2. WHAT IS A MUSIC VIDEO DIRECTOR?
➤ A music video director is in charge of the production of a music
video. The director adds to the videos' artistic and dramatic aspects
while instructing the musical act, technical crew, actors, models, and
dancers. They may or may not be in collaboration with the musical
act.
➤ On the 8th of November 1992, MTV started to list directors with the
artist, song, and record company credits.
➤ Directors, including Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, and F. Gary Gray,
have gone on to direct feature films, continuing a trend that had
begun earlier with directors such as Lasse Hallström and David
Fincher. The most expensive video of all time was directed by Mark
Romanek: Michael and Janet Jackson's "Scream" (1995), which cost
$7 million to produce.
3. MARK ROMANEK
➤ Mark is an American filmmaker who was
born in Chicago. He has directed: feature
films, television, music videos and adverts.
➤ Romanek was given his first Grammy
Award for Best Short Form Video in 1996
for ‘Scream’ who he worked on with
Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. The
video cost $7 million to make and is cited
as one of the most expensive music videos
ever made.
➤ In 2002, Romanek’s music video for
Johnny Cash’s cover of Nine Inch Nails
‘Hurt” has been called the most personal
and moving music video ever made. It was
nominated for 7 VMAs, winning one for
cinematography and also won Romance
his third Grammy.
4. MICHEL GONDRY
➤ Michel is a French independent film
director, screenwriter, and producer. He is
noted for his unique visual style and
manipulation of mise en scene.
➤ He won an Academy Award for Best
Original Screenplay as one of the writers of
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
(2004), which is often ranked one of the
greatest films of the 2000s.
➤ Gondry directed a total of eight music
videos for Björk. He collaborated with other
artists such as: The White Stripes, The
Vines, Radiohead, The Chemical Brothers,
Beck and Daft Punk.
➤ At the 37th Grammy Awards, Gondry was
nominated in the Best Music Video
category for Lucas Secon’s song ‘Lucas
with the lid off’.
5. DAVID FINCHER
➤ David Andrew Leo Fincher is an American
director and producer known for many
films, television series and music videos.
➤ Fincher has won two Grammy Awards for
Best Music video for his work with The
Rolling Stones on ‘Love is Strong’ (1995)
and with Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z on
‘Suit & Tie’ (2013).
➤ He won 3 MTV Video Music Awards for
Best Direction, being one of the most
awarded directors in the category.
➤ In 1990, he earned three of the four
available nominations in the Best Director
category.
➤ David worked with artists such as: Rick
Springfield, Madonna, George Michael,
Aerosmith and Nine Inch Nails.
