2. What is Depression?
Depression is a common but serious illness, and
without treatment can lead to suicide or other
mental illnesses.
}Depression can be characterized by a number of
common symptoms which include a persistent
sad, anxious, or “empty” moods, and feelings of
hopelessness or pessimism.
}According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in
10 adults in the U.S. have depression.
3. Depression and Suicide

1.Itleads people to attempt or commit suicide
which is the 4th leading cause of death in people
between the ages 18-65 years old.
Since 1999, there has been an increase in the rate
of suicide in the American population; this is
related to depression because 90% of suicides
that are committed are a result of depression
4. Positive Outreach – A community
health program
}We have devised a community health program
that would go from high school to high school
and educate our target population – high school
students.
}Due to the nature of the issue, we've decided that
education is the most effective strategy and it
should be the focal point of our program.
6. By educating students on the resources available to
those who suffer from depression, we can prevent
further consequences resulting from depression
related issues, as well as decrease the rates of
depression by people taking early action.
}We hope that by creating a comfortable atmosphere with
leaders who are relatable to the teens we will be
working with, that our population will be much more
receptive and tune into the information we are
providing. We know that depression is not applicable
to everyone, but for those who are affected by it,
