP has also
communicated to the
Eknath Shinde-led re-
bel faction to consist-
ently cite the Congress
and especially the Na-
tionalist Congress Par-
ty (NCP) as being re-
sponsible for inequita-
ble disbursement of
development funds, and
lament that repeated
follow-ups with both
the Sena high com-
mand and NCP have
been in vain.
The Shinde faction
has further been told to
keep emphasizing that
they have not received
any funding from the
BJP, even as they revolt-
ed “in order to save the
Shiv Sena party’s As-
titva (continued exist-
ence) in Maharashtra’s
politics”.
The BJP will try to
emphasize that while
their party has tall
leaders like Narendra
Modi and Amit Shah to
mentor, guide and offer
advice to rectify their
grievances, the Sena
lacked the same redres-
sal mechanism.
In a strategic move
the Sena rebels, who
moved the Supreme
Court, also submitted
the entire video of San-
jay Raut’s reprehensi-
ble comments on the
record. The Sena MP
and spokesperson Raut
was forced to offer a re-
action stating that he
had only made a politi-
cal statement. The BJP
is pinning its hopes on
the apex court pulling
up Raut and summon-
ing him in the case
which would be a ma-
jor political victory in
the ongoing battle for
Maharashtra as well as
the final nail in Raut’s
coffin.

Guwahati: Rebel Shiv
Sena leader Eknath
Shinde on Tuesday
said he would soon re-
turn to Mumbai, and
rubbished the Sena’s
claim that as many as
20 MLAs from his fac-
tion are in touch with
the Uddhav Thacker-
ay-led party.
Speaking to reporters
outside the hotel where
he and his group of
MLAs have been camp-
ing since last week,
Shinde also said he has
the support of 50 MLAs.
“All these MLAs have
come here on their own
and to take forward
Hindutva,” he said said.
“Some people from
that side are claiming
that some MLAs here
are in touch with them.
If it is the case, then
they should reveal their
names,” he added.
“Our stand is clear...
to take forward the Shiv
Sena, as dreamt of by
late Balasaheb Thack-
eray. We will continue
to toe the line of his
Hindutva,” he said.
Shinde said Sena
MLA Deepak Kesarkar
will be speaking to me-
dia on behalf of the re-
bel legislators and brief
reporters about their
next steps.
“No need to worry
about the MLAs here.
All the MLAs are happy
and fine. Nobody is here
for any personal bene-
fit,” he said.
Since landing in As-
sam’s Guwahati city,
Shinde has most of the
time remained indoors.
On Tuesday, he came
out of the hotel with a
couple of his close as-
sociates to make the
brief statement.

Mumbai: Slamming
the rebel Shiv Sena
MLAs’ claim that
their fight was to pro-
tect the party’s Hin-
dutva moorings, Sena
MP Sanjay Raut on
Tuesday said more
than half of them
were earlier with the
Nationalist Congress
Party (NCP).
Many rebel MLAs as
well as their leader and
senior minister Eknath
Shinde have said that
they did not approve of
Sena chief Uddhav
Thackeray’s decision to
sever the ties with the
like-minded Bhaartiya
Janata Party (BJP) and
join hands with the
NCP and Congress.
Speaking at a public
rally at Alibag near
Mumbai, Raut said,
“The rebel MLAs sup-
porting Eknath Shinde
are saying their cause is
to protect the Hindutva
envisaged by party
founder Balasaheb
Thackeray
. Twenty-two
of them have come from
theNationalistCongress
Party
. What Hindutva
they are talking about?
Those who opposed Bal-
asahebThackerayended
up ruining their own ca-
reer,” he said.
As per the Shinde fac-
tion, which is camping
in Guwahati, it has the
support of 40 of 55 Sena
MLAs.
Raut also called the
party MLA from Alibag,
Mahendra Dalvi, who
has joined the Shinde
camp, a “bullock”.
Mumbai (PTI):
Against the back-
drop of the cur-
rent political situ-
ation, Mumbai Po-
lice Commissioner
Sanjay Pandey on
Tuesday evening
chaired a meeting
with a group of
BJP MLAs, offi-
cials said.
At least three sit-
ting MLAs and a
former legislator at-
tended the meeting
in which Pandey
discussed main-
taining the law and
order in the city,
they said.
MLA Mihir Kote-
cha (Mulund), Parag
Shah (Ghatkopar

(Vile Parle) and for-
mer MLA Atul Shah
attended the meet.

ward incident in

Mumbai (PTI): NCP
Member of Parlia-
ment Supriya Sule on
Tuesday lamented
that anyone who
shows dissent nowa-
days gets an Enforce-
ment Directorate
(ED) notice and main-
tained that law en-
forcement agencies
should be completely
independent as they
do very serious work.
The Lok Sabha MP
from Baramati in Pune
district was replying to
a query about the ED
summoning Shiv Sena
MP Sanjay Raut in con-
nection with a money
laundering probe.
Talking to reporters,
shequippedthat,nobody
knew about the ED, but
now even people from
villages know about the
law enforcement agency
tasked with fighting eco-
nomic crimes as its no-
tices are being served as
if they are ‘khairat’ (do-
nation).
“The work of en-
forcement agencies is
very serious. They
should be independent.
Anyone who shows dis-
sent, gets an ED notice
and this is reflected in
data, so it is unfortu-
nate,” she added.

Aurangabad: Ramesh
Bornare, rebel Shiv
Sena MLA from Vai-
japur in Aurangabad
district, on Tuesday
said that he stood
firmly with Eknath
Shinde, who has re-
volted against Chief
Minister Uddhav
Thackeray. He reiter-
ated that he knew
that the Thane strong-
man “won’t let any-
thing bad happen to
us”.
Attacking the present
leadership of the party,
Bornare said it should
introspect on why “51
MLAs” have joined
Shinde, a number that
is yet to be verified.
Talking about a cote-
rie in the party, he
claimed, “People
around Chief Minister
Uddhav Thackeray do
not allow me to meet
him. Leaders like San-
jay Raut have used ob-
jectionable language
against us. However, we
know Shinde won’t let
anything bad happen to
us.”
“My stand is final
and Eknath Shinde is
my leader. My constitu-
ency got funds of Rs400
crore from various
(Maha Vikas Aghadi)
departments in the past
two-and-a-half years
due to my skills and the
help given by Shinde,”
Bornare said.
He said the Sena
MLAs, including him-
self, were elected in the
2019 Assembly polls
while the party was in
alliance with the
Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP), adding that he
had decided to go ahead
on the path of Hindutva
asw “I felt bad sitting
with those (Congress
and Nationalist Con-
gress Party) who we
had defeated”.
“I have taken this de-
cision (of joining Shin-
de) for the development
of my constituency
. I do
not intend to stay MLA
for long, but want peo-
ple to remember me for
the development work I
do in my tenure. The
Shiv Sena (leadership)
should introspect why
such a large number of
MLAs are now with
Shinde,” he said.

Mumbai: Amid spec-
ulation that the rebel
group of MLAs—cur-
rently holed up in a
Guwahati hotel—
could meet Governor
Bhagat Singh Koshy-
ari in a day or two,
Shiv Sena President
Uddhav Thackeray
made yet another
gesture to bring
them back into fold.
The leader wishes to
sit across the table
and discuss their
grievances.
Stating that several
MLAs camping in the
hotel still considered
themselves part of Shiv
Sena, Thackeray said,
“Many of you are stuck
in Guwahati for the last
few days. Everyday new
information about you
is emerging. Many of
you have also contacted
us and said you still
consider yourself a
part of the Shiv Sena.
Family members of
several MLAs also con-
veyed how you feel. As
the head of the Shiv
Sena family, I respect
your feelings and would
like to sincerely tell you
that there is still time to
mend fences. I appeal to
all of you to come and
sit in front of me, and
remove the uncertain-
ties in the minds of
Shiv Sainiks.”
Thackeray’s appeal
came after Shiv Sena
leaders Aaditya Thack-
eray and Sanjay Raut
sharpened the attack on
rebel MLAs and issued
veiled threats to them.
“I am confident that
we can find a way out of
this. Let us all sit to-
gether and find a solu-
tion. Please do not fall
for false promises made
to you. No other party
can give you the respect
and dignity you re-
ceived in the Shiv Sena.
If you come and speak
your mind, a solution
could be found. I am
concerned about all of
you as party president
and head of the Shiv
Sena family,” he said.
The statement came
soon after Sena’s strong
denial of news reports
that Thackeray had tele-
phonedBharatiyaJanata
Party (BJP) leader Dev-
endra Fadnavis to save
the Maha Vikas Aghadi
government from a col-
lapse. “There is no truth
in these reports. Ud-
dhavji(CMThackeray)is
known to always speak
openly and forthrightly
,”
said a Shiv Sena spokes-
person.
Responding to Thack-
eray’s appeal, Eknath
Shinde tweeted, “On
one hand, his son and
spokesperson refers to

Sainiks as pigs, garbage
from the nullah, bulls,
dogs, soulless corpses,
on the other hand, ap-
peals for peace are
made to the same MLAs
to save the ‘anti-Hindu’

19 KILLED, 14 INJURED
as building collapses in Kurla
First India Bureau
Mumbai: Nineteen
people were killed
and 14 others injured
after a four-storey
building collapsed in
the Kurla area of
Mumbai around mid-
night, said civic offi-
cials on Tuesday.
A wing of the build-
ing located in Naik Na-
gar society collapsed,
while another wing was
evacuated as it too is
dilapidated, said offi-
cials of the Brihan-
mumbai Municipal
Corporation (BMC).
Search and rescue op-
erations were underway
post the collapse. As per
a senior official, resi-
dents of the building
had been repeatedly
warned about the condi-
tion of the building, but
they insisted on staying
there.
As many as 33 people
have been rescued from
the debris since mid-
night. Ten of them were
declared dead, four
were admitted in hospi-
tals, and nine were dis-
charged from hospitals
after treatment, an of-
ficial said.
Doctors at the BMC-
run Rajawadi Hospital
declared Kishor Praja-
pati (20), Sikandar Ra-
jbhar (21), Arvind Ra-
jendra Bharati (19),
Anup Rajbhar (18), Anil
Yadav (21) and Shyamu
Prajapati (18) as
‘brought dead’ around 3
pm, he added. The num-
ber later rose as search
and rescue operations
continued.
A woman who was
trapped under the de-
bris was rescued by a
team of the National
Disaster Response
Force (NDRF). Rescuers
cheered when she was
brought out alive.
When a BMC fire bri-
gade team first reached
the spot, locals in-
formed said that 20-22
people were trapped
under the debris.
Around a dozen fire en-
gines were deployed
besides two rescue vans
and other equipment.
Besides the fire brigade
and two NDRF teams,
BMC officials and po-
lice were also involved
in the search and res-
cue operation.
The BMC had issued
notices to the building
repeatedly since 2013
under the Mumbai Mu-
nicipal Corporation
Act, initially for re-
pairs and then for va-
cating it and demoli-
tion, Additional Mu-
nicipal Commissioner
Ashwini Bhide said.

BMC says final no to PoP idols for Ganesh festival

From next year, there

As per the guidelines,
those found selling PoP
idols will face fine and
judicial action.
The Central Pollution

SCAMSTERS TARGET SOCIAL MEDIA
USERS BY POSING AS POLICE OFFICIALS

with axe over
property strife
Nagpur: In yet another
shocking incident, a
man allegedly killed his
in-laws with an axe after
a dispute over property
in Nagpur. The incident
reportedly took place on
Sunday in Nagpur’s Amar
Nagar area. Police have
identified the accused as
Narmu Seeta Yadav (40),
who was a driver. As per
reports, the accused also
allegedly tried to strangle
his wife Kalpana (40) on
Saturday night.

27-YEAR-OLD MAN ARRESTED FOR
MURDERING WIFE OVER ‘AFFAIR’
Mumbai: Scamsters are now targeting social media
users posing as police commissioners. Some peo-
ple have approached the police, complaining that
they received calls from people claiming to be sen-
ior city cops, who have warned of arrest over some
social media posts. To make the case go away and
avoid arrest, they asked their targets to pay a fine
online. The complainants said the scamsters sent
them a photo of former commissioner of police
(CP) Hemant Nagrale and Joint CP (Mumbai) Vish-
was Nangare Patil.
Nashik: The Ambad police have arrested a 27-year-
old man on the charge of murdering his 22-year-old
wife in the Chunchale area of the Nashik city on
Sunday afternoon. The police detained the accused
from Aurangabad early on Monday before formally
arresting him. Senior PI Bhagirath Deshmukh of
the Ambad police station said, the accused claimed
that he killed his wife over her alleged affair with
their neighbour. On Monday, around 2 am, the
Ambad police received a call from a police station
in Aurangabad stating that a woman was killed in
the Chunchale area of Ambad in Nashik. When the
husband was brought to the Ambad police station,
he confessed to killing his wife by slitting her throat
with a sharp weapon.
CRUCIAL READ
Pune: A youngster celebrating a friend’s birth-
day was allegedly beaten up by locals in Pune’s
Bavdhan area after they thought he was a thief. The
police identified the youngster as Nitesh Deepak
Shelar (19), resident of Shriram Nivas in Bavdhan,
and said that while the incident took place on the
night of June 25, Shelar filed a first information
report (FIR) at the Hinjewadi police station early on
Tuesday. According to the FIR, Shelar was run-
ning behind his friend to apply cake on his face. He
entered the labour camp where people suspected
that Shelar was a thief and attacked him.
ONGC chopper crashes into
Arabian Sea,claims 4 lives
First India Bureau
Mumbai: Four peo-
ple, including three
ONGC employees,
died when a Pawan
Hans helicopter with
two pilots and seven
others onboard fell
into the Arabian Sea
about 50 nautical
miles from the Mum-
bai coast.
The helicopter
managed to stay afloat
with the help of the
attached floaters for
some time, helping
rescuers pull out all
the nine people, a
company official said.
Four of them were
unconsciousandwere
airlifted in a Navy
chopper to a hospital
in Mumbai, where
they were declared
dead, he added.
Earlier, it was re-
ported that six of the
nine persons were
brought to safety and
attempts were on to
rescue others, a com-
pany official said.
The helicopter,
which had six ONGC
personnel onboard,
and one belonging to
a contractor working
for the company, was
forced to land using
the floaters which are
attached to choppers
that carry personnel
and material from
shore to offshore in-
stallations.
The chopper was at-
tempting to land at
the rig, located some
50 nautical miles from
the Mumbai coast,
when the incident
took place. About 1.5
km from the landing
zone on the rig, the
chopper fell into the
sea, the official said.
The circumstances
that led to the incident
were not immediately
clear. Other details too
were awaited, he said.
MahaRERAregistrationofover4,500projectslapsed
First India Bureau
Mumbai: According to
the MahaRERA web-
site, validity of Maha-
RERA registration of
over 4,500 real estate
projects in the state
with over 3,50,000
flats has lapsed.
However, there is no
mechanism to check
whether these projects
are still being marketed,
despite promoters being
prohibited from selling
the flats. In view of this,
experts have advocated
for the establishment of
a special vigilance cell.
“In the past five years,
36,000-odd real estate
projects were registered
and the registration of
about 4,500 or 12%of the
projects have lapsed. It
is estimated that around
`80,000 crore is stuck in
such projects,” advocate
Godfrey Pimenta, who
practises in MahaRE-
RA, said.
“In RERA, there’s a
provision for takeover
of stalled projects by As-
sociation of Allottees or
flat buyers. Last week,
retired IAS officer San-
jay Deshmukh was ap-
pointed to lead a team of
experts to guide on solu-
tions to revive the
stalled projects. It would
be advisable to refer all
cases of stalled projects
under Sections 7 8 of
RERA to this particular
team so that hearings
get priority
,” he added.
Although it is a re-
quirement of RERA for
promoters to facilitate
registration of Associa-
tion of Allottees on
booking of more than
50% flats, only few take
such initiatives.
There is no mechanism
to check whether the
projects are still
being marketed,
despite promoters
being prohibited from
selling the flats.
Mumbai Press Club condemns
Mohammad Zubair’s arrest
First India Bureau
Mumbai: A day after
Mohammad Zubair,
journalist and co-
founder of the fact-
checking website Alt
News, was arrested
by the Delhi police,
the Mumbai Press
Club, on Tuesday,
condemned the move
and demanded Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi and Home Min-
ister Amit Shah’s im-
mediate intervention
in the matter.
In a statement, the
Mumbai Press Club
said, “Zubair should
be released immediate-
ly. We also request
Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi and Home
Minister Amit Shah’s
immediate intervention
in this matter.” Many
other journalists’ or-
ganizations have also
condemned Zubair’s
arrest by the police in
the national capital.
Zubair was arrested
on Monday over a
tweet of 2018 for alleg-
edly hurting religious
sentiments.
Alt News co-founder
Pratik Sinha has al-
leged that Zubair was
arrested in a case for
which no notice was
given by the police,
which is mandatory un-
der law for the sections
under which he has
been held, the Mumbai
Press Club noted in the
statement.
Case was lodged
against the journalist
and co-founder of
factchecker AltNews
earlier this month over
a tweet from 2018.

Africa, the United Kingdom, the
United States of America and
the European Union, affirm our

“hail all courageous defenders
of democratic systems” while
that freedom was being stifled in
several countries. It also boils
down to deciding whose freedom
of expression these democra-
cies will protect.

T
he Sangrur Lok

result has come as
a jolt for the Aam
Aadmi Party but
is no less a concern for the
Central government. The
problem with Simranjit Sin-
gh Mann’s victory from the
Chief Minister Bhagwant
Singh Mann’s constituency is
over his allegiance to Khal-
istani militant Jarnail Singh
Bhindranwale. Simranjit (77)
gave credit for his victory to
the slain militant and vowed
to support the pro-Khalistan
agenda. The radical former
IPS officer’s presence in the
Lok Sabha will be seen as a
boost for the agenda of a sepa-
rate state. He also said he will
raise the issue of “Indian
Army’s atrocities in Kash-
mir” in the House.
It is not the Centre alone
which will have to worry over
this unexpected victory
. That
AAP, which has faced allega-
tionsof itspartychief Arvind
Kejriwal being soft towards
pro-Khalistan elements, has
lost people’s confidence in the
chief minister’s constituency
so early after a resounding
victory in assembly elections

defaulting on promises, main-
ly the one pertaining to job
creation. The unemployment
rate has zoomed from 7.25
percent in April to 9.15 per-
cent in May 2022. Jobless
youth in a border state which
struggled to bring drug men-
ace under some control is a
recipe for disaster. The AAP
government has to take into
account recent incidents trig-
gered by pro-Khalistanis in
view of this political develop-
ment. The AAP government
would have to be forever vigi-
lant against the presence of
militants.
The significant message

fter high drama and three

ing proposed and their subse-
quent denials, when the Op-
position camp at the behest of
WB CM, Mamata Banerjee
finally named Yashwant Sin-
ha for the topmost post of the
country…thebombshellfrom
the otherwise “quiet” NDA
came the same day or is it bet-
ter to say close to midnight.
After a meeting in the na-
tional Capital between PM
NarendraModiandseniorBJP
leaders, Draupadi Murmu’s
name was announced as the
NDA
’s presidential candidate.
Earlier, the “fractured”
Opposition camp had pro-
posed names of Sharad Pa-
war, Farooq Abdullah and
Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson
Gopalkrishna Gandhi for the
top post. But all of them re-
fused as they had doubts
somewhere deep down about
the Opposition’s chances of
getting the numbers.
Astute as a politician that
he is, PM Modi has the ability
to think and think fast and
also in terms of long-term vi-
sion. The selection of former
Jharkhand Governor Drau-
padi Murmu as the NDA’s
presidential nominee, after
the tenure of a Dalit Presi-
dent Ram Nath Kovind ex-
pires next month, is in sync
withPMModi’smasterstroke.
With the BJP already en-
joying 48% of the presiden-
tial votes, its candidate, Drou-
padi Murmu, the 1958-born
and former Governor of
Jharkhand, is almost certain
to win. Hailing from Orissa,
Murmu already has the “sup-
port” of the state’s CM,
Naveen Patnaik who recently
advocated for the “state’s
daughter.” And by virtue of
being the former Governor of
Jharkhand, can Soren shy
away from her candidature?
Earlier, in the article I had
mentioned the term “frac-
tured Opposition” camp, why
I said so was evident from the
fact when BJD, TRS and AAP
had stayed away from the Op-
position meeting to name the
presidential candidate… as it
may be recalled. Even though
TRS on Monday said that it
would support Yashwant
Sinha, AAP has remained
non-committal so far.
CRUCIAL ASSEMBLY
POLLS AHEAD
It may be noted that crucial
Assembly elections are due
in Gujarat and HP in Decem-
ber which will be followed by
MP, Chhattisgarh and Ra-
jasthan and the Saffron party
needs to embolden its im-
print in the tribal regions of
all these States to consolidate
its position especially for the
upcoming LS in 2024.
In the long term, picking a
tribal and a woman from Odi-
sha is a huge gesture to boost
the emotions of eastern India
in the Bigger Picture.
RS WIN FOR BJP
WILL MATTER
The recently concluded RS
elections again proved the
acumen of BJP politicians
and their abiilities to con-
vince smaller, regional par-
ties and Independents to con-
vince them and get votes in
BJP’s favour. This also came
as a shot in the arm for the
Saffron party ahead of the
presidential elections.
Forthepresidentialelection
scheduled on July 18, the NDA
govt is short of the required
majority mark by a little less
than 20,000 votes and thus it is
banking on AIADMK and
friendly parties which may
not even be part of the NDA
such as the BJD and YSRCP
apart from the Independents
and smaller/regional parties.
Saffron party’s strength in
RS will now be 95, including
the Independent. On June 3,
BJP had added 14 members to
its kitty when 41 nominees
across parties were elected to
the Upper House unopposed.
The total value of votes of
all people’s representatives
(that is MPs and MLAs) is
10,86,000andmorethan50per-
cent of the votes are needed to
win the presidential polls.
Currently, I reiterate, the
BJPanditsallieshavearound
48%.Thegrandoldparty
,Con-
gress and its allies have 24%
votes, TMC has 5.4%, Jagan-
mohanReddy’sYSRCongress
has 4% and Naveen Patnaik’s
Biju Janata Dal has about 3%.
If YSR Congress or BJD pulls
the plug on the Opposition
candidate and sides with the
NDA… it will become a cake-
walk for them to win the polls.
It may be recalled that YSR
Congress chief Jaganmohan
Reddy met PM Modi recently
and so did Naveen Patnaik
May 30 and politically if that
is any indication of things to
come in the next few weeks,
the NDA is currently placed
in a better position.

New Delhi: Even for
the sake of exception, it
does not fall in memory,
that if a regional party
has broken up and the
party has passed from
the hands of the found-
ing leader’s family to
another person. Region-
al parties are also bro-
ken but their break is
never too devastating.
Second, the party has
remained within the
family in most cases
since its breakup and
third, no other regional
party formed out of re-
gional parties has been
more successful. Hence
Shiv Sena cannot be im-
agined without Thack-
erays. It is possible that
Shiv Sena may break up
and a large number of
its MLAs and MPs may
go along with Eknath
Shinde but in spite of
that Shiv Sena will re-
main of Thackeray
family. Keep in mind
that Raj Thackeray had
also separated from
Shiv Sena to form Ma-
harashtra Navnirman
Sena but the party did
not succeed, even
though he was a mem-
ber of the Thackeray
family
.
Many parties were
formed after breaking
away from the Congress
and the BJP, some of
which were also suc-
cessful. Similarly, after
the break-up in the so-
cialist camp, many par-
ties were formed and
were successful. But
this is not the case with
regional parties. Parties
formed by a strong sa-
trap do not break and
even if they break, the
separation group ends.
For example, in the
nineties, there was a
major breakdown in the
Jharkhand Mukti Mor-
cha. Krishna Mardi had
formed a separate fac-
tion, but in the very next
election, the party end-
ed. Parkash Singh Bad-
al’s nephew Manpreet
Badal formed the Pun-
jab People’s Party after
breaking away from the
Akali Dal, but the party
ended in the very first
election. After breaking
away from DMK, MK
Alagiri formed a sepa-
rate party but could not
make a dent in the state
politics. Shivpal Yadav
formed the party after
separating from the Sa-
majwadi Party, but
failed.
After the breakup,
some of the parties
which were left in the
hands of someone from
the family became suc-
cessful.LikeinHaryana,
Dushyant Chautala
formedtheJannayakJa-
nata Party after separat-
ing from the Indian Na-
tional Lok Dal and was
successful in the first
elections. Now the main
partyof Chautalafamily
is JJP
. The Telugu Des-
am Party formed by NT
Rama Rao was taken un-
dercontrolbyhisson-in-
lawChandrababuNaidu
and he was also success-
ful. But no person from
outside can usurp par-
tieswhicharecontrolled
by one family
.
Despite being weak,
such parties are bound
by the charisma of the
leader. For example, de-
spite being marginal-
ised, there are many
parties like Rashtriya
Janata Dal in Bihar,
DMK in Tamil Nadu,
JDS in Karnataka, RLD
in Uttar Pradesh, Akali
Dal in Punjab, in which
there was no big break
and the parties sur-
vived. In this, there is a
different example of
Lok Janshakti Party of
Bihar, in which family
members quarreled,
party broke down and
party’s name and elec-
tion symbol was confis-
cated. Despite this, it is
certain that the legacy
of Ram Vilas Paswan
will remain with his
son Chirag Paswan.
Regional parties can’t be battered by breakaway factions!

TO GIVE AGNIVEERS JOBS
Patna (Agencies): The Opposition par-
ties in Bihar have decided to stay away
from the proceedings of the Assembly
after Speaker Vijay Sinha refused to give
them time for a discussion on the Ag-
nipath scheme. The Opposition parties,
including the RJD, CPI, CPM, CPI (ML),
led by Leader of Opposition and RJD
leader Tejashwi Yadav walked out from
the Assembly on Tuesday. They staged
a protest before former CM Karpoori
Thakur’s statue inside the Assembly
premises. Congress and AIMIM leaders
were also not present inside the House.
Kolkata (Agencies): West Bengal Chief
Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday
alleged there is indirect pressure on
her to appoint Agniveers on state gov-
ernment jobs after they complete four
years of service in the armed forces
under the Agnipath scheme. According
to her, such appeals have come to her
from a section of the defence person-
nel. “Recently, I received a letter from
a colonel on this count. He said that he
will forward names of Agniveers from
a panel which might be recruited in the
state government,” she said.

New Delhi: JMM and
Congress leaders run-
ning the government in
Jharkhand have lost
their sleep, due to two
recent political develop-
ments. The first inci-
dent is from Maharash-
tra. There, the Shiv
Sena, which is running
the government out of
the coalition of three
parties, has broken
down and about two-
thirds of its MLAs have
rebelled. If BJP’s ‘Op-
eration Lotus’ is suc-
cessful in Maharashtra,
then this operation will
happen in Jharkhand
too. There is little
chance of break in
JMM running the gov-
ernment in Jharkhand,
but many MLAs of its
ally Congress are al-
ready in touch with BJP
and just as in Maha-
rashtra after two at-
tempts, there could be a
success in the third at-
tempt, in the same way
after two failed at-
tempts in Jharkhand,
there may be a third at-
tempt in the next few
days.
The second event is
BJP’s move to make a
tribal president. The
BJP has nominated
Draupadi Murmu from
the Santhal tribal com-
munity of Odisha, who
was the governor of
Jharkhand, as its presi-
dential candidate and
she is sure to win. With
this one decision, BJP
has changed its image
of being anti-tribal. The
tribal MLAs of
Jharkhand will also
have no problem in go-
ing with the BJP now.
Keep in mind that in the
last election, BJP had
won 25 seats, out of
which only two tribals
won. Later, with the
joining of Babulal Ma-
randi, the number of its
tribal MLAs increased
to three. By making the
first non-tribal chief
minister, the image of
BJP had become anti-
tribal, which will
change now.
That is why the round
of speculation has start-
ed in Jharkhand from
now on. Congress MLAs
had come to Delhi on
Wednesday on the call
of the party high com-
mand, but discussions
started in the state that
they would meet BJP
leaders in Delhi. How-
ever, a situation of ‘Op-
eration Lotus’ not being
successful is being cre-
ated that a by-election is
being held in a seat in
the state, on which there
is a strong possibility of
a Congress victory. If
Congress wins, then its
number of MLAs will
increase and then it will
be a little more difficult
to break two-thirds of
its MLAs.
Jharkhand to also witness ‘Operation Lotus’?

SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BAN

New Delhi (Agen-

gle-use plastic from
July 1.
“Govt has given
enough time to switch
away from single-use
plastic,” the minister
said.
According to the en-
vironment ministry
notification, the manu-
facture, import, stock-
ing, distribution, sale
and use of single-use
plastic, including poly-
styrene and expanded
polystyrene commodi-
ties will be banned
from July 1, 2022.

with plastic sticks,
ice-cream sticks, can-
dy sticks, plastic cups,
plastic glasses, plastic
or PVC banners less

spoons, forks, knives,

Single-use plastic re-
fers to those plastic
items that are used
only once before they
are thrown away
.
For the packaging
industry
, the challenge
is also to search for a
direct alternative to lo-
cally available BOPP
films (polypropylene)
used extensively for
packaging products as
it prevents moisture
and can hold weight
better than a cello-
phane sheet. The noti-
fied list of banned
items also includes
packaging/wrapping
plastic films for sweet
boxes,cigarettepackets
and invitation cards.
According to All In-
dia Plastics Manufac-
turers’ Association
director-general Deep-
ak Ballani, the focus
should also be on step-
ping up action on
proper management
of plastic waste. “We
also want Clean India

sition. But why not fo-
cus on the root of the
problem – plastic
waste,” he says.

Mumbai (PTI): Lower
export demand and a
sharp increase in raw
material and transpor-
tation costs are likely
to result in moderate
operating profitability
for home textile mak-
ers at around 13% in
this financial year, ac-
cording to a report.
“Slowing exports
growth and high cot-
ton prices will hit the
operating margins of
home textile exporters
by 150-200 bps or
around 13% this fiscal.
The rupee’s deprecia-
tion against the dollar
and sustenance of the
China+1 policy by
global buyers will
cushion the hit on
profitability to some
extent,” Crisil Ratings
Senior Director Mohit
Makhija said.
The second half of
this fiscal should grad-
ually restore demand
momentum and mar-
ket share for Indian
home textile exporters
as freight and raw cot-
ton costs moderate, and
ease pressure on profit-
ability, he added.
Exports account for
60-70% of the Indian
home textile indus-

over 58% shipments
are sent to the US.
The report stated
that global demand for
home textiles is expect-
ed to be impacted in the
near-term by inflation-
ary headwinds.
A slowdown in the
sales of key US retail-
ers in the past 3-6
months has led to an
on-year decline of 5-6%
in overall home textile
exports from India be-

price of raw cotton, a

First India Bureau

woman allegedly de-
nied entry into her
house by her
103-year-old mother,
brother and sister-
in-law, has filed a
case under the Do-
mestic Violence Act
against them. This is
one of the rarest
moves in which a
person has filed a do-
mestic violence case
against her mother
and siblings.
Urvashi Kapoor has
filed an FIR against
her mother Sumitra,
brother Vinay and sis-
ter-in-law Nabla for
wrongful restraint,
with Marine Drive po-
lice. It is said to be the
result of a fall out in
the family over a flat
that costs crores of ru-
pees. After being de-
nied entry to her
house, Urvashi was
taken back to a hospi-
tal where she was test-
ed COVID-19 positive.
Namrata, on behalf of
Urvashi, filed a case last
week in the Esplanade
Court under the Protec-
tion of Women from Do-
mesticViolenceAct,2005.
Namrata has lodged
the complaint as nei-
ther she nor her moth-
er were provided resi-
dence, and for return
of streedhan. It is also
for the proceeds of the
sale of the complain-
ant’s mother’s flat,
which was in posses-
sion of the accused,

their regional office in
South Mumbai’s Ballard
Estate area.
The agency wants to
question the 60-year-old
Raut and record his
statement under the Pre-
vention of Money Laun-
dering Act (PMLA).
The development
comes as the Shiv Sena
battles rebellion from a
group of its MLAs, put-
ting a question mark on
the future of Maharash-
tra’s Maha Vikas Agha-
di (MVA) government.
Rebel Shiv Sena legisla-
tors, who were first tak-

camping in Guwahati.
Raut held a press con-
ference in the morning
and said he “will go” to
the ED the moment he
got free.
“I am a lawmaker. I
knowthelaw.Evenif the
law implementing agen-
cies are working in the
wrong way
, I am a law-
abiding person,” he said.
It is understood that
the agency wants to
question Sanjay Raut to

ness and other links”
with Pravin Raut and
Patkar.

Mumbai.
On Monday even-
ing, officials of the

on, the official said.
He will be produced
before a court later in
the day, sources said.
The CBI probe in
the Yes Bank-DHFL
bank fraud case had
brought under the

In April, the ED provi-
sionally attached assets
worth over Rs11.15
crore of Raut’s wife
Varsha Raut and two of
his associates as part
of this investigation.
The attached properties
are in the form of land
held by Pravin M Raut,
Sanjay Raut’s aide and a
former director of Guru
Ashish Construction Pvt
Ltd, at Palghar, Saphale
(town in Palghar) and
Padgha (in Thane dis-

MAHENG/2022/14652 l Vol 1 l Issue No. 54 For BJP leaders, mum’s the word! Renni Abraham Mumbai: BJP leader and ex-Finance Minis- ter of Maharashtra Su- dhir Mungantiwar told the media that the po- litical party’s core com- mittee meeting held in Mumbai on Monday had decided to wait and watch, adding that his party had no role to play in the ongoing re- bellion of Sena MLAs. While this is far from the truth, Munganti- war was only following the express orders of BJP’s Maharashtra boss Devendra Fad- navis, who has forbid- den his minions from disclosing any alter- nate facts to points he specified at the meet- ing. “At the meeting, Fad- navis said the BJP’s po- litical strategy would be announced in two to three days. He said he was in contact with the party high command about the strategy to be followed until then and directed all those pre- sent to desist from mak- ing any statements on the issue,” a person close to the develop- ment told First India. The former CM told BJP leaders to limit their conversations with the media to five parameters while maintaining total si- lence on the party’s strategy and making no comment except to say that the BJP has had no role to play in the cur- rent imbroglio. The BJP has also communicated to the Eknath Shinde-led re- bel faction to consist- ently cite the Congress and especially the Na- tionalist Congress Par- ty (NCP) as being re- sponsible for inequita- ble disbursement of development funds, and lament that repeated follow-ups with both the Sena high com- mand and NCP have been in vain. The Shinde faction has further been told to keep emphasizing that they have not received any funding from the BJP, even as they revolt- ed “in order to save the Shiv Sena party’s As- titva (continued exist- ence) in Maharashtra’s politics”. The BJP will try to emphasize that while their party has tall leaders like Narendra Modi and Amit Shah to mentor, guide and offer advice to rectify their grievances, the Sena lacked the same redres- sal mechanism. In a strategic move the Sena rebels, who moved the Supreme Court, also submitted the entire video of San- jay Raut’s reprehensi- ble comments on the record. The Sena MP and spokesperson Raut was forced to offer a re- action stating that he had only made a politi- cal statement. The BJP is pinning its hopes on the apex court pulling up Raut and summon- ing him in the case which would be a ma- jor political victory in the ongoing battle for Maharashtra as well as the final nail in Raut’s coffin. Ex-CM and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis with Rajya Sabha MP Mahesh Jethmalani at Delhi airport, on Tuesday. —ANI PHOTO Maharashtra BJP boss Fadnavis spells out do’s and don'ts for party leaders and Sena rebels AKASH IS NOW JIO TOP BOSS! CONGRESS TO APPROACH TOP COURT TODAY Amember of the Maha Congress told First India, “It seems clear that BJP intends to brazen it out in a bid to come to power notwithstanding the SC mandated status quo. We will move SC today for clarity on it.” BJP said they have already taken legal opinion on SC status quo. Source said that Sharad Pawar meet with party work- ers, told them “to be prepared to sit in the Opposition.” Rebel MLAs have reacted, claimed that 20 MPs from MVA are in contact with BJP and rebels. Speaking to reporters outside the hotel where he and his group of MLAs have been camp- ing since last week, Shinde also said he has the support of 50 MLAs. “All these MLAs have come here on their own and to take forward Hindutva,” he said said. “Some people from that side are claiming that some MLAs here are in touch with them. If it is the case, then they should reveal their names,” he added. “Our stand is clear... to take forward the Shiv Sena, as dreamt of by late Balasaheb Thack- eray. We will continue to toe the line of his Hindutva,” he said. Shinde said Sena MLA Deepak Kesarkar will be speaking to me- dia on behalf of the re- bel legislators and brief reporters about their next steps. “No need to worry about the MLAs here. All the MLAs are happy and fine. Nobody is here for any personal bene- fit,” he said. Since landing in As- sam’s Guwahati city, Shinde has most of the time remained indoors. On Tuesday, he came out of the hotel with a couple of his close as- sociates to make the brief statement. First India Bureau Mumbai: Slamming the rebel Shiv Sena MLAs’ claim that their fight was to pro- tect the party’s Hin- dutva moorings, Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Tuesday said more than half of them were earlier with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Many rebel MLAs as well as their leader and senior minister Eknath Shinde have said that they did not approve of Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray’s decision to sever the ties with the like-minded Bhaartiya Janata Party (BJP) and join hands with the NCP and Congress. Speaking at a public rally at Alibag near Mumbai, Raut said, “The rebel MLAs sup- porting Eknath Shinde are saying their cause is to protect the Hindutva envisaged by party founder Balasaheb Thackeray . Twenty-two of them have come from theNationalistCongress Party . What Hindutva they are talking about? Those who opposed Bal- asahebThackerayended up ruining their own ca- reer,” he said. As per the Shinde fac- tion, which is camping in Guwahati, it has the support of 40 of 55 Sena MLAs. Raut also called the party MLA from Alibag, Mahendra Dalvi, who has joined the Shinde camp, a “bullock”. Mumbai (PTI): Against the back- drop of the cur- rent political situ- ation, Mumbai Po- lice Commissioner Sanjay Pandey on Tuesday evening chaired a meeting with a group of BJP MLAs, offi- cials said. At least three sit- ting MLAs and a former legislator at- tended the meeting in which Pandey discussed main- taining the law and order in the city, they said. MLA Mihir Kote- cha (Mulund), Parag Shah (Ghatkopar East), Parag Alavani (Vile Parle) and for- mer MLA Atul Shah attended the meet. Mumbai Police are on a high alert to avoid any unto- ward incident in view of protest by Shivsainiks against Eknath Shinde and other rebel MLAs, who are camping in Guwahati. Mumbai (PTI): NCP Member of Parlia- ment Supriya Sule on Tuesday lamented that anyone who shows dissent nowa- days gets an Enforce- ment Directorate (ED) notice and main- tained that law en- forcement agencies should be completely independent as they do very serious work. The Lok Sabha MP from Baramati in Pune district was replying to a query about the ED summoning Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut in con- nection with a money laundering probe. Talking to reporters, shequippedthat, nobody knew about the ED, but now even people from villages know about the law enforcement agency tasked with fighting eco- nomic crimes as its no- tices are being served as if they are ‘khairat’ (do- nation). “The work of en- forcement agencies is very serious. They should be independent. Anyone who shows dis- sent, gets an ED notice and this is reflected in data, so it is unfortu- nate,” she added. First India Bureau Aurangabad: Ramesh Bornare, rebel Shiv Sena MLA from Vai- japur in Aurangabad district, on Tuesday said that he stood firmly with Eknath Shinde, who has re- volted against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. He reiter- ated that he knew that the Thane strong- man “won’t let any- thing bad happen to us”. Attacking the present leadership of the party, Bornare said it should introspect on why “51 MLAs” have joined Shinde, a number that is yet to be verified. Talking about a cote- rie in the party, he claimed, “People around Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray do not allow me to meet him. Leaders like San- jay Raut have used ob- jectionable language against us. However, we know Shinde won’t let anything bad happen to us.” “My stand is final and Eknath Shinde is my leader. My constitu- ency got funds of Rs400 crore from various (Maha Vikas Aghadi) departments in the past two-and-a-half years due to my skills and the help given by Shinde,” Bornare said. He said the Sena MLAs, including him- self, were elected in the 2019 Assembly polls while the party was in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), adding that he had decided to go ahead on the path of Hindutva asw “I felt bad sitting with those (Congress and Nationalist Con- gress Party) who we had defeated”. “I have taken this de- cision (of joining Shin- de) for the development of my constituency . I do not intend to stay MLA for long, but want peo- ple to remember me for the development work I do in my tenure. The leader wishes to sit across the table and discuss their grievances. Stating that several MLAs camping in the hotel still considered themselves part of Shiv Sena, Thackeray said, “Many of you are stuck in Guwahati for the last few days. Everyday new information about you is emerging. Many of you have also contacted us and said you still consider yourself a part of the Shiv Sena. Family members of several MLAs also con- veyed how you feel. As the head of the Shiv Sena family, I respect your feelings and would like to sincerely tell you that there is still time to mend fences. I appeal to all of you to come and sit in front of me, and remove the uncertain- ties in the minds of Shiv Sainiks.” Thackeray’s appeal came after Shiv Sena leaders Aaditya Thack- eray and Sanjay Raut sharpened the attack on rebel MLAs and issued veiled threats to them. “I am confident that we can find a way out of this. Let us all sit to- gether and find a solu- tion. Please do not fall for false promises made to you. No other party can give you the respect and dignity you re- ceived in the Shiv Sena. If you come and speak your mind, a solution could be found. I am concerned about all of you as party president and head of the Shiv Sena family,” he said. The statement came soon after Sena’s strong denial of news reports that Thackeray had tele- phonedBharatiyaJanata Party (BJP) leader Dev- endra Fadnavis to save the Maha Vikas Aghadi government from a col- lapse. “There is no truth in these reports. Ud- dhavji(CMThackeray)is known to always speak openly and forthrightly ,” said a Shiv Sena spokes- person. Responding to Thack- eray’s appeal, Eknath Shinde tweeted, “On one hand, his son and spokesperson refers to Balasaheb’s Shiv Sainiks as pigs, garbage from the nullah, bulls, dogs, soulless corpses, on the other hand, ap- peals for peace are made to the same MLAs to save the ‘anti-Hindu’ MVA government. Search and rescue op- erations were underway post the collapse. As per a senior official, resi- dents of the building had been repeatedly warned about the condi- tion of the building, but they insisted on staying there. As many as 33 people have been rescued from the debris since mid- night. Ten of them were declared dead, four were admitted in hospi- tals, and nine were dis- charged from hospitals after treatment, an of- ficial said. Rescuers cheered when she was brought out alive. When a BMC fire bri- gade team first reached the spot, locals in- formed said that 20-22 people were trapped under the debris. Around a dozen fire en- gines were deployed besides two rescue vans and other equipment. Besides the fire brigade and two NDRF teams, BMC officials and po- lice were also involved in the search and res- cue operation. MahaRERAregistrationofover4,500projectslapsed First India Bureau Mumbai: According to the MahaRERA web- site, validity of Maha- RERA registration of over 4,500 real estate projects in the state with over 3,50,000 flats has lapsed. However, there is no mechanism to check whether these projects are still being marketed, despite promoters being prohibited from selling the flats. In view of this, experts have advocated for the establishment of a special vigilance cell. “In the past five years, 36,000-odd real estate projects were registered and the registration of about 4,500 or 12%of the projects have lapsed. It is estimated that around `80,000 crore is stuck in such projects,” advocate Godfrey Pimenta, who practises in MahaRE- RA, said. “In RERA, there’s a provision for takeover of stalled projects by As- sociation of Allottees or flat buyers. Last week, retired IAS officer San- jay Deshmukh was ap- pointed to lead a team of experts to guide on solu- tions to revive the stalled projects. It would be advisable to refer all cases of stalled projects under Sections 7 8 of RERA to this particular team so that hearings get priority ,” he added. Although it is a re- quirement of RERA for promoters to facilitate registration of Associa- tion of Allottees on booking of more than 50% flats, only few take such initiatives. There is no mechanism to check whether the projects are still being marketed, despite promoters being prohibited from selling the flats. Earlier, in the article I had mentioned the term “frac- tured Opposition” camp, why I said so was evident from the fact when BJD, TRS and AAP had stayed away from the Op- position meeting to name the presidential candidate… as it may be recalled. Even though TRS on Monday said that it would support Yashwant Sinha, AAP has remained non-committal so far. CRUCIAL ASSEMBLY POLLS AHEAD It may be noted that crucial Assembly elections are due in Gujarat and HP in Decem- ber which will be followed by MP, Chhattisgarh and Ra- jasthan and the Saffron party needs to embolden its im- print in the tribal regions of all these States to consolidate its position especially for the upcoming LS in 2024. In the long term, picking a tribal and a woman from Odi- sha is a huge gesture to boost the emotions of eastern India in the Bigger Picture. RS WIN FOR BJP WILL MATTER The recently concluded RS elections again proved the acumen of BJP politicians and their abiilities to con- vince smaller, regional par- ties and Independents to con- vince them and get votes in BJP’s favour. This also came as a shot in the arm for the Saffron party ahead of the presidential elections. Forthepresidentialelection scheduled on July 18, the NDA govt is short of the required majority mark by a little less than 20,000 votes and thus it is banking on AIADMK and friendly parties which may not even be part of the NDA such as the BJD and YSRCP apart from the Independents and smaller/regional parties. Saffron party’s strength in RS will now be 95, including the Independent. On June 3, BJP had added 14 members to its kitty when 41 nominees across parties were elected to the Upper House unopposed. The total value of votes of all people’s representatives (that is MPs and MLAs) is 10,86,000andmorethan50per- cent of the votes are needed to win the presidential polls. Currently, I reiterate, the BJPanditsallieshavearound 48%.Thegrandoldparty ,Con- gress and its allies have 24% votes, TMC has 5.4%, Jagan- mohanReddy’sYSRCongress has 4% and Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal has about 3%. If YSR Congress or BJD pulls the plug on the Opposition candidate and sides with the NDA… it will become a cake- walk for them to win the polls. It may be recalled that YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy met PM Modi recently and so did Naveen Patnaik May 30 and politically if that is any indication of things to come in the next few weeks, the NDA is currently placed in a better position. CHALLENGES OF A MODERN BHARAT Thenewpresidentwillremain inofficetill2027andhencehe/ she will preside over the cru- cial Lok Sabha polls in 2024. The new President will also witness several changes inter- nallyandglobally ,hurdlesand howthecountrybolstersitself from these challenges. It is going to be a very crucial and eventful term with a plethora of bills com- ing his/her way . THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL NOMINATION OF MURMU PM MODI’S ‘PREZ-WORTHY’ MASTERSTROKE A The next half-and-a-decade will also see the ultimate modernisation of the armed forces and the huge digitisation massively across all sectors. To keep in sync with the changes globally it will also be crucial to see how India adopts to its Atmanirbhar status to remain relevant. By the next 5 years, the whole global scenario will undergo a sea change and all those in governance will have to play a crucial role! Region- al parties are also bro- ken but their break is never too devastating. Second, the party has remained within the family in most cases since its breakup and third, no other regional party formed out of re- gional parties has been more successful. Hence Shiv Sena cannot be im- agined without Thack- erays. It is possible that Shiv Sena may break up and a large number of its MLAs and MPs may go along with Eknath Shinde but in spite of that Shiv Sena will re- main of Thackeray family. Keep in mind that Raj Thackeray had also separated from Shiv Sena to form Ma- harashtra Navnirman Sena but the party did not succeed, even though he was a mem- ber of the Thackeray family . Many parties were formed after breaking away from the Congress and the BJP, some of which were also suc- cessful. Similarly, after the break-up in the so- cialist camp, many par- ties were formed and were successful. But this is not the case with regional parties. Parties formed by a strong sa- trap do not break and even if they break, the separation group ends. For example, in the nineties, there was a major breakdown in the Jharkhand Mukti Mor- cha. Krishna Mardi had formed a separate fac- tion, but in the very next election, the party end- ed. Parkash Singh Bad- al’s nephew Manpreet Badal formed the Pun- jab People’s Party after breaking away from the Akali Dal, but the party ended in the very first election. After breaking away from DMK, MK Alagiri formed a sepa- rate party but could not make a dent in the state politics. Shivpal Yadav formed the party after separating from the Sa- majwadi Party, but failed. After the breakup, some of the parties which were left in the hands of someone from the family became suc- cessful.LikeinHaryana, Dushyant Chautala formedtheJannayakJa- nata Party after separat- ing from the Indian Na- tional Lok Dal and was successful in the first elections. Now the main partyof Chautalafamily is JJP . The Telugu Des- am Party formed by NT Rama Rao was taken un- dercontrolbyhisson-in- lawChandrababuNaidu and he was also success- ful. But no person from outside can usurp par- tieswhicharecontrolled by one family . Despite being weak, such parties are bound by the charisma of the leader. For example, de- spite being marginal- ised, there are many parties like Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar, DMK in Tamil Nadu, JDS in Karnataka, RLD in Uttar Pradesh, Akali Dal in Punjab, in which there was no big break and the parties sur- vived. In this, there is a different example of Lok Janshakti Party of Bihar, in which family members quarreled, party broke down and party’s name and elec- tion symbol was confis- cated. Despite this, it is certain that the legacy of Ram Vilas Paswan will remain with his son Chirag Paswan. Regional parties can’t be battered by breakaway factions! Punjab to bring resolution against Agnipath scheme Chandigarh (Agen- cies): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday in- formed the Assembly that the state will soon bring a resolution in the House to oppose the Centre’s Agnipath scheme regarding the defence recruitment. The Opposition parties, including the RJD, CPI, CPM, CPI (ML), led by Leader of Opposition and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav walked out from the Assembly on Tuesday. They staged a protest before former CM Karpoori Thakur’s statue inside the Assembly premises. Congress and AIMIM leaders were also not present inside the House. Kolkata (Agencies): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday alleged there is indirect pressure on her to appoint Agniveers on state gov- ernment jobs after they complete four years of service in the armed forces under the Agnipath scheme. According to her, such appeals have come to her from a section of the defence person- nel. “Recently, I received a letter from a colonel on this count. He said that he will forward names of Agniveers from a panel which might be recruited in the state government,” she said. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann speaks during the Assembly session. Mamata attacks Centre over arrests of Zubair, Teesta Kolkata (Agencies): West Bengal Chief Min- ister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday attacked the BJP over the recent arrests of Alt News co- founder Mohammed Zubair and Mumbai- based social activist Teesta Setalvad. • 7. MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 2022 06 INDIA www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epapers/mumbai I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia Mahesh Sharma New Delhi: JMM and Congress leaders run- ning the government in Jharkhand have lost their sleep, due to two recent political develop- ments. The first inci- dent is from Maharash- tra. There, the Shiv Sena, which is running the government out of the coalition of three parties, has broken down and about two- thirds of its MLAs have rebelled. If BJP’s ‘Op- eration Lotus’ is suc- cessful in Maharashtra, then this operation will happen in Jharkhand too. There is little chance of break in JMM running the gov- ernment in Jharkhand, but many MLAs of its ally Congress are al- ready in touch with BJP and just as in Maha- rashtra after two at- tempts, there could be a success in the third at- tempt, in the same way after two failed at- tempts in Jharkhand, there may be a third at- tempt in the next few days. The second event is BJP’s move to make a tribal president. The BJP has nominated Draupadi Murmu from the Santhal tribal com- munity of Odisha, who was the governor of Jharkhand, as its presi- dential candidate and she is sure to win. With this one decision, BJP has changed its image of being anti-tribal. The tribal MLAs of Jharkhand will also have no problem in go- ing with the BJP now. Keep in mind that in the last election, BJP had won 25 seats, out of which only two tribals won. Later, with the joining of Babulal Ma- randi, the number of its tribal MLAs increased to three. By making the first non-tribal chief minister, the image of BJP had become anti- tribal, which will change now. That is why the round of speculation has start- ed in Jharkhand from now on. Congress MLAs had come to Delhi on Wednesday on the call of the party high com- mand, but discussions started in the state that they would meet BJP leaders in Delhi. How- ever, a situation of ‘Op- eration Lotus’ not being successful is being cre- ated that a by-election is being held in a seat in the state, on which there is a strong possibility of a Congress victory. If Congress wins, then its number of MLAs will increase and then it will be a little more difficult to break two-thirds of its MLAs. Jharkhand to also witness ‘Operation Lotus’? Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Min Amit Shah. SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BAN FROM JULY 1: UNION MIN New Delhi (Agen- cies): Union environ- ment Minister Bhu- pender Yadav an- nounced on June 28 that govt will ban sin- gle-use plastic from July 1. “Govt has given enough time to switch away from single-use plastic,” the minister said. According to the en- vironment ministry notification, the manu- facture, import, stock- ing, distribution, sale and use of single-use plastic, including poly- styrene and expanded polystyrene commodi- ties will be banned from July 1, 2022. Other pro- h i b i t e d items in- clude plastic sticks for balloons, earbuds with plastic sticks, ice-cream sticks, can- dy sticks, plastic cups, plastic glasses, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 microns, stirrers, plastic spoons, forks, knives, and straws. Single-use plastic re- fers to those plastic items that are used only once before they are thrown away . For the packaging industry , the challenge is also to search for a direct alternative to lo- cally available BOPP films (polypropylene) used extensively for packaging products as it prevents moisture and can hold weight better than a cello- phane sheet. The noti- fied list of banned items also includes packaging/wrapping plastic films for sweet boxes, cigarettepackets and invitation cards. According to All In- dia Plastics Manufac- turers’ Association director-general Deep- ak Ballani, the focus should also be on step- ping up action on proper management of plastic waste. “We also want Clean India and are ready to tran- sition. But why not fo- cus on the root of the problem – plastic waste,” he says. The rupee’s deprecia- tion against the dollar and sustenance of the China+1 policy by global buyers will cushion the hit on profitability to some extent,” Crisil Ratings Senior Director Mohit Makhija said. The second half of this fiscal should grad- ually restore demand momentum and mar- ket share for Indian home textile exporters as freight and raw cot- ton costs moderate, and ease pressure on profit- ability, he added. Exports account for 60-70% of the Indian home textile indus- try’s revenue, of which over 58% shipments are sent to the US. A slowdown in the sales of key US retail- ers in the past 3-6 months has led to an on-year decline of 5-6% in overall home textile exports from India be- tween January and April 2022, it noted.
