The document discusses a student group's mental health project focused on substance abuse, suicide prevention, anti-bullying, and peer mentoring. For substance abuse, the group wants to partner with organizations to provide transportation to treatment centers. For suicide prevention, they discuss warning signs and the national suicide hotline. Regarding anti-bullying, they note high rates of bullying among LGBT youth and suggest better teacher training. For peer mentoring, the group defines it as lived experience mentors helping others new to an experience. They propose a school program where student mentors help peers through life issues.
3. Substance Abuse
â—Ź My personal experience: Since I
was younger, my mother and
father struggled to fight mental
illness and substance abuse. My
mother, for example, was bipolar
and aturned to hard street drugs
to “fix” those problems. She never
got the mental care that she
needed and refused to take her
medication that would help her.
â—Ź One consequence of mental illness,
sadly, is Substance Abuse. As we know,
there are treatment centers all over
America. However, most addicts don’t
have the access to transportation to
rehab centers or mental health
counseling. If we can partner up with an
organization and create a system of
transportation to and from where the
citizens need to go, we could change the
substance abuse crisis all over the world.
â—‹ We found and researched Hazelden Betty Ford
Foundation and would love to work with them
4. Suicide Prevention
-Suicide is the second leading cause of death ages 10-18.
-A way to prevent suicide is to look out for the warning signs.
-If a friend who has these signs and is not willing to get help
then speak up for them, it is better for them in the end to seek
the help they need.
- Suicide Hotline (1-800-273-8255). Suicide doesn’t just affect the
person, it affects everyone around them. Surviving family
members not only suffer the trauma of losing a loved one to
suicide, they may themselves be at higher risk for suicide and
emotional problems.
5. â—Ź The cause for 2 in 9 children from ages 10-14 taking their own
life, was bullying.
â—Ź school counselors should be taught to better handle bullying
[source]
â—Ź anti bullying measures in school are counterproductive
â—Ź many bullied students are LGBT; 9 in 10 LGBT students bullied
â—Ź 74% of teachers think they could benefit from better training
with cyberbullying [source]
â—Ź Other subgroups of students who get bullied are obese people
or are disabled
Anti-Bullying
6. Why You Should Care
Mental health is an important topic and has a worldwide impact on our
generation and society. People all over the world suffer from mental illness.
From kids to teens to adults, over 450 million people suffer from mental
health. Starting with Autism, to Clinical Depression, to Anxiety, there are 9
types of common mental illness/mental disorder. About every 30 to 40
seconds, someone around the world ends up committing suicide. You
could save thousands of lives if you just volunteer a few minutes to a child
or adult around the world and help them get through their difficult times
that they may face.
7. Peer Mentoring
What peer mentoring is? : a form of mentorship that
usually takes place between a person who has lived
through a specific experience and a person who is new
to that experience.
How peer mentoring would work
â—Ź A school sets up a program where kids will help other kids
through their life problems..
â—Ź The people that are going to be mentors will go through a
course to learn the do’s and dont’s of being a mentor.
How this would be successful
A peer mentoring program would be successful because most kids
8. Nonprofits partnering
We are trying to partner
with the Hazelden Betty
Ford Foundation Project
which is a nonprofit
organization that is a
rehabilitation center that
has volunteers that could
transport addicts to the
rehabilitation centers.
We would like to partner with
United Way because they
provide resources that could
help children whom could be
addicts stay on track and
graduate high school.
