Slavonian farmers overwhelmingly prefer an indigenous breed
of pig known as the Black Slavonian, for its meat is considered to
be the best for making superior grade «Slavonski Kulin», a
peppered salami sausage.
The pigs are aged between 12 and 15 months and weigh close
to 150 kilograms. They freely roam the woodlands where they
root for corns and other fruits.
Farmers provide them with additional barley, oats, corn, maize
and large amounts of clover in particular.
It should be pointed out that all pigs are under the constant
supervision of veterinarians both as concerns health propriety and
the hygenic conditions under which they are kept.

The meat of these pigs is of a superior quality, as
has been proved within the industry as well as in the
literature of world-renowned experts, who emphasise
the fact that meat quality is equally dependant on:
breed, free range keeping and foddering.
Farmers in Croatian Slavonia raise and keep their
pigs in the classical manner, in wide open spaces,
fenced in only by pastures and forests.
The pigs move freely outside from early spring all
the way up until the beginning of winter, with some
pigs even spending the entire winter in improvised
forest dwellings.
