Johnson becomes first UK PM to visit Sabarmati Ashram
HISTORIC
First India Bureau
Ahmedabad: Visiting
British Prime Minister
Boris Johnson on
Thursday termed Ma-
hatma Gandhi an ex-
traordinary man who
mobilized the princi-
ples of truth and non-
violence to change the
world for the better.
Johnson became the
first prime minister of
the UK to visit the Sa-
barmati Ashram here,
the place from where
Gandhi led India’s
struggle for freedom
from the British colo-
nial rule for more than
a decade.
In fact, the Tory poli-
tician is also the first
British prime minister
to visit Gujarat after
1947.
It is an immense priv-
ilege to come to the ash-
ram of this extraordi-
nary man, and to under-
stand how he mobilized
such simple principles
of truth and non-vio-
lence to change the
world for better, John-
son wrote in the visi-
tors’ book at the Gandhi
ashram.
While the British PM
was effusive in his
praise for the Mahatma,
during the freedom
struggle such praise for
Gandhi from Britain’s
ruling class was rare.
Winston Churchill
famously called Gandhi
a “half-naked fakir” as
the latter opposed send-
ing Indian soldiers to
fight for Britain in the
Second World War and
launched the Quit India
movement in 1942.
The Mahatma’s call
to use the charkha
(spinning wheel) and
boycott foreign goods
including cloth hit the
textile industry in Man-
chester. Charkha be-
came a very potent sym-
bol of the anti-colonial
struggle.
During his visit,
prime minister John-
son tried his hand at the
charkha at Hriday
Kunj, the hut where
Gandhi lived. A replica
of charkha was also
presented to him.

New Delhi (ANI): A
group of Congress lead-

secretary Ajay Maken,
on Thursday, reached
Delhi's Jahangirpuri to
meet the families affect-
ed by yesterday's demo-
lition drive in the area.
The delegation will
submit a report to the
party's interim presi-
dent Sonia Gandhi, said
a member of the
16-member group.
We have come to Ja-
hangirpuri to meet the
victims.Policehavebeen
cooperative. We have
come here to tell the peo-
ple that this should not
be seen from the prism
of religion, Maken told
media persons.
Congress leader Im-
ran Pratapgarhi, a del-
egation member, said,
We will meet the af-
fected families. Later,
we will submit a report
to Sonia Gandhi.
Former Congress
MLA Hari Shankar
Gupta, who arrived at
the site before the dele-
gation, said that permis-
sion for meeting the peo-
ple was sought from the

Condemning the
demolition drive car-
ried out by BJP-ruled

poration of Delhi, Gup-
ta said, They did not
obey the SC's orders.
They shouldn't have
dared to carry on with
the demolition drive in
contempt of the apex
court. In the coming
days, this can set a dan-
gerous precedent.

hi Shakti Sinh Gohil
among others.
Ajay Maken on
Wednesday apologized
for not being able to

visit the site. Sorry for
not being there today,
said Maken.
The visit of the Con-

civic body's demolition
drive unconstitutional.

BULLDOZERS RUN
UNDER GUISE OF
ILLEGAL: MAYAWATI
Lucknow (PTI): BSP presi-
dent Mayawati on Thurs-
day came down heavily
on the use of bulldozers in
Delhi’s violence-hit Jahan-
girpuri area, and said using
religion as a tool in such
exercises can harm mutual
harmony and anti-national
forces can take advantage
of the situation. “Bulldozers
are being run under the
guise of illegal construc-
tion in different states
of the country including
Jahangirpuri in Delhi in
which poor people are also
being affected, whereas the
government should also
take strict action against
officials whose corruption
has led to illegal construc-
tions,” the BSP chief said
in a tweet in Hindi. Several
structures in Jahangir-
puri were razed during an
anti-encroachment drive
conducted by the NDMC.
TMC TO SEND FACT-FINDING TEAM
TO DELHI AFTER VIOLENCE: REPORT
Kolkata (ANI): With the Jahangirpuri violence stirring
the political pot, the Trinamool Congress has decided to
send a fact-finding team to the national capital on Friday,
party sources said. Trinamool MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar
is among the party members in the fact-finding team,
sources said. The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata
Banerjee-led Trinamool has joined the bandwagon of the
Opposition in stepping up the heat on the BJP following
the Jahangirpuri violence and the subsequent demolition
drive carried out by NDMC in the locality on Thursday.
The Trinamool’s move has come in the backdrop of CPM
Politburo member Brinda Karat visiting the area.
5-MEMBER SP DELEGATION TO VISIT
DELHI TO ‘PROBE’ DEMOLITION DRIVE
Lucknow (PTI): A five-member Samajwadi Party delega-
tion will visit Delhi on Friday to “investigate” the NDMC’s
demolition drive in violence-hit Jahangirpuri, they party
said. It said the delegation comprising sitting and former
members of parliament has been formed on the instruc-
tion of party chief Akhilesh Yadav. “BJP-ruled North Delhi
Municipal Corporation destroyed Jahangirpuri with bull-
dozers on April 20. A five-member delegation has been
constituted for its investigation,” chief SP spokesperson
Rajendra Choudhary said Thursday.
WE ARE ON ROAD TO HELL: CHIDAMBARAM ON JAHANGIRPURI
New Delhi (PTI): Senior Congress leader P Chidam-
baram on Thursday attacked the BJP over bulldozers
razing several structures in violence-hit Jahangirpuri
during an anti-encroachment drive, saying “we see
the rule of law break down everyday” and soon there
will be “no law and no rules”. Several concrete and
temporary structures close to a mosque were brought
down on Wednesday morning as part of an anti-
encroachment drive by the BJP-ruled North Delhi Mu-
nicipal Corporation (NDMC), days after the northwest
Delhi neighbourhood was rocked by violence.
TEJASHWI SLAMS CENTRE OVER ‘BULLDOZER CULTURE’
Patna (Agencies): RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Thursday
slammed the “bulldozer culture” of Narendra Modi govern-
ment accusing it of demolishing the structures of a particular
community in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri and other BJP-ruled
states. “China built two villages in the Indian territory but the
Centre fear speaking two words about it, forget about demol-
ishing them. Are they concerned about national interest, unity
and integrity and the constitution or are just running bulldoz-
ers on a particular community?” Tejashwi said. “If those in
(Jahangirpuri) are illegal constructions, what was the govern-
ment and administration doing till now,” Tejashwi asked.

New Delhi: Seven elec-
toral trusts received a
total amount of `258.49
crore from corporates
and individuals, and
the BJP bagged more
than 82% of it, poll
rights body ADR said.
Electoral trust is a
non-profit organisation
formed in India for or-
derly receiving of con-
tributions from corpo-
rate entities and indi-
viduals to political par-
ties. It aims at improv-
ing transparency in the
usage of funds for elec-

The Association for
Democratic Reforms
(ADR), in a new report,
said 16 out of the 23
electoral trusts submit-
ted details of their con-
tribution for the finan-
cial year 2020-21 to the
EC, of which only seven
declared to have re-
ceived donations.
“Seven electoral
trusts which have de-
clared receiving contri-
butions during FY 2020-
21, have received a total
amount of `258.4915
crore from corporates
and distributed
`258.4301 cr to political
parties,” it said.
The BJP received
`212.05 crore or 82.05
per cent of these dona-
tions, while the JDU se-
cured `27 crore or 10.45
per cent of the amount.
Ten other political
parties — Congress,
NCP, AIADMK, DMK,
RJD, AAP, LJP, CPM,
CPI and the Loktantrik
Janta Dal together re-
ceived `19.38 crore.
According to the
rules formulated by the
central government,
electoral trusts are re-
quired to distribute at
least 95 per cent of the
total contributions re-
ceived during the finan-
cial year, along with the
surplus brought for-
ward from the previous
financial year, to eligi-
ble political parties be-
fore March 31.
The ADR report anal-
yses the details of do-
nors of seven electoral
trusts formed after Jan-
uary, 2013, and the con-
tributions made
through them to politi-
cal parties during a
given year.

MODI URGES CIVIL SERVANTS TO WORK FOR
‘NATION FIRST, INDIA FIRST’
New Delhi (ANI): On
the occasion of Civil
Services Day, Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi on Thursday
urged civil servants to
work on three goals to
align with ‘Nation
First, India First’ policy
.
Prime Minister Nar-
endra Modi conferred
Awards for Excellence
in Public Administra-
tion 2021 on Civil Ser-
vices Day
.
Speaking on the occa-
sion, the Prime Minis-
ter said, “Today, on
Civil Services Day, I
would like to stress
three goals: Firstly,
bring Ease of Living to
each and every citizen
of the country. Second-
ly, we have to draft new
governance models
with the goal of making
India the best country
in the world.”
“Thirdly, maintain
the harmony and integ-
rity of the nation with
the underlying mantra
of ‘Nation First’. All
our efforts should be
aligned to one thing:
Nation First, India
First,” he said.
PM added that every
decision taken by the of-
ficials should be with
the goal of ensuring the
unity of the nation. He
said, “We have to uplift
our districts with multi-
pillar activities. Your
India@100 vision
should have your dis-
trict at the top,” he said.
“Our efforts should
be directed towards
making the dreams of
common man a reality
and create a positive at-
mosphere around this
mission,” he said.
“When you try to pro-
actively learn from peo-
ple, you will always find
something new to adapt
in your life,” he said.
Earlier in the day,
Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi also wished
all Civil Servants.
“Best wishes to all
Civil Servants on the
occasion of Civil Ser-
vices Day. In different
terrains and across dif-
ferent sectors, they are
working tirelessly to

serving the nation with
the same zeal,” PM, said

Service (IAS), Indian
Police Service (IPS), In-
dian Foreign Service

Service Day was ob-
served on April 21, 1947.

Chalk out plans for Govt
schemes: PM to officials
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on
Thursday called upon the district officials to draw
an action plan to implement the government
schemes on the ground. On the occasion of
the Civil Services Day, PM Modi urged civil
servants of the country to select any one of
the government schemes and draft a plan to
implement it in districts where they’re posted.
PM Modi also conferred Awards for Excellence
in Public Administration 2021 on Civil Services
Day. Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister
said, “Can the award winners share their stories
at training institutes related to civil services?
This will not only inspire others but will also give
practical exposure to them.”

New Delhi: Two days
after Prime Minister’s
interaction with Union
Secretaries (02.04.2022),
the Cabinet Secretariat
has shot letters to the
heads of various de-
partments and minis-
tries asking them to ini-
tiate immediate steps to
fill the existing vacan-
cies against sanctioned
posts.
While interacting
with Union Secretaries,
Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi had expressed
serious concerns over
continuing vacancies in
various departments.
Reportedly
, PM had
emphasizedthatemploy-
ment generation should
be given a high priority
and should be the focus
of Government inter-
ventions across public
and private sectors. Eve-
ry industry/ Depart-
ment should immediate-
ly take steps to fill the
existing vacancies
againstsanctionedposts.
As a matter of fact,
there is a shortage of of-
ficers at various grades
under the Central Sec-
retariat Service (CSS)
and Central Secretariat
Stenographers’ Service
(CSSS) in various de-
partments, thus ad-
versely impacting the
functioning of several
Departments and ham-
pering timelines and ef-
fectiveness in providing
the essential services to
the public and ensuring
good governance - one
of the poll promises of
NDA Govt since 2014.
Taking a look at the
vacancies against the
aforementioned servic-
es (CSS CSSS). Sourc-
es say that roughly all
put together hundreds
and hundreds of posts
are vacant in minis-
tries and departments
at various levels name-
ly; Senior Private Secre-
tary/Principal Staff Of-
ficer, Under Secretary,
Principal Private Secre-
tary, Section Officers,
Private Secretary, As-
sistant Section Officers,
Personnel Assistant,
Stenographer ‘D’, Sen-
ior Secretariat Assis-
tant and Junior Secre-
tariat Assistant.
In last few days many
Union Secretaries have
started responding to
Cabinet Secretariat’s
letter along with the de-
tails of sanctioned
strength and vacancies
in respective depart-
ments ministries at
various levels as afore-
mentioned.
For example the De-
partment of Food and
Public Distribution has
written a letter to Secre-
tary, DoPT requesting
filling up of vacant
posts; details of the va-
cancies are like this:-
Senior Private Secre-
tary/Principal Staff Of-
ficer 3 sanctioned posts
with one vacancy; Un-
der Secretary 31 sanc-
tioned posts with 3 va-
cancies; Principal Pri-
vate Secretary 13 sanc-
tioned posts with one
vacancy; Section Offic-
ers 59 sanctioned posts
with 26 vacancies; Pri-
vate Secretary 29 sanc-
tioned posts with 13 va-
cancies; Assistant Sec-
tion Officers 122 sanc-
tioned posts with 9 va-
cancies; Personnel As-
sistant with 21 sanc-
tioned post with 21 va-
cancies; Stenographer
‘D’ 26 sanctioned post
with 6 vacancies; Sen-
ior Secretariat Assis-
tant 8 sanctioned post
with 2 vacancies; and
Junior Secretariat As-
sistant 12 sanctioned
posts with 6 vacancies.
It may be underlined
that Central Secretariat
which comprises of
mainly three services
i.e. Central Secretariat
Service (CSS), Central
Secretariat Stenogra-
pher Service (CSSS)
and Central Secretariat
Clerical Service (CSCS)
is having hundreds of
vacancies.
The PM’s direction
has provided the much-
needed solace to CSS
CSSS cadre officers in
view of their long-pend-
ing attempts at seeking
decision-makers’ atten-
tion to the career pros-
pects and long-pending
issue of promotion of
CSS Cadre. They had
met Dr. Jitendra Singh,
MoS for Personnel
PMO, seeking his inter-
vention and getting
them justice. Though
their promotional is-
sues, subject to judicial
outcomes, are yet to be
addressed it seems that
their efforts are likely
to bear fruits. A section
of the CSS cadre looks
at the recent develop-
ment (filling up vacan-
cies with urgency) and
presumes that their col-
lective efforts have not
gone unheard and their
promotion issues may
soon gather momentum
in the backdrop of PM’s
latest direction to Un-
ion Secretaries.

EIGHT-HOUR BLACKOUTS HIT INDIA
AFTER HOTTEST MARCH SINCE 1901
New Delhi: An already
sweltering summer and
acute coal shortages
are triggering blackouts
across parts of India,
raising fears of a new
power crisis that could
roil Asia’s third-biggest
economy. A surge in
demand for electricity has
prompted states including
Punjab and Uttar Pradesh
in the north and Andhra
Pradesh in the south to
cut off supply. The disrup-
tion, as long as eight
hours in some places,
is forcing customers to
either endure the heat or
look for costlier back-up
options. Although out-
ages aren’t uncommon
in India, the situation this
year particularly points to
a “looming power crisis,”
said Shailendra Dubey,
chairman of All India
Power Engineers Federa-
tion, an advocacy group.
The blackouts sparked by
the scarcity of coal — the
fossil fuel that accounts
for 70% of India’s elec-
tricity generation — are
threatening to hobble the
$2.7 trillion economy.
They are also fanning
inflation at a time when
policy makers are strug-
gling to rein in runaway
energy prices fueled by
Russia’s war in Ukraine.

INDIA'S HIGH GROWTH RATE
positivenewsforworld:IMF
Washington (PTI): A
high growth rate for In-
dia, as projected in the
latest World Economic
Outlook, is not only
healthy for the country
but also positive news for
the world, Managing Di-
rector of the Internation-
al Monetary Fund
Kristalina Georgieva has
said.
The IMF, early this
week, projected a fairly
robust growth of 8.2 per
cent for India in 2022,
making it the fastest-
growing major economy
in the world, almost twice
faster than China’s 4.4
per cent.
The global
growth has been
projected at 3.6 per
cent in 2022, down
from 6.1 per cent in 2021.
“India is one of the
economies that are grow-
ing at a high rate. Even
with the small down-
grade, growth is project-
ed for this year to be 8.2
percent. Healthy for In-
dia, but also positive in a

ference here on the side-
lines of the annual spring
meeting of the IMF and
the World Bank on

On Monday, she met
the visiting Indian Fi-

Paolo Mauro, Depu-

addressing that issue.
On the fiscal front,
the budget is approxi-
mately neutral, which
seems to be sensible at

Fertiliser subsidy set to touch
a record high of `1.65 lakh cr
New Delhi (ANI): The
Indian government’s
fertiliser subsidy bill is
set to touch an all-time
high of Rs 1.65 lakh
crore this fiscal against
Rs 1.05 lakh crore budg-
eted, due to an unprec-
edented rise in the cost
of raw materials and
prices of fertilisers
globally
, according to a
CRISIL Ratings report.
The report noted
that the government
has been proactive in
addressing the situa-
tion. In the past two
fiscals, the govern-
ment has paid an addi-
tional Rs 1.2 lakh crore
and increased the
budgetedsubsidy
.How-
ever, the steep rise in
raw material prices
has been negating this,
and another interven-
tion may be needed in
this fiscal. Not doing so
would take the subsidy
arrears to an all-time
high of over Rs 75,000
crore by end of this fis-
cal, it said.
Over 85 per cent of
the subsidy arrears
could be contributed
by urea. This is be-
cause pooled gas prices
-- a blend of domestic
gas and imported LNG
considered for billing
to fertilisers plants --
had shot up more than
75 per cent last fiscal.

5G auction process on track,
says Ashwini Vaishnaw
New Delhi (PTI): New
Delhi: Just days after
the telecom regulator
came out with its rec-
ommendations on
spectrum pricing and
auction modalities,
Telecom Minister Ash-
wini Vaishnaw on
Thursday said that
things are moving “as
per schedule” on 5G.
The comment as-
sumes significance as
the Indian market is
gearing up for the next-
generation 5G servic-
es, that will usher in
ultra high-speeds and
spawn new-age offer-
ings and business mod-
els. The 5G spectrum
auction is expected to
be held in June-July
time frame.
To a question on
TRAI’s recent 5G rec-
ommendation and
what will be the next
course of action for the
telecom department,
Mr Vaishnaw said,
“Things are moving on
track, things are mov-
ing on 5G as per the
schedule.”
The minister de-
clined to make any spe-
cific observations on
the 5G recommenda-
tions and said, “Please
wait for few more
weeks, I think we
should be coming up
with good solution.”
Mumbai (PTI): Telecom service operator Airtel on
Thursday urged the government not to charge high
fees for allotting 5G spectrum, saying a faster roll
out of the next-generation telecommunication net-
work can have more benefits than collecting reve-
nue in upfront cost. Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman of
Bharti Enterprises which runs the country’s second
largest telco, said that there are a variety of appli-
cations across sectors ranging from healthcare to
video interactions, which will make 5G a technol-
ogy to be introduced as soon as possible. “5G is
important and that’s why we keep on requesting
the government to make the 5G as an enabler for
hundreds of things that we develop in the country,
to keep the spectrum at affordable pricing, to not
load the industry too much,”Mittal said.

government may take
a fresh look at BPCL
privatisation, includ-
ing revising the terms
of sale, an official
said.
“We need to go back
to the drawing board
on BPCL. There are is-
sues in terms of con-
sortium formation,
geopolitical situation
and energy transition
aspects,” an official
said.
The government is
selling its entire 52.98
per cent stake in BPCL
for which three expres-
sions of interest (EoIs),
including one from bil-
lionaire Anil Agarwal-
led Vedanta Group,
have been received.
Financial bids are
yet to be invited.
The official said the
transition towards
green and renewable
fuel has made privati-
sation difficult in ex-
isting terms.

Ahmedabad: The row
over succession of the
Sokhada Dham Swa-
minarayan sect
reached Gujarat High
Court on Thursday, af-
ter a group of monks
and their followers
moved a habeas cor-
pus and interlocutory
application before it.
After hearing sub-
missions made from all
parties, the court di-
rected the male monks
to Bakrol Ashram in
Anand district and fe-
male monks to Nir-
naynagar Sant Niwas
Campus. Further, the
court has directed Sad-
hu Tyag Vallabh Swa-
mi, Prem Swarup Das
Swami and his Secre-
tary JM Dave to not
visit Bakrol Ashram or
the Nirnaynagar cam-
pus without the court’s
permission. It has also
asked both the swamis
to reach a compromise,
“without stretching
things too far.”
The whole issue
erupted, after the sect’s
founder monk
Hariprasad Swami
passed away in July
2021, leading to the for-
mation of two groups
of monks warring to
become the late swa-
mi’s successor. The
court has asked all
monks to submit their
passports and other
documents for inspec-
tion and verification.

ANOTHER MAJOR DRUG BUST
First India Bureau
Gandhidham: In yet
another major drug sei-
zure at the Kandla sea-
port, the Directorate of
Revenue Intelligence
(DRI) and Gujarat Anti-
Terrorist Squad (ATS)
on Thursday intercept-
ed containers laden
with drugs smuggled
into India through the
Gujarat coast, in a joint
operation.
According to sourc-
es, they seized around
260 kgs of heroin,
worth Rs 1,300 crore,
after conducting a raid
at a container station
near Kandla port in
Kutch district of the
state, said an ATS offi-
cial.
“Based on a tip-off
received by the ATS, of-
ficials of this agency
along with those from
the DRI raided a con-
tainer station near
Kandla port and found
260 kg of heroin, which
is sold at Rs5 crore per
kilogram in the inter-
national market, hid-
den inside a container
kept there,” said the
senior official, seeking
anonymity.“It is too
early to disclose infor-
mation about the im-
porter and exporter
parties, but around 17
containers were im-
ported from Afghani-
stan by one single par-
ty, which are being in-
spected by the DRI,”
said a source.
Indian soil is being
used by Afghanistan or
Pakistan-based cartels
to avoid the attention
of international anti-
drug agencies. These
drugs are either meant
to be smuggled into In-
donesia, or Thailand,
but are sometimes also
sent to Madagascar as
well as other African
countries, where their
consumption is very
high, added the source.
Unfortunately, even
after seizing drugs
worth Rs3,000 crore at
Mundra port earlier
this year, crackdown
agencies have only been
able to catch small-time
players in the drug
smuggling game. They
have not succeeded in
busting any drug cartel
or made any major ar-
rests yet.

Hangxiety: Do You Feel
Anxious After Drinking?
he morning after a
night of drinking
with friends, and
family is never fun
if you have a hango-
ver. For most people,
hangovers involve a
headache, fatigue, thirst or
nausea. But some people also
report experiencing what
many have dubbed “hangxi-
ety” – feelings of anxiety dur-
ing a hangover. To know
more about hangxiety First
India brings you in conversa-
tion with Jinee Jain, a Psy-
chologist from Indore.
Jineesaysalcoholconsump-
tion often leads to disruption
in rational thinking and deci-
sion-making. This explains
whyitiscommonforpeopleto
make the wrong choices. Be it
spending money excessively;
exposing oneself to strangers;
orevenputtingoneself indan-
gerous situations- these are
decisions that our sober self
would not easily make. Later,
when one starts obsessing or
ruminating over regrets of
past decisions, anxiety kicks
in. ‘Hangxiety’, thus, is the ex-
perience of both physical and
psychological stress and dis-
comfortpostalcoholconsump-
tion. “And for people who are
already prone to depression
and anxiety
, alcohol can wors-
en symptoms of those condi-
tions,” says Jinee Jain.
WHO IS MOST LIKELY TO
DEVELOP HANGXIETY?
People who suffer from de-
pression and anxiety are
more likely to experience
anxious feelings after drink-
ing. Though alcohol can sup-
press anxious feelings while
a person is imbibing, the re-
bound effect can be far worse
than their baseline level of
anxiety
. Unfortunately, those
uncomfortable emotions can
drive people straight back to
the culprit: alcohol.
TIPS TO PREVENT HANGXIETY
n
There’s one obvious an-
swer to preventing hango-
ver anxiety: Drink less al-
cohol. “Consuming an ex-
cessive amount of alcohol
can place anyone at risk of
experiencing unpleasant
physical and emotional, “
Jinee explains. And here
are some tips and tricks to
manage the Hangxiety
.
n	Eat anxiety-reducing foods-
Opt for fibre-filled and nu-
trient-dense foods like
Sprouted grain toast
topped with avocado or a
refreshing smoothie with a
banana, a handful of
greens and coconut water.
And in beverages green or
black teas. Eggs are also a
good choice, as they have a
compound called choline
that can aid in breaking
down alcohol.
n	Stay hydrated- Drink plen-
ty of water and include
electrolytes if you can.
There are lots of great elec-
trolyte powders out there.
n	Sleep it off- Sufficient sleep
helps the brain to detoxify,
promotes a healthy mood
and can allow your mind to
most efficiently get back to
its healthy functioning and
help reduce anxiety-induc-
ing inflammation.
n	Eat something before you
drink- Brown’s biggest rule
is never to drink on an
empty stomach. Go for
something with healthy
fats, like olives or nuts.
n	Go one for one- After each
drink, sip water or spar-
kling water, advises Jinee.
This will help you feel more
hydrated the next day and
slow you down from drink-
ing too much at the mo-
ment.
n	Practising mindfulness
-Focusing on the present-
not only post hangover but
if we make it a routine
practice, we can signifi-
cantly reduce anxiety
.
n	Get moving -The more you
procrastinate, the more
you get into rumination or
overthinking. So get mov-
ing! Focus on what the rest
of the day has for you. This
is a very important tech-
nique- it’s very commonly
used in therapy work.
n	Remind yourself what as-
pect of the situation is in
your control. This takes us
closer to reality and in-
stead of beating ourselves
up for our actions, we learn
to focus on what can be
done now.
A few drinks might be relaxing but they get on to your
nerves on the next day by playing tricks with brain

  • 1. Johnson becomes first UK PM to visit Sabarmati Ashram HISTORIC First India Bureau Ahmedabad: Visiting British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday termed Ma- hatma Gandhi an ex- traordinary man who mobilized the princi- ples of truth and non- violence to change the world for the better. Johnson became the first prime minister of the UK to visit the Sa- barmati Ashram here, the place from where Gandhi led India’s struggle for freedom from the British colo- nial rule for more than a decade. In fact, the Tory poli- tician is also the first British prime minister to visit Gujarat after 1947. It is an immense priv- ilege to come to the ash- ram of this extraordi- nary man, and to under- stand how he mobilized such simple principles of truth and non-vio- lence to change the world for better, John- son wrote in the visi- tors’ book at the Gandhi ashram. While the British PM was effusive in his praise for the Mahatma, during the freedom struggle such praise for Gandhi from Britain’s ruling class was rare. Winston Churchill famously called Gandhi a “half-naked fakir” as the latter opposed send- ing Indian soldiers to fight for Britain in the Second World War and launched the Quit India movement in 1942. The Mahatma’s call to use the charkha (spinning wheel) and boycott foreign goods including cloth hit the textile industry in Man- chester. Charkha be- came a very potent sym- bol of the anti-colonial struggle. During his visit, prime minister John- son tried his hand at the charkha at Hriday Kunj, the hut where Gandhi lived. A replica of charkha was also presented to him. Turn to P2 UK PM Johnson was received at the Ahmedabad airport by CM Bhupendra Patel, Governor Acharya Devvrat and other senior state officials and ministers. Calls Gandhi an extraordinary man who changed the world, gets Mahatma’s book on how to live in London CRUCIAL READ GUJARAT MLA MEVANI ARRESTED Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani was arrested by the Assam Police late last night, reportedly on a complaint by a BJP leader over now-removed tweets on Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi. He was arrested in Palanpur at 11.30 pm on Wednesday and taken to Assam on Thursday. P2 SC TO HEAR PLEA OF MALIK TODAY The Supreme Court on Friday will hear a plea of Maharashtra Minister Nawab Malik filed against an order of the Bombay High Court which had rejected his interim appli- cation seeking immediate release in a case of money laundering being investi- gated by the ED. PK’S PLAN FOR CONGR 2.0 INCLUDES COUNTERING PREVALENT NEPOTISM Prashant Kishor’s presentation on Congress revival plan and strategy to win polls included the creation of a new Congress for the masses. Destroying a sense of entitlement and sycophan- cy. Fixing the alliance conundrum. ‘One Family, One Ticket’, to counter prevalent nepotism. He is likely to meet party top brass again on Friday. P6 New Delhi: Prime Min- ister Narendra Modi ad- dressed the nation from the Red Fort on Thurs- day to mark the 400th birth anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur. The Prime Minister addressed the nation from the lawns of the Red Fort and not its ramparts. “I felt at peace while listening to the shabad. I am happy that the country is following the path of our gurus. When Guru Teg Baha- dur was born, it was said that this child will eliminate sorrow of the marginalised. Gur- dwara Shish Ganj Sa- hib, which is close to the Red Fort, is a sym- bol of Guru Teg Baha- dur’s sacrifice,” said PM Modi. PM said the govern- ment is making efforts to connect pilgrimages of Sikh tradition. He lauded the dedication of the Sikh community and pushed for a self- reliant India. “India works for the welfare of the world,” he added. PM also released a commemorative coin and postage stamp on the occasion. Guru Tegh Bahadur is the ninth Sikh guru who stood up against forcible conversions by the Mughals. THE FATE OF THE BESIEGED PORT CITY OF MARIUPOL HAS BECOME TOTEMIC AS RUSSIA BATTLES TO COMPLETE A LAND BRIDGE COVERING TERRITORIES OF UKRAINE ALREADY UNDER ITS CONTROL, INCLUDING CRIMEA AND OTHER PRO-RUSSIAN REGIONS DAGGER IN UKRAINE’S HEART! Russia claims Mariupol ‘liberated’, leaves Ukrainian defenders holed up Moscow: President Vladimir Putin claimed victory in the biggest battle of the Ukraine war on Thurs- day, declaring the port of Mariupol “liberated” after nearly two months of siege, despite hun- dreds of defenders still holding out inside a gi- ant steel works. In a televised meeting with his defence minis- ter inside the Kremlin, Putin said there was no need for a final confron- tation with the last de- fenders who were boxed in after surviving near- ly two months of Rus- sia’s siege. “I consider the pro- posed storming of the industrial zone unnec- essary,” he told Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu in a televised meeting at the Kremlin. “I order you to cancel it.” “There’s no need to climb into these cata- combs and crawl under- ground through these industrial facilities,” he said. “Block off this industrial area so that not even a fly can get through.” Shoigu estimated 2,000 Ukrainian fight- ers remained inside the steel plant. Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said, “Can the award winners share their stories at training institutes related to civil services? This will not only inspire others but will also give practical exposure to them.” Rakesh Ranjan New Delhi: Two days after Prime Minister’s interaction with Union Secretaries (02.04.2022), the Cabinet Secretariat has shot letters to the heads of various de- partments and minis- tries asking them to ini- tiate immediate steps to fill the existing vacan- cies against sanctioned posts. While interacting with Union Secretaries, Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi had expressed serious concerns over continuing vacancies in various departments. Reportedly , PM had emphasizedthatemploy- ment generation should be given a high priority and should be the focus of Government inter- ventions across public and private sectors. Eve- ry industry/ Depart- ment should immediate- ly take steps to fill the existing vacancies againstsanctionedposts. As a matter of fact, there is a shortage of of- ficers at various grades under the Central Sec- retariat Service (CSS) and Central Secretariat Stenographers’ Service (CSSS) in various de- partments, thus ad- versely impacting the functioning of several Departments and ham- pering timelines and ef- fectiveness in providing the essential services to the public and ensuring good governance - one of the poll promises of NDA Govt since 2014. Taking a look at the vacancies against the aforementioned servic- es (CSS CSSS). Sourc- es say that roughly all put together hundreds and hundreds of posts are vacant in minis- tries and departments at various levels name- ly; Senior Private Secre- tary/Principal Staff Of- ficer, Under Secretary, Principal Private Secre- tary, Section Officers, Private Secretary, As- sistant Section Officers, Personnel Assistant, Stenographer ‘D’, Sen- ior Secretariat Assis- tant and Junior Secre- tariat Assistant. In last few days many Union Secretaries have started responding to Cabinet Secretariat’s letter along with the de- tails of sanctioned strength and vacancies in respective depart- ments ministries at various levels as afore- mentioned. For example the De- partment of Food and Public Distribution has written a letter to Secre- tary, DoPT requesting filling up of vacant posts; details of the va- cancies are like this:- Senior Private Secre- tary/Principal Staff Of- ficer 3 sanctioned posts with one vacancy; Un- der Secretary 31 sanc- tioned posts with 3 va- cancies; Principal Pri- vate Secretary 13 sanc- tioned posts with one vacancy; Section Offic- ers 59 sanctioned posts with 26 vacancies; Pri- vate Secretary 29 sanc- tioned posts with 13 va- cancies; Assistant Sec- tion Officers 122 sanc- tioned posts with 9 va- cancies; Personnel As- sistant with 21 sanc- tioned post with 21 va- cancies; Stenographer ‘D’ 26 sanctioned post with 6 vacancies; Sen- ior Secretariat Assis- tant 8 sanctioned post with 2 vacancies; and Junior Secretariat As- sistant 12 sanctioned posts with 6 vacancies. It may be underlined that Central Secretariat which comprises of mainly three services i.e. Central Secretariat Service (CSS), Central Secretariat Stenogra- pher Service (CSSS) and Central Secretariat Clerical Service (CSCS) is having hundreds of vacancies. The PM’s direction has provided the much- needed solace to CSS CSSS cadre officers in view of their long-pend- ing attempts at seeking decision-makers’ atten- tion to the career pros- pects and long-pending issue of promotion of CSS Cadre. They had met Dr. Jitendra Singh, MoS for Personnel PMO, seeking his inter- vention and getting them justice. Though their promotional is- sues, subject to judicial outcomes, are yet to be addressed it seems that their efforts are likely to bear fruits. A section of the CSS cadre looks at the recent develop- ment (filling up vacan- cies with urgency) and presumes that their col- lective efforts have not gone unheard and their promotion issues may soon gather momentum in the backdrop of PM’s latest direction to Un- ion Secretaries. Whilestate-runminer Coal India is producing at record levels this month, that may not be enough to replenish power plant stockpiles thatdwindledtobarelya third of required levels at the start of this week. Coal India, which ac- counts for four of every five tons of the fuel mined in the country , boosted its output by 27 per cent in the first half of April from a year ear- lier. Still, escalating de- mand seems to “dwarf” that supply increase, the Kolkata-based company said in a stock exchange filing on Tuesday . EIGHT-HOUR BLACKOUTS HIT INDIA AFTER HOTTEST MARCH SINCE 1901 New Delhi: An already sweltering summer and acute coal shortages are triggering blackouts across parts of India, raising fears of a new power crisis that could roil Asia’s third-biggest economy. A surge in demand for electricity has prompted states including Punjab and Uttar Pradesh in the north and Andhra Pradesh in the south to cut off supply. The disrup- tion, as long as eight hours in some places, is forcing customers to either endure the heat or look for costlier back-up options. Although out- ages aren’t uncommon in India, the situation this year particularly points to a “looming power crisis,” said Shailendra Dubey, chairman of All India Power Engineers Federa- tion, an advocacy group. The blackouts sparked by the scarcity of coal — the fossil fuel that accounts for 70% of India’s elec- tricity generation — are threatening to hobble the $2.7 trillion economy. They are also fanning inflation at a time when policy makers are strug- gling to rein in runaway energy prices fueled by Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The global growth has been projected at 3.6 per cent in 2022, down from 6.1 per cent in 2021. “India is one of the economies that are grow- ing at a high rate. Paolo Mauro, Depu- ty Director, Fiscal Af- fairs Department of the IMF told reporters during a news confer- ence held here on the sidelines of the annu- al Spring meeting of the IMF and the World Bank that the chal- lenges coming from the economic conse- quences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine were quite sever. Observing that in- flation in India is somewhat elevated, he said that it is a little bit above the comfort zone for the Central Bank, which is already addressing that issue. On the fiscal front, the budget is approxi- mately neutral, which seems to be sensible at this time, he said . The report noted that the government has been proactive in addressing the situa- tion. In the past two fiscals, the govern- ment has paid an addi- tional Rs 1.2 lakh crore and increased the budgetedsubsidy .How- ever, the steep rise in raw material prices has been negating this, and another interven- tion may be needed in this fiscal. Not doing so would take the subsidy arrears to an all-time high of over Rs 75,000 crore by end of this fis- cal, it said. Over 85 per cent of the subsidy arrears could be contributed by urea. This is be- cause pooled gas prices -- a blend of domestic gas and imported LNG considered for billing to fertilisers plants -- had shot up more than 75 per cent last fiscal. The comment as- sumes significance as the Indian market is gearing up for the next- generation 5G servic- es, that will usher in ultra high-speeds and spawn new-age offer- ings and business mod- els. The 5G spectrum auction is expected to be held in June-July time frame. To a question on TRAI’s recent 5G rec- ommendation and what will be the next course of action for the telecom department, Mr Vaishnaw said, “Things are moving on track, things are mov- ing on 5G as per the schedule.” The minister de- clined to make any spe- cific observations on the 5G recommenda- tions and said, “Please wait for few more weeks, I think we should be coming up with good solution.” Mumbai (PTI): Telecom service operator Airtel on Thursday urged the government not to charge high fees for allotting 5G spectrum, saying a faster roll out of the next-generation telecommunication net- work can have more benefits than collecting reve- nue in upfront cost. Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman of Bharti Enterprises which runs the country’s second largest telco, said that there are a variety of appli- cations across sectors ranging from healthcare to video interactions, which will make 5G a technol- ogy to be introduced as soon as possible. “5G is important and that’s why we keep on requesting the government to make the 5G as an enabler for hundreds of things that we develop in the country, to keep the spectrum at affordable pricing, to not load the industry too much,”Mittal said. After hearing sub- missions made from all parties, the court di- rected the male monks to Bakrol Ashram in Anand district and fe- male monks to Nir- naynagar Sant Niwas Campus. Further, the court has directed Sad- hu Tyag Vallabh Swa- mi, Prem Swarup Das Swami and his Secre- tary JM Dave to not visit Bakrol Ashram or the Nirnaynagar cam- pus without the court’s permission. It has also asked both the swamis to reach a compromise, “without stretching things too far.” The whole issue erupted, after the sect’s founder monk Hariprasad Swami passed away in July 2021, leading to the for- mation of two groups of monks warring to become the late swa- mi’s successor. The court has asked all monks to submit their passports and other documents for inspec- tion and verification. Sokhada Swaminarayan succession row reaches Guj HC, as two factions lobby for top post ANOTHER MAJOR DRUG BUST First India Bureau Gandhidham: In yet another major drug sei- zure at the Kandla sea- port, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Gujarat Anti- Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Thursday intercept- ed containers laden with drugs smuggled into India through the Gujarat coast, in a joint operation. According to sourc- es, they seized around 260 kgs of heroin, worth Rs 1,300 crore, after conducting a raid at a container station near Kandla port in Kutch district of the state, said an ATS offi- cial. “Based on a tip-off received by the ATS, of- ficials of this agency along with those from the DRI raided a con- tainer station near Kandla port and found 260 kg of heroin, which is sold at Rs5 crore per kilogram in the inter- national market, hid- den inside a container kept there,” said the senior official, seeking anonymity.“It is too early to disclose infor- mation about the im- porter and exporter parties, but around 17 containers were im- ported from Afghani- stan by one single par- ty, which are being in- spected by the DRI,” said a source. Indian soil is being used by Afghanistan or Pakistan-based cartels to avoid the attention of international anti- drug agencies. These drugs are either meant to be smuggled into In- donesia, or Thailand, but are sometimes also sent to Madagascar as well as other African countries, where their consumption is very high, added the source. Unfortunately, even after seizing drugs worth Rs3,000 crore at Mundra port earlier this year, crackdown agencies have only been able to catch small-time players in the drug smuggling game. They have not succeeded in busting any drug cartel or made any major ar- rests yet. DRI had seized 3,000 kg of heroin at Mundra port in Sept last year. —FILE PHOTO Going by estimated market value of `5 cr, the haul is worth `1,300 crore Yadav on two-day visit to Guj, to meet office-bearers First India Bureau Gandhinagar: Guja- rat Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Incharge and Union Minister for Labour and Em- ployment Bhupender Yadav landed in the state capital on Thursday morning to assess the on-ground situation with feed- back from state lead- ers. YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva Hangxiety: Do You Feel Anxious After Drinking? he morning after a night of drinking with friends, and family is never fun if you have a hango- ver. For most people, hangovers involve a headache, fatigue, thirst or nausea. But some people also report experiencing what many have dubbed “hangxi- ety” – feelings of anxiety dur- ing a hangover. To know more about hangxiety First India brings you in conversa- tion with Jinee Jain, a Psy- chologist from Indore. Jineesaysalcoholconsump- tion often leads to disruption in rational thinking and deci- sion-making. This explains whyitiscommonforpeopleto make the wrong choices. Be it spending money excessively; exposing oneself to strangers; orevenputtingoneself indan- gerous situations- these are decisions that our sober self would not easily make. Later, when one starts obsessing or ruminating over regrets of past decisions, anxiety kicks in. ‘Hangxiety’, thus, is the ex- perience of both physical and psychological stress and dis- comfortpostalcoholconsump- tion. “And for people who are already prone to depression and anxiety , alcohol can wors- en symptoms of those condi- tions,” says Jinee Jain. WHO IS MOST LIKELY TO DEVELOP HANGXIETY? People who suffer from de- pression and anxiety are more likely to experience anxious feelings after drink- ing. Though alcohol can sup- press anxious feelings while a person is imbibing, the re- bound effect can be far worse than their baseline level of anxiety . Unfortunately, those uncomfortable emotions can drive people straight back to the culprit: alcohol. TIPS TO PREVENT HANGXIETY n There’s one obvious an- swer to preventing hango- ver anxiety: Drink less al- cohol. “Consuming an ex- cessive amount of alcohol can place anyone at risk of experiencing unpleasant physical and emotional, “ Jinee explains. And here are some tips and tricks to manage the Hangxiety . n Eat anxiety-reducing foods- Opt for fibre-filled and nu- trient-dense foods like Sprouted grain toast topped with avocado or a refreshing smoothie with a banana, a handful of greens and coconut water. And in beverages green or black teas. Eggs are also a good choice, as they have a compound called choline that can aid in breaking down alcohol. n Stay hydrated- Drink plen- ty of water and include electrolytes if you can. There are lots of great elec- trolyte powders out there. n Sleep it off- Sufficient sleep helps the brain to detoxify, promotes a healthy mood and can allow your mind to most efficiently get back to its healthy functioning and help reduce anxiety-induc- ing inflammation. n Eat something before you drink- Brown’s biggest rule is never to drink on an empty stomach. Go for something with healthy fats, like olives or nuts. n Go one for one- After each drink, sip water or spar- kling water, advises Jinee. This will help you feel more hydrated the next day and slow you down from drink- ing too much at the mo- ment. n Practising mindfulness -Focusing on the present- not only post hangover but if we make it a routine practice, we can signifi- cantly reduce anxiety . n Get moving -The more you procrastinate, the more you get into rumination or overthinking. So get mov- ing! Focus on what the rest of the day has for you. This is a very important tech- nique- it’s very commonly used in therapy work. n Remind yourself what as- pect of the situation is in your control. This takes us closer to reality and in- stead of beating ourselves up for our actions, we learn to focus on what can be done now. A few drinks might be relaxing but they get on to your nerves on the next day by playing tricks with brain SHIVANI SHRIVASTAVA cityfirst@firstindia.co.in T
