As application goes through, CBI approver Sachin Vaze sings like a canary
Renni Abraham
Mumbai: Criminal
mastermind and dis-
graced policeman
Sachin Vaze, is singing
like the proverbial ca-
nary after his applica-
tion to turn approver
was accepted by a spe-
cial CBI court. This
has come about in the
wake of Vaze provid-
ing specific details
about two Maharash-
tra Ministers, Anil
Deshmukh and Anil
Parab to the investiga-
tion agency.
Vaze told the CBI
that Parab was de facto
running the Maharash-
tra Home Department,
although former Home
Minister (now incar-
cerated in an ED case)
Deshmukh held charge
of the portfolio.
While Vaze will still
face conviction in the
Mansukh Hiren mur-
der case in the Antilla
‘terror’ case, his status
as an approver may
garner him a lighter
sentence for cooperat-
ing with the central
agency.
His accomplice in
the criminal case, and
former colleague
Pradeep Sharma, who
was charge-sheeted by
the National Investiga-
tive Agency (NIA) for
murdering Hiren fol-
lowing a phone call
from Vaze, however, is
unlikely to benefit
from a lesser sentence
as his efforts to turn
approver have so far
proved unsuccessful.
The case made inter-
national headlines on
February 25, 2021,
when a car containing
20 gelignite sticks was
found outside the resi-
dence of top industri-
alist Mukesh Ambani
in Mumbai. A note
found inside the vehi-
cle--addressed to Muke-
sh and his wife Nita
Ambani--said the act
was a prelude to more
serious violence
against their family.
The Indian Mujahi-
deen and Jaish-ul-Hind
linkages that emerged
in the case turned out
to be bogus and ficti-
tious creations of Vaze
and his cohorts, who
had intended to sus-
tain a widespread ex-
tortion racket within
the Indian corporate
sector by creating an
illusion of involve-
ment from interna-
tional terrorist agen-
cies.
The buzz is that sim-
ilar efforts had been
reported earlier in
Mumbai city, where
these notorious and so-
called encounter spe-
cialists were found to
be operating extortion
rackets, even using the
name of overseas
gangsters to get Indian
businessmen to cough
up huge sums of mon-
ey.
“The two years of
COVID-19 meant that
these high-energy en-
counter policemen
were mostly bored and
idle. As they say, an
idle mind is the devil’s
workshop. So it was no
surprise that they de-
vised the plan to extort
money from corporate
India thinking their
foolhardy enterprise
would actually remain
undetected,” a person
privy to the develop-
ments said.

to the ground. This was my
initiation into the humble
world of Samaj Sevaks, peo-

for society and the country
.
The process of debunking
myths about contesting elec-
tions had started for me.
I was told that I would be
fighting against a candidate
belonging to the royal family
and had ruled over the area
from 1952 to 1998. So it was
natural that winning the
election was going to be no
walk in the park for me, nei-
ther would my candidature
be accepted easily. Seniors
advised me to spread a word
among my family, friends
and relatives that I would be
fighting the elections and
seek their support. They
also advised me to meet
Atalji, Advaniji, Kushabhau
Thakre and Sushmaji.
The first karyakarta meet-
ing was to be held at Agarwal
Dharamshala
, Gurgaon. We
were fighting as a coalition
so a joint meeting with Indi-
an National Lokdal and BJP
karyakartas was organized.
The hall was chock-full of
workers of the two parties.
Modiji was present for the
meeting along with the most
renowned names of the BJP
.
What transpired that day
touched me to the core and I
grew emotionally attached
with Modiji for his brotherly
protection,guidanceandsup-
port. In his speech, Modiji
said, “One vote has made all
the difference and it is this- it
is the vote of Congress’s Rao
Indrajeet. Now Sudha Yadav
will fight for this seat. She is
a Veerangana and does not
have anything. We have to
help her fight and win.”
Modiji spread out a sheet on
the floor and placed a steel
Kalash in the centre. He then
charged the hall with these
words “I am a pracharak and
the Sangh takes care of me
and my expenses. Several
years ago when I visited my
mother, she blessed me with
Rs 11 and told me that this
money will come in handy
someday
. I feel it was for this
day that my mother gave me
that money
. I offer Rs 11 for
mysisterSudhaYadav’sfight
in this election and I request
all the karyakartas to sacri-
fice in this yajna everything
they have on them right now,
except for the fare to go back
home.” I was mesmerized, in
a state of transcendence
, as
this entire experience was so
new to me. Within half an
hour, at Modiji’s behest, an
amount of Rs 7.5 lakh had
been collected as funds for
my election campaign.
This is how my political
journey began. After this
Modiji organised a sabha in
my Lok Sabha constituency
.
It was a magnificent sabha
in Rewari and Atalji was to
attend it as well. Modiji rode
on a scooter the entire day to
gauge the pulse of the peo-
ple and the response to our
campaign. My car was stuck
in jam as people were gush-
ing in for the sabha and the
hovering of Atalji’s helicop-
ter could be heard signaling
his arrival. Modiji got me a
lift on a scooter too that took
me through the narrow
lanes so that I could make it
to the sabha in time. After
the event was over, Atalji
had a brief interaction with
me before leaving. He con-
gratulated me for inching
closer to a win. At last, when
I met Modiji at the party of-
fice later in the day, he said
“Look, you are winning this
election. Keep your calm
and continue to campaign
for a couple of days more.
You will make it.” And in-
deed, I won that election!
TO BE CONTINUED…
udha Yadav is a Kargil war
widow and has been a Lok
Sabha MP from Haryana.
Modi’s decision to field Kar-
gil war widows as candidates
gave this teacher a chance to
contest elections. Modi was
PrabhariatHaryanaofficeat
that time. The story is about
the immense support and
guidance that she received
from Modiji for the big con-
test. The incident as it hap-
pened: Modiji had once re-
ceived Rs 11 from his mother
in blessing, which he in turn,
a few years down the line,
handed over to Sudha Yadav
as a blessing to initiate her
election campaign and asked
the karyakartas to contrib-
ute whatever they had on
them at that moment to fund
her campaign. Within half
an hour, there were Rs 7.5
lakh on the blanket donated
as a campaign fund for Sud-
ha and of course, Sudha Ya-
dav won that election.
There were 18 Kargil war
widows in the area I resided
in and it was Modiji’s vision
to field someone from the
family of martyrs for that
election. I was a teacher by
profession and was clueless
about the ways of politics.
All of a sudden I started re-
ceiving calls from BJP mem-
bers encouraging me to con-
test elections but I continued
to refuse as neither my fam-
ily nor I ever imagined my-
self cut out for such a role.
Also, I had no political back-
ground. It was then that
Chaudhary Ishwar Singhji,
who was then the State Pres-
ident of Kisan Morcha, said
to me “I will give you a num-
ber. Speak to the person. You
will find your way
.” It hap-
pened to be Narendrabha

was so politically naive, I did
not even know what it meant
to be Rashtriye Sanghathan

Nevertheless,
I called up

call himself and I introduced
myself. I said that the mem-
bers of the BJP are persuad-
ing me to contest the upcom-

befuddled I have been given

firmed to him my intention
to contest the elections. But
again I shared my misgiv-

SONIA GANDHI RAHUL GANDHI GET ED NOTICES IN NATIONAL HERALD CASE
CONGRESS CRIES
‘VENDETTAPOLITICS’

New Delhi: The En-
forcement Directorate
on Wednesday sum-
moned Congress presi-
dent Sonia Gandhi and
her MP son Rahul Gan-
dhi for questioning in a
money laundering case
linked to the National
Herald newspaper, offi-
cials said.
The case was regis-
tered recently to probe
alleged financial irregu-
larities in the party-pro-
motedYoungIndianthat
owns the National Her-
ald newspaper. State-
mentsof otherCongress
leaders, who were then
office bearers of the Na-
tional Herald and Asso-
ciated Journals Limited
(AJL), have also been
recorded by the ED.
The case only in-
volved the conversion
of debt into equity to
pay off dues like sala-
ries, the Congress said,
accusing the govern-
ment of trying to deflect
attention from “real is-
sues” like inflation.
By targeting National Herald every
now and then, BJP has disgraced
and disrespected freedom fighters
as their [BJP’s]
predecessors
didn’t play a role in India’s
Freedom Movement. National
Herald newspaper was started
in 1942. At that time British
tried to suppress it. Today,
Modi govt is using the ED
to do the same. A money
laundering case has been registered when there is
no money laundering. Move reeks of a vendetta,
pettiness, fear, and political cheapness.

Fadnavis asks MVA govt
to decrease duties on fuel
First India Bureau
Mumbai: After the
Centre cleared the
Goods Services
Tax (GST) dues to
states, with Maha-
rashtra getting the
largest share,
Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) leader
Devendra Fadnavis
on Wednesday said
the state government
should now slash the
excise duties on fuel
and provide relief to
the common man.
Fuel prices are not
covered under GST
and every state has the
right to decide excise
duty rates. Maharash-
tra is said to have the
highest rate in the
country
.
After the Central
government cleared
the GST dues on May
31, Fadnavis shared
the Union govern-
ment’s release and
highlighted the fact
that the state had re-
ceived Rs14,145 crore.
“The state takes
pride in blaming the
Centre for every-
thing. The state
should immediately
bring down prices by
reducing excise
duty,” he tweeted.

“The Union government has paid
Rs14,145 crore to Maharashtra, clear-
ing its dues till May 31 this year. The
government has cleared its dues to all the
states. Will Maharashtra government now slash
the fuel prices or prefer to blame the Centre for
making more payment of the GST? Whenever
the state had a chance to exercise its administra-
tive skills for good, it has always postponed.”

The BJP, with its strength in the state Assembly, can
win two Rajya Sabha seats on its own. The Congress,
NCP and Shiv Sena can win one seat each. However,
the Sena has fielded two candidates -Sanjay Raut and
Sanjay Pawar - and is banking on surplus votes of the
Congress and NCP for the victory. The BJP has fielded
Union Minister Piyush Goyal, and senior leaders Anil
Bonde and Dhananjay Mahadik.

to the ground. This was my
initiation into the humble
world of Samaj Sevaks, peo-
plewhoworkwholeheartedly
for society and the country
.
The process of debunking
myths about contesting elec-
tions had started for me.
I was told that I would be
fighting against a candidate
belonging to the royal family
and had ruled over the area
from 1952 to 1998. So it was
natural that winning the
election was going to be no
walk in the park for me, nei-
ther would my candidature
be accepted easily. Seniors
advised me to spread a word
among my family, friends
and relatives that I would be
fighting the elections and
seek their support. They
also advised me to meet
Atalji, Advaniji, Kushabhau
Thakre and Sushmaji.
The first karyakarta meet-
ing was to be held at Agarwal
Dharamshala, Gurgaon. We
were fighting as a coalition
so a joint meeting with Indi-
an National Lokdal and BJP
karyakartas was organized.
The hall was chock-full of
workers of the two parties.
Modiji was present for the
meeting along with the most
renowned names of the BJP
.
What transpired that day
touched me to the core and I
grew emotionally attached
with Modiji for his brotherly
protection,guidanceandsup-
port. In his speech, Modiji
said, “One vote has made all
the difference and it is this- it
is the vote of Congress’s Rao
Indrajeet. Now Sudha Yadav
will fight for this seat. She is
a Veerangana and does not
have anything. We have to
help her fight and win.”
Modiji spread out a sheet on
the floor and placed a steel
Kalash in the centre. He then
charged the hall with these
words “I am a pracharak and
the Sangh takes care of me
and my expenses. Several
years ago when I visited my
mother, she blessed me with
Rs 11 and told me that this
money will come in handy
someday
. I feel it was for this
day that my mother gave me
that money
. I offer Rs 11 for
mysisterSudhaYadav’sfight
in this election and I request
all the karyakartas to sacri-
fice in this yajna everything
they have on them right now,
except for the fare to go back
home.” I was mesmerized, in
a state of transcendence, as
this entire experience was so
new to me. Within half an
hour, at Modiji’s behest, an
amount of Rs 7.5 lakh had
been collected as funds for
my election campaign.
This is how my political
journey began. After this
Modiji organised a sabha in
my Lok Sabha constituency
.
It was a magnificent sabha
in Rewari and Atalji was to
attend it as well. Modiji rode
on a scooter the entire day to
gauge the pulse of the peo-
ple and the response to our
campaign. My car was stuck
in jam as people were gush-
ing in for the sabha and the
hovering of Atalji’s helicop-
ter could be heard signaling
his arrival. Modiji got me a
lift on a scooter too that took
me through the narrow
lanes so that I could make it
to the sabha in time. After
the event was over, Atalji
had a brief interaction with
me before leaving. He con-
gratulated me for inching
closer to a win. At last, when
I met Modiji at the party of-
fice later in the day, he said
“Look, you are winning this
election. Keep your calm
and continue to campaign
for a couple of days more.
You will make it.” And in-
deed, I won that election!
TO BE CONTINUED…
udha Yadav is a Kargil war
widow and has been a Lok
Sabha MP from Haryana.
Modi’s decision to field Kar-
gil war widows as candidates
gave this teacher a chance to
contest elections. Modi was
PrabhariatHaryanaofficeat
that time. The story is about
the immense support and
guidance that she received
from Modiji for the big con-
test. The incident as it hap-
pened: Modiji had once re-
ceived Rs 11 from his mother
in blessing, which he in turn,
a few years down the line,
handed over to Sudha Yadav
as a blessing to initiate her
election campaign and asked
the karyakartas to contrib-
ute whatever they had on
them at that moment to fund
her campaign. Within half
an hour, there were Rs 7.5
lakh on the blanket donated
as a campaign fund for Sud-
ha and of course, Sudha Ya-
dav won that election.
There were 18 Kargil war
widows in the area I resided
in and it was Modiji’s vision
to field someone from the
family of martyrs for that
election. I was a teacher by
profession and was clueless
about the ways of politics.
All of a sudden I started re-
ceiving calls from BJP mem-
bers encouraging me to con-
test elections but I continued
to refuse as neither my fam-
ily nor I ever imagined my-
self cut out for such a role.
Also, I had no political back-
ground. It was then that
Chaudhary Ishwar Singhji,
who was then the State Pres-
ident of Kisan Morcha, said
to me “I will give you a num-
ber. Speak to the person. You
will find your way
.” It hap-
pened to be Narendrabhai’s
number. Let me reiterate, I
was so politically naive, I did
not even know what it meant
to be Rashtriye Sanghathan
Mahamantri of BJP
.
Nevertheless, I called up
the landline number. Naren-

at that time. He answered the
call himself and I introduced
myself. I said that the mem-
bers of the BJP are persuad-

.
Addressing a press
conference along with
RJD leader Tejashwi
Yadav, Nitish Kumar
said that the “caste-

in a set time frame.
The Bihar chief minis-
ter made announce-
ment after an all-party
meet held on Wednes-

“In the meeting all
nine parties unani-

and it will be available
in the public domain,”
Nitish said.
RJD leader Tejashwi
Yadav asserted that the
“caste-based survey”
was in the interest of
the people of the state
and urged the Central
government to provide
the necessary finan-
cial support.
“It’s a caste-based
survey, not a census.
It’s our win. Today we
suggested (in the all-
party meeting) that so-
cial anthropologists
should be included in
this,” Tejashwi said.
“We’ve said to bring
the (bill) in the next
cabinet meeting and
start it in the month of
November. During
Chhath puja people who
reside outside Bihar
will also come to the
state and till then we
can complete prepara-
tion for it,” he added.

New Delhi: When for-
mer Karnataka Chief
Minister BS Yedi-
yurappa was removed
from the post of Chief
Minister, there was
talk that his son BY Vi-
jayendra would be
made a minister in the
state government, but
that did not happen.
Then there was a dis-
cussion that he would
be given ticket in the
Legislative Council
elections to be held on
seven seats, but he
didn’t even get the tick-
et. Now Yediyurappa
has said that a big re-
sponsibility will be
given to his son. There-
fore the question is,
will his son get the big
responsibility as his
father has claimed?
Keep in mind that the
assembly elections are
going to be held in the
state next year and it is
believed that Vijayen-
dra can get a ticket
then. But contesting
the assembly elections
is not a big responsibil-
ity. So the question
natural arises: Is Yedi-
yurappa seeing his son
become the chief min-
ister?
On the other hand,
knowledgeable BJP
leaders say that Basa-
varaj Bommai has
been made the Chief
Minister of the state as
Yeddiurappa’s choice.
So now there is no need
to listen to him.
Either he can keep a
chief minister of his
choice or get his son
made a minister. It is
said that Yeddyurappa
is sacrificing his son
only to keep ‘alive’ CM
‘nominated’ bi him.
But it won’t last long.
Yeddiurappa will real-
ly take some big re-
sponsibility in the
party for his son be-
fore the next assembly
elections. If his son is
not made a minister,
then he would like to
interfere more in the
distribution of assem-
bly tickets so that
more and more people
can get tickets. Yedi-
yurappa is laying his
cards by sensing the
situation of a hung as-
sembly and therefore,
the assembly elections
next year are going to
be interesting.
Does BS Yediyurappa see a CM in his son?

the company in May 2021 were significantly affected
due to COVID-19 related disruptions,” the automaker
stated. Sales of mini cars, comprising Alto and S-Pres-
so, stood at 17,408 units last month. It stood at 4,760

GOVT COLLECTS ` 1.41 LAKH CR GST IN MAY
New Delhi (PTI): GST
revenues bucked the
two-month rising trend
in May and stood at
nearly `1.41 lakh crore,
registering a year-on-
year increase of 44%.
Although the May
Goods and Services
Tax (GST) revenues
came in lower than the
record high collection
in April at `1.68 lakh
crore and `1.42 lakh
crore in March, it is
still the fourth highest
collection since the
rollout of the new indi-
rect tax regime on July
1, 2017.
In February, reve-
nues from taxing sale
of goods and services
was at `1.33 lakh crore,
while in January it was
`1,40,986 crore.
“The gross GST rev-
enue collected in the
month of May 2022 is
`1,40,885 crore of which
CGST is `25,036 crore,
SGST is `32,001 crore,
IGST is `73,345 crore
(including `37,469 crore
collected on import of
goods) and cess is
`10,502 crore (including
`931 crore collected on
import of goods),” the
Finance Ministry said
in a statement.
The revenues for the
month of May 2022 are
44% higher than the
GST revenues in the
same month last year at
`97,821 crore.
This is the fourth
time that the monthly
GST collection has
crossed the `1.40 lakh
crore mark since the
inception of GST and
the third straight
month since March
2022.
“The collection in
May, which pertains to
the returns for April --
the first month of the
financial year -- has al-
ways been less than
that in April, which
pertains to the returns
for March, the closing
of the financial year.
“However, it is en-
couraging to see that
even in the month of
May 2022, the gross
GST revenues have
crossed the `1.40 lakh
crore mark,” the Minis-
try said.
The total number of
e-way bills generated in
the month of April 2022
was 7.4 crore, which is
4% less than 7.7 crore
e-way bills generated in
the month of March
2022.
Deloitte India Part-
ner M S Mani said the
stability demonstrated
by GST collections ex-
ceeding `1.4 lakh crore
over the past three
months is a good indi-
cator of the growth of
the economy and ties in
with the other macroe-
conomic indicators in-
cluding the GDP num-
bers. “Significant ef-
forts in audits and ana-
lytics have also led to a
drive against tax evad-
ers, inculcating a tax
compliance culture,”
Mani said.
ICRA Chief Econo-
mist Aditi Nayar said
the high year-on-year
growth reflects the low
base of the second
wave.
“Nonetheless, the
May 2022 GST collec-
tions are robust com-
pared to the Q4 FY2022
trends, benefitting
from improved compli-
ance, market share
gains by the organised
sector as well as the
transmission of higher
commodity prices into
output prices,” Nayar
said.
Given the trends for
April-May 2022, and the
anticipation of a sus-
tained healthy momen-
tum of activity in ab-
sence of another wave
of COVID and major
disruptions, we expect
the CGST inflows in FY
2023 to exceed the
Budget Estimates level
by `1.15 trillion, help-
ing to absorb a part of
the higher subsidy bill.
IT IS THE FOURTH HIGHEST COLLECTION SINCE THE ROLLOUT OF THE NEW INDIRECT TAX REGIME ON JULY 1, 2017

HC GRANTS PREGNANT WOMAN
BAIL IN HUBBY’S SUICIDE CASE
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Bom-
bay High Court has
granted pre-arrest
bail to a pregnant
woman accused of
abetting her hus-
band’s suicide, saying
it was the duty of the
court to ensure the
woman and the baby
are protected.
A vacation bench of
Justice Milind Jadhav
in its May 30 order, a
copy of which was
made available on
Wednesday, noted that
the offence registered
against the woman is
serious. “But, since the
applicant is a pregnant
woman, it is the duty of
the court to ensure that
she and the baby are
protected,” said the
HC.
The woman,
Ashwini Son-
wane, is cur-
rently six
months preg-
nant with the
d e c e a s e d ’ s
child. She ap-
proached the high
court, apprehending
arrest in the FIR regis-
tered against her at the
Yawat police station in
Pune under Indian Pe-
n a l C o d e
Section 306 (abetment
of suicide) in April this
year, following a com-
plaint lodged by her
father-in-law.
The complaint
was lodged after
Sonwane’s hus-
band Rahul al-
legedly commit-
ted suicide in
April. The de-
ceased’s father
claimed Sonawane
had betrayed his son,
and that a month be-
fore the incident, she
had quarrelled with
his son and left for her
parents’ housse.
However, Sonwane in
her plea refuted the al-
legations, and claimed
her father-in-law had
been demanding dowry
from her due to which
her husband was under
stress. The woman fur-
ther said her relation-
ship with her husband
was cordial and that at
the time of the alleged
incident, she was three
months pregnant.
The court in its order
noted that the offence
registered was serious
andattractsamaximum
punishment of 10 years,
if found guilty
.
At this stage, the ap-
plicant may have to
visit the hospital regu-
larly and may also re-
quire care and rest after
delivery, said the HC.
The court, while rant-
ing anticipatory bail to
the woman on a person-
al bond of Rs25,000, also
directed her to appear
before the police station
concernedforrecording
her statement.
Looking at the fact that
the applicant is 25 weeks
pregnant and carrying a foetus, it
is equally the duty of the court to
ensure that the applicant and the foetus
are protected at this stage and the
applicant is not kept under any
duress or stress.

Unsold sugarcane leaves a bitter taste for farmers

from Ahmednagar’s
Puntamba village,
which was the epicen-
tre of a massive pro-
test by cultivators in
2017, have begun an-
other agitation over
issues related to sug-
arcane and other
crops.
The agitation, which
started near the gram

joined the protest, he
added.
Lastmonth,ameeting
was held at the Puntam-
ba gram panchayat
where farmers decided
to put forth 16 demands
before the government.
Referring to some of
their demands, Dhan-
wate said the sugarcane
cultivation was on the
higher side in the state
dueto(lastyear’s)excess
rains, but now sugar fac-
tories are not picking up
the crop. Farmers are
burning their crops or
committing suicide.
To this end, the farm-
ers have demanded that
the state provide finan-
cial aid of Rs2 lakh per
hectare to the farmers
whose ugarcane is still
in the fields, he said.
In addition, onion
growers should get aid
of Rs500 per quintal to
offset the recent fall in
the rates of the kitchen
staple, he said, and that
farmers have also de-
manded that their elec-
tricity bills be waived.
“We held a rally in the
village in the morning
and then started the agi-
tation. We will continue
to protest until June 05.
We expect the govern-

that does not happen, we

in love with each other. Tejasswi
Prakash had recently shared a hilarious
picture of them as she is seen piggy-
backing on Karan. In the cute post
shared by Tejasswi Prakash, she is seen
holding on to Karan Kundrra and can
be seen very happy. Naagin 6 actress

T
he demise of Sidhu Moose Wala
has been unfortunate for many.
Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi was
named among the prime accused
in the death case. Salman Khan was also
on Bishnoi’s hitlist before Sid-
hu Moose Wala and had plans
to murder the Bollywood su-
perstar. The Mumbai police
have now amped up the secu-
rity of the celebrity citing the
threat level. The police said
that they increased the se-
curity to keep the actor
safe as they are keeping
an eye on the activities
of Bishnoi’s gang in Ra-
jasthan. —Agency
A
nanya Panday is one
of the most popular
actors among the
current generation
of Bollywood celebs. To eve-
ryone’s surprise, Holly-
wood actor Will Smith
made a special appearance
in one of the songs in the
movie. Earlier, in a chat with
iDiva, the actress opened up
about working with Smith
and called him the “most-
chillest person”. The 23-year-
old actress said that she and
Tara did not know about
Will’s coming to SOTY 2’s sets
for the longest time. “ A day
before, while we were shoot-
ing a song, Punit casually
tells us and we were shocked.
When Will arrived, he seemed
like the most chilled-out per-
son. He was nice to everyone
in the room. I just stared at
him like a stalker” said Anan-

  • 1. As application goes through, CBI approver Sachin Vaze sings like a canary Renni Abraham Mumbai: Criminal mastermind and dis- graced policeman Sachin Vaze, is singing like the proverbial ca- nary after his applica- tion to turn approver was accepted by a spe- cial CBI court. This has come about in the wake of Vaze provid- ing specific details about two Maharash- tra Ministers, Anil Deshmukh and Anil Parab to the investiga- tion agency. Vaze told the CBI that Parab was de facto running the Maharash- tra Home Department, although former Home Minister (now incar- cerated in an ED case) Deshmukh held charge of the portfolio. While Vaze will still face conviction in the Mansukh Hiren mur- der case in the Antilla ‘terror’ case, his status as an approver may garner him a lighter sentence for cooperat- ing with the central agency. His accomplice in the criminal case, and former colleague Pradeep Sharma, who was charge-sheeted by the National Investiga- tive Agency (NIA) for murdering Hiren fol- lowing a phone call from Vaze, however, is unlikely to benefit from a lesser sentence as his efforts to turn approver have so far proved unsuccessful. The case made inter- national headlines on February 25, 2021, when a car containing 20 gelignite sticks was found outside the resi- dence of top industri- alist Mukesh Ambani in Mumbai. A note found inside the vehi- cle--addressed to Muke- sh and his wife Nita Ambani--said the act was a prelude to more serious violence against their family. The Indian Mujahi- deen and Jaish-ul-Hind linkages that emerged in the case turned out to be bogus and ficti- tious creations of Vaze and his cohorts, who had intended to sus- tain a widespread ex- tortion racket within the Indian corporate sector by creating an illusion of involve- ment from interna- tional terrorist agen- cies. The buzz is that sim- ilar efforts had been reported earlier in Mumbai city, where these notorious and so- called encounter spe- cialists were found to be operating extortion rackets, even using the name of overseas gangsters to get Indian businessmen to cough up huge sums of mon- ey. “The two years of COVID-19 meant that these high-energy en- counter policemen were mostly bored and idle. As they say, an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. So it was no surprise that they de- vised the plan to extort money from corporate India thinking their foolhardy enterprise would actually remain undetected,” a person privy to the develop- ments said. Sachin Vaze —FILE PHOTO Modi-Shah’s political game changer: Digital caste census Renni Abraham Mumbai: TheNarendra Modi government 2.0 is set to launch a national caste census to be con- ducted digitally across the nation, a move that will likely solve the co- nundrum of political reservations for other backwardclasses(OBC), which has been hanging fire in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar. AsaseniorBJPleader told First India, “The is- sue is of political repre- sentation (on the basis of population demo- graphics),whichisbeing denied to more than 400 segments within the OBC communities. In Maharashtra, for in- stance, they will contest as general category can- didates in the upcoming elections to civic corpo- rations and councils. The earlier-constituted 27% OBC reservation was set aside by the Su- preme Court, which or- dered that these seats be declared as open catego- ry seats.” Representations were received from across the country by Prime Minis- ter Modi, a staunch be- liever in meritocracy over reservations him- self.Hisgovernmentwill launch a digital caste census once the Rajya Sabha and Presidential elections are through. “The move is also aimed at putting paid to political turbulence be- ing created in Bihar by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, whosnuggledup to Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) Turn to P6 UNDER WRAPS? Political reservations for OBC communities are hanging fire in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh where civic body polls are imminent Disgraced cop will provide information on Shiv Sena Minister Anil Parab, former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh to the ground. This was my initiation into the humble world of Samaj Sevaks, peo- plewhoworkwholeheartedl y for society and the country . The process of debunking myths about contesting elec- tions had started for me. I was told that I would be fighting against a candidate belonging to the royal family and had ruled over the area from 1952 to 1998. So it was natural that winning the election was going to be no walk in the park for me, nei- ther would my candidature be accepted easily. Seniors advised me to spread a word among my family, friends and relatives that I would be fighting the elections and seek their support. They also advised me to meet Atalji, Advaniji, Kushabhau Thakre and Sushmaji. The first karyakarta meet- ing was to be held at Agarwal Dharamshala , Gurgaon. We were fighting as a coalition so a joint meeting with Indi- an National Lokdal and BJP karyakartas was organized. The hall was chock-full of workers of the two parties. Modiji was present for the meeting along with the most renowned names of the BJP . What transpired that day touched me to the core and I grew emotionally attached with Modiji for his brotherly protection,guidanceandsup- port. In his speech, Modiji said, “One vote has made all the difference and it is this- it is the vote of Congress’s Rao Indrajeet. Now Sudha Yadav will fight for this seat. She is a Veerangana and does not have anything. We have to help her fight and win.” Modiji spread out a sheet on the floor and placed a steel Kalash in the centre. He then charged the hall with these words “I am a pracharak and the Sangh takes care of me and my expenses. Several years ago when I visited my mother, she blessed me with Rs 11 and told me that this money will come in handy someday . I feel it was for this day that my mother gave me that money . I offer Rs 11 for mysisterSudhaYadav’sfight in this election and I request all the karyakartas to sacri- fice in this yajna everything they have on them right now, except for the fare to go back home.” I was mesmerized, in a state of transcendence , as this entire experience was so new to me. Within half an hour, at Modiji’s behest, an amount of Rs 7.5 lakh had been collected as funds for my election campaign. This is how my political journey began. After this Modiji organised a sabha in my Lok Sabha constituency . It was a magnificent sabha in Rewari and Atalji was to attend it as well. Modiji rode on a scooter the entire day to gauge the pulse of the peo- ple and the response to our campaign. My car was stuck in jam as people were gush- ing in for the sabha and the hovering of Atalji’s helicop- ter could be heard signaling his arrival. Modiji got me a lift on a scooter too that took me through the narrow lanes so that I could make it to the sabha in time. After the event was over, Atalji had a brief interaction with me before leaving. He con- gratulated me for inching closer to a win. At last, when I met Modiji at the party of- fice later in the day, he said “Look, you are winning this election. Keep your calm and continue to campaign for a couple of days more. You will make it.” And in- deed, I won that election! TO BE CONTINUED… udha Yadav is a Kargil war widow and has been a Lok Sabha MP from Haryana. Modi’s decision to field Kar- gil war widows as candidates gave this teacher a chance to contest elections. Modi was PrabhariatHaryanaofficeat that time. The story is about the immense support and guidance that she received from Modiji for the big con- test. The incident as it hap- pened: Modiji had once re- ceived Rs 11 from his mother in blessing, which he in turn, a few years down the line, handed over to Sudha Yadav as a blessing to initiate her election campaign and asked the karyakartas to contrib- ute whatever they had on them at that moment to fund her campaign. Within half an hour, there were Rs 7.5 lakh on the blanket donated as a campaign fund for Sud- ha and of course, Sudha Ya- dav won that election. There were 18 Kargil war widows in the area I resided in and it was Modiji’s vision to field someone from the family of martyrs for that election. I was a teacher by profession and was clueless about the ways of politics. All of a sudden I started re- ceiving calls from BJP mem- bers encouraging me to con- test elections but I continued to refuse as neither my fam- ily nor I ever imagined my- self cut out for such a role. Also, I had no political back- ground. It was then that Chaudhary Ishwar Singhji, who was then the State Pres- ident of Kisan Morcha, said to me “I will give you a num- ber. Speak to the person. You will find your way .” It hap- pened to be Narendrabha i’s number. Let me reiterate, I was so politically naive, I did not even know what it meant to be Rashtriye Sanghathan Mahamantri of BJP . Nevertheless, I called up the landline number. Naren- dra bhai used to reside at Harishchandr aMathurLane at that time. He answered the call himself and I introduced myself. I said that the mem- bers of the BJP are persuad- ing me to contest the upcom- ing elections and since I am befuddled I have been given your number. What he said to me completely changed my perspective.Hesaid“Sudhaji a great change has come in yourlifewiththemartyrdom of your husband. Now you must come out to serve soci- ety . Just say yes and the party will help you fight the elec- tions.” Although I wasn’t completelyconvincedwheth- er really politics was my cup of tea, I called up Narendra bhai the next day and con- firmed to him my intention to contest the elections. But again I shared my misgiv- ingswithhimandsaid,“Nar- endra bhai, a few party work- ers have told me that a lot of money is required to run an election campaign whereas I belong to the service class. What I have received as exgratia payment, I wish to save for my children. My daughter is 7 while my son is only three and a half. So this money I cannot spend.” Nar- endra bhai replied “Sudhaji just say yes. Sangathan will help you fight the elections. These are all myths about elections that you must not harbour.HavefaithinNaren- dra bhai and say yes to serv- ing the society .” Thiswasthefirsttelephon- ic conversation I had with Narendra bhai and I was yet to meet him in person. My first meeting with some of the senior leaders of the Sangh Parivar happened a coupleof dayslateratHarish- chandra Mathur Lane which wastheresidenceof anMP .It had two rooms at the back and an open area in the front. The Bharatiya Jana- ta Party leader attended a bullock-cart race in Pune district’s Pimpri Chinchwad on Tuesday . Notably, the Supreme Court in December last year allowed the re- sumption of bullock- cart races in Maharash- tra, which were prohib- ited in the state in 2017. Deputy Chief Minis- ter Ajit Pawar had then called it a “victory of farmers” and said the move would help pro- tect livestock. Cong’s Patole confident that all 4 MVA nominees will win RS polls First India Bureau Shirdi: All four candi- dates of the Maha Vi- kas Aghadi (MVA) will win the upcom- ing Rajya Sabha elec- tions from Maharash- tra, state Congress chief Nana Patole said on Wednesday. The Congress is a con- stituentof thestate’srul- ing MVA, which also comprises the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Con- gress Party (NCP). Talk- ing to reporters in Shirdi, Patole parried questions on discontent within Congress over the candidature of Im- ran Pratapgarhi, party’s minority cell head who hailsfromUttarPradesh. “I said on the day of filing the nomination of (Pratapgarhi) that all four candidates will be victorious. We have the arithmetic with us,” he said. The Congress on Wednesday began the ‘NavSankalpWorkshop’ at Shirdi, on the lines of the party’s ‘Chintan Shi- vir’ held in Rajasthan’s Udaipur city last month. There has been a dis- content over the Con- gress decision to field Pratapgarhi, who is not from the state. Maha- rashtra Congress Gen- eral Secretary Ashish Deshmukh had resigned to protest over Pratap- garhi’scandidature.For- mer CM and senior Con- gress leader Prithviraj Chavan had suggested thatMukulWasnik, who is contesting from Ra- jasthan, be fielded from Maharashtra as he hails from the state. Some leaders had tak- en to Twitter to express their displeasure over the party’s decision. However, Patole attrib- uted the party’s decision to democracy . He also said, “Around 40-50 of- fice-bearers have ten- dered resignation from various Congress posts, in line with the party’s decision of ‘one person one post’ taken during the Chintan Shivir in Udaipur.” The six Rajya Sabha seats from Maharashtra will go to polls on June 10. Fadnavis asks MVA govt to decrease duties on fuel First India Bureau Mumbai: After the Centre cleared the Goods Services Tax (GST) dues to states, with Maha- rashtra getting the largest share, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said the state government should now slash the excise duties on fuel and provide relief to the common man. Fuel prices are not covered under GST and every state has the right to decide excise duty rates. Maharash- tra is said to have the highest rate in the country . After the Central government cleared the GST dues on May 31, Fadnavis shared the Union govern- ment’s release and highlighted the fact that the state had re- ceived Rs14,145 crore. “The state takes pride in blaming the Centre for every- thing. Several leaders in the civic body across party lines found their wards reserved including Con- gress leader Ravi Raja, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)leadersPrabhakar Shinde, Vinod Mishra, Makarand Narrvekar, and also Samajwadi Par- ty’s Rais Shaikh. Ravi Raja’s ward no 182 in Sion, which has never been reserved in the past, has been added to the reservation list. It has now been reserved for women, forcing the veteran civic leader to search for another ward to contest polls. Former Congress MP Milind Deora also came out in support of the proposal that the party move court and fight reservation.Statingthat Mumbai is the birth- place of the Congress, Deora tweeted, “Just be- cause we joined an alli- ance to “keep BJP out”, @INCIndia must not play 3rd fiddle risk be- coming irrelevant in Mumbai, it’s birthplace. This was my initiation into the humble world of Samaj Sevaks, peo- plewhoworkwholeheartedly for society and the country . The first karyakarta meet- ing was to be held at Agarwal Dharamshala, Gurgaon. I offer Rs 11 for mysisterSudhaYadav’sfight in this election and I request all the karyakartas to sacri- fice in this yajna everything they have on them right now, except for the fare to go back home.” I was mesmerized, in a state of transcendence, as this entire experience was so new to me. You will find your way .” It hap- pened to be Narendrabhai’s number. Let me reiterate, I was so politically naive, I did not even know what it meant to be Rashtriye Sanghathan Mahamantri of BJP . Nevertheless, I called up the landline number. Naren- dra bhai used to reside at HarishchandraMathurLane at that time. Then there was a dis- cussion that he would be given ticket in the Legislative Council elections to be held on seven seats, but he didn’t even get the tick- et. Now Yediyurappa has said that a big re- sponsibility will be given to his son. There- fore the question is, will his son get the big responsibility as his father has claimed? Keep in mind that the assembly elections are going to be held in the state next year and it is believed that Vijayen- dra can get a ticket then. But contesting the assembly elections is not a big responsibil- ity. So the question natural arises: Is Yedi- yurappa seeing his son become the chief min- ister? On the other hand, knowledgeable BJP leaders say that Basa- varaj Bommai has been made the Chief Minister of the state as Yeddiurappa’s choice. So now there is no need to listen to him. Either he can keep a chief minister of his choice or get his son made a minister. It is said that Yeddyurappa is sacrificing his son only to keep ‘alive’ CM ‘nominated’ bi him. But it won’t last long. Yeddiurappa will real- ly take some big re- sponsibility in the party for his son be- fore the next assembly elections. If his son is not made a minister, then he would like to interfere more in the distribution of assem- bly tickets so that more and more people can get tickets. Yedi- yurappa is laying his cards by sensing the situation of a hung as- sembly and therefore, the assembly elections next year are going to be interesting. Does BS Yediyurappa see a CM in his son? GOVT COLLECTS ` 1.41 LAKH CR GST IN MAY New Delhi (PTI): GST revenues bucked the two-month rising trend in May and stood at nearly `1.41 lakh crore, registering a year-on- year increase of 44%. Although the May Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenues came in lower than the record high collection in April at `1.68 lakh crore and `1.42 lakh crore in March, it is still the fourth highest collection since the rollout of the new indi- rect tax regime on July 1, 2017. In February, reve- nues from taxing sale of goods and services was at `1.33 lakh crore, while in January it was `1,40,986 crore. “The gross GST rev- enue collected in the month of May 2022 is `1,40,885 crore of which CGST is `25,036 crore, SGST is `32,001 crore, IGST is `73,345 crore (including `37,469 crore collected on import of goods) and cess is `10,502 crore (including `931 crore collected on import of goods),” the Finance Ministry said in a statement. The revenues for the month of May 2022 are 44% higher than the GST revenues in the same month last year at `97,821 crore. This is the fourth time that the monthly GST collection has crossed the `1.40 lakh crore mark since the inception of GST and the third straight month since March 2022. “The collection in May, which pertains to the returns for April -- the first month of the financial year -- has al- ways been less than that in April, which pertains to the returns for March, the closing of the financial year. “However, it is en- couraging to see that even in the month of May 2022, the gross GST revenues have crossed the `1.40 lakh crore mark,” the Minis- try said. The total number of e-way bills generated in the month of April 2022 was 7.4 crore, which is 4% less than 7.7 crore e-way bills generated in the month of March 2022. Deloitte India Part- ner M S Mani said the stability demonstrated by GST collections ex- ceeding `1.4 lakh crore over the past three months is a good indi- cator of the growth of the economy and ties in with the other macroe- conomic indicators in- cluding the GDP num- bers. “Significant ef- forts in audits and ana- lytics have also led to a drive against tax evad- ers, inculcating a tax compliance culture,” Mani said. ICRA Chief Econo- mist Aditi Nayar said the high year-on-year growth reflects the low base of the second wave. “Nonetheless, the May 2022 GST collec- tions are robust com- pared to the Q4 FY2022 trends, benefitting from improved compli- ance, market share gains by the organised sector as well as the transmission of higher commodity prices into output prices,” Nayar said. Given the trends for April-May 2022, and the anticipation of a sus- tained healthy momen- tum of activity in ab- sence of another wave of COVID and major disruptions, we expect the CGST inflows in FY 2023 to exceed the Budget Estimates level by `1.15 trillion, help- ing to absorb a part of the higher subsidy bill. A vacation bench of Justice Milind Jadhav in its May 30 order, a copy of which was made available on Wednesday, noted that the offence registered against the woman is serious. “But, since the applicant is a pregnant woman, it is the duty of the court to ensure that she and the baby are protected,” said the HC. The woman, Ashwini Son- wane, is cur- rently six months preg- nant with the d e c e a s e d ’ s child. She ap- proached the high court, apprehending arrest in the FIR regis- tered against her at the Yawat police station in Pune under Indian Pe- n a l C o d e Section 306 (abetment of suicide) in April this year, following a com- plaint lodged by her father-in-law. The complaint was lodged after Sonwane’s hus- band Rahul al- legedly commit- ted suicide in April. The de- ceased’s father claimed Sonawane had betrayed his son, and that a month be- fore the incident, she had quarrelled with his son and left for her parents’ housse. However, Sonwane in her plea refuted the al- legations, and claimed her father-in-law had been demanding dowry from her due to which her husband was under stress. The woman fur- ther said her relation- ship with her husband was cordial and that at the time of the alleged incident, she was three months pregnant. The court in its order noted that the offence registered was serious andattractsamaximum punishment of 10 years, if found guilty .
