12. THE WESTERN METRO
FINLAND’S LARGEST
INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT
When completed, the Western Metro
will serve 100,000 passengers every
day. The new 13.9 kilometer-long
stretch of track consists of two parallel
tunnels that will pass underground over
the entire distance. Besides 7 new
stations, 15 vertical shafts, designed for
emergency exits, pressure balancing,
ventilation, and smoke exhaust, will be
excavated. Nine vehicular access tunnels
have also been designed for construction
and servicing.
The Western Metro project has five chief
planners; A-Insinöörit is responsible for
the tasks related to earthworks and
foundation design in the project. The
chief designers oversee the structural
engineering of the Western Metro, are
responsible setting design criteria,
supervise the quality and feasibility of
the designs, and co-ordinate the overall
planning.
13. HELSINKI CITY UNDERGROUND RAIL LOOP,
FINLAND
The City Rail Loop project is a planned urban railway line for
commuter trains under the Helsinki city center. The triple tunnels
run under the very densely-built city center peninsula.
The total length of the new railway line is 8 km, which in tunnel 6
km. The total new tunnels to be constructed is 18 km. Three
underground stations will be built along the new looped railway.
The stations will be constructed under and next to extensive existing
underground infrastructure. This pose challenges in the project
planning and executing that needs to be carefully managed.
15. In 2012, an underground
parking garage for 950 cars
was completed in Tampere. A-
Insinöörit functioned as the
project’s chief consultant. Our
responsibilities included design
direction, the preparation of
contract documents, the
organization of competitive
bidding among contractors, the
direction of design taking place
during the building stage,
construction management, as
well as the contract period’s
expert and local supervision.
The length and volume of the
parking cave being excavated
approximately 30 meters
underneath Hämeentie is
approximately 600 meters and
160,000 m3 respectively. A
total of approximately
200,000m3 of solid earth
materials were excavated in the
project.
