REMARK ON PROPHET MUHAMMED
BJP SUSPENDS
Nupur Sharma, Naveen Jindal
Moni Sharma
New Delhi: The BJP on
Sunday suspended its
national spokesperson
Nupur Sharma and ex-
pelled its Delhi media
head Naveen Kumar
Jindal for their alleged
derogatory remarks
against Prophet Mu-
hammad, as it sought to
defuse row over issue.
Amid protests by
Muslim groups over the
remarks, party also is-
sued a statement aimed
at assuaging the con-
cerns of minorities and
distancing itself from
these members, assert-
ing that it respects all
religions and strongly
denounces insult of any
religious personality
.
THE SUSPENSION
While Sharma's com-
ments during a TV de-
bate aimed at the found-
er of Islam have drawn
ire of Muslim groups,
Jindal also posted objec-
tionable tweets, deleted
later, and has been ac-
cused of often posting
inciting comments.
Their comments also
sparked a Twitter trend
calling for boycotting
Indian products in some
countries.
I TAKE MY WORDS
BACK, SAYS NUPUR
Nupur Sharma took to Twitter to issue an
apology. She wrote, “If my words have
caused discomfort or hurt religious feelings
of anyone whatsoever, I hereby uncondition-
ally withdraw my statement. It was never my
intention to hurt anyone’s religious feelings.”
JINDAL: NO INTENTION
TO HURT SENTIMENTS
Naveen Kumar Jindal said that he was una-
ware of being expelled from BJP and was
yet to receive any letter from the state presi-
dent. Jindal also said he had tweeted asking
a question to those attacking and insulting
Hindu deities and it was not aimed at hurting
the religious sentiments of any community.

BJP SAYS IT RESPECTS ALL RELIGIONS
New Delhi: BJP on Sunday stated that it “respects all religions” and is
“strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or
religion”. “The BJP strongly denounces insult of any religious personali-
ties of any religion. BJP is also against any ideology which insults or
demeans any sect or religion. The BJP does not promote such people or
philosophy,” the BJP said in a statement issued by its general secretary
Arun Singh on Sunday. “During the thousands of years of the
history of India every religion has blossomed and flourished.
The BJP respects all religions,” the brief statement said.
QATAR, KUWAIT & IRAN
SUMMON INDIAN ENVOYS
Qatar, Kuwait & Iran on Sunday sum-
moned India’s Ambassadors and
handed over to them protest notes on
what the Gulf countries called categorical
“rejection and condemnation” of the con-
troversial remarks of a BJP leader against
Prophet Mohammed. The controversial
remarks also sparked a Twitter trend in the
Arab world calling for a boycott of Indian
products. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu
is currently visiting Qatar and on Sunday he
met Qatar’s PM and Interior Minister Sheikh
Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani.
CONG LASHES OUT AT
BJP OVER REMARKS
Soon after BJP on Sunday suspended its
spokesperson Nupur Sharma from par-
ty’s primary membership and expelled its
Delhi media head Naveen
Kumar Jindal after their
alleged controversial
remarks on religious
minorities, Congress
General Secretary Ran-
deep Singh Surjewala
lashed out at the BJP by saying that “it is
nothing but a blatantly counterfeit pretence
and sham attempt at damage control.”
I condemn in strongest
possible words hurtful
comments of India’s
BJP leader about our
beloved Prophet
(PBUH). Have said it
repeatedly India under
Modi is trampling reli-
gious freedoms & perse-
cuting Muslims. World
should take note & se-
verely reprimand In-
dia. Our love for the

lims can sacrifice their

spect of their Holy

Mumbai: The civic
body in Maharash-
tra’s cultural capi-
tal, Pune Municipal
Corporation (PMC)
will face elections
soon. However, a
lack of coordination
between the MVA al-
lies (Shiv Sena, Na-
tionalist Congress
Party and the Con-
gress) may adversely
impact their efforts
to dislodge the BJP
that rules the roost
there.
“Pune district is
an important seg-
ment, not just from
the perspective of
the PMC elections,
but also since it effec-
tively covers 3.5 Lok
Sabhaparliamentary
constituencies. The
Shiv Sena has ap-
pointed me to take
responsibility for
Pune for the forth-
coming civic elec-
tions as well as fur-
ther electoral hus-
tings in this crucial
political space. While
NCP has also simi-
larly designated its
man for the purpose
of coordinating a
common cause to
wrest the PMC from
the BJP, we are still
waiting for the Con-
gress to appoint its
nominee,” Shiv Sena
leader Sachin Ahir
confirmed.
Pune City Con-
gress Chief Ramesh
Bagwe conceded that
the Congress was
still to nominate a
representative.
“Our Maharashtra
president Nana Pa-
tole appointed a core
committee a fort-
night ago. This com-
mittee includes 15-16
members compris-
ing ex-MLAs and
eminent people’s rep-
resentatives belong-
ing to the Maratha,
Muslim, SC, ST and
OBC communities. If
regional issues are
not satisfactorily re-
solved by this core
committee, led by
senior Congress
MLA Sangram
Thopte (from Bhor
assembly constitu-
ency), then they will
be escalated to the
state president,” he
said.
While Bagwe con-
ceded that there were
a few factions exist-
ing within the Con-
gress party in the
Pune region, he said
Thopte could coordi-
nate with the Sena’s
and NCP’s nominees
onthecommoncause
of ousting the BJP
from the PMC.
“We decided in our
just concluded two-
day Nav Sankalp Shi-
vir (held in Pune), as
well as its earlier edi-
tion held in Udaipur,
that if the Narendra
Modi government is
to be defeated, then
all secular parties
have to come togeth-
er,” he said.
However, BJP’s
Vyapari Cell Chief
Mahendra Jain
points out to the ex-
isting fissures in the
MVA government.
“It has been made
amply clear by Con-
gress Maharashtra
president Nana Pa-
tole that his party is
keen to contest local
body elections such
as to the Pune Mu-
nicipality on its own
steam. That the par-
ty is yet to appoint

The BJP has given a
third Rajya Sabha term

2010 and 2016, and has
served as the leader of
the house since July
2021. It has also fielded

NCP’s chief spokes-

promoting “The Kash-

their own political
purpose.
Maharashtra was
the only state which of-
fered a safe passage to
the displaced Kashmi-
ri Pandits, while the
BJP only played with
their sentiments, Ta-
pase claimed.
“The Modi govern-

failed to protect the
lives of Hindus and
Kashmiri Pandits. As
the country’s home

Tapase said.
The rise of insur-
gency once again in

and targeting of civil-
ians there is a failure
of the intelligence ma-
chinery, he said.
Shah should person-
ally ensure the safety
of all Kashmiri citi-
zens, the NCP leader
said.
He further said the
Narendra Modi-led
BJP government had
promised a safe return
for Kashmiri Pandits
to the Valley
.
But, those promises
have turned out to be
another “jumla” (rhet-
oric) as Prime Minis-

made no concrete ef-
forts to re-establish the
Kashmiri Pandits in
their homeland, he
claimed.
The BJP should get
over religion and
caste-based politics
and ensure safety, live-
lihood and equality of
the citizens of India,
Tapase said.
On Saturday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ud-
dhav Thackeray had also expressed concern
about the “targeted killings of Hindus and
Kashmiri Pandits” in the Kashmir Valley.
Kashmiri Pandits were fleeing the Valley,
Shiv Sena president Thackeray had said. He
had also said that in 1995, when the Shiv
Sena-BJP coalition came to power in Maha-
rashtra, Sena founder Bal Thackeray ensured
a quota in educational institutes in the state
for the children of Kashmiri Pandits.

Mumbai: Shiv Sena

Sunday criticized
the ruling BJP at
the Centre, claiming
the party was busy
promoting some
movies amid the
“targeted killings of
Kashmiri Pandits
and Muslim security
personnel” in Jam-
mu and Kashmir.
Talking to reporters
here, Raut claimed the
BJP was neglecting
the Kashmir Valley’s
security
.
“Did the atrocities
against the Kashmiri
Pandits stop with sur-
gical strikes (conduct-
ed by the BJP-led cen-
tral government
across the Line of Con-
trol)? They have in-
creased,” Raut
claimed.
“There have been
targeted killings of
Hindus and Kashmiri
Pandits as well as
Muslim security per-
sonnel because they
are serving the coun-
try. The BJP is busy
promoting movies,
like ‘The Kashmir

Sena’s chief spokes-
person said.
From Srinagar to
Pulwama (in Kash-
mir), at least 20 Mus-
lim security personnel
have been killed, the
Rajya Sabha member
claimed without speci-
fying the details.
“BJP leaders are
not speaking about
this. They are
busy trying to
find ‘Shiv-

(Agra) and the

said.

If a question arises tomorrow regard-
ing whom to hand over the social

the next CM… and the CM will be ours
(NCP’s) only. The CM will say that let the so-
cial justice portfolio remain with us (NCP).
—Dhananjay Munde, Minister for Social Justice
The MVA has the support of 168 legislators in
the 288-member legislative assembly. These
include 55 of the Shiv Sena, 53 of the NCP, 44
of the Congress, eight independents and eight
from smaller parties. Apart from its 106 legisla-
tors, the BJP has the support of two legislators
from smaller parties and five independents,
taking their tally to 113. Each candidate needs
42 votes to sail through. While the BJP has
sufficient votes to have two of its candidates
elected, it will need 20 more to get its third can-
didate elected. The Shiv Sena has enough votes
to elect one of its candidates and 13 additional
ones, meaning it will rely on 11 from the NCP,
two from the Congress and 16 from other allies
to get its tally to 42 for the second candidate.

tionary container truck on the Pune-Bengaluru high-
way in Sangl, police said on Sunday. The accident
took place on Saturday afternoon when the car was
heading from Pune to Jaysingpur, they said. “Prime
facie, it seems the car was moving at a high speed as
it was severely damaged. All five of its occupants—
Arinjay Shirote (35), and his relatives Smita Shirote
(38) Purva Shirote (14), Sunesha Shirote (10) and
Viru Shirote (4)—died on the spot,” an official said.
Aurangabad: A man here allegedly bludgeoned his
50-year-old wife with a heavy utensil as he was “sus-
picious about her character”, locked the house and
fled, police said on Sunday. The victim was found
dead on Sunday morning, when her daughter came
to her place to go along with her for work, she found
the house locked. The woman was also not found at
her workplace. The victim’s daughter called up a rela-
tive, who later broke the lock of the house and found
the woman lying dead inside, an official from Satara
police station said.
Palghar: A 31-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh who
was wanted in a murder case was arrested in Sativali
near Vasai in Palghar district on Sunday, police
said. Nasir Safate had been on the run after alleg-
edly killing the husband of the woman he was in a
relationship with in Basti, an official said. Safate and
his paramour had dumped the body in a well in their
village near Basti, he added.
Colony of 400 endangered painted storks found
First India Bureau
Latur: A massive col-
ony of more than 400
painted storks has
been discovered for
the first time in La-
tur district, an offi-
cial from the Bombay
Natural History Soci-
ety (BNHS) said.
Local bird enthusiast
Dhananjay Gutte re-
cently heard loud chirp-
ings while travelling in
the catchment area of a
lake in Masalga village
under Nilanga tehsil.
When he followed the
noise, he spotted a huge
colony of the endan-
gered bird species—lo-
cally called “Saranga-
gar”—on trees nearby
and subsequently in-
formed the authorities
of his find.
On Thursday, BNHS
joint director Raju
Kasambe, some local
forestofficialsandGutte
visited the site and
found 440 big and small
painted storks and their
230 nests in the heronry
,
Gutte told reporters.
Kasambe said consid-
ering the number of
nests found, they esti-
mate that there would
be more painted storks
in the area than the
number of birds spotted
so far.
“This is the first time
such a big colony of
painted storks has been
spottedinLaturdistrict.
In Maharashtra, there
are three such bird colo-
nies, including one in
Pandharpur (in Solapur
district). The bird colo-
ny found in Latur is one
of the biggest,” he said.
Painted storks gener-
ally choose habitats
where water, food and
breeding spaces are
suitably available. Their
breeding season is from
February to June.
These birds feed on
fish, frogs, snails and
other small aquatic ani-
mals. Their waste has a
highcontentof nitrogen
and phosphorus which
can be used as crop fer-
tilizer, Gutte said.
Local farmer Gudap-
pa Dhenkare said villag-
ers have been seeing the
painted storks in the
area for five years now,
but the huge colony of
the birds was found only
recently
.
“These birds don’t
harm us or our crops. A
few days ago, someone
offered me Rs80,000 for
the wood of the acacia
trees on which these
birds live. I have decided
not to cut those trees,”
he said.

First India Bureau
Mumbai: More than
17,000 Tata Power’s
consumers in Mum-
bai have opted for
green energy (solar

said, adding that the
company’s annual
green power sales has
accounted for more
than 180 MUs (million

helped mitigate 126 KT
carbon emissions.
Net metering is a sys-
tem wherein whatever

index rates from 0 to 1 (or 0%,

top three nations in the World
are Iceland, Finland and Nor-
way and the bottom three
countries are Afghanistan,
Yemen and Iraq. India stands
at124thintheWorld.Amongst
Indian states Chhattisgarh is
top-performing state in the
gender equality parameter of
the Sustainable Development
Goals. Mizoram, Meghalaya
and Kerala are good states for
women and UP
, MP and Bihar
are not so good states.
In our country where
over three fourths of popula-
tion worship Goddesses of
different kinds, yet the status
of women and gender equali-
ty has seen ups and downs
from ancient to modern
times.Vedicsocietywasaper-

ity and the women had same
status as men in all spheres of
life. Similar conditions pre-
vailed during Epic India. The
status of women gradually
declined during the period of
Dharmashastras and Pura-
nas where the daughters were
regarded as second class citi-
zens. The Buddhist period did
witness some changes for
good of women.
TheMedievalperiodproved
to be highly disappointing for
the Indian women and their
status further deteriorated
during this period. The Mus-
lim invaders and the Brah-
manical iron laws were main
causes for such degradation.
However, during the 14th and
15th centuries, Bhakti Move-
ment introduced new trends
in the social and the religious
life of women in India. The
British were initially reluc-
tant to interfere with the so-
cial and religious customs of

The entire history of the
freedom movement is replete
with the saga of bravery

rifice and political sagacity
of thousands of women of
our country. The prominent
ones were: Bhima Bai Holkar,
Rani Laxmi Bai, Begum Haz-
rat Mahal, Kasturba Bai, Sa-
rojini Naidu etc. Since inde-
pendence, Constitutional
provisions, women-centric
legislations, social welfare
initiatives, policies, and prac-
tices have empowered women
and provided them security
against injustice and crimes
committed against them.
Women constitute the ma-

They suffer discrimination

“Gender equality implies that
women and men, and girls

not require that girls and
boys, or women and men, be
the same, or that they are
treated exactly alike.”

UKRAINE
WILL BUILD
BACK BETTER
fter 100 days of in-
tense fighting, it is
difficult to begin
thinking about re-
building Ukraine
when Russian bombs are still
raining down on innocent civil-
ians. But it is precisely during
times of crisis that we must con-
sider what comes next. Above
all, leading Western powers
need to play a central role in
supporting country’s recon-
struction.
To that end, the European
Commission recently proposed
establishing a “Rebuild
Ukraine” facility to channel
grants and loans. But Ukraine’s
large financial needs will re-
quire European Union to iden-
tify new funding sources, which
should include Russian central
bank’s frozen foreign-exchange
reserves, as well as funds previ-
ously confiscated from Russian
state enterprises. Reconstruc-
tion experts recommend looking
at the rebuilding task through
the lens of a natural disaster
such as an earthquake or a flood.
In the initial triage phase of re-
sponse, the government needs to
stop the bleeding – as Ukraine is
doing. That means fighting back
and ejecting the Russian invad-
ers from the entire country

lthough nearly all

are preventable,
heatwaves kill
thousands of peo-
ple worldwide every year. At
this very moment, an extreme
heatwave in India and Paki-
stan, affecting about one bil-
lion people, is “testing the lim-
its of human survivability
,”
warns Chandni Singh, a lead
author for the Intergovern-
mental Panel on Climate
Change’s Sixth Assessment
Report. In April, the average
maximum temperature for
northwest and central India
was the highest in 122 years.
This is not just a South
Asian problem. In recent
years, similarly extreme con-
ditions occurred in the US,
Australia, Europe, Scandina-
via, Japan, resulting in
thousands of hospitaliza-
tions and excess deaths. Ex-
treme heat is also linked to
increases in premature
births, low birthweight ba-
bies, stillbirths; reductions
in worker productivity; high-
er rates of chronic kidney
disease of unknown origin;
and increases in suicide.
Extreme temperatures are
thus an “all of society” prob-
lem. Such conditions not
only harm human health;
they also have detrimental ef-
fects on infrastructure, crop
yields, poultry mortality,
threatening livelihoods. The
2021 heat dome in Pacific
Northwest western Canada
was a case in point.
It was an event that would
have been virtually impossi-
ble without climate change.
Temperature extremes were
about 5°C above previous re-
cords, causing 1,000 excess
deaths a 69-fold increase in
heat-related hospitalizations.
Oysters were cooked in their
ocean habitats, threatening
food security and livelihoods

SURVIVING A FUTURE

Unprecedented extreme-heat episodes like the heatwave in India and
Pakistan this spring and the 2021 heat dome in the Pacific
Northwest are a preview of what awaits us on a warming planet.
Unless we improve our early-warning and response systems, the
number of excess deaths each year will increase

Kejriwal also made
four demands to

ings. The demands
include an action
plan to prevent
such incidents,
the cancellation
of bonds signed

Pandits that state
they cannot work

the fulfillment of all
their demands, and
the provision of

What do

Meanwhile, the op-

the Congress, has
slammed the Cen-
tre over the deaths.
They alleged that
the government
had failed to
provide security to
Kashmiri Pandits
forcing them out of
the valley.Maha-
rashtra CM Uddhav
Thackeray also
criticized the BJP-

“We will do what-
ever is possible for
Kashmiri Pandits,
we will not leave
them in the lurch.
I can only promise

ri Pandits in these
difficult times,” CM
Thackeray said in a
statement. He said
Kashmiri Pandits
were shown the
dream of ‘ghar

being targeted
and killed.
Killing spree
goes on
unabated
On Wednesday,
terrorists killed a
Hindu bank man-
ager in his office
in Kulgam. Hours
later, two migrant
laborers were shot
in central Kashmir.
One of them even-
tually died in the
hospital. Terrorists
also killed a Hindu
school teacher
on Tuesday. Last
week, terrorists
also shot dead
three off-duty po-
lice officers and a
television actress.
Central govt
promises
tough action
In high-level
meetings chaired
by Home Minis-
ter Amit Shah, it
was decided that
Kashmiri Pandits
would not be sent
out of Kashmir, but
would be accom-
modated in safer
places. As per
officials, the Centre
cannot be a part of
‘ethnic cleansing’
as it believes India

munities.
Kejriwal lashes
at too many
meetings
Targeting Amit
Shah for holding
meetings but not
taking substan-
tial steps on the
targeted killings in
Kashmir, Kejriwal
said, “Whenever
there is a murder
in Kashmir, it
comes in the me-
dia: Home Minister

Too many meet-
ings are being held
while people are
dying. Now, India
needs action, not
just meetings.

New Delhi: Ghulam

Sharma, the two most
vocal members of the
disgruntled Congress
leaders’ group, did not
get a Rajya Sabha seat,
and in their place two
other members- Mukul
Wasnik and Vivek
Tankha - got a chance.
Wasnik got the reward
that he was in the camp
of disgruntled leaders
but he informed Ahmed
Patel about their plans
in time. This gave the
Congress an opportu-
nity to bear that set-
back. But the question
is, for what reason did
Vivek Tankha get a
chance to go to Rajya
Sabha again?
According to sources
in the Congress, there
are two reasons for this.
The first reason is legal
compulsion. A good, re-
nowned and resource-
ful lawyer is needed for
the cases of Nehru-Gan-
dhi family. Kapil Sibal
had left the party. Ab-
hishek Manu Singhvi is
definitely with the Con-
gress but he has become
an MP in West Bengal
with the help of Trina-
mool Congress. There
are so many cases of
Mamta Banerjee’s fam-
ily and party that it will
be difficult for her to
give him time off. Chid-
ambaram is stuck in his
cases then KTS Tulsi is
not of much help in big
cases. So there was a
compulsion to keep
Tanka. Secondly, his
name was endorsed by
Kamal Nath and there-
after the Congress did
not want to take any
risk by rejecting him.
Why is Vivek Tankha repeated by Cong in RS polls?

HIGH SECURITY ALERT IN PAKISTAN CAPITAL, ADJOINING AREAS
Sharat K Verma
New Delhi: Congress
party has fielded Ajay
Maken as its candidate
from Haryana and it is
being said that former
Chief Minister Bhupin-
der Singh Hooda had
laid a condition that if
the party makes any-
one a candidate, in-
stead of Randeep Sur-
jewala and Kumari
Selja, he will ensure
their victory.
Earlier it seemed
that the party would
field a Brahmin from
Haryana and Pramod
Tiwari also went to
meet Hooda. Rajeev
Shukla was also trying
and Anand Sharma’s
name was also dis-
cussed.
Ghulam Nabi Azad
has been in charge of
Haryana, hence his
name was also being
discussed. But in the
end, the Congress de-
cided Maken’s name
and now it will be Hoo-
da’s responsibility to
ensure his victory.
Congress may have
sent Maken to Haryana
under whatever com-
pulsion, but party lead-
ers are claiming of two
advantages. First, his
is a Punjabi Khatris,
the community from
which Chief Minister
Manohar Lal Khattar
belongs.
There is a discussion
in Haryana that BJP
will not contest the
next election in the
name of Khattar. By
the time of next elec-
tion, it will be ten years
and before that BJP
will field a new leader
so that anti-incumben-
cy can be reduced. In
such a situation, Con-
gress will get the bene-
fit of Maken’s being
sent to Rajya Sabha
from the state.
Even if the BJP does
not remove Khattar, the
Congress will present a
Punjabi Khatri face.
Another advantage of
Maken is that Ashok
Tanwar, who was the
President of Congress
and now doing Aam
Aadmi Party politics, is
his brother-in-law.
So, Congress will
somehow try to neu-
tralize him with the
help of Maken.
Why was Ajay Maken sent to Haryana?

in charge of

his name was
discussed. But

With this, net out-

the MPC, Madan Sab-
navis, Chief Econo-
mist, Bank of Baroda,
said the credit policy to
be announced will be
important from the
point of view of not
just rate action but also
the RBI’s thoughts on
growth and inflation.
“The increase in
repo rate can be taken
as almost given but the
quantum may not be
more than 25-35 bps as
the earlier minutes of
the meeting held in
May indicated that the
MPC was not in favour
of a large increase in
repo rate at one shot,”
Sabnavis said.

Amid acute shortage, villagers
risk their lives for muddy water
Nashik (ANI): Amid
the scorching summer,
a village in Nashik is
facing a severe water
crisis. In Chichle-
khaire village in Na-
shik, women travel
arduous 3km treks to
fetch water. People in
the village are forced
to fetch muddy water
by going into a deep
well, where the water
level has plummeted.
“We have not have
water for a month. We
fetch water from far
away
. A man goes down
deep into a well that is
almost dry to bring up
the muddy water left at
the base. We demand
that the government to
provide us potable wa-
ter,” a villager Chhaya
Shende said.
“The women of our
village have to walk
3km every day to fetch
water. We do not have
water in our village. It
has become very diffi-
cult for us to even feed
cattle,” another vil-
lager, Kashinath
Shende, said.

Mumbai: With the
city and state contin-

COVID-19 cases, Ma-
harashtra School Ed-

day said her depart-
ment will take neces-
sary precautions
while reopening
schools in the state
around June 15, as
scheduled. The de-
partment will devise
the requisite Stand-

whether or not to
make masks manda-
tory for students
based on the COV-
ID-19 scenario next
weekend, she added.
“The past two years
have been tough for stu-
dents, and we have to
take into account their
loss in quality class-
room education, too.
For example, students
who will enter Class II
have never attended
schools,” Gaikwad said.
She said measured
steps need to be taken
taking into account the
safety and wellbeing of
students as well as en-
suring that there is no
further loss in the qual-
ity of education.
“Sporting masks will
also help protect stu-
dents and they are ad-
vised to use masks
when the classes start,”
she said, adding that a
final decision will be
taken following discus-
sions with the state

its recommendations.
Meanwhile, the state
reported more than
1,000 new cases of COV-
ID-19 for the fifth con-
secutive across on Sun-

new cases and one
death. With this, Maha-

After Mumbai, neigh-

ported 960 active cases,
followed by Pune with

and 10 cases in coastal

cases, 95% are asymp-
tomatic, while 44 had to
be hospitalized; four of
these were put on oxy-

ment said. However,
despite the directives
of the BMC Commis-

testing from 8,000-odd
to 40,000 per day, the
civic body carried out
only 8,778 tests.

GEARING UP FOR MONSOON SEASON

Bengaluru (PTI):
Mumbai will strive to
return to their glory
days in the Ranji Tro-
phy quarterfinal
against Uttarakhand,
beginning here from
Monday
.
By the time the hilly
state--looking to scale
new heights with a new
generation of players-
-came into existence
nearly 22 years ago, the
heavyweights had won
the country’s premier
domestictournamentan
unprecedented 34 times.
From 2000 to 2022,
Mumbai had placed an-
other seven humongous
title-winning cups in
their trophy cabinet.
However, Mumbai’s
entry into the quarterfi-
nals of this edition was
far from smooth as they
just about made it after
Saurashtra failed to
win with a bonus point
in their last group
match against Goa.
Nevertheless, the 41-
time winners are the
firm favourites heading
into their latest chal-
lenge.
Mumbai will bank on
their skipper Prithvi
Shaw to lead from the
front as the diminutive
right-handed batter
has the ability to take
the inexperienced Utta-
rakhand attack to the
task at the Alur Cricket
Stadium II.
Mumbai have a set of
relatively new batters,
includingArmanJaffer,
Bhupen Lalwani and
Hardik Tamore, who
will need to play their
roles well. However, the
two players who can
make a big impact are
young opener Yashasvi
Jaiswal and Sarfaraz
Khan, the latter of
which has pulled Mum-
bai out of trouble on
many occasions and
will again look to an-
chor the innings.
Ditto for Jaiswal, in
whom the team manage-
ment and coach Amol
Mazumdarhavereposed
faith time and again.
Batter-keeper Aditya
Tare will need to shoul-
der more responsibility
along with left-arm
spinning all-rounder
Shams Mulani, who
grabbed 11 wickets in
the team’s last league
game against Goa.
Off-spinner Kotian
could be preferred over

oga is the most
beautiful art
developed by
man. Yoga is
not limited to
only physical
exercise, aero-
bics or pranayama, it is
the sum of all life-en-
hancing qualities. We
play in the lap of the
mother, who are nur-
tured by nature and
who have descended on
the earth long before
the human race in the
journey of life develop-
ment, yoga is not a mat-
ter of life, it is total life.
Doing Pranayama on a
regular basis not only
hashealthbenefitsbyfix-
ing the blood circulation,
Pranayama also helps in
the smooth functioning
of the endocrine glands.
Diseases like diabetes,
thyroid, high blood pres-
sure, obesity, brain dis-
eases like depression,
tremors, etc. be con-
trolled with pranayama
and breathing.
Get up due to which
the muscle is pressed
down and the length of
time increases and the
pressure in the lungs de-
creases and oxygen en-
ters inside the lungs,
through pranayama we
can take slow and deep
breaths.
Importance of Pra-
nayama in our life for
the supply of oxygen:
Treatment of many
diseases is possible
through yogasana and
pranayama and medi-
tation like Bhastrika
Pranayama Sheeta-
li Pranayama
Sheetkari Pranay-
ama. Bhastrika Pra-
nayama is very good
for any problem re-
lated to lungs. By do-
ing Bhastrika Pra-
nayama, maximum oxy-
gen expands well in our
lungs and carbon diox-
ide comes out.
SAVE SOIL
Yoga itself is eco yoga.
Life in our contempo-
rary world is shrinking
as non-human species
are under complete
stress, many species
have become extinct and
many are on the verge of
extinction. The accom-
panying events are the
health and well-being of
the whole life and the
health and well-being of
mankind are linked on
the same axis.
Last year Yoga Day
was celebrated in the
midst of an epidemic,
this time we have got a
lesson that how the
lack of oxygen can
change our life cycle.
Oxygen is formed by
photosynthesis, for
which our surround-
ings should be full of
trees and plants. There
should be forests throb-
bing with diversity, our
seas, rivers, all hold
clean water, our soil
should be healthy, our
environment should be
free from toxic gases.
Let our life systems
follow the situational
development, this yoga
of our karma is Eco
Yoga i.e. circumstance
yoga.
IMPORTANCE
OF SOIL IN
NATUROPATHY
It is believed that the
body is an effigy of soil
and diseases of the body
can be removed only by
the use of soil. Mud ther-
apy is used to provide
coolness to the body
, the
soil absorbs and absorbs
the contaminated ele-
ments of the body and
removes it from the body
,
itsmaintreatmentismud
bandage and mud bath.
By planting more and
more trees, measures
will have to be taken to
protect them and pre-
vent them from being
cut down because our
world has been hit by
oxygen during the Coro-
na period. The coordina-
tion between human and
nature is yoga, the more
we plant trees, the more
oxygen we can take natu-
rally Even if we plant
trees, we would never
have to buy oxygen and
plant it.
We have to under-
stand the importance
of food and pranayama
yoga in our life and use
it as our daily routine.
Oxygen is necessary for
life, if there is no
oxygen then
life will
end, so to
save oxy-
gen, trees
have to be
saved!

  • 1. REMARK ON PROPHET MUHAMMED BJP SUSPENDS Nupur Sharma, Naveen Jindal Moni Sharma New Delhi: The BJP on Sunday suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and ex- pelled its Delhi media head Naveen Kumar Jindal for their alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Mu- hammad, as it sought to defuse row over issue. Amid protests by Muslim groups over the remarks, party also is- sued a statement aimed at assuaging the con- cerns of minorities and distancing itself from these members, assert- ing that it respects all religions and strongly denounces insult of any religious personality . THE SUSPENSION While Sharma's com- ments during a TV de- bate aimed at the found- er of Islam have drawn ire of Muslim groups, Jindal also posted objec- tionable tweets, deleted later, and has been ac- cused of often posting inciting comments. Their comments also sparked a Twitter trend calling for boycotting Indian products in some countries. I TAKE MY WORDS BACK, SAYS NUPUR Nupur Sharma took to Twitter to issue an apology. She wrote, “If my words have caused discomfort or hurt religious feelings of anyone whatsoever, I hereby uncondition- ally withdraw my statement. It was never my intention to hurt anyone’s religious feelings.” JINDAL: NO INTENTION TO HURT SENTIMENTS Naveen Kumar Jindal said that he was una- ware of being expelled from BJP and was yet to receive any letter from the state presi- dent. Jindal also said he had tweeted asking a question to those attacking and insulting Hindu deities and it was not aimed at hurting the religious sentiments of any community. Nupur Sharma Naveen K Jindal BJP SAYS IT RESPECTS ALL RELIGIONS New Delhi: BJP on Sunday stated that it “respects all religions” and is “strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion”. “The BJP strongly denounces insult of any religious personali- ties of any religion. BJP is also against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion. The BJP does not promote such people or philosophy,” the BJP said in a statement issued by its general secretary Arun Singh on Sunday. “During the thousands of years of the history of India every religion has blossomed and flourished. The BJP respects all religions,” the brief statement said. QATAR, KUWAIT & IRAN SUMMON INDIAN ENVOYS Qatar, Kuwait & Iran on Sunday sum- moned India’s Ambassadors and handed over to them protest notes on what the Gulf countries called categorical “rejection and condemnation” of the con- troversial remarks of a BJP leader against Prophet Mohammed. The controversial remarks also sparked a Twitter trend in the Arab world calling for a boycott of Indian products. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu is currently visiting Qatar and on Sunday he met Qatar’s PM and Interior Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani. CONG LASHES OUT AT BJP OVER REMARKS Soon after BJP on Sunday suspended its spokesperson Nupur Sharma from par- ty’s primary membership and expelled its Delhi media head Naveen Kumar Jindal after their alleged controversial remarks on religious minorities, Congress General Secretary Ran- deep Singh Surjewala lashed out at the BJP by saying that “it is nothing but a blatantly counterfeit pretence and sham attempt at damage control.” I condemn in strongest possible words hurtful comments of India’s BJP leader about our beloved Prophet (PBUH). Have said it repeatedly India under Modi is trampling reli- gious freedoms & perse- cuting Muslims. World should take note & se- verely reprimand In- dia. Our love for the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is supreme. All Mus- lims can sacrifice their life for the Love & Re- spect of their Holy Prophet (PBUH). Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan Prime Minister Reaction in Arab world must have really stung. BJP’s ‘suddenly wak- ing up’ has nothing to do with having ‘offend- ed’ sentiments of Mus- lims in the country but is aimed at an interna- tional audience. This apology of a statement is aimed at an interna- tional audience. Omar Abdullah, Vice President JKNC Bareilly (ANI): The Ba- reilly administration has imposed Section 144 in the aftermath of the Kanpur violence and as a precautionary meas- ure ahead of a huge pro- test to be held on June 10 as announced by Mus- lim cleric Tauqir Raza. As per the adminis- tration, not more than five persons would be allowed to assemble in a public place. Protests would also be prohibit- ed during this period. Section 144 has been imposed till July 3 to avoid any untoward situation like the one that erupted in Kanpur on Friday. Meanwhile, all accused, including key conspirator Hayat Zafar Hashmi, were sent to 14-day judicial remand on Sunday in connection with the Kanpur violence case. ❍ KANPUR VIOLENCE AFTERMATH SECTION 144 IN BAREILLY TILL JULY 3 n Tauqir Raza calls for protest on June 10 n All accused sent to 14-day judicial remand Police stand guard at Parade Chauraha area in Kanpur on Sunday. SIT FORMED, SECURITY BEEFED UP Kanpur: SIT was formed and security has been beefed up between Yateem Khana and Parade crossroads while the accused were interrogated, informed the officials on Sunday. SRK, KATRINA COVID +VE; BMC’S ALERT TO FILM STUDIOS Mumbai: With Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif reportedly testing positive for COVID-19, the BMC has instructed film stu- dios to not host parties. Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis has contracted the virus for the second time. On Sunday, the former CM tweeted: “I have tested #COVID19 positive and in home isolation. Taking medication & treatment as per the doctor’s advice.” DREADFUL SUNDAY 25 PILGRIMS DIE AS BUS FALLS INTO GORGE IN UTTARKASHI DIST Dhaka: At least 49 people have died after a huge fire broke out at a shipping container depot in Bangladesh's Chittagong last night, officials said on Sunday. The fire at the depot in Sitakunda area has left about 300 people injured and authorities fear the death count may climb. Accord- ing to police officer Nurul Alam, posted at Chittagong Medical College Hosp's police outpost, preliminary probe has indicated that fire broke out due to chemical reaction. 49 KILLED, 300 INJURED IN MASSIVE FIRE IN BANGLADESH Dehradun: Twenty- five people were killed after a bus carrying pilgrims fell into a gorge in Uttarakhand on Sunday. The bus, with 28 passengers, was en route Yamu- notri, a major pilgrim spot in the hill state. PM MODI ANNOUNCES `2 LAKH EX-GRATIA FOR KIN OF DECEASED, `50K FOR EACH INJURED Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences to those “who have lost their loved ones” in the accident. Prime Minister Modi has also announced a compensation of `2 lakh each for the fami- lies of those who lost their lives in the accident and `50,000 each for the injured in a bus accident in Uttarakhand. Pushkar S Dhami reaches Disaster Control Room in Dehradun on Sunday night. (L) Bus with 28 passengers was en route Yamunotri. Union Home Minister Amit Shah condoled the deaths of pilgrims. He tweeted (in Hindi), “It is very sad to hear about the bus of devo- tees falling into the gorge in Uttarakhand. I have spoken to the Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami on this. Local administration and SDRF teams are engaged in rescue work and the injured are being taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. NDRF is also reaching there soon.” AMIT SHAH CONDOLES DEATHS OF PILGRIMS SHIV SENA-NCP AWAITS CONGRESS NOMINEE FOR PUNE ALLIANCE Renni Abraham Mumbai: The civic body in Maharash- tra’s cultural capi- tal, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will face elections soon. However, a lack of coordination between the MVA al- lies (Shiv Sena, Na- tionalist Congress Party and the Con- gress) may adversely impact their efforts to dislodge the BJP that rules the roost there. “Pune district is an important seg- ment, not just from the perspective of the PMC elections, but also since it effec- tively covers 3.5 Lok Sabhaparliamentary constituencies. The Shiv Sena has ap- pointed me to take responsibility for Pune for the forth- coming civic elec- tions as well as fur- ther electoral hus- tings in this crucial political space. While NCP has also simi- larly designated its man for the purpose of coordinating a common cause to wrest the PMC from the BJP, we are still waiting for the Con- gress to appoint its nominee,” Shiv Sena leader Sachin Ahir confirmed. Pune City Con- gress Chief Ramesh Bagwe conceded that the Congress was still to nominate a representative. “Our Maharashtra president Nana Pa- tole appointed a core committee a fort- night ago. This com- mittee includes 15-16 members compris- ing ex-MLAs and eminent people’s rep- resentatives belong- ing to the Maratha, Muslim, SC, ST and OBC communities. If regional issues are not satisfactorily re- solved by this core committee, led by senior Congress MLA Sangram Thopte (from Bhor assembly constitu- ency), then they will be escalated to the state president,” he said. While Bagwe con- ceded that there were a few factions exist- ing within the Con- gress party in the Pune region, he said Thopte could coordi- nate with the Sena’s and NCP’s nominees onthecommoncause of ousting the BJP from the PMC. “We decided in our just concluded two- day Nav Sankalp Shi- vir (held in Pune), as well as its earlier edi- tion held in Udaipur, that if the Narendra Modi government is to be defeated, then all secular parties have to come togeth- er,” he said. However, BJP’s Vyapari Cell Chief Mahendra Jain points out to the ex- isting fissures in the MVA government. “It has been made amply clear by Con- gress Maharashtra president Nana Pa- tole that his party is keen to contest local body elections such as to the Pune Mu- nicipality on its own steam. That the par- ty is yet to appoint its Pune coordinator to combine efforts with its alliance partners is proof of the Congress being disinclined to an al- liance arrangement in the region,” he said. lll Pune Municipal Corporation elections are due soon but Cong is yet to appoint a nominee to coordinate with Shiv Sena and NCP to wrest PMC from the BJP Ajit Pawar Devendra Fadnavis Uddhav Thackeray Maharashtra BJP Leader Devendra Fad- navis tests Positive

NCP’s chief spokes- person Mahesh Ta- pase, whose party shares power with the Shiv Sena and Con- gress in Maharash- tra, in a statement also said that BJP leaders were busy promoting “The Kash- mir Files” (movie) for their own political purpose. Maharashtra was the only state which of- fered a safe passage to the displaced Kashmi- ri Pandits, while the BJP only played with their sentiments, Ta- pase claimed. “The Modi govern- ment has miserably failed to protect the lives of Hindus and Kashmiri Pandits. As the country’s home minister, it is the duty of Amit Shah to pro- tect the lives of citi- zens of the country,” Tapase said. The rise of insur- gency once again in the Kashmir Valley and targeting of civil- ians there is a failure of the intelligence ma- chinery, he said. Shah should person- ally ensure the safety of all Kashmiri citi- zens, the NCP leader said. He further said the Narendra Modi-led BJP government had promised a safe return for Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley . But, those promises have turned out to be another “jumla” (rhet- oric) as Prime Minis- ter Modi’s government made no concrete ef- forts to re-establish the Kashmiri Pandits in their homeland, he claimed. The BJP should get over religion and caste-based politics and ensure safety, live- lihood and equality of the citizens of India, Tapase said. On Saturday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ud- dhav Thackeray had also expressed concern about the “targeted killings of Hindus and Kashmiri Pandits” in the Kashmir Valley. Kashmiri Pandits were fleeing the Valley, Shiv Sena president Thackeray had said. He had also said that in 1995, when the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition came to power in Maha- rashtra, Sena founder Bal Thackeray ensured a quota in educational institutes in the state for the children of Kashmiri Pandits. They have in- creased,” Raut claimed. “There have been targeted killings of Hindus and Kashmiri Pandits as well as Muslim security per- sonnel because they are serving the coun- try. The BJP is busy promoting movies, like ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘Samrat Prithiviraj’,” the Shiv Sena’s chief spokes- person said. From Srinagar to Pulwama (in Kash- mir), at least 20 Mus- lim security personnel have been killed, the Rajya Sabha member claimed without speci- fying the details. “BJP leaders are not speaking about this. They are busy trying to find ‘Shiv- ling’ in the Taj Mahal (Agra) and the G y a n v a p i mosque (in Va r a n a - si),” he said. Apart from its 106 legisla- tors, the BJP has the support of two legislators from smaller parties and five independents, taking their tally to 113. Each candidate needs 42 votes to sail through. While the BJP has sufficient votes to have two of its candidates elected, it will need 20 more to get its third can- didate elected. The Shiv Sena has enough votes to elect one of its candidates and 13 additional ones, meaning it will rely on 11 from the NCP, two from the Congress and 16 from other allies to get its tally to 42 for the second candidate. Kasambe said consid- ering the number of nests found, they esti- mate that there would be more painted storks in the area than the number of birds spotted so far. “This is the first time such a big colony of painted storks has been spottedinLaturdistrict. In Maharashtra, there are three such bird colo- nies, including one in Pandharpur (in Solapur district). The bird colo- ny found in Latur is one of the biggest,” he said. Painted storks gener- ally choose habitats where water, food and breeding spaces are suitably available. Their breeding season is from February to June. These birds feed on fish, frogs, snails and other small aquatic ani- mals. Their waste has a highcontentof nitrogen and phosphorus which can be used as crop fer- tilizer, Gutte said. Local farmer Gudap- pa Dhenkare said villag- ers have been seeing the painted storks in the area for five years now, but the huge colony of the birds was found only recently . “These birds don’t harm us or our crops. A few days ago, someone offered me Rs80,000 for the wood of the acacia trees on which these birds live. I have decided not to cut those trees,” he said. Similar conditions pre- vailed during Epic India. The status of women gradually declined during the period of Dharmashastras and Pura- nas where the daughters were regarded as second class citi- zens. The Buddhist period did witness some changes for good of women. TheMedievalperiodproved to be highly disappointing for the Indian women and their status further deteriorated during this period. The Mus- lim invaders and the Brah- manical iron laws were main causes for such degradation. However, during the 14th and 15th centuries, Bhakti Move- ment introduced new trends in the social and the religious life of women in India. The British were initially reluc- tant to interfere with the so- cial and religious customs of thedifferentreligiouscommu- nities, but several social re- formerslikeRajaRamMohan Roy , Ishwar Chandra Vidyasa- gar, and Jyotiba Phule fought for women’s right, education andprevailedonBritishtoput an end to the evil customs and traditions of the society . The prominent ones were: Bhima Bai Holkar, Rani Laxmi Bai, Begum Haz- rat Mahal, Kasturba Bai, Sa- rojini Naidu etc. Since inde- pendence, Constitutional provisions, women-centric legislations, social welfare initiatives, policies, and prac- tices have empowered women and provided them security against injustice and crimes committed against them.  Women constitute the ma- jority of the world’s popula- tion, but there is still no soci- ety in which women enjoy full equalitywithmen.Theyoften face specific discrimination, evenincountrieswhichgrant legal equality to both sexes. They suffer discrimination and economic disadvantages. “Gender equality implies that women and men, and girls and boys, enjoy the same rights, resources, opportuni- ties, and protections. SPIRITUAL SPEAK We behold what we are, and we are what we behold. —Bhagavad Gita IN-DEPTH UKRAINE WILL BUILD BACK BETTER fter 100 days of in- tense fighting, it is difficult to begin thinking about re- building Ukraine when Russian bombs are still raining down on innocent civil- ians. But it is precisely during times of crisis that we must con- sider what comes next. Above all, leading Western powers need to play a central role in supporting country’s recon- struction. To that end, the European Commission recently proposed establishing a “Rebuild Ukraine” facility to channel grants and loans. But Ukraine’s large financial needs will re- quire European Union to iden- tify new funding sources, which should include Russian central bank’s frozen foreign-exchange reserves, as well as funds previ- ously confiscated from Russian state enterprises. Reconstruc- tion experts recommend looking at the rebuilding task through the lens of a natural disaster such as an earthquake or a flood. In the initial triage phase of re- sponse, the government needs to stop the bleeding – as Ukraine is doing. That means fighting back and ejecting the Russian invad- ers from the entire country . Source: Project Syndicate TOP TWEETS A lthough nearly all heat-relateddeaths are preventable, heatwaves kill thousands of peo- ple worldwide every year. At this very moment, an extreme heatwave in India and Paki- stan, affecting about one bil- lion people, is “testing the lim- its of human survivability ,” warns Chandni Singh, a lead author for the Intergovern- mental Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Report. In April, the average maximum temperature for northwest and central India was the highest in 122 years. This is not just a South Asian problem. In recent years, similarly extreme con- ditions occurred in the US, Australia, Europe, Scandina- via, Japan, resulting in thousands of hospitaliza- tions and excess deaths. Ex- treme heat is also linked to increases in premature births, low birthweight ba- bies, stillbirths; reductions in worker productivity; high- er rates of chronic kidney disease of unknown origin; and increases in suicide. Extreme temperatures are thus an “all of society” prob- lem. Such conditions not only harm human health; they also have detrimental ef- fects on infrastructure, crop yields, poultry mortality, threatening livelihoods. The 2021 heat dome in Pacific Northwest western Canada was a case in point. It was an event that would have been virtually impossi- ble without climate change. Temperature extremes were about 5°C above previous re- cords, causing 1,000 excess deaths a 69-fold increase in heat-related hospitalizations. Oysters were cooked in their ocean habitats, threatening food security and livelihoods for indigenous people. Source: Project Syndicate SURVIVING A FUTURE OF EXTREME HEAT Unprecedented extreme-heat episodes like the heatwave in India and Pakistan this spring and the 2021 heat dome in the Pacific Northwest are a preview of what awaits us on a warming planet. They alleged that the government had failed to provide security to Kashmiri Pandits forcing them out of the valley.Maha- rashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray also criticized the BJP- led central govern- ment for putting the community in danger. ‘Pandits shown hollow ‘ghar vapasi’ dream’ “We will do what- ever is possible for Kashmiri Pandits, we will not leave them in the lurch. I can only promise that Maharashtra will stand firmly behind the Kashmi- ri Pandits in these difficult times,” CM Thackeray said in a statement. He said Kashmiri Pandits were shown the dream of ‘ghar vapasi’, but are being targeted and killed. Killing spree goes on unabated On Wednesday, terrorists killed a Hindu bank man- ager in his office in Kulgam. Hours later, two migrant laborers were shot in central Kashmir. One of them even- tually died in the hospital. Terrorists also killed a Hindu school teacher on Tuesday. Last week, terrorists also shot dead three off-duty po- lice officers and a television actress. Central govt promises tough action In high-level meetings chaired by Home Minis- ter Amit Shah, it was decided that Kashmiri Pandits would not be sent out of Kashmir, but would be accom- modated in safer places. As per officials, the Centre cannot be a part of ‘ethnic cleansing’ as it believes India is a society with diverse cultures and different com- munities. Kejriwal lashes at too many meetings Targeting Amit Shah for holding meetings but not taking substan- tial steps on the targeted killings in Kashmir, Kejriwal said, “Whenever there is a murder in Kashmir, it comes in the me- dia: Home Minister called a meeting. DELHI CHIEF MINISTER KEJRIWAL UPS THE ANTE FROM JANTAR MANTAR Mahesh Sharma New Delhi: Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma, the two most vocal members of the disgruntled Congress leaders’ group, did not get a Rajya Sabha seat, and in their place two other members- Mukul Wasnik and Vivek Tankha - got a chance. Wasnik got the reward that he was in the camp of disgruntled leaders but he informed Ahmed Patel about their plans in time. This gave the Congress an opportu- nity to bear that set- back. But the question is, for what reason did Vivek Tankha get a chance to go to Rajya Sabha again? According to sources in the Congress, there are two reasons for this. The first reason is legal compulsion. A good, re- nowned and resource- ful lawyer is needed for the cases of Nehru-Gan- dhi family. Kapil Sibal had left the party. Ab- hishek Manu Singhvi is definitely with the Con- gress but he has become an MP in West Bengal with the help of Trina- mool Congress. There are so many cases of Mamta Banerjee’s fam- ily and party that it will be difficult for her to give him time off. Chid- ambaram is stuck in his cases then KTS Tulsi is not of much help in big cases. So there was a compulsion to keep Tanka. Secondly, his name was endorsed by Kamal Nath and there- after the Congress did not want to take any risk by rejecting him. Why is Vivek Tankha repeated by Cong in RS polls? ‘LEGAL COMPULSIONS’ lll Senior lawyer Vijay Tankha’s name was endorsed by Kamal Nath and thereafter the Congress did not want to take any risk by rejecting him 7 girls drown in pit in Tamil Nadu village Kuchipalayam: Seven girls, aged 10 to 18, drowned in a deep pit filled with water near a check dam built across the Gedilam river at Kuchipalayam near Cuddalore on Sunday . Earlier it seemed that the party would field a Brahmin from Haryana and Pramod Tiwari also went to meet Hooda. Rajeev Shukla was also trying and Anand Sharma’s name was also dis- cussed. Ghulam Nabi Azad has been in charge of Haryana, hence his name was also being discussed. But in the end, the Congress de- cided Maken’s name and now it will be Hoo- da’s responsibility to ensure his victory. Congress may have sent Maken to Haryana under whatever com- pulsion, but party lead- ers are claiming of two advantages. First, his is a Punjabi Khatris, the community from which Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar belongs. There is a discussion in Haryana that BJP will not contest the next election in the name of Khattar. By the time of next elec- tion, it will be ten years and before that BJP will field a new leader so that anti-incumben- cy can be reduced. In such a situation, Con- gress will get the bene- fit of Maken’s being sent to Rajya Sabha from the state. Even if the BJP does not remove Khattar, the Congress will present a Punjabi Khatri face. Another advantage of Maken is that Ashok Tanwar, who was the President of Congress and now doing Aam Aadmi Party politics, is his brother-in-law. So, Congress will somehow try to neu- tralize him with the help of Maken. Why was Ajay Maken sent to Haryana? lll Ghulam Nabi Azad has been in charge of Haryana, hence his name was discussed. There are specula- tions that the central bank may go for at least 35 bps hike over and above the 40 bps hike effected last month af- ter an off-cycle MPC meeting. Experts are expecting more hikes in repo rate in the com- ing months. Governor Das-headed MPC will meet for three day be- ginning Monday. The retail inflation, which RBI factors in while arriving at its monetary policy, gal- loped for a seventh straightmonthtotouch an 8-year high of 7.79% in April, mainly on ac- count of surging com- modity prices, includ- ing fuel, due to ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The wholesale price- based inflation has re- mained in double digits for 13 months and touched a record high of 15.08% in April. Recently in a TV in- terview, the governor said that the “expecta- tion of rate hike is a no- brainer, there will be some increase in the repo rates, but by how much I will not be able to tell now but to say that 5.15 may not be very accurate”. On expectation from the MPC, Madan Sab- navis, Chief Econo- mist, Bank of Baroda, said the credit policy to be announced will be important from the point of view of not just rate action but also the RBI’s thoughts on growth and inflation. “The increase in repo rate can be taken as almost given but the quantum may not be more than 25-35 bps as the earlier minutes of the meeting held in May indicated that the MPC was not in favour of a large increase in repo rate at one shot,” Sabnavis said. In the office mem- orandum, the DIPAM said that the Cabinet had empowered the boards of holding/par- ent PSEs “to undertake transactions for disin- vestments /closure of subsidiaries/units/ sale of stakes in JVs, including for such cases, where ‘in-prin- ciple’ approval by the CCEA/AM has been accorded”.

In Chichle- khaire village in Na- shik, women travel arduous 3km treks to fetch water. People in the village are forced to fetch muddy water by going into a deep well, where the water level has plummeted. “We have not have water for a month. We fetch water from far away . A man goes down deep into a well that is almost dry to bring up the muddy water left at the base. We demand that the government to provide us potable wa- ter,” a villager Chhaya Shende said. “The women of our village have to walk 3km every day to fetch water. We do not have water in our village. It has become very diffi- cult for us to even feed cattle,” another vil- lager, Kashinath Shende, said. The de- partment will devise the requisite Stand- ard Operating Proce- dure and decide on whether or not to make masks manda- tory for students based on the COV- ID-19 scenario next weekend, she added. “The past two years have been tough for stu- dents, and we have to take into account their loss in quality class- room education, too. For example, students who will enter Class II have never attended schools,” Gaikwad said. She said measured steps need to be taken taking into account the safety and wellbeing of students as well as en- suring that there is no further loss in the qual- ity of education. “Sporting masks will also help protect stu- dents and they are ad- vised to use masks when the classes start,” she said, adding that a final decision will be taken following discus- sions with the state task force and based on its recommendations. Meanwhile, the state reported more than 1,000 new cases of COV- ID-19 for the fifth con- secutive across on Sun- day, when it saw 1,494 new cases and one death. With this, Maha- rashtra has 6,767 active cases, with Mumbai ac- counting for 4,880--up from 4,294 on Saturday- -data from the state health department showed. After Mumbai, neigh- bouring Thane has re- ported 960 active cases, followed by Pune with 501 active cases, Raigad with 167 cases, Palghar district with 100 cases and 10 cases in coastal Sindhudurg district. The data from Bri- hanmumbai Municipal Corporation showed that new cases in Mum- bai went up from 889 cases on Saturday to 961 cases, and one more p a n d e m i c - r e l a t e d death was reported on Sunday. Of the new cases, 95% are asymp- tomatic, while 44 had to be hospitalized; four of these were put on oxy- gen, the health depart- ment said. However, despite the directives of the BMC Commis- sioner Iqbal Singh Cha- hal to ramp up daily testing from 8,000-odd to 40,000 per day, the civic body carried out only 8,778 tests. By the time the hilly state--looking to scale new heights with a new generation of players- -came into existence nearly 22 years ago, the heavyweights had won the country’s premier domestictournamentan unprecedented 34 times. From 2000 to 2022, Mumbai had placed an- other seven humongous title-winning cups in their trophy cabinet. However, Mumbai’s entry into the quarterfi- nals of this edition was far from smooth as they just about made it after Saurashtra failed to win with a bonus point in their last group match against Goa. Nevertheless, the 41- time winners are the firm favourites heading into their latest chal- lenge. Mumbai will bank on their skipper Prithvi Shaw to lead from the front as the diminutive right-handed batter has the ability to take the inexperienced Utta- rakhand attack to the task at the Alur Cricket Stadium II. Mumbai have a set of relatively new batters, includingArmanJaffer, Bhupen Lalwani and Hardik Tamore, who will need to play their roles well. However, the two players who can make a big impact are young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan, the latter of which has pulled Mum- bai out of trouble on many occasions and will again look to an- chor the innings. Ditto for Jaiswal, in whom the team manage- ment and coach Amol Mazumdarhavereposed faith time and again. Batter-keeper Aditya Tare will need to shoul- der more responsibility along with left-arm spinning all-rounder Shams Mulani, who grabbed 11 wickets in the team’s last league game against Goa. Off-spinner Kotian could be preferred over seniorpro,ShashankAt- tarde, given his ability with the bat. Mumbai have a de- cent pace attack, led by the seasoned Dhawal Kulkarni, who will have company in Tush- ar Deshpande. Yoga is not limited to only physical exercise, aero- bics or pranayama, it is the sum of all life-en- hancing qualities. We play in the lap of the mother, who are nur- tured by nature and who have descended on the earth long before the human race in the journey of life develop- ment, yoga is not a mat- ter of life, it is total life. Doing Pranayama on a regular basis not only hashealthbenefitsbyfix- ing the blood circulation, Pranayama also helps in the smooth functioning of the endocrine glands. Diseases like diabetes, thyroid, high blood pres- sure, obesity, brain dis- eases like depression, tremors, etc. be con- trolled with pranayama and breathing. Get up due to which the muscle is pressed down and the length of time increases and the pressure in the lungs de- creases and oxygen en- ters inside the lungs, through pranayama we can take slow and deep breaths. Importance of Pra- nayama in our life for the supply of oxygen: Treatment of many diseases is possible through yogasana and pranayama and medi- tation like Bhastrika Pranayama Sheeta- li Pranayama Sheetkari Pranay- ama. Bhastrika Pra- nayama is very good for any problem re- lated to lungs. By do- ing Bhastrika Pra- nayama, maximum oxy- gen expands well in our lungs and carbon diox- ide comes out. SAVE SOIL Yoga itself is eco yoga. Life in our contempo- rary world is shrinking as non-human species are under complete stress, many species have become extinct and many are on the verge of extinction. The accom- panying events are the health and well-being of the whole life and the health and well-being of mankind are linked on the same axis. Last year Yoga Day was celebrated in the midst of an epidemic, this time we have got a lesson that how the lack of oxygen can change our life cycle. Oxygen is formed by photosynthesis, for which our surround- ings should be full of trees and plants. There should be forests throb- bing with diversity, our seas, rivers, all hold clean water, our soil should be healthy, our environment should be free from toxic gases. Let our life systems follow the situational development, this yoga of our karma is Eco Yoga i.e. circumstance yoga. IMPORTANCE OF SOIL IN NATUROPATHY It is believed that the body is an effigy of soil and diseases of the body can be removed only by the use of soil. Mud ther- apy is used to provide coolness to the body , the soil absorbs and absorbs the contaminated ele- ments of the body and removes it from the body , itsmaintreatmentismud bandage and mud bath. By planting more and more trees, measures will have to be taken to protect them and pre- vent them from being cut down because our world has been hit by oxygen during the Coro- na period. The coordina- tion between human and nature is yoga, the more we plant trees, the more oxygen we can take natu- rally Even if we plant trees, we would never have to buy oxygen and plant it. We have to under- stand the importance of food and pranayama yoga in our life and use it as our daily routine. Oxygen is necessary for life, if there is no oxygen then life will end, so to save oxy- gen, trees have to be saved!
