Demonstrate two of the three types of modulated short delay effects
1. Demonstrate two of the three types of modulatedshort
delay effects (flanger, phaser, chorus). Describe how they
function and what they are best used for. Be sure to
describe the Delay Time, LFO, Feedback and Dry/Wet
sections.
My name is Sebastian La Rocca, I`m from Buenos Aires
Argentina. I`m a music composer.
This lesson is for week 5 of Introduction To Music Production at
Coursera.org
The delay effect and the filters effect sharethe same type of category.
With shorts delay we make filters and all type of EQ. We also use short
delay effect to create Modulate delay effects: Flanger, Phaser and Chorus.
All of these effects are great to create a senseof width and space in the
Mix, and to create somespace in the middle or centre.
Let’s begin explaining some terms:
Delay Time: The amount of time fromthe Inputto the Output.
Dry/Wet: Mixture between the signalwithout effect (dry) and the delayed
signal (Wet)
Feedback: Is how much the wet signalis routed back to itself
LFO: Low Filter Oscillation, it is an audio signal normally below 20 Hz.
Comb Filter: A signal around 48 samples delayed create a type of filter
called Comb Filter (filter with a series of notches)
Relationshipbetweenfrequency anddelay: A signal 100% wet, whitshort
Delay Time (1 millisecond), as we increasethe feedback the Pitch will
change or emerge. Very quick repetitions increase the sense of frequency.
2. When we put in motion the notches that we created with shorts delays,
changing the delay time, wesaid that wemodulated shortdelays. It`s
moves back and forth creating effects like Chorus, phaser and Flanger.
Flanger: It`s a comb filter, a slight delay that`s put into motion by a Low
frequency oscillator (LFO). Often it`s done differently in the left and right
speaker to give a back and forth wide stereo presence
Phaser: Like a flanger it`s a series of deep notches moving differently in
both speakers giving a stereo effect. It`s nota strict comb filter. Ithas a
series of parameter like frequency, number of notches, how they are
related each other, with those controls we can emphasizeany parameter
and it can sound very vowel. Very useful in guitars and for thick pads to
leave rooms in a mix and also create spaceeffect.
Chorus: Multiple detuned copies. Varying the delay time with a LFO can
have a great impact on the pitch of the sound. It`s seemlike there is
multiple performers performing thesame part. The chorus is done by
making many copies of the same signaland slightly shifting the pitch in all
of them by varying the delay time with a LFO in different ways. Itchanges
the pitches in left and right giving the impression that a single instrument
is being played by multiple people. Is very usefulto make the sound wide
and out to the sides.
Thanks for reading, I hope will be usefulfor you like it was for me.
