A short presentation by:
Ezequiel Barros
Introduction
•In this presentation we are
going to look at the various
kinds of audio effects and into
their general classification
Introduction
• Audio effects are tools which are extremely
essential for audio production.
• Adding audio effects in a balanced manner can
enhance the sound of the song/track.
• Audio effects can change the type of the sound,
make it flatter, cut out the highs, cut out the
lows, etc...
• Basically, they change the dynamics of the
sound.
Types of Audio Effects
1.Dynamic Effects
2.Delay Effects
3.Filter Effects
Dynamic Effects
• They are the effects related to the amplitude of the sound.
• Types of effects in this category:
• 1. Compressors (reduces or increases amplitude, thereby
loudness, of a audio signal)
• 2. Limiters (Allows signal up to a specified threshold to pass
freely, if level exceeds, it brings it down to the specified
volume)
• 3. Expanders (works to achieve the opposite of audio
compressors)
• 4. Noise Gates (if the signal falls below a certain threshold, it
cuts of the sound.
Delay Effects
• These effects are related to the propagation properties of
sound.
• 1. Reverbs (simulates acoustic environment, giving impression
of space)
• 2. Delay ( records audio and then repeats it after a period of
time)
• 3. Chorus ( overlap of same sound on the original piece of
sound, leading to multiple delayed voices)
• 4. Flanger ( the sound is repeated with a slight delay, and the
amount of delay changes periodically, giving it a “flanging”
effect.
Filter Effects
• Filter effects are related to the tweaking in the timbre of the
sound.
• Some filter effects are:
• 1. High Pass Filter (cuts off high frequencies sounds)
• 2. Low Pass Filter ( cuts off low frequencies sounds)
• 3. Band Pass Filter (cuts off frequencies of a certain specified
range)
• 4. Parametric EQ
• 5. Graphic EQ
• There are some of the very basic types of audio effects which
we come across mostly.
• Tips:
• Go into your DAW of choice or effects unit/plugins and have a
listen to the various effects and how they respond to changes
in their specified parameters.
• Listening to the effects and learning about them is the key to
achieving good sounds in your music.
• Hope this give a basic understanding of audio effects and their
types!
• Feedback is always appreciated!
