BAHUJAN HITAY
NOT GABBAR,
THIS THAKUR
HAS ‘HUNTED’ AAP OUT
OF HIS HOME TURF!
Shashikant Sharma
Shimla: Union Minis-
ter for Information
and Broadcasting, and
a ‘young turk’ of the
BJP - Anurag Thakur
- has dealt a major
blow to the Aam Aad-
mi Party (AAP) in his
home state Himachal
Pradesh as he has ena-
bled AAP’s renowned
leaders to leave the
bandwagon and join
the saffron fold.
Thakur’s swift ‘han-
dling’ of the issue has
resulted in a major
setback to AAP, which
is trying to make its
political inroads in
Himachal.
After this blow, the
leaders of Aam Aad-
mi Party are in a tizzy
as to what needs to be
done towards ‘damage
control’. AAP, which
is dreaming of sitting
on the throne of
Himachal, has sud-
denly reached the
margins in the state
due to Thakur’s mas-
terstroke.
While on one side,
the Aam Aadmi Party
was claiming to
change the attitude of
politics through a road
show organized on
BJP’s foundation day
on 6th April in Mandi,
the home district of
Chief Minister Jai
Ram Thakur, however,
the current situation
is that the party’s
clan seems to be
completely disinte-
grating, which may
have never been im-
agined by AAP su-
premo Arvind Ke-
jriwal.
Delhi CM and par-
ty president Kejriwal
had handed the reins
of the party to Anoop
Kesri in Himachal
while appointing Sat-
ish Thakur as the
party gen-
e r a l
s e c -
retary in the hill state,
Thinking that on their
shoulders, he would
repeat the glorious
victory of Punjab in
Himachal too, howev-
er, Thakur woke Kejri-
wal from his deep
slumber. See also P5

slammed the govern-
ment in a series of
tweets, even calling
for the arrest of Im-
ran Khan, the Speak-
er and the Deputy
Speaker. Another op-
position leader Bila-
wal Bhutto Zardari
alleged that PM Khan
was trying to create a
constitutional crisis
and seeking military
intervention in the
country’s political af-
fairs by delaying vot-
ing on the no-confi-

PAK GOVT FILES REVIEW PLEA AGAINST SC
VERDICT ON DY SPEAKER’S RULING
The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday filed
a review petition against the Supreme Court’s verdict setting
aside the National Assembly Deputy Speaker’s rejection of
the no-trust motion against Imran Khan, reported local me-
dia. According to the sources, the development came after
Imran Khan finalized his consultations with legal experts
over the matter. The government will plead for suspension
of the verdict and for the National Assembly to be allowed to
function according to the rules, reported the media outlet.

IMRAN’S ‘FOREIGN
CONSPIRACY’ CLAIM
Pakistan’s Opposition
leader Maryam Nawaz on
April 9 lashed out at Prime
Minister Imran Khan for
lavishing praise on India,
saying he should go to
the neighbouring country
if he likes it so much. The
remarks of Pakistan Muslim
League-Nawaz (PML-N)
vice-president Maryam,
who is the daughter of
deposed PP Nawaz Sharif,
came after Khan called
India a “nation with a great
sense of honour”. “No
superpower can force India
to do anything against its
interests,” Imran had said.
Washington: The US has
bluntly rejected Pakistan’s
embattled Prime Minister Im-
ran Khan’s latest allegations
of a “foreign conspiracy”
plotted in Washington to
overthrow his government
with the help of the Opposi-
tion parties, saying there is
“absolutely no truth” to these
claims. Khan has been claim-
ing that the Opposition’s no-
confidence motion against
him was the result of a
“foreign conspiracy” because
of his independent foreign
policy and funds were being
channelled from abroad to
oust him from power.

Can’t regulate
parties offering
freebies during
polls: EC to SC New Delhi (Agen-
cies): Rahul Gandhi on
Saturday said the Con-
gress had offered to
form an alliance with
BSP chief Mayawati in
the recent Uttar
Pradesh assembly elec-
tion and make her the
chief ministerial can-
didate but “she did not
even talk to us”.
Lashing out at the
BSP supremo, the for-
mer Congress presi-
dent alleged that
Mayawati gave a clear
passage to the ruling
Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) in the state be-
cause of “the CBI, the
ED and Pegasus”.
The Congress won
only two seats out of
403 and got a vote share
of less than 2.5 percent
in Uttar Pradesh,
where the BJP retained
power. As many as 97
percent of Congress
candidates lost their
security deposit.
The BSP won just
one seat and a vote
share of around 13 per
cent. Nearly 72 per cent
of its candidates also
lost their deposit in the
election, which turned
out to be a bipolar con-
test between the BJP
and Samajwadi Party.
New Delhi: The Elec-
tion Commission (EC)
told the Supreme Court
that offering freebies ei-
ther before or after elec-
tions is a policy decision
of apoliticalparty
,andit
cannot regulate state
policies and decisions
taken by the parties.
In an affidavit, the EC
said:“Offering/distribu-
tion of any freebies ei-
ther before or after the
election is a policy deci-
sion of the party con-
cerned and whether
such policies are finan-
cially viable or its ad-
verse affect on the eco-
nomichealthof thestate
is a question that has to
be considered and de-
cidedbythevotersof the
state.
“The Election Com-
mission cannot regulate
state policies and deci-
sions which may be tak-
en by the winning party
when they form the gov-
ernment.Suchanaction

sionsinthelaw,wouldbe

ers.” The EC clarified
that it does not have
power to deregister a po-
litical party except on
certain grounds.
Covishield, Covaxin to cost `225 per dose to
pvt hosps, which can charge upto `150 more
New Delhi (Agencies):
A day before the Centre
rolls out precautionary
doses of Covid-19 vac-
cines to all adults, the
Serum Institute of India
(SII) and Bharat Biotech
on Saturday slashed the
prices of Covishield and
Covaxinvaccinesforpri-
vate hospitals to Rs 225
per dose.
Significantly, on Sat-
urday, the Union Health
Ministry issued guide-
lines to all states that
private vaccination
centres can charge a
maximum of Rs 150 per
dose as service charge
over and above the cost
of the vaccines. “Pri-
vate vaccination cen-
tres must declare the
price per dose chargea-
ble by them on Co-WIN,
in accordance with the
prices declared by the
manufacturers,” the
ministry told the states.
The announcement
by Serum Institute and
Bharat Biotech came
hours before the two
vaccine manufacturers
held a consultation
meeting with the cen-
tral government.
‘NO NEED TO

The government clari-
fied that there is no
need for beneficiaries
to register on CoWIN
portal again for the
precaution dose of the
Covid-19 vaccine. All
due beneficiaries are
already registered on
CoWIN, Union health
secretary stated.

CM says work of public welfare programmes and development will move forward at a faster pace now
First India Bureau
Gorakhpur/ Luc-
know: Exuding confi-
dence in BJP’s victory
in the ongoing MLC
polls, Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath on Sat-
urday asserted that af-
ter almost four decades,
for the first time in the
state the ruling party
will attain a thumping
majority in the Legisla-
tive Council.
“As the BJP candi-
dates have been elected
unopposed on 9 seats in
the MLC elections be-
ing held for 36 seats, the
BJP is assured to win
the remaining 27 seats
too,”said Yogi after
casting his vote for the
Gorakhpur-Maharaj-
ganj seat.
With a thumping ma-
jority in the Legislative
Council as well as the
Assembly, the govern-
ment will be able to do
even better work in the
interest of public wel-
fare, women’s safety
and self-reliance, em-
ployment of youth, and
farmers, he added.
Crediting PM Modi
for the grand victory of
BJP in the assembly
elections, CM Yogi fur-
ther said, “We were able
to form our government
with two-thirds majori-
ty under the leadership
of Prime Minister Nar-
endra Modi in 2017 and
2022 assembly elections.
This will be probably
the first time that the
ruling party will have a
majority in the State
Legislative Council.”
CM Yogi also said
that in 2017, the gov-
ernment had to face
difficulties due to num-
bers in the Upper
House. The Samajwadi
Party used to create
hurdles in develop-
ment works and public
welfare programs.
“This time, we will
get a thumping major-
ity in the Legislative
Council and the work
of public welfare pro-
grams and develop-
ment will move for-
ward at a fast pace,” he
stated. Responding to a
question, the CM said
that the policy of zero
tolerance against the
mafia will continue in
the state, but the hous-
es of the poor will not
be destroyed.
“Anti-land-mafia task
force is taking back en-
croached land from ma-
fias, we won’t raze shan-
ties of poor on en-
croached land until we
rehabilitate them. In
this regard, instruc-
tions have been issued
to the officials.”
The CM went on saying
that assets worth Rs
2500 crore have been
seized from profession-
al mafia. If the land
does not belong to the
reserved category, then
the poor should be giv-
en a lease there. If he
belongs to the reserved
category, he should be
provided accommoda-
tion elsewhere. He also
informed that instruc-
tions have been given
for systematic rehabili-
tation of street vendors
and giving them benefit
of SVANidhi scheme.
Along with CM, former
Union Minister Shiv
Pratap Shukla, local
MP Ravi Kishen Shuk-
la, Mayor Sitaram
Jaiswal, Gorakhpur Ru-
ral MLA Bipin Singh
also casted their votes.

AN “UNFORTUNATE”
TREND WHICH JUDGES
HAVE TO FIGHT FOR
DEMOCRACY’S SAKE
elations between the
judiciary and the
government have
shown signs of
strain in recent
years. The government is al-
ways happy to have a pliable ju-
diciary and an uncompromising
judge is always an irritant. But
the culture of maligning judges
of the country’s highest court
on social media and by the gov-
ernment is not conducive for the
country’s democracy. As it is,
the government’s anti-people
decision can only be challenged
in a court and if that institution
gets compromised then God save
this country. Highlighting the
tendency to attack the judiciary
the Chief Justice of India Jus-
tice NV Ramana voiced his con-
cern over “attacks on judiciary
in media, particularly social
media” on Constitution Day last
year. Some of these comments
appeared sponsored…motivated
and targeted, he said.
The CJI has once again raised
the red flag over the trend to ma-
lign judges by the government.
“It is a new trend. The govern-
ment has started maligning
judges,” he said. It is indeed an
“unfortunate” trend.

My dear Natwar,
I cannot thank you enough for your letter. The state
of indecision was beginning to tell on my nerves. You
can, therefore, imagine my gratitude to you. I think that
you allow your emotions to run away with your judge-
ment. The expectations people have from me are cruel.
I suppose if all of us with good will and stout hearts
work together, there might be some hope. I shall cer-
tainly get you a copy of Bertrand Russell’s book. We are
leaving here on May 4 arriving in New Delhi on May 5.
We would want to stay in the Ministry of External Af-
fair’s Hostel. We shall be four only i.e two children and
ourselves. I believe a suite with kitchen and bathroom
would accommodate us all. If not, we can have a suite
plus an adjoining room, if this were possible. Please do
whatever you can. Our baggage would take months to
arrive. We have, therefore, to carry on as best as we can.

My dear Natwar,
I have your letter of June 17. You have put me in the
same embarrassing situation in which Sharada had put
me when he asked me to contribute an article to a book
dedicated to the memory of Smt. Indira Gandhi. In terms
of purely personal relations, I have the deepest affection
for Rajiv. And, I believe, he gave me his affection and also
respect. However, writing about Rajiv as a Prime Minis-
ter is another matter. Also, being old-fashioned, I sub-
scribe to the wisdom contained in the Latin proverb:
Mortus nil nisi bonum. So, you will understand my per-
plexity and dilemma generated by your letter. This is a
purely personal letter to you as you will understand what
I am trying to say
. I trust that you are well and in the best
of spirit and health. With lots of love to you and Hem.
Yours Affectionately.

Dearest Hem and Natwar,
There was some English poet who used the words
‘jaded calendar’. He also described the contemporary
culture as ‘diabetic’ which was, according to him, ‘rot-
ting the nerve of Life and Literature’. As I suffer from a
chronic state of cheerfulness, I look forward to the year
1998. Without feeling jaded. Your New Year card added
to my cheerfulness. Many

PN Haksar (1913-1998) was India’s greatest diplomat
and Civil Servant. I owe him much. I considered him my
Guru. The other day I was sorting out old papers. Out
came several letters from PNH. I reproduce 4 in the
column. Here is a charming and delightful one from
Lagos, Nigeria. He was High Commissioner there.
Lagos
My dear Natwar,
I am not one of the world’s best letter writers. I, therefore, felt a little taken aback
when I found myself writing to you this letter. But I had to. There is no escape. I
was so overwhelmed with a desire to communicate. And since, the best way to resist
temptation is to yield to it, initially at any rate, I am writing to you. I do not care
to enquire into the origins of this great spirit of energy on my part. As you know
very well, I prefer to lie in my bed to sit up and I have even a greater preference for
just going to sleep. By the way, I think it was a lack of foresight on my part to have
travelled up to Mussoorie with you and thus to have betrayed an aspect of my
character which is moulded in less heroic a pattern. Anyhow the deed was done
and, at this stage there is very little point in pretending that I love exercise and
outdoor life. All this is absurd. I meant to write to you about other things. But here
am I talking about myself. And all this because one can be too much with oneself
in a place like Lagos. Trust this finds you well and that you are now all set for tak-
ing a plunge in matrimonial waters.
With affectionate regards
Yours,

ing the conspiracy of
the attack on National-
ist Congress Party Pres-

said it was a sinister
plan to cause physical
harm to the senior lead-
er and his family, and

startling claim that the
whole purpose of the
assault was to cause
“bodily harm” to Pa-

sent at that time in their
Silver Oaks bungalow.
“Fortunately, with the
blessings of millions of

bers,” he added.
NCP state spokesper-

warned that the party
activists would not “re-

Talking to the media

With new coronavirus
variants emerging eve-
ry four months on aver-
age, UN Secretary-Gen-
eral Antonio Guterres

COVID-19 pandemic is
far from over as large
outbreaks are spread-
ing in Asia.
Guterres also called
for governments and
pharma companies to
work together to deliver
vaccines to every per-
son, everywhere.
In a video message
“One World Protected -
Break COVID Now” to
the GAVI COVAX Ad-
vance Market Commit-
ment Summit 2022, Mr
Guterres said on Friday
that the gathering is a
critical reminder that
the “COVID-19 pandem-
ic is far from over.”
“We’re seeing 1.5 mil-
lion new cases each day
.
Large outbreaks are
spreadinginAsia.Anew
wave is sweeping across
Europe,” he said, adding
that some countries are
reporting their highest
death rates since the
start of the pandemic.
He said the Omicron
variant of the coronavi-
rus is a “startling re-
minder” of how quickly
COVID-19 can mutate
and spread - especially
in the absence of high
vaccination coverage.
While some high-in-
come countries are pre-
paring for their second
booster doses, one-third
of humanity remains
unvaccinated, he rued.
“This is a brutal in-
dictment of our deeply
unequalworld.It’salsoa
prime breeding ground
for new variants... more
deaths... and increased
human and economic
misery
,” he said.
Guterres said the next
variant is not a question
of “if” but of “when.”
“We are far from our
target of every country
reaching 70 per cent vac-
cination coverage by the
middle of this year. And
withnewvariantsemerg-

‘1.5mn Covid cases daily, new wave sweeping across Europe’
China is combating its biggest rise in Covid-19
cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with
millions under lockdown and the healthcare system
feeling the pressure. One of the last countries sticking
to a zero-Covid strategy, China aims to stamp out
every infection with strict lockdowns and by sending
all cases to secure facilities. In Shanghai, as the city
enters its third day of strict lockdown, after staggered
restrictions failed to contain infections, there are
increasingly widespread reports of residents being
unable to access food, medicine and other essentials.

The petrol pump, which

the BDA on Thursday.
Singh had said Ansari’s
petrol pump was built

Lucknow(PTI): Sama-
jwadi Party (SP) presi-
dent Akhilesh Yadav
alleged on Saturday
that the “double-en-
gine” government of
the BJP has broken all
records of misuse of
power in the Uttar
Pradesh Legislative
Council polls. Voting
for the Legislative
Council seats from the
local authority constit-
uencies was held in the
state on Saturday
.
In a statement issued
by the SP headquarters,
Yadav said, “The BJP
has crushed democracy
with the power of dou-
ble engine and aban-
doned all moral and
democratic beliefs in
order to forcibly get a
majority in the Legisla-
tive Council.”
Alleging that Block
Development Council,
Pradhan and Zila Pan-
chayat members were
stopped from voting at
different places, he said
serious complaints of
power-protected BJP
men capturing booths
at various polling sta-
tions with the help of
the government ma-
chinery and getting
votes polled in favour of
the BJP candidates by
bullying the voters were
received.
Stressing that the
chief election commis-
sioner was informed
well in advance about
the “BJP designs” yet
no action was taken, the
former Uttar Pradesh
chief minister said due
to this, the credibility of
the election process is
being questioned. ‘‘The
SP believes in democ-
racy and we are grateful
to all the voters for vot-
ing in favour of the par-
ty candidates in these
polls,” he said, adding
that his party’s fight
against the arrogance
of power will continue.

kinds of irregulari-
ties during voting in
Sultanpur, Amethi,

big statement on the
Azaan controversy on
Saturday
.
He said that the provi-
sion of Azaan by put-

propriate.
It must be noted that
MP Sakshi Maharaj,
who came to the polling
booth in the Municipal
Council to exercise his
franchise for the MLC
elections, said in a con-
versation with the re-
porters that the BJP
was winning all the
seats.
It is victory of Modi’s
development and Yogi’s
bulldozer. On the ques-
tion related to Azaan on
loudspeaker, the MP
said that it was inappro-
priate. “Controversy
over Azaan is pointless.

“There are two types of

Prayagraj: Allowing a
Habeas Corpus plea
filed by a father seeking
visitation rights to meet
his son presently living
with his mother, the Al-
lahabad High Court has
observed the father is
entitled to visitation
rights to meet his child.
Essentially, the child
is presently living with
his mother pursuant to
a ma mutual agreement
made between the hus-
band and wife in a di-
vorce suit decided on
the basis of mutual con-
sent.
In the agreement, it
was agreed the the cor-
pus/child will reside
with his mother. How-
ever, the man/father
moved to the Court al-
leging that he wasn’t
being allowed to meet
the child. Against this
backdrop, taking into
account the decision of
the Apex Court in the
case of Yashita Sahu.
State of Rajasthan
Ors. 2020 (3) SCC 67, the
Bench of Justice Anil
Kumar Ojha observed
that since the child was
admittedly born out of
wedlock of petitioner,
Abhinay Jain and Re-
spondent No. 2, Smt.
Megha Jain, therefore,
the petitioner, being the
father of the corpus is
entitled to visitation
rights.
It may be noted that
in Yashita Sahu (supra)
case, the Supreme
Court had rejected the
contention that a writ
of habeas corpus was
not maintainable if the
child is in the custody
of another parent and
held that the court can
invoke its extraordi-
nary writ jurisdiction
for the best interest of
the child.

Homoeopathy Day
Homoeopathy Day
orld Homeopa-
thy Day is ob-
served every
year on April 10
in memory of
Dr Hahnemann,
the Founder of
Homeopathy who was
born on this day
. Dr Chris-
tian Friedrich Samuel
Hahnemann was a physi-
cian born in Germany,
who was a great research-
er, linguist and applauded
scientist.
Homeopathy is a form of
medicine that works on the
principle of triggering the
body’s healing responses.
It was founded more than
200 years ago, and its popu-
larity shows no signs of
vanishing. Homeopathy
was discovered by the Ger-
man physician Dr Samuel
Hahnemann, who himself
was a doctor practising
western medicine. This
year in 2022, it will be the
267th birthday of Hahne-
mann. On this day, let’s
learn some of the most fas-
cinating facts about the
alternative system of med-
icine and World Homeopa-
thy Day 2022: April 10
WHAT IS HOMEOPATHY?
Homeopathy is an alterna-
tive form of medicine,
which believes that ‘Like
cures like.’ According to
Homeopathy, a disease can
be cured by a material that
can induce symptoms sim-
ilar to the sickness itself
by using highly-diluted
doses of natural ingredi-
ents. These materials are
believed to trigger the
body’s healing system.
Lesser the dose of the ho-
meopathic ingredients, the
larger the potency of the
medicines. Some of the ho-
meopathic substances are
diluted to such a large ex-
tent that no traces or mol-
ecules of the original sub-
stances remain.
Western medicine dis-
misses homeopathy as a
mere placebo whose two
most important principles
are at ornery with the laws
of physics. But the faith
patients have in homeopa-
thy hasn’t seen any change.
Plenty of documented cas-
es exists where people have
been seemingly cured of
their health conditions
with homeopathy
.
Homeopathy is also one
of the most preferred al-
ternative systems of heal-
ing in India, coming quite
to the indigenous medicine
Ayurveda. It’s also among
the Indian government’s
AYUSH for alternative
medicine. India also has
the biggest homeopathic
drug manufacturers and
traders in the country
.
WHY IS WORLD HOMEOPATHY
DAY CELEBRATED?
World Homeopathy Day
is celebrated not only to
commemorate the birth of
Dr Hahnemann. It’s also a
day to understand the chal-
lenges and future strate-
gies to develop homeopa-
thy even further.
It aims to create aware-
ness about the different
systems of medicine and
to improve ease of access
and success rates. World
Homeopathy Day seeks to
bring the community to-
gether to establish, rein-
vent and modernize the
system of medicine so that
more people can reap its
benefits.
WORLD HOMEOPATHY DAY:
WHAT IT MEANS FOR INDIA
Homeopathy is one of
the most popular medical
systems in India, in fact, a
close second among the
AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga
and Naturopathy, Unani,
Siddha, and Homeopathy)
services. There are grow-
ing numbers of users,
practitioners, educational
institutes, as well as pub-
lic health clinics, com-
pared to the AYUSH sys-
tems in India. Academic
homeopathy institutes
comprise 35.8% of AYUSH
colleges, while homeopa-
thy practitioners are 37%
of the AYUSH in total. Our
country has the biggest

traders’ sector in Homoe-

  • 1. ‘Welfare progs reaching all without discrimination’ First India Bureau Gorakhpur: While ad- dressing media per- sons after casting his vote in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections in Gorakhpur district on Saturday, Chief Minis- ter Yogi Adityanath said that with inspira- tion and guidance of Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi, the state government had been implementing public welfare programmes continuously for last five years, benefits of which were being pro- vided to masses without any discrimi- nation. Chief Minister ex- tended greeting of Maha Ashtami on occa- sion of Vasantik Navratri. Ygiving his best wishes to the peo- ple of the state on Vas- antik Navratri and the holy birthday of Mary- ada Purushottam Lord Shri Ram, the festival of rituals of Mother Goddess Adi Shakti, he said that the birthday of Maryada Purushot- tam Lord Shri Ram on the ninth date of the rituals of the goddess of power, provides a new inspiration and light to all of us. He said special func- tions would be organ- ised in Ayodhya Dham on Sunday on Ram Na- vami, the holy birth anniversary of Lord Shri Ram, instructions for which had already been given to make bet- ter arrangements for devotees. On Sunday, CM Yogi will hold a Janta Dar- shan Programme at Gorakshpeeth at 8 am. At 10 am, he will inau- gurate the CM’s Arog- ya Fair at PHC Jungle Kauria, Gorakhpur. There will be Kumari Kanya Pujan at 11 at Gorakhnath temple fol- lowed by Ram Janmot- sav programme. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath flashes the victory sign along with party MPs Ravi Kishan and Shiv Pratap Shukla after casting their vote for MLC elections in Gorakhpur on Saturday. Lucknow (PTI): An av- erage voter turnout of over 98 per cent was re- corded in the biennial Uttar Pradesh Legisla- tiveCouncilelectionson Saturday , officials said. Voting for 27 seats un- der local authorities’ constituencies began at 8 am and ended at 4 pm. According to the Elec- tion Commission of In- dia, the average polling percentage recorded till 4 pm was 98.11 with Rae Bareli registering the highest voter turnout at 99.35 per cent and Gora- khpur the lowest at 96.50 per cent. CM Yogi Adityanath, who was among those who turned up early to exercise their fran- chise, wrote later in a tweet in Hindi, “For the creation of a new Uttar Pradesh and for the victory of good gov- ernance, (I) discharged my duty by casting vote in the biennial elections for the legis- lative council from lo- cal authorities’ constit- uencies.” Turn to P8 Over 98% voter turnout in UP Legislative Council polls BAHUJAN HITAY NOT GABBAR, THIS THAKUR HAS ‘HUNTED’ AAP OUT OF HIS HOME TURF! Shashikant Sharma Shimla: Union Minis- ter for Information and Broadcasting, and a ‘young turk’ of the BJP - Anurag Thakur - has dealt a major blow to the Aam Aad- mi Party (AAP) in his home state Himachal Pradesh as he has ena- bled AAP’s renowned leaders to leave the bandwagon and join the saffron fold. Thakur’s swift ‘han- dling’ of the issue has resulted in a major setback to AAP, which is trying to make its political inroads in Himachal. After this blow, the leaders of Aam Aad- mi Party are in a tizzy as to what needs to be done towards ‘damage control’. AAP, which is dreaming of sitting on the throne of Himachal, has sud- denly reached the margins in the state due to Thakur’s mas- terstroke. While on one side, the Aam Aadmi Party was claiming to change the attitude of politics through a road show organized on BJP’s foundation day on 6th April in Mandi, the home district of Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, however, the current situation is that the party’s clan seems to be completely disinte- grating, which may have never been im- agined by AAP su- premo Arvind Ke- jriwal. Delhi CM and par- ty president Kejriwal had handed the reins of the party to Anoop Kesri in Himachal while appointing Sat- ish Thakur as the party gen- e r a l s e c - retary in the hill state, Thinking that on their shoulders, he would repeat the glorious victory of Punjab in Himachal too, howev- er, Thakur woke Kejri- wal from his deep slumber. XE VARIANT OF CORONAVIRUS DETECTED IN GUJARAT Nearly a month after the Congress was ousted from power in Punjab, the grand old party on Saturday appointed Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as the president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. The post was earlier held by Navjot Singh Sidhu who resigned last month. Warring was among the 18 MLAs who won their seats for the Congress in the recently concluded election. Later, Ayaz Sadiq de- clared voting open. Opposition leader Maryam Nawaz Sha- rif, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML- N) Vice President, slammed the govern- ment in a series of tweets, even calling for the arrest of Im- ran Khan, the Speak- er and the Deputy Speaker. Another op- position leader Bila- wal Bhutto Zardari alleged that PM Khan was trying to create a constitutional crisis and seeking military intervention in the country’s political af- fairs by delaying vot- ing on the no-confi- dence motion. PAK GOVT FILES REVIEW PLEA AGAINST SC VERDICT ON DY SPEAKER’S RULING The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday filed a review petition against the Supreme Court’s verdict setting aside the National Assembly Deputy Speaker’s rejection of the no-trust motion against Imran Khan, reported local me- dia. According to the sources, the development came after Imran Khan finalized his consultations with legal experts over the matter. The government will plead for suspension of the verdict and for the National Assembly to be allowed to function according to the rules, reported the media outlet. GO TO INDIA IF YOU LIKE IT SO MUCH: MARYAM NAWAZ WASHINGTON NIXES IMRAN’S ‘FOREIGN CONSPIRACY’ CLAIM Pakistan’s Opposition leader Maryam Nawaz on April 9 lashed out at Prime Minister Imran Khan for lavishing praise on India, saying he should go to the neighbouring country if he likes it so much. The remarks of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) vice-president Maryam, who is the daughter of deposed PP Nawaz Sharif, came after Khan called India a “nation with a great sense of honour”. “No superpower can force India to do anything against its interests,” Imran had said. Washington: The US has bluntly rejected Pakistan’s embattled Prime Minister Im- ran Khan’s latest allegations of a “foreign conspiracy” plotted in Washington to overthrow his government with the help of the Opposi- tion parties, saying there is “absolutely no truth” to these claims. Khan has been claim- ing that the Opposition’s no- confidence motion against him was the result of a “foreign conspiracy” because of his independent foreign policy and funds were being channelled from abroad to oust him from power. ...PM Imran likely to lose in Assembly Islamabad HC, Pak SC open doors at midnight; National Assembly Speaker and Deputy Speaker resign from post Pak Army puts various airports on high alert. Lashing out at the BSP supremo, the for- mer Congress presi- dent alleged that Mayawati gave a clear passage to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state be- cause of “the CBI, the ED and Pegasus”. The Congress won only two seats out of 403 and got a vote share of less than 2.5 percent in Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP retained power. As many as 97 percent of Congress candidates lost their security deposit. The BSP won just one seat and a vote share of around 13 per cent. Nearly 72 per cent of its candidates also lost their deposit in the election, which turned out to be a bipolar con- test between the BJP and Samajwadi Party. New Delhi: The Elec- tion Commission (EC) told the Supreme Court that offering freebies ei- ther before or after elec- tions is a policy decision of apoliticalparty ,andit cannot regulate state policies and decisions taken by the parties. In an affidavit, the EC said:“Offering/distribu- tion of any freebies ei- ther before or after the election is a policy deci- sion of the party con- cerned and whether such policies are finan- cially viable or its ad- verse affect on the eco- nomichealthof thestate is a question that has to be considered and de- cidedbythevotersof the state. “The Election Com- mission cannot regulate state policies and deci- sions which may be tak- en by the winning party when they form the gov- ernment.Suchanaction without enabling provi- sionsinthelaw, wouldbe an overreach of pow- ers.” The EC clarified that it does not have power to deregister a po- litical party except on certain grounds. TOP TWEETS AN “UNFORTUNATE” TREND WHICH JUDGES HAVE TO FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY’S SAKE elations between the judiciary and the government have shown signs of strain in recent years. The government is al- ways happy to have a pliable ju- diciary and an uncompromising judge is always an irritant. But the culture of maligning judges of the country’s highest court on social media and by the gov- ernment is not conducive for the country’s democracy. As it is, the government’s anti-people decision can only be challenged in a court and if that institution gets compromised then God save this country. Highlighting the tendency to attack the judiciary the Chief Justice of India Jus- tice NV Ramana voiced his con- cern over “attacks on judiciary in media, particularly social media” on Constitution Day last year. Some of these comments appeared sponsored…motivated and targeted, he said. The CJI has once again raised the red flag over the trend to ma- lign judges by the government. “It is a new trend. The govern- ment has started maligning judges,” he said. It is indeed an “unfortunate” trend. R nion Home Minis- ter Amit Shah pitching for Hindi as a spoken lan- guage instead of English may appear to be in- nocuous to those in the Hindi- speaking belt but in Tamil Nadu it’ll be construed as lin- guisticchauvinism.Shahsaid at a recent meeting of the Par- liamentary Official Language Committee that Hindi should be accepted as an alternative toEnglishandnottolocallan- guages. PM Narendra Modi, Shah said, has decided that the medium of running the government is the official lan- guage. This will add to the im- portance of Hindi, Shah said. Hindiasanationallanguage has been a sensitive issue in southern India and the region witnessed a three-year lan- guage war in Madras Presi- dencywaybackin1937-40over compulsory teaching of Hindi in schools. It is Tamil Nadu which has persistently op- posedintroductionof Hindiin the state. The state’s main po- litical parties---the AIADMK and DMK---have both refused to accept Hindi as the state’s official language. TN has, in fact, witnessed the highest number of agitations com- pared to other states opposing Hindi. In 2019 several protests were held in Bengaluru over Hindi Divas celebrations. As expected the first objec- tion to Shah’s statement has come from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin who warned that the move was against India’s pluralism and integrity .“If accepted, itwould wreck the nation’s integrity ,” Stalinsaid.“Does@AmitShah think that “Hindi state” is enough and Indian states are not needed,” Stalin asked. A way has to be found for the country to have a linguistic identity through dialogue. SHAH RAISES TN’S HACKLES OVER HINDI Shah said at a recent meeting of the Parliamentary Official Language Committee that Hindi should be accepted as an alternative to English and not to local languages. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah said, has decided that the medium of running the government is the official language. This will add to the importance of Hindi, Shah said U LETTERS FROM INDIA’S GREATEST DIPLOMAT PN HAKSAR India House, Aldwych, London, W.C.2. April 7, 1967 My dear Natwar, I cannot thank you enough for your letter. The state of indecision was beginning to tell on my nerves. You can, therefore, imagine my gratitude to you. I think that you allow your emotions to run away with your judge- ment. The expectations people have from me are cruel. I suppose if all of us with good will and stout hearts work together, there might be some hope. I shall cer- tainly get you a copy of Bertrand Russell’s book. We are leaving here on May 4 arriving in New Delhi on May 5. We would want to stay in the Ministry of External Af- fair’s Hostel. We shall be four only i.e two children and ourselves. I believe a suite with kitchen and bathroom would accommodate us all. If not, we can have a suite plus an adjoining room, if this were possible. Please do whatever you can. Our baggage would take months to arrive. We have, therefore, to carry on as best as we can. Yours affectionately, PN Haksar Kanwar Natwar Singh Deputy Secretary to the PM, PM Secretariat, New Delhi 4/9, Shanti Niketan, New Delhi-110021 Phone 671149 July 11, 1991 My dear Natwar, I have your letter of June 17. You have put me in the same embarrassing situation in which Sharada had put me when he asked me to contribute an article to a book dedicated to the memory of Smt. Indira Gandhi. In terms of purely personal relations, I have the deepest affection for Rajiv. And, I believe, he gave me his affection and also respect. However, writing about Rajiv as a Prime Minis- ter is another matter. Also, being old-fashioned, I sub- scribe to the wisdom contained in the Latin proverb: Mortus nil nisi bonum. So, you will understand my per- plexity and dilemma generated by your letter. This is a purely personal letter to you as you will understand what I am trying to say . I trust that you are well and in the best of spirit and health. With lots of love to you and Hem. Yours Affectionately. PN Haksar Shri K. He also described the contemporary culture as ‘diabetic’ which was, according to him, ‘rot- ting the nerve of Life and Literature’. As I suffer from a chronic state of cheerfulness, I look forward to the year 1998. Without feeling jaded. Your New Year card added to my cheerfulness. Many , many thanks for it. May I, on my part, wish you and yours, with all my heart, all the best not only in the year 1998 but in the next millennia. I owe him much. I considered him my Guru. The other day I was sorting out old papers. Out came several letters from PNH. I reproduce 4 in the column. Here is a charming and delightful one from Lagos, Nigeria. He was High Commissioner there. Lagos My dear Natwar, I am not one of the world’s best letter writers. I, therefore, felt a little taken aback when I found myself writing to you this letter. But I had to. There is no escape. I was so overwhelmed with a desire to communicate. And since, the best way to resist temptation is to yield to it, initially at any rate, I am writing to you. I do not care to enquire into the origins of this great spirit of energy on my part. As you know very well, I prefer to lie in my bed to sit up and I have even a greater preference for just going to sleep. By the way, I think it was a lack of foresight on my part to have travelled up to Mussoorie with you and thus to have betrayed an aspect of my character which is moulded in less heroic a pattern. Anyhow the deed was done and, at this stage there is very little point in pretending that I love exercise and outdoor life. All this is absurd. I meant to write to you about other things. But here am I talking about myself. And all this because one can be too much with oneself in a place like Lagos. Trust this finds you well and that you are now all set for tak- ing a plunge in matrimonial waters. With affectionate regards Yours, PNH

YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva WORLD WORLD Homoeopathy Day Homoeopathy Day orld Homeopa- thy Day is ob- served every year on April 10 in memory of Dr Hahnemann, the Founder of Homeopathy who was born on this day . Dr Chris- tian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann was a physi- cian born in Germany, who was a great research- er, linguist and applauded scientist. Homeopathy is a form of medicine that works on the principle of triggering the body’s healing responses. It was founded more than 200 years ago, and its popu- larity shows no signs of vanishing. Homeopathy was discovered by the Ger- man physician Dr Samuel Hahnemann, who himself was a doctor practising western medicine. This year in 2022, it will be the 267th birthday of Hahne- mann. On this day, let’s learn some of the most fas- cinating facts about the alternative system of med- icine and World Homeopa- thy Day 2022: April 10 WHAT IS HOMEOPATHY? Homeopathy is an alterna- tive form of medicine, which believes that ‘Like cures like.’ According to Homeopathy, a disease can be cured by a material that can induce symptoms sim- ilar to the sickness itself by using highly-diluted doses of natural ingredi- ents. These materials are believed to trigger the body’s healing system. Lesser the dose of the ho- meopathic ingredients, the larger the potency of the medicines. Some of the ho- meopathic substances are diluted to such a large ex- tent that no traces or mol- ecules of the original sub- stances remain. Western medicine dis- misses homeopathy as a mere placebo whose two most important principles are at ornery with the laws of physics. But the faith patients have in homeopa- thy hasn’t seen any change. Plenty of documented cas- es exists where people have been seemingly cured of their health conditions with homeopathy . Homeopathy is also one of the most preferred al- ternative systems of heal- ing in India, coming quite to the indigenous medicine Ayurveda. It’s also among the Indian government’s AYUSH for alternative medicine. India also has the biggest homeopathic drug manufacturers and traders in the country . WHY IS WORLD HOMEOPATHY DAY CELEBRATED? World Homeopathy Day is celebrated not only to commemorate the birth of Dr Hahnemann. It’s also a day to understand the chal- lenges and future strate- gies to develop homeopa- thy even further. It aims to create aware- ness about the different systems of medicine and to improve ease of access and success rates.
