2. DEFINITION
• Linear Equation= an equation that graphs into a straight line.
• Linear Function= a function that can be represented by a linear
equation.
• A linear function can be represented in a lot of different ways –
tables, graphs and equations.
• When you determine that a function is linear, you can find the
domain and range for that function.
3. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LINEAR EQUATION
AND
LINEAR FUNCTION
• A linear equation is an equation involving only one variable
whose highest power is 1 e.g. 2x+4=0, 5x-25=0, x+5=3x-2
• A linear function involves a second variable, like y, and a
variable like x whose highest power is 1 e.g. y=2x+4, y=5x-
25, y=-3x+12,
4. DOMAIN AND RANGE
Domain:
is the set of x-values (or input values) that exist
within the graph or the equation of a function.
Range:
is the set of y-values (or output values) that exist
within the graph or the equation of a function.
5. IDENTIFYING DOMAIN AND RANGE
x
y
a. Name the domain and range for the set of ordered
pairs.
(-5, 2), (-3, -2), (0, 0), (6, -4), (7, 4)
Domain: {-5, -3, 0, 6,7 }
Range: {2, -2, 0, -4, 4 }
