The BJP suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled its Delhi media head Naveen Kumar Jindal for their alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad. This led to protests by Muslim groups in India and other countries. In response, the BJP issued a statement asserting that it respects all religions and strongly denounces insults of any religious personality. Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal apologized for their comments. Qatar, Kuwait, Iran and Pakistan condemned the remarks and summoned Indian envoys. The controversy sparked tensions in India as Section 144 was imposed in some areas to prevent protests.

New Delhi: The BJP on
Sunday suspended its
national spokesperson
Nupur Sharma and ex-
pelled its Delhi media
head Naveen Kumar
Jindal for their alleged
derogatory remarks
against Prophet Mu-
hammad, as it sought to
defuse row over issue.
Amid protests by
Muslim groups over the
remarks, party also is-
sued a statement aimed
at assuaging the con-
cerns of minorities and
distancing itself from
these members, assert-
ing that it respects all
religions and strongly

.
THE SUSPENSION
While Sharma's com-
ments during a TV de-
bate aimed at the found-
er of Islam have drawn
ire of Muslim groups,
Jindal also posted objec-
tionable tweets, deleted
later, and has been ac-
cused of often posting
inciting comments.
Their comments also
sparked a Twitter trend
calling for boycotting
Indian products in some
countries.
I TAKE MY WORDS
BACK, SAYS NUPUR
Nupur Sharma took to Twitter to issue an
apology. She wrote, “If my words have
caused discomfort or hurt religious feelings
of anyone whatsoever, I hereby uncondition-
ally withdraw my statement. It was never my
intention to hurt anyone’s religious feelings.”
JINDAL: NO INTENTION
TO HURT SENTIMENTS
Naveen Kumar Jindal said that he was una-
ware of being expelled from BJP and was
yet to receive any letter from the state presi-
dent. Jindal also said he had tweeted asking
a question to those attacking and insulting
Hindu deities and it was not aimed at hurting
the religious sentiments of any community.

BJP SAYS IT RESPECTS ALL RELIGIONS
New Delhi: BJP on Sunday stated that it “respects all religions” and is
“strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or
religion”. “The BJP strongly denounces insult of any religious personali-
ties of any religion. BJP is also against any ideology which insults or
demeans any sect or religion. The BJP does not promote such people or
philosophy,” the BJP said in a statement issued by its general secretary
Arun Singh on Sunday. “During the thousands of years of the
history of India every religion has blossomed and flourished.
The BJP respects all religions,” the brief statement said.

SUMMON INDIAN ENVOYS
Qatar, Kuwait & Iran on Sunday sum-
moned India’s Ambassadors and
handed over to them protest notes on
what the Gulf countries called categorical
“rejection and condemnation” of the con-
troversial remarks of a BJP leader against
Prophet Mohammed. The controversial
remarks also sparked a Twitter trend in the
Arab world calling for a boycott of Indian
products. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu
is currently visiting Qatar and on Sunday he
met Qatar’s PM and Interior Minister Sheikh
Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani.
CONG LASHES OUT AT
BJP OVER REMARKS
Soon after BJP on Sunday suspended its
spokesperson Nupur Sharma from par-
ty’s primary membership and expelled its
Delhi media head Naveen

alleged controversial
remarks on religious
minorities, Congress
General Secretary Ran-

are not so good states.

status of women gradually
declined during the period of
Dharmashastras and Pura-

regarded as second class citi-

witness some changes for
good of women.
TheMedievalperiodproved
to be highly disappointing for
the Indian women and their
status further deteriorated
during this period. The Mus-

causes for such degradation.
However, during the 14th and

UKRAINE
WILL BUILD
BACK BETTER
fter 100 days of in-
tense fighting, it is
difficult to begin
thinking about re-
building Ukraine
when Russian bombs are still
raining down on innocent civil-
ians. But it is precisely during
times of crisis that we must con-
sider what comes next. Above
all, leading Western powers
need to play a central role in
supporting country’s recon-
struction.
To that end, the European
Commission recently proposed
establishing a “Rebuild
Ukraine” facility to channel
grants and loans. But Ukraine’s
large financial needs will re-
quire European Union to iden-
tify new funding sources, which
should include Russian central
bank’s frozen foreign-exchange
reserves, as well as funds previ-
ously confiscated from Russian
state enterprises. Reconstruc-
tion experts recommend looking
at the rebuilding task through
the lens of a natural disaster
such as an earthquake or a flood.
In the initial triage phase of re-
sponse, the government needs to
stop the bleeding – as Ukraine is
doing. That means fighting back
and ejecting the Russian invad-
ers from the entire country

thousands of peo-
ple worldwide every year. At
this very moment, an extreme
heatwave in India and Paki-
stan, affecting about one bil-

,”
warns Chandni Singh, a lead

maximum temperature for
northwest and central India
was the highest in 122 years.
This is not just a South
Asian problem. In recent
years, similarly extreme con-
ditions occurred in the US,
Australia, Europe, Scandina-

thousands of hospitaliza-

treme heat is also linked to
increases in premature
births, low birthweight ba-
bies, stillbirths; reductions
in worker productivity; high-
er rates of chronic kidney
disease of unknown origin;
and increases in suicide.
Extreme temperatures are
thus an “all of society” prob-
lem. Such conditions not
only harm human health;
they also have detrimental ef-
fects on infrastructure, crop
yields, poultry mortality,
threatening livelihoods. The
2021 heat dome in Pacific
Northwest western Canada
was a case in point.
It was an event that would
have been virtually impossi-
ble without climate change.
Temperature extremes were
about 5°C above previous re-
cords, causing 1,000 excess
deaths a 69-fold increase in
heat-related hospitalizations.

ocean habitats, threatening
food security and livelihoods

SURVIVING A FUTURE

Unprecedented extreme-heat episodes like the heatwave in India and
Pakistan this spring and the 2021 heat dome in the Pacific
Northwest are a preview of what awaits us on a warming planet.

“We will do what-

Kashmiri Pandits,
we will not leave
them in the lurch.

Sharma, the two most
vocal members of the
disgruntled Congress

Wasnik got the reward

is, for what reason did
Vivek Tankha get a
chance to go to Rajya
Sabha again?
According to sources
in the Congress, there
are two reasons for this.
The first reason is legal
compulsion. A good, re-
nowned and resource-
ful lawyer is needed for
the cases of Nehru-Gan-
dhi family. Kapil Sibal
had left the party. Ab-
hishek Manu Singhvi is
definitely with the Con-
gress but he has become
an MP in West Bengal
with the help of Trina-
mool Congress. There
are so many cases of
Mamta Banerjee’s fam-
ily and party that it will
be difficult for her to
give him time off. Chid-
ambaram is stuck in his
cases then KTS Tulsi is
not of much help in big
cases. So there was a
compulsion to keep
Tanka. Secondly, his
name was endorsed by
Kamal Nath and there-
after the Congress did
not want to take any
risk by rejecting him.

New Delhi: Congress
party has fielded Ajay
Maken as its candidate
from Haryana and it is
being said that former
Chief Minister Bhupin-
der Singh Hooda had
laid a condition that if
the party makes any-
one a candidate, in-
stead of Randeep Sur-
jewala and Kumari
Selja, he will ensure
their victory.
Earlier it seemed
that the party would
field a Brahmin from
Haryana and Pramod
Tiwari also went to
meet Hooda. Rajeev
Shukla was also trying
and Anand Sharma’s
name was also dis-
cussed.
Ghulam Nabi Azad
has been in charge of
Haryana, hence his
name was also being
discussed. But in the
end, the Congress de-
cided Maken’s name
and now it will be Hoo-
da’s responsibility to
ensure his victory.
Congress may have
sent Maken to Haryana
under whatever com-
pulsion, but party lead-
ers are claiming of two
advantages. First, his
is a Punjabi Khatris,
the community from
which Chief Minister
Manohar Lal Khattar
belongs.
There is a discussion
in Haryana that BJP
will not contest the
next election in the
name of Khattar. By
the time of next elec-
tion, it will be ten years
and before that BJP
will field a new leader
so that anti-incumben-
cy can be reduced. In
such a situation, Con-
gress will get the bene-
fit of Maken’s being
sent to Rajya Sabha
from the state.
Even if the BJP does
not remove Khattar, the
Congress will present a
Punjabi Khatri face.
Another advantage of
Maken is that Ashok
Tanwar, who was the
President of Congress
and now doing Aam
Aadmi Party politics, is
his brother-in-law.
So, Congress will
somehow try to neu-
tralize him with the
help of Maken.
Why was Ajay Maken sent to Haryana?
lll
Ghulam Nabi
Azad has been
in charge of
Haryana, hence
his name was
discussed. But
the Congress
decided Maken’s
name and now it
will be Hooda’s
responsibility to

Chief Minister’s Office.
Beforethemeetingbe-
gan, the CM called his
PrincipalSecretaryTan-
may Kumar and ordered
to relieve Garg immedi-
ately
. It was asked who
will present the affairs
of the Finance Depart-
ment in the Cabinet
meeting? The CM gave
the name of Prem Singh
without any thought.
Within five minutes, an
order to appoint Mehra
as Principal Secy, Fi-
nance was issued and he
was sitting as Principal
Secretary of Finance
Dept, not PHED.
The bureaucracy was
taken aback by this dra-
matic development. The
present Gehlot govern-
ment had a conflict with
CommissionerMehrain
initial years. Matters
such as the dates of pan-
chayat elections and the
suspension of transfer
of officers carried out
during the Code of Con-
duct were the cause of
conflict. But for the last
two years, the relations
have been cordial.
Before Mehra, Ram-
lubhaya, who became a
Commissioner during
the earlier tenure of the
Congress government,
also had a conflict with
the BJP government.
Now the million-dol-
lar question is, who will
take charge of this im-
portantandcovetedpost
in place of Prem Singh
Mehra? It is certain that
only an IAS will be ap-
pointed, retired, or serv-
ing. According to ex-
perts, there are limited
options available to the
government because
half a dozen retired IAS,
who have the qualifica-
tions,havealreadyoccu-
pied the higher posts.
Two names -- Pawan Ku-
mar Goyal and R Ven-
kateshwaran-- are doing
the rounds while Niran-
jan Arya and Veenu
Gupta may also be con-
sidered.

Jaipur: The leaders and
ministers close to CM
Ashok Gehlot were en-
gaged continuously for
the last two days to per-
suade 6 disgruntled
MLAs. After two days of
meetings, the six MLAs
met Gehlot late Satur-
day night. First RTDC
chairman Dharmendra
Rathore held a meeting
with the MLAs at Rajen-
dra Gudha’s residence
and there were also con-
tinuous rounds of meet-
ings at different places.
The six MLAs Rajen-

had formed G-6 group
and were showing rebel-
lious attitude for the
last few days. Before
leaving for Udaipur on
Sunday, MoS Rajendra
Gudha told media that
they brought all issues
to CM’s notice. “There
were very small issues
that the CM wasn’t even
aware of. Now the CM
will fix everything. It’s
not a matter of displeas-
ure. Wajib Ali’s griev-
ances will also be ad-
dressed,” he said. As
per the MLAs, the CM
has agreed to many of
their demands. CM lis-
tened to them for 1.5
hours. The issue of
Sandeep Yadav and Wa-
jib Ali not getting any
post in govt was dis-
cussed in detail. How-
ever, both of them re-
mained silent and other
MLAs raised their is-
sues. Gudha and Khila-
di Lal Bairwa spoke
openly about the issue
of self-respect.
The MLAs appeared
disturbed over behav-
iour of the bureaucracy
.
“We have met the CM
now going to Udaipur.
We don’t have personal
resentment with any-
one. It is related to sys-
tem. Other issues have
been discussed,” said
Wajib Ali. Congress
MLA GS Malinga made
serious allegations
against DGP ML Lather.
Malinga said that the

Mahesh Joshi said that even though Subhash

at the behest of BJP. “All his proposers are BJP MLAs.
In such a situation, horse trading is being resorted to for
fetching votes. We would have no objection even if BJP
had fielded him as its official candidate. At least four-five
independent MLAs would have become his proposers
and BJP could have supported him later,” he said.
