According to sourc-
es, amid the ongoing
B J P -
Shiv Se-
na-NCP
political
war, Fad-
navis has sud-
denly emerged
as New Delhi’s
“point man”
in Mumbai
to take on
the saffron
party’s po-
litical oppo-
nents, “by
hook or by
c r o o k ” ,
and was
recently
advised by the party
high command to “per-
form or perish”. With
the growing number
of CBI, ED and In-
come-Tax cases
against leaders of the
Shiv Sena, NCP and
Congress, it is believed
in relevant circles that
there is a “hidden and
discreet” role played
by Fadnavis as “princi-
pal informer” also
working as a “friend,
philosopher and
guide” to central intel-
ligence agencies.
Fadnavis, as Maha-
rashtra CM for five
years, is reportedly in
possession of highly
sensitive documents
and tapes which can
put quite a few senior
Sena, NCP and Con-
gress leaders in a tight
spot. There is a gener-
al feeling in the opposi-
tion that Fadnavis is
working as the “coor-
dinator” for central
revenue intelligence
agencies having thor-
oughly done his
“homework”, in addi-
tion to having gener-
ated his own “data
bank” to nail political
opponents.
This was in fact one
of the aspects on
which he was grudged
by his party high com-
mand: for not exploit-
ing the sharp intelli-
gence gleaned from the
home department
which was under his
charge to neutralize
political opponents in
Maharashtra. Fad-
navis chose to main-
tain good political
equations and a steady
boat instead of going
after his political ri-
vals outside the BJP.
In one particular
case, when Fadnavis
was asked by the media
how he was in posses-
sion of a “secret tape”
related to phone tap-
ping, he “innocently”
replied that the con-
cerned video, and au-
diotapes were received
by him on his mobile
through Whatsapp,
while some were sent
to him by post. All
these “developments”
have virtually forced
the Mumbai business
and corporate world
to accord an equiv-
alent status, im-
portance and
recognition to
Fadnavis on par
with CM Ud-
dhav Thackeray
.
The reasons are
very clear: Most
business bigwigs are
suitably “concerned”
about the operations
of the ED, I-T depart-
ment and CBI and, at
this
 Turn to P8
There is a general feeling in the
opposition that Fadnavis is working as the
“coordinator”for central revenue
intelligence agencies having thoroughly
done his“home work”, in addition to
having generated his own“data bank”to
nail political opponents.

BMC mandates Marathi nameplates, renaming bars
with religious/historic fort names in Mumbai city
Renni Abraham
Mumbai: The Shiv Se-
na-controlled Brihan-
mumbai Municipal Cor-
poration (BMC) has is-
sued a notification man-
dating a clear emphasis
on Marathi signboards
displayed outside shops
and establishments in
Mumbai city by May 31.
Along with the diktat on
the use of Marathi let-
tering of equal font size
as any other language
used on the signboard, a
second condition im-
posed is to refrain from
using the names of
great personalities (reli-
gious deities) or histor-
ic forts in Maharashtra.
Beer bars and estab-
lishments serving liq-
uor on every other
street corner bearing
names of deities and
saints such as “Sai Lee-
la Bar” and “Krishna
Bar and Restaurant”
have offended Hindu
sensibilities in Mumbai
city for years now.
The BMC issued no-
tice on Friday, however,
specifically states, “Es-
tablishments in which
liquor is supplied or
sold will not have the
names of great persons
or forts written on the
nameplates,” and adds
that a provision for the
same has been made in
the act.
Attempts to reach
BMC Commissioner
Iqbal Singh Chahal or a
senior state govern-
ment official in the
CMO for more clarity
on the issue were unsuc-
cessful.
The BMC diktat fur-
ther notes, “A circular
was issued recently by
the Department of
Shops and Establish-
ments of BMC regard-
ing the adoption of rel-
evant procedures, the
salient points of which
are: If there are names
of great personalities or
forts on the nameplates
of the establishments in
which liquor is supplied
or sold, as per the above
notification, Turn to P2
A quick Internet search throws up several watering holes called
Sai Leela, which will all have to rethink their nomenclature.
Liquor-dispensing establishments
using names of religious deities will
have to be renamed by June

No need for pvt facility: Court on
Deshmukh’s shoulder surgery
First India Bureau
Mumbai: A local court
has refused to grant
permission to former
Home Minister Anil
Deshmukh to under-
go shoulder surgery
at a private hospital
and said he could get
the medical proce-
dure done at the state-
run JJ Hospital.
Deshmukh had
sought permission to be
temporarily shifted to a
private hospital of his
choice to undergo the
surgery and treatment
for his dislocated shoul-
der. The NCP leader
said he would bear the
expenses.
The Enforcement Di-
rectorate (ED) had,
however, opposed the
plea and said that JJ
Hospital was well-
equipped with qualified
doctors to perform the
surgery
.
The special court
here on Friday rejected
Deshmukh’s applica-
tion and said he could
get the surgery and
treatment done at the
JJ Hospital.
Deshmukh is cur-
rently in judicial cus-
tody following his ar-
rest by Enforcement
Directorate (ED) in No-
vember last year in a
money laundering case.
The ED case of mon-
ey laundering against
Deshmukh, who was
earlier the home minis-
ter in the Shiv Sena-led
Maha Vikas Aghadi
(MVA) government,
and others came after
the CBI booked him in
the corruption case re-
lated to allegations of
extortion made by for-
mer Mumbai Police
commissioner Singh.
The ED claimed that
Deshmukh misused his
official position and col-
lected `4.70 crore from
various bars in Mum-
bai, which was then
laundered through the
Nagpur-based Shri Sai
Shikshan Sansthan, an
educational trust con-
trolled by the Desh-
mukh family

No medical bail
for Nawab Malik
First India Bureau
Mumbai: A special
court here on Fri-
day refused to grant
temporary bail on
medical grounds to
minister Nawab Ma-
lik, but allowed him
to get treatment at a
private hospital.
Judge RN Rokade,
who is hearing mat-
tersof thePrevention
of Money Launder-
ing Act (PMLA), said
Malik’s daughter can
remain present dur-
ing the treatment.
The court also re-
buked the prosecut-
ing agency, the En-
forcement Directo-
rate (ED), for not tak-
ing Malik to the doc-
tor who has been
treating him since
the beginning.
The ED arrested
Malik (62) on Febru-
ary 23 in connection
with a money-laun-
dering probe linked
to the activities of
fugitive gangster Da-
woodIbrahimandhis
aides, under provi-
sions of the PMLA.
He is currently in ju-
dicial custody
.
Malik had sought
temporary six weeks’
bail for a medical
emergency on the
grounds that he was
suffering from kid-
ney-related issues.

Giving a stern warn-

“The Public Works De-

Sena slams Owaisi for
Aurangzeb tomb visit
First India Bureau
Aurangabad: All In-
dia Majlis-e-Ittehadul
Muslimeen (AIMIM)
leader Akbaruddin
Owaisi’s visit to the
tomb of Mughal
emperor Aurangzeb
at Khuldabad in
Aurangabad district
has drawn flak from
the ruling Shiv Sena,
which questioned
his move and warned
that if he tried to
“create problems in
the society, it would
not be tolerated.”
Owaisi had visited
the tomb on Thursday
before addressing a
rally in Aurangabad
city.
Former Shiv Sena
MP Chandrakant
Khaire and the party’s
Aurangabad district
unit chief and MLC
Ambadas Danve have
taken a strong objec-
tion to Owaisi’s visit to
the tomb. But AIMIM
Lok Sabha MP Imtiaz
Jaleel said there was no
need to draw a “differ-
ent meaning” out of it.
“The motive behind
Akbaruddin Owaisi’s
visit to Aurangzeb’s
tomb cannot be under-
stood. We remember
the statements he had
made earlier...No one
goes to the tomb of Au-
rangzeb. But if Owaisi
is going there to create
problems in the society,
then we will not toler-
ate it,” said Khaire.
Danve said, “It is not
surprising that Owaisi
went to Aurangzeb’s
tomb. The thinking of
Nizam, Razakars (the
paramilitary volunteer
force deployed by the
Nizam of Hyderabad to
resist the princely
state’s integration with
India during 1947-48)
and the earlier Islamic
dynasties is the same.
It was because of that
ideology that Owaisi
visited the tomb. But
those Muslims, who
think about the welfare
of the nation, should
stay away from AIMIM
and Owaisi.”
On Thursday, the
Raj Thackeray-led Ma-
harashtra Navnirman
Sena (MNS) had also
objected to Owaisi’s
visit to the Mughal
emperor’s tomb.

tage of the situation, the thieves entered the house and
stole Rs2,05,000 cash and four silver biscuits weighing

2018, the accused got angry with her aunt for not prepar-
ing breakfast for her and stabbed the victim to death with
a kitchen knife. Later, the accused wiped out the blood-
stains from the floor and wall of the flat and washed her

Inland cities are at a

The impending temper-

temperature patterns.
Vulnerable communi-

First India bureau
Chandrapur: Forest

captured a leopardess
in Chandrapur dis-

Friday
, days after vil-
lagers who were upset
over growing inci-
dents of man-animal
conflict held some for-
est staffers “hostage”
for a few hours, an of-
ficial said.
Attacks on humans
by leopards in the area
over the past couple
of months have
triggered panic
and unrest among
the local residents.
In the latest such in-
cident, a leopard en-
tered the hamlet in
Durgapur and attacked
three-year-old Araksha
Popalwar on Tuesday.
The child’s mother
managed to save her,
but she had to be admit-
ted to Chandrapur Dis-

for injuries suffered in
the attack.
When a forest ranger

he Lucknow Bench
of Allahabad High
Court threw out a pe-
tition unlocking 22
sealed rooms of Taj
Mahal and used strong words to
discourage such frivolous pub-
lic interest litigation in the fu-
ture. Justices DK Upadhyay and
Subhash Vidyarthi wasted no
time in junking the petition
with the observation, “Tomor-
row you will ask for permission
to see our chambers. Please,
don’t make a mockery of the PIL
system.”
Certain forces have been mak-
ing sustained efforts to prove
that Taj Mahal is a temple of
Shiva and call it Tejo Mahalay
and snip its Mughal past. The
recent PIL “to find the truth be-
hind” the locked rooms was one
such attempt. Fortunately, the
high court sharply advised the
petitioner to “do some research
first...do MA, PhD, enroll your-
self somewhere. Don’t make a
mockery of this”.
It is tragic that a set of people
is seeking the conversion of a
mausoleum to a temple. Global-
ly, these moves are viewed as
retrograde and polarizing.
T
aking a strong
pitch to revitalise
the Congress, par-
ty President Sonia
Gandhi’s impor-
tant message to the partici-
pants at the Nav Chintan Shi-
vir was to speak freely and
frankly here, but “let only
one message go outside” as
the Congress leader remind-
ed members that it was time
for them to pay back the debt
which they owe to the party.
A better part of Sonia Gan-
dhi’s speech was targeted to-
wards the BJP and Prime
Minister Narendra Modi for
brutalising minorities, “sub-
jugation of institutions and
reinventing history”. Polari-
sation, as Sonia Gandhi said,
has indeed driven minorities
to live in fear.
The party President is So-
nia fully aware of the issues
dogging the party and hinted
about them in her speech.
“Changes in organisation are
the need of the hour, we need
to change the way of our
working,” she said, urging
participants to keep the or-
ganisation above personal
ambitions. It was an obvious
reference to the G23 group of
dissenters who are seeking a
non-Gandhi as the party
leader. They are also demand-
ing “open elections” to the
Congress Working Commit-
tee. This group will be keenly
watching the development.
The brainstorming comes
after a failed attempt to get
poll strategist Prashant
Kishore on board. It is the re-
vival of the Congress and en-
suring unity at all levels is
whatthepartyleadershipwill
be focusing on. Her emphasis
on “meaningful self-intro-
spection” is important as the
party will have to prepare for
upcomingassemblyelections.
AmbitiousCongressleaders
would do well to heed Sonia
Gandhi’s advice and put up a
joint front to take on the BJP

M
esearches have shown that an
average Indian is spending
approximately 5 hours online
everyday
, out of which 30% of
the times they are uploading
content. This fact emphasizes
the era of Web 2.0 where com-
panies (mostly social media
apps) develop and provide
products and services in a
centralized manner.
Google provides content
based on your geography,
which is a testimony to its
design and the fact that they
track everything. Hope you
don’t believe that you own
your IG content! It might be
shocking to you that Face-
book owns everything on the
platform, and they have com-
plete control of all the con-
tent there. So if they want to
ban you or block you, they
will do it instantly
. Moreover,
no Gamer worldwide owns
their in-game assets!
The clash between owner-
ship rights has been going on
for a decade, and the Netflix
documentary “The Social Di-
lemma” highlighted this
very well. Hence the birth of
new alternatives: Web3
which is more democratic,
where the internet or virtual
worlds merge and integrate
into our lives empowering us
to interact seamlessly
.
In my opinion, Web 3.0 is a
concept for the next genera-
tion of the internet. Evolving
users are able to control, own
and monetise their online
content, digital assets and
identities. Their creativity
will have no bounds and con-
nect no limits.
I’m sure you’ve heard of
Bitcoin! It was introduced in
2008 and designed as a pio-
neer in decentralized crypto-
currency and digital payment
system without the need for
central banks or trusted in-
termediaries. All transac-
tions were based on the
Blockchain technology that
was introduced in a white pa-
per as the digital ledger for
managing and certifying the
validity of bitcoin.
Blockchain technology has
enabled users to interact with
online services governed by
peer-to-peer networks. Which
essentially means a decen-
tralized network of comput-
ers instead of the server of a
single entity. In such a set-
ting, users can own their data
and have permissionless
transactions without any in-
terference, along with the full
control of digital identities
and how and when data is
shared or returned to users
through their private keys.
Over the years blockchain
has transcended its original
objectives, and has evolved in
two major directions. On one
hand it continues to focus on
blockchain as the underlying
platform for bitcoin, thereby
becoming a platform for the
large number of  cryptocur-
rencies, digital tokens and on
the other hand, it is focused
on the use of blockchain as a
trusted distributed data base
for private and public sector
applications involving multi-
ple institutions, such as sup-
ply chains, financial services
and healthcare.
Over the past few years,
Web 3.0 has been given a
number of delphian descrip-
tions, ranging from ‘the new
age of the internet’ and ‘the
semantic web’. It has left eve-
ryone bewildered and con-
fused to wonder what exactly
is it and how will it work?
Why should business leaders
be thinking about it now?
Let’s take a look at the time-
lines…Web1 was the original
Internet and the World Wide
Web of the 1990s and early
2000s.Itwasprimarilyfocused
on publishing and accessing
information on web pages us-
ing open protocols like HTTP
.
Soon after came Web2 in 2005,
itdefinedthenextphaseof the
Internetbygivingitsusersthe
ability to create and publish
their own content through
blogs, personal websites and
social media platforms like
YouTube,Facebook,andTwit-
ter. However, most of this ac-
tivity became dominated and
monetized by a small number
of  global companies.
There are various views
floating around on what Web3
is all about! Some critics view
it as a hype, a rebranding ef-
fort to shed some of the cul-
tural and political baggage of
crypto. And others believe
that it is a dystopian vision of
a pay-to-play internet, in
which every activity and so-
cial interaction will become a
financial instrument - to be
bought and sold. A freedom
that no one has seen before
and will democratize the
whole mindset of using the
Internet. A blockchain based
network that will usher in a
more open, entrepreneurial
Internet and a middleman
free digital economy
.
I think Web3 is here to stay
andwiththepowerof earning
your own dime without any
regulation will make it more
popular over time. So either
we can embrace the change or
be obsolete, there are enough
case studies to prove on how
Web3 will soon be a signifi-

the industries, organisations

ciently to remain competitive

Moni Sharma
New Delhi: In his pres-
entation to the Con-
gress party, election
strategist Prashant
Kishor had remained
silent on the issue of
presenting a leader or
face from the opposi-
tion. His emphasis was
on the fact that the op-
position should create
a narrative and keep
that narrative running
continuously. By doing
this, even without a
face, BJP and Narendra
Modi can be chal-
lenged. This part of his
advice is right that the
opposition should cre-
ate a narrative and
keep it running, but af-
ter that the face will be
formed automatically,
this aspect doesnt seem
to be right. Along with
making the narrative,
the opposition and es-
pecially the Congress
will also have to pre-
sent a face. That is why
the Chintan Shivir of
Udaipur is important,
in which the Congress
party declares Rahul
Gandhi as the leader.
Anyway, whether
Congress declares it or
not, BJP has made Nar-
endra Modi fight
against Rahul Gandhi.
That’s when in every
poll or in every debate,
Rahul is projected
against Modi. Whenev-
er there is a survey on
the functioning of the
Modi government or a
survey of the populari-
ty of leaders, only Ra-
hul is kept in compari-
son to Modi. Propagan-
da is made by the BJP
that as long as Rahul is
there, Modi wont face
any difficulty. In social
media, jokes are circu-
lated stressing Rahul to
be the biggest asset for
the BJP.
Right now BJP has
chosen Rahul Gandhi
knowing him to be a
weak wrestler from
Congress’ side. Now is
the time for Congress
to go ahead and chal-
lenge on its own behalf
and announce the con-
test between Rahul and
Modi. Remember how
Narendra Modi fought
and got his name
stamped from BJP?
Udaipur’s Chintan Shi-
vir is a Goa moment for
Congress and Rahul.
Just as Narendra Modi
became the President
of BJP’s election cam-
paign committee in
2013 Goa session de-
spite opposition from
LK Advani and other
leaders of his camp
and then became the
prime ministerial can-
didate, so the Congress
needs Rahul Gandhi to
be the party president
and declare him to be
the prime ministerial
candidate.
Rahul Gandhi keeps
saying that he does not
want power, but it will
not help the Congress.
It will be good for the
Congress when they
walk their side and
challenge. The BJP has
already made him a
contender, so there is
no problem in becom-
ing a claimant from
Congress’ side. If there
is courage, commit-
ment to its agenda, con-
fidence in the strength
of the organization,
then Congress should
announce Rahul as
their leader in the par-
ty and contest election
under him as the PM
candidate. Modi had
the courage to get his
name announced, con-
test the election and is
ruling today. Rahul and
Congress also have to
show the same courage.
CONGRESS NEEDS TO HOLD THE BULL BY THE HORNS!

challenging the remov-
al of the process of
nomination of mem-
bers of the Anglo-Indi-
an community to the
Lok Sabha and the
State Legislative As-
semblies.
The high court, how-
ever, observed that no
purpose was left for giv-
ing such representation
after 70 years.
A bench headed by
Acting Chief Justice
Vipin Sanghi asked
the central govern-
ment to file its submis-
sions and listed for a
preliminary hearing
on November 18 the pe-
tition by the Federa-
tion of Anglo-Indian
Associations in India
challenging the 104th
Constitution (One
Hundred and Fourth
Amendment) Act, 2019
and its Bill.
What is the purpose
left? It appears it (the
provision for represen-
tation in the legisla-
ture) was for assuring
that you will be heard.
That objective is now
achieved. It is over, said
the bench also compris-
ing Justice Navin
Chawla, which asked
what was there to show
that the community
was backward.
The court observed
that the community
has integrated itself
with the local popula-
tion, noting that in 70
years, there would be
three generations of an
Anglo-Indian family.
Additional Solicitor
General Chetan Shar-
ma opposed the issu-
ance of notice on the
petition and said that
the provision was
meant for a limited
time and the case of
Anglo Indians who are
urbanised-- cannot be
compared with that of
scheduled castes com-
munities which suffer
stigmatic backward-
ness. Get us the consti-
tutional debates. Show
us the initial thought,
the court said.
The counsel for the
petitioner said that
the idea behind the
provision was to safe-
guard the weakest peo-
ple and by virtue of
the Act under chal-
lenge, the community
has been stripped of
its voice.

India-UAE trade pact to create
huge job ops, boost economy
Mumbai (PTI): The
comprehensive trade
agreement between In-
dia and the UAE will
help in creating huge
job opportunities and
boost growth of the do-
mestic economy, Com-
merce and Industry
Minister Piyush Goyal
said on Friday
.
The bilateral pact, of-
ficially dubbed as the
Comprehensive Eco-
nomic Partnership
Agreement (CEPA) is
expected to increase the
bilateral trade in goods
to over $100 billion and
trade in services to over
$15 billion within five
years. It came into ef-
fect from May 1.
The agreement opens
the door for many sec-
tors, particularly la-
bour-intensive ones
such as textiles, gem
and jewellery, pharma-
ceuticals and agricul-
ture, Goyal said while
briefing the media
along with the UAE
Minister for Economy
Abdullah Bin Touq Al
Marri here.
The ministers
launched ‘India-UAE
Start-up Bridge’ at the
India-UAE Partnership
Summit, organised by
industry body CII here.
“Clearly millions of
jobs will be added if our
exports which are now
at about $36 billion,
which is about nearly
Rs 2.5 lakh crore, grows
as we are planning. And
my own guess estimate
is this partnership can
finally go up to about
$250 billion of bilateral
trade on both sides.
“So my sense is that
this will give a big boost
to economic growth, to
jobs. And the opportu-
nities it opens not only
in the UAE, but in the
larger ground for the
African region. (It)
should significantly
give a bump up to the
Indian economy as
well,” Goyal said.
He added that the
pact would not only
open doors for Indian
businesses to UAE but
also to other countries
as UAE is a transit point
for large parts of Afri-
ca, CIS (Commonwealth
of Independent States)
countries, and the Gulf
region.
CIS countries include
Armenia, Azerbaijan,
Belarus, Georgia, Ka-
zakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,
Moldova, Russia, and
Tajikistan.
Further, Goyal said
that Indian pharma
products will get imme-
diate access to the UAE
market and “we believe
(bilateral) trade will
grow to at least to $100
billion in the near fu-
ture....Our own commit-
ment is to take it to a
much higher level”

Mumbai: After re-
search, the use of bri-
quettes biomass, made
from agricultural or
tree waste wood, was
found to be relatively
more environmentally
friendly. It will now be
used in 14 cemeteries in
the Brihanmumbai Mu-
nicipal Corporation
(BMC) area, said a press
release on Friday
.
On the insistence of
Minister of State for
Environment Aaditya
Thackeray to find an al-
ternative to wood used
in funerals, under the
guidance of (BMC)
Commissioner Iqbal
Singh Chahal, various
options for cremation
were examined by its
public health depart-
ment. In a traditional
cemetery
, 300kg of wood
is provided free of cost
by the BMC for each
body, which is usually
obtained from two trees.
However, now biomass
briquettes will be used
as an eco-friendly alter-
native, said an official.
As cremation facili-
ties are provided free
of cost by the BMC for
human corpses after a
tragic death, all types
of cremation including
traditional cremation
cemeteries, electric
cemeteries, and piped
natural gas-based cem-
eteries will now use
briquettes.Biomass
briquettes are a fuel de-
rived from agricultural
or tree waste wood and
are made from one-
third of the waste that
is thrown away. In addi-
tion to making better
use of this waste, envi-
ronmental friendliness
will also be maintained
by the adoption of
these briquettes.
According to official
data, over 6,200 bodies
are cremated every
year at 14 cemeteries in
the BMC area. Consid-
ering this fact, over
18,60,000kg of wood is
used for cremation
throughout the year.
However, only 250kg
of briquettes biomass
is sufficient for each
carcass as the com-
bustion heat generat-
ed by briquettes bio-
mass is higher than
that of wood.
Among the 14 ceme-
teries selected for use
of biomass briquettes
instead of wood are
Mangalwadi Cemetery,
Vaikunthadham Hindu
Cemetery, Goyari Hin-
du Cemetery and Dhar-
avi Hindu Cemetery,
among others.

Mumbai: Maharash-

over the enhanced se-

to him by the Maha-

over threats issued to
him for taking up the
cudgels to reduce
noise levels emanat-

A day after his Sen-

questing an upgrade
in the security detail
for his party boss, a
supposedly superfi-
cial increase in
Thackeray’s ‘Y’ secu-

ally effected.
According to a well-
placed source, “The
enhancement of po-
lice security for the
MNS chief includes
one additional police
sub-inspector and two
more police consta-
bles, which is more
like a slight to him
than a security up-
grade.”
Expectedly, Raj
Thackeray is fuming
over the apparent
slight, in the wake of
the ‘Z’-plus security
detail provided to
Bharatiya Janata Par-

gana Raut and even
Union Minister for

Raj Thackeray’s list
to reach out to for a
real upgrade of his
security detail before
his Ayodya visit on
June 05. When con-
tacted by First India,
a Union Home Minis-

“We will ensure that

  • 1. Renni Abraham According to sourc- es, amid the ongoing B J P - Shiv Se- na-NCP political war, Fad- navis has sud- denly emerged as New Delhi’s “point man” in Mumbai to take on the saffron party’s po- litical oppo- nents, “by hook or by c r o o k ” , and was recently advised by the party high command to “per- form or perish”. With the growing number of CBI, ED and In- come-Tax cases against leaders of the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress, it is believed in relevant circles that there is a “hidden and discreet” role played by Fadnavis as “princi- pal informer” also working as a “friend, philosopher and guide” to central intel- ligence agencies. Fadnavis, as Maha- rashtra CM for five years, is reportedly in possession of highly sensitive documents and tapes which can put quite a few senior Sena, NCP and Con- gress leaders in a tight spot. There is a gener- al feeling in the opposi- tion that Fadnavis is working as the “coor- dinator” for central revenue intelligence agencies having thor- oughly done his “homework”, in addi- tion to having gener- ated his own “data bank” to nail political opponents. This was in fact one of the aspects on which he was grudged by his party high com- mand: for not exploit- ing the sharp intelli- gence gleaned from the home department which was under his charge to neutralize political opponents in Maharashtra. Fad- navis chose to main- tain good political equations and a steady boat instead of going after his political ri- vals outside the BJP. In one particular case, when Fadnavis was asked by the media how he was in posses- sion of a “secret tape” related to phone tap- ping, he “innocently” replied that the con- cerned video, and au- diotapes were received by him on his mobile through Whatsapp, while some were sent to him by post. All these “developments” have virtually forced the Mumbai business and corporate world to accord an equiv- alent status, im- portance and recognition to Fadnavis on par with CM Ud- dhav Thackeray . The reasons are very clear: Most business bigwigs are suitably “concerned” about the operations of the ED, I-T depart- ment and CBI and, at this Turn to P8 There is a general feeling in the opposition that Fadnavis is working as the “coordinator”for central revenue intelligence agencies having thoroughly done his“home work”, in addition to having generated his own“data bank”to nail political opponents. AN ‘AGGRESSIVE’ FADNAVIS EMERGING AS NEW DELHI’S ‘POINT MAN’ IN MUMBAI BMC mandates Marathi nameplates, renaming bars with religious/historic fort names in Mumbai city Renni Abraham Mumbai: The Shiv Se- na-controlled Brihan- mumbai Municipal Cor- poration (BMC) has is- sued a notification man- dating a clear emphasis on Marathi signboards displayed outside shops and establishments in Mumbai city by May 31. Along with the diktat on the use of Marathi let- tering of equal font size as any other language used on the signboard, a second condition im- posed is to refrain from using the names of great personalities (reli- gious deities) or histor- ic forts in Maharashtra. Beer bars and estab- lishments serving liq- uor on every other street corner bearing names of deities and saints such as “Sai Lee- la Bar” and “Krishna Bar and Restaurant” have offended Hindu sensibilities in Mumbai city for years now. The BMC issued no- tice on Friday, however, specifically states, “Es- tablishments in which liquor is supplied or sold will not have the names of great persons or forts written on the nameplates,” and adds that a provision for the same has been made in the act. Attempts to reach BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal or a senior state govern- ment official in the CMO for more clarity on the issue were unsuc- cessful. The BMC diktat fur- ther notes, “A circular was issued recently by the Department of Shops and Establish- ments of BMC regard- ing the adoption of rel- evant procedures, the salient points of which are: If there are names of great personalities or forts on the nameplates of the establishments in which liquor is supplied or sold, as per the above notification, Turn to P2 A quick Internet search throws up several watering holes called Sai Leela, which will all have to rethink their nomenclature. Liquor-dispensing establishments using names of religious deities will have to be renamed by June In Mumbai's business world, Fadnavis's 'say' is no less than CM Uddhav Thackeray's MUMBAI l SATURDAY, MAY 14, 2022 l Pages 12 l 3.00 RNI TITLE NO. Deshmukh had sought permission to be temporarily shifted to a private hospital of his choice to undergo the surgery and treatment for his dislocated shoul- der. The NCP leader said he would bear the expenses. The Enforcement Di- rectorate (ED) had, however, opposed the plea and said that JJ Hospital was well- equipped with qualified doctors to perform the surgery . The special court here on Friday rejected Deshmukh’s applica- tion and said he could get the surgery and treatment done at the JJ Hospital. Deshmukh is cur- rently in judicial cus- tody following his ar- rest by Enforcement Directorate (ED) in No- vember last year in a money laundering case. The ED case of mon- ey laundering against Deshmukh, who was earlier the home minis- ter in the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, and others came after the CBI booked him in the corruption case re- lated to allegations of extortion made by for- mer Mumbai Police commissioner Singh. The ED claimed that Deshmukh misused his official position and col- lected `4.70 crore from various bars in Mum- bai, which was then laundered through the Nagpur-based Shri Sai Shikshan Sansthan, an educational trust con- trolled by the Desh- mukh family . BACK FORTH No medical bail for Nawab Malik First India Bureau Mumbai: A special court here on Fri- day refused to grant temporary bail on medical grounds to minister Nawab Ma- lik, but allowed him to get treatment at a private hospital. Judge RN Rokade, who is hearing mat- tersof thePrevention of Money Launder- ing Act (PMLA), said Malik’s daughter can remain present dur- ing the treatment. The court also re- buked the prosecut- ing agency, the En- forcement Directo- rate (ED), for not tak- ing Malik to the doc- tor who has been treating him since the beginning. The ED arrested Malik (62) on Febru- ary 23 in connection with a money-laun- dering probe linked to the activities of fugitive gangster Da- woodIbrahimandhis aides, under provi- sions of the PMLA. He is currently in ju- dicial custody . Malik had sought temporary six weeks’ bail for a medical emergency on the grounds that he was suffering from kid- ney-related issues. Last month, the NCP leader was ad- mitted to the state- run JJ Hospital in the city for a few days. Court permits him to get treatment at a private hospital Min: Take action on ‘Godse for Gandhi of Baramati’ tweet First India Bureau Mumbai: Maha- rashtra minister and NCP leader Ji- tendra Awhad on Friday demanded strict action against a Twitter user, who allegedly posted that time has come to prepare “Bara- mati’s Nathuram Godse for the ‘Gan- dhi’ of Baramati” on the microblog- ging site. The Twitter user, who uses the handle “Baglankar @Nikh- ilBhamre8” however, did not mention the name of any leader or political party in his comment, which he allegedly tweeted in Marathi on Wednesday . Baramati, a town in Pune district, is the home turf of NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar. Godse assassinated Mahat- ma Gandhi on Janu- ary 30, 1948. “At what level all this is happening... take strict action against this wicked individual,” Housing Development Minis- ter Awhad tweeted in Marathi. Awhad tagged po- liceofficials, including the state’s director general of police and Mumbai’s police com- missioner, asheraised the demand on the micro-blogging site. First India Bureau Mumbai: Social Jus- tice Minister Dhanan- jay Munde on Thurs- day inspected the con- struction of Babasa- heb Ambedkar San- skritik Bhavan Hostel and Industrial Train- ing Institute at Chem- bur, the construction of which has been stalled for 12 years. Munde warned the developer that the con- struction should be completed within three months and handed over to the social justice department. The hostel has a capacity of 1000 children from back- ward class, 750 boys and 250 girls and an indus- trial training institute. Baramati is the home turf of NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar Sena slams Owaisi for Aurangzeb tomb visit First India Bureau Aurangabad: All In- dia Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Akbaruddin Owaisi’s visit to the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb at Khuldabad in Aurangabad district has drawn flak from the ruling Shiv Sena, which questioned his move and warned that if he tried to “create problems in the society, it would not be tolerated.” Owaisi had visited the tomb on Thursday before addressing a rally in Aurangabad city. Former Shiv Sena MP Chandrakant Khaire and the party’s Aurangabad district unit chief and MLC Ambadas Danve have taken a strong objec- tion to Owaisi’s visit to the tomb. But AIMIM Lok Sabha MP Imtiaz Jaleel said there was no need to draw a “differ- ent meaning” out of it. “The motive behind Akbaruddin Owaisi’s visit to Aurangzeb’s tomb cannot be under- stood. We remember the statements he had made earlier...No one goes to the tomb of Au- rangzeb. But if Owaisi is going there to create problems in the society, then we will not toler- ate it,” said Khaire. Danve said, “It is not surprising that Owaisi went to Aurangzeb’s tomb. The thinking of Nizam, Razakars (the paramilitary volunteer force deployed by the Nizam of Hyderabad to resist the princely state’s integration with India during 1947-48) and the earlier Islamic dynasties is the same. It was because of that ideology that Owaisi visited the tomb. But those Muslims, who think about the welfare of the nation, should stay away from AIMIM and Owaisi.” On Thursday, the Raj Thackeray-led Ma- harashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had also objected to Owaisi’s visit to the Mughal emperor’s tomb. TOP TWEETS ALLAHABAD HIGH COURT GIVES PIL ON TAJ THE TREATMENT IT DESERVED he Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court threw out a pe- tition unlocking 22 sealed rooms of Taj Mahal and used strong words to discourage such frivolous pub- lic interest litigation in the fu- ture. Justices DK Upadhyay and Subhash Vidyarthi wasted no time in junking the petition with the observation, “Tomor- row you will ask for permission to see our chambers. Please, don’t make a mockery of the PIL system.” Certain forces have been mak- ing sustained efforts to prove that Taj Mahal is a temple of Shiva and call it Tejo Mahalay and snip its Mughal past. The recent PIL “to find the truth be- hind” the locked rooms was one such attempt. Fortunately, the high court sharply advised the petitioner to “do some research first...do MA, PhD, enroll your- self somewhere. Don’t make a mockery of this”. It is tragic that a set of people is seeking the conversion of a mausoleum to a temple. Global- ly, these moves are viewed as retrograde and polarizing. T aking a strong pitch to revitalise the Congress, par- ty President Sonia Gandhi’s impor- tant message to the partici- pants at the Nav Chintan Shi- vir was to speak freely and frankly here, but “let only one message go outside” as the Congress leader remind- ed members that it was time for them to pay back the debt which they owe to the party. A better part of Sonia Gan- dhi’s speech was targeted to- wards the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for brutalising minorities, “sub- jugation of institutions and reinventing history”. Polari- sation, as Sonia Gandhi said, has indeed driven minorities to live in fear. The party President is So- nia fully aware of the issues dogging the party and hinted about them in her speech. “Changes in organisation are the need of the hour, we need to change the way of our working,” she said, urging participants to keep the or- ganisation above personal ambitions. It was an obvious reference to the G23 group of dissenters who are seeking a non-Gandhi as the party leader. They are also demand- ing “open elections” to the Congress Working Commit- tee. This group will be keenly watching the development. The brainstorming comes after a failed attempt to get poll strategist Prashant Kishore on board. It is the re- vival of the Congress and en- suring unity at all levels is whatthepartyleadershipwill be focusing on. Her emphasis on “meaningful self-intro- spection” is important as the party will have to prepare for upcomingassemblyelections. AmbitiousCongressleaders would do well to heed Sonia Gandhi’s advice and put up a joint front to take on the BJP . SONIA GANDHI TAKES ON BJP, PM MODI The party President is Sonia fully aware of the issues dogging the party and hinted about them in her speech. “Changes in organisation are the need of the hour, we need to change the way of our working,” she said, urging participants to keep the organisation above personal ambitions M esearches have shown that an average Indian is spending approximately 5 hours online everyday , out of which 30% of the times they are uploading content. This fact emphasizes the era of Web 2.0 where com- panies (mostly social media apps) develop and provide products and services in a centralized manner. Google provides content based on your geography, which is a testimony to its design and the fact that they track everything. Hope you don’t believe that you own your IG content! It might be shocking to you that Face- book owns everything on the platform, and they have com- plete control of all the con- tent there. So if they want to ban you or block you, they will do it instantly . Moreover, no Gamer worldwide owns their in-game assets! The clash between owner- ship rights has been going on for a decade, and the Netflix documentary “The Social Di- lemma” highlighted this very well. Hence the birth of new alternatives: Web3 which is more democratic, where the internet or virtual worlds merge and integrate into our lives empowering us to interact seamlessly .  In my opinion, Web 3.0 is a concept for the next genera- tion of the internet. Evolving users are able to control, own and monetise their online content, digital assets and identities. Their creativity will have no bounds and con- nect no limits. I’m sure you’ve heard of Bitcoin! It was introduced in 2008 and designed as a pio- neer in decentralized crypto- currency and digital payment system without the need for central banks or trusted in- termediaries. All transac- tions were based on the Blockchain technology that was introduced in a white pa- per as the digital ledger for managing and certifying the validity of bitcoin. Blockchain technology has enabled users to interact with online services governed by peer-to-peer networks. Which essentially means a decen- tralized network of comput- ers instead of the server of a single entity. In such a set- ting, users can own their data and have permissionless transactions without any in- terference, along with the full control of digital identities and how and when data is shared or returned to users through their private keys. Over the years blockchain has transcended its original objectives, and has evolved in two major directions. On one hand it continues to focus on blockchain as the underlying platform for bitcoin, thereby becoming a platform for the large number of  cryptocur- rencies, digital tokens and on the other hand, it is focused on the use of blockchain as a trusted distributed data base for private and public sector applications involving multi- ple institutions, such as sup- ply chains, financial services and healthcare. Over the past few years, Web 3.0 has been given a number of delphian descrip- tions, ranging from ‘the new age of the internet’ and ‘the semantic web’. It has left eve- ryone bewildered and con- fused to wonder what exactly is it and how will it work? Why should business leaders be thinking about it now? Let’s take a look at the time- lines…Web1 was the original Internet and the World Wide Web of the 1990s and early 2000s.Itwasprimarilyfocused on publishing and accessing information on web pages us- ing open protocols like HTTP . Soon after came Web2 in 2005, itdefinedthenextphaseof the Internetbygivingitsusersthe ability to create and publish their own content through blogs, personal websites and social media platforms like YouTube,Facebook,andTwit- ter. However, most of this ac- tivity became dominated and monetized by a small number of  global companies. There are various views floating around on what Web3 is all about! Some critics view it as a hype, a rebranding ef- fort to shed some of the cul- tural and political baggage of crypto. And others believe that it is a dystopian vision of a pay-to-play internet, in which every activity and so- cial interaction will become a financial instrument - to be bought and sold. A freedom that no one has seen before and will democratize the whole mindset of using the Internet. A blockchain based network that will usher in a more open, entrepreneurial Internet and a middleman free digital economy . I think Web3 is here to stay andwiththepowerof earning your own dime without any regulation will make it more popular over time. His emphasis was on the fact that the op- position should create a narrative and keep that narrative running continuously. By doing this, even without a face, BJP and Narendra Modi can be chal- lenged. This part of his advice is right that the opposition should cre- ate a narrative and keep it running, but af- ter that the face will be formed automatically, this aspect doesnt seem to be right. Along with making the narrative, the opposition and es- pecially the Congress will also have to pre- sent a face. That is why the Chintan Shivir of Udaipur is important, in which the Congress party declares Rahul Gandhi as the leader. Anyway, whether Congress declares it or not, BJP has made Nar- endra Modi fight against Rahul Gandhi. That’s when in every poll or in every debate, Rahul is projected against Modi. Whenev- er there is a survey on the functioning of the Modi government or a survey of the populari- ty of leaders, only Ra- hul is kept in compari- son to Modi. Propagan- da is made by the BJP that as long as Rahul is there, Modi wont face any difficulty. In social media, jokes are circu- lated stressing Rahul to be the biggest asset for the BJP. Right now BJP has chosen Rahul Gandhi knowing him to be a weak wrestler from Congress’ side. Now is the time for Congress to go ahead and chal- lenge on its own behalf and announce the con- test between Rahul and Modi. Remember how Narendra Modi fought and got his name stamped from BJP? Udaipur’s Chintan Shi- vir is a Goa moment for Congress and Rahul. Just as Narendra Modi became the President of BJP’s election cam- paign committee in 2013 Goa session de- spite opposition from LK Advani and other leaders of his camp and then became the prime ministerial can- didate, so the Congress needs Rahul Gandhi to be the party president and declare him to be the prime ministerial candidate. Rahul Gandhi keeps saying that he does not want power, but it will not help the Congress. It will be good for the Congress when they walk their side and challenge. The BJP has already made him a contender, so there is no problem in becom- ing a claimant from Congress’ side. If there is courage, commit- ment to its agenda, con- fidence in the strength of the organization, then Congress should announce Rahul as their leader in the par- ty and contest election under him as the PM candidate. Modi had the courage to get his name announced, con- test the election and is ruling today. Rahul and Congress also have to show the same courage. CONGRESS NEEDS TO HOLD THE BULL BY THE HORNS! It will now be used in 14 cemeteries in the Brihanmumbai Mu- nicipal Corporation (BMC) area, said a press release on Friday . On the insistence of Minister of State for Environment Aaditya Thackeray to find an al- ternative to wood used in funerals, under the guidance of (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, various options for cremation were examined by its public health depart- ment. In a traditional cemetery , 300kg of wood is provided free of cost by the BMC for each body, which is usually obtained from two trees. However, now biomass briquettes will be used as an eco-friendly alter- native, said an official. As cremation facili- ties are provided free of cost by the BMC for human corpses after a tragic death, all types of cremation including traditional cremation cemeteries, electric cemeteries, and piped natural gas-based cem- eteries will now use briquettes.Biomass briquettes are a fuel de- rived from agricultural or tree waste wood and are made from one- third of the waste that is thrown away. In addi- tion to making better use of this waste, envi- ronmental friendliness will also be maintained by the adoption of these briquettes. According to official data, over 6,200 bodies are cremated every year at 14 cemeteries in the BMC area. Consid- ering this fact, over 18,60,000kg of wood is used for cremation throughout the year. However, only 250kg of briquettes biomass is sufficient for each carcass as the com- bustion heat generat- ed by briquettes bio- mass is higher than that of wood. Among the 14 ceme- teries selected for use of biomass briquettes instead of wood are Mangalwadi Cemetery, Vaikunthadham Hindu Cemetery, Goyari Hin- du Cemetery and Dhar- avi Hindu Cemetery, among others. 14 cemeteries to use biomass briquettes for cremation FOR THE PLANET lll Move aimed at preserving environmental friendliness to save 18,60,000kg of tree wood every year Only 250kg of biomass briquettes is needed for cremation of one body. Now, Chief MinisterUddhavThack- eray is going to review the project in the pres- ence of PMC officials. Notably , Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugu- rated the project. MP Advocate Van- dana Chavan while talking to the media said, “We are not op- posed to the project but the civic body has not answered our queries. The project should be implemented by ad- dressing the problems.” The state govern- ment is now going to examine the project. Renni Abraham Mumbai: Maharash- tra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray is angry over the enhanced se- curity detail provided to him by the Maha- rashtra government over threats issued to him for taking up the cudgels to reduce noise levels emanat- ing from loudspeak- ers on mosque roof- tops during the Aazan call for prayers. A day after his Sen- apati Bala Nand- gaonkar met Maha- rashtra Home Minis- ter Dilip Walse Patil (of the Nationalist Congress Party) re- questing an upgrade in the security detail for his party boss, a supposedly superfi- cial increase in Thackeray’s ‘Y’ secu- rity detail was actu- ally effected. According to a well- placed source, “The enhancement of po- lice security for the MNS chief includes one additional police sub-inspector and two more police consta- bles, which is more like a slight to him than a security up- grade.” Expectedly, Raj Thackeray is fuming over the apparent slight, in the wake of the ‘Z’-plus security detail provided to Bharatiya Janata Par- ty spokesman Kirit Sommaiya, actor Kan- gana Raut and even Union Minister for Micro, Small and Me- dium Enterprises Narayan Rane (BJP) after they took on Ma- harashtra Chief Min- ister Uddhav Thack- eray through public posturings. The Union Home Ministry, under Amit Shah, may be next on Raj Thackeray’s list to reach out to for a real upgrade of his security detail before his Ayodya visit on June 05. When con- tacted by First India, a Union Home Minis- try official only said, “We will ensure that not only Raj Thack- eray but also his nephew and Maha- rashtra Minister for Environment Aditya Thackeray’s visit to seek the blessings of Lord Rama will be conducted in a safe and secure atmos- phere.” Raj Thackeray CHIEF MINISTER THACKERAY’S AUNT DIES From Page1 stage, believe that any “communication gap” with the former BJP Chief Minister can prove fatal to their business interests. All said and done, despite clarifications and con- tradictions made by Fadnavis, almost eve- ryone in India’s finan- cial capital now be- lieves that there is close coordination and understanding be- tween the central agencies and the BJP in Maharashtra, which is closely monitored and supervised by the powerful and strong ‘Number Two’ in the national capital. According to politi- cal observers, by now Union Home Minister and master strategist Amit Shah has as- sumed complete com- mand and control of all “developments” in Maharashtra and it is likely that he may spring a major politi- cal surprise in the coming months to vir- tually compel CM Ud- dhav Thackeray to en- ter into a “power-shar- ing compromise” with the BJP once again, with Fadnavis back at the helm as Chief Min- ister of Maharashtra.
