 The monsoon has delivered normal or excess rainfall in 95% of the
country at the end of June with a seasonal rain surplus of 16%, which has
prepared farms and reservoirs to face the drier period that has already
begun. Significantly, rainfall has picked up strongly in Uttar Pradesh and
Bihar, which had a high deficit until last week. Rainfall in Punjab has also
made up for the deficit of the first three weeks of the season. This is
expected to further improve planting of crops.Meanwhile, continuing
heavy showers in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand
are filling up reservoirs that support irrigation and hydropower
generation.Rains are expected to weaken across most of the country except
the Himalayan region and East and Northeast India in the next 24 hours.
From July 4, some parts of South India could receive rain spells.Rainfall
has been below normal for the past five days, bringing down the season's
surplus from 28% to 16%. It is expected to weaken further this week.
Tuesday's rainfall was 18% below average, following a week of 44%
excess (June l8-24). The situation has improved significantly in Northwest
India, particularly in East Uttar Pradesh where till a week ago, the seasonal
deficit was the maximum at 74%, followed by 53% in West Uttar Pradesh,
49% in Uttarakhand and 20% in Punjab. The monsoon rains for June have
ended 12% below normal in East Uttar Pradesh, 4% above normal in West
UP, 12% above normal in Uttarakhand and 9% above normal in Punjab.
Rains in June are expected to boost the planting and aid in germination of
the crop. Coastal Andhra Pradesh has received 97% above normal rain,
followed by 89% in Jammu and Kashmir, 78% in west Rajasthan and 59%
in Saurashtra, Kutch and Telangana.According to agriculture ministry data,
as of June 26, planting was 23% higher than the same time last year at
16.56 million hectare. The total planting this summer season is expected to
be 105.29 million hectares. The Central Water Commission, which
monitors major reservoirs that feed hydropower plants and irrigate fields,
said the situation had improved significantly.
 Turmeric settled down due to limited demand by exporters and
stockiest at current level. Sources are expecting the total production in
the range of 50-52 lakh bags in the current year, down 20 lakh bags
from the last year in the same period. Sources also stated that around
75lakh bags of total stocks have been reported in local mandies. There
is a huge carryover stock in domestic market for the medium quality
turmeric. Sowing of Turmeric in AP for the 2014-15 season is reported
at 0.13 lakh ha, as against 0.1 lakh ha last year. The area in Telangana
stood at 0.446 lakh ha against 0.431 lakh ha last year. As per Spice
board of India, the export for the 2014-15 is 86,000 tonnes worth Rs
744.35 crore compared to 77,500 tonnes and Rs 666.75 crore in FY14.
At Warangal market estimated market supply was at 700 bags, higher
by 200 bags from tuesday’s arrivals. At Erode market total arrivals are
at 2000 quintals, lower by 500 quintals from tuesday’s trading day. At
Sangli market total arrivals are at 1000 quintals, up by 300 quintals
from tuesday’s arrivals. Turmeric growing regions like Madhya
Maharashtra, Coastal A.P, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, and
Karnataka received normal rainfall.
 Jeera settled down account of higher supply from the producing
regions in the midst of a decline in the export demand. As per third
advance estimate of Gujarat State, production is expected at 1.58 lakh
tonnes in 2014-15 which is 54.3 per cent lower compared to last years’
production of 3.46 lakh tonnes. There is concern over production due to
untimely rainfall in March in Gujarat and Rajasthan. As per
Government data, 2.41 lakh hectare of cumin crop is damaged in
Rajasthan.According to latest spice board press release, cumin export is
stood at 155,500 tonnes for 2014-15 period and earned foreign
exchange worth Rs 1,838.20 crore while in 2013-14, the figures stood
at 121,500 tonnes valued at Rs 1,600 crore. At Unjha market in
Mehsana sources reported arrivals at 3000 quintals, higher by 500
quintals from tuesday’s trading day.

 Government of India decided to include pulses after wheat and rice in
BGREI to increase domestic production and reduce dependency on imports.
Bringing Green Revolution to Eastern India (BGREI) is a government aided
scheme in which crops like paddy and wheat are cultivated, funded by
government and are grown in states like West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar,
Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, eastern UP and Assam .
Concern over the rising prices of pulses, government of Rajasthan has
imposed stock limit to retailers and wholesalers. Retailers can have 25 quintals
of pulses and wholesalers can have 2500 quintals of pulses at a time. This
decision will help the prices of pulses to stay low as supply will increase in the
market and market players will not able to hold large amount of stock.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has increased the MSP of
Urad, Moong and Tur to Rs 4625, Rs 4850 and Rs 4625 per quintal
respectively, it include Rs 200 bonus. With emerging short supply and
shooting up prices government has offered bonus of Rs 200 per quintal to
pulses farmers. It will encourage farmers to grow more pulses this year.
According to the local traders, no major damage occurred in Canadian
Pulses by frost and even the warm weather that followed has been ideal for
crop development. They are estimating 3.75 million acres of the lentil crop,
which is well above Statistics Canada’s 3.35 million acre estimate and 3.9
million acres of peas, comprising three million acres of yellow and 870,000
acres of green peas. That is higher in line with Statistics Canada’s 3.83 million
acre estimate.Australian Chickpea is currently being planted and should be
finished in the end of June. Weather condition is favorable and yield may
increase this year as compare to last year. Harvest is set to begin after
September.

  • 4. Commodities In News 4 ECONOMIC NEWS  The monsoon has delivered normal or excess rainfall in 95% of the country at the end of June with a seasonal rain surplus of 16%, which has prepared farms and reservoirs to face the drier period that has already begun. Significantly, rainfall has picked up strongly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which had a high deficit until last week. Rainfall in Punjab has also made up for the deficit of the first three weeks of the season. This is expected to further improve planting of crops.Meanwhile, continuing heavy showers in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are filling up reservoirs that support irrigation and hydropower generation.Rains are expected to weaken across most of the country except the Himalayan region and East and Northeast India in the next 24 hours. From July 4, some parts of South India could receive rain spells.Rainfall has been below normal for the past five days, bringing down the season's surplus from 28% to 16%. It is expected to weaken further this week. Tuesday's rainfall was 18% below average, following a week of 44% excess (June l8-24). The situation has improved significantly in Northwest India, particularly in East Uttar Pradesh where till a week ago, the seasonal deficit was the maximum at 74%, followed by 53% in West Uttar Pradesh, 49% in Uttarakhand and 20% in Punjab. The monsoon rains for June have ended 12% below normal in East Uttar Pradesh, 4% above normal in West UP, 12% above normal in Uttarakhand and 9% above normal in Punjab. Rains in June are expected to boost the planting and aid in germination of the crop. Coastal Andhra Pradesh has received 97% above normal rain, followed by 89% in Jammu and Kashmir, 78% in west Rajasthan and 59% in Saurashtra, Kutch and Telangana.According to agriculture ministry data, as of June 26, planting was 23% higher than the same time last year at 16.56 million hectare. The total planting this summer season is expected to be 105.29 million hectares. The Central Water Commission, which monitors major reservoirs that feed hydropower plants and irrigate fields, said the situation had improved significantly.  Turmeric settled down due to limited demand by exporters and stockiest at current level. Sources are expecting the total production in the range of 50-52 lakh bags in the current year, down 20 lakh bags from the last year in the same period. Sources also stated that around 75lakh bags of total stocks have been reported in local mandies. There is a huge carryover stock in domestic market for the medium quality turmeric. Sowing of Turmeric in AP for the 2014-15 season is reported at 0.13 lakh ha, as against 0.1 lakh ha last year. The area in Telangana stood at 0.446 lakh ha against 0.431 lakh ha last year. As per Spice board of India, the export for the 2014-15 is 86,000 tonnes worth Rs 744.35 crore compared to 77,500 tonnes and Rs 666.75 crore in FY14. At Warangal market estimated market supply was at 700 bags, higher by 200 bags from tuesday’s arrivals. At Erode market total arrivals are at 2000 quintals, lower by 500 quintals from tuesday’s trading day. As per third advance estimate of Gujarat State, production is expected at 1.58 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 which is 54.3 per cent lower compared to last years’ production of 3.46 lakh tonnes. • 5. 5 Fundamental Watch : Chana CHANA ARRIVALS AT KEY SPOT MARKETNational Market Update  Government of India decided to include pulses after wheat and rice in BGREI to increase domestic production and reduce dependency on imports. Bringing Green Revolution to Eastern India (BGREI) is a government aided scheme in which crops like paddy and wheat are cultivated, funded by government and are grown in states like West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, eastern UP and Assam . Concern over the rising prices of pulses, government of Rajasthan has imposed stock limit to retailers and wholesalers. Retailers can have 25 quintals of pulses and wholesalers can have 2500 quintals of pulses at a time. This decision will help the prices of pulses to stay low as supply will increase in the market and market players will not able to hold large amount of stock. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has increased the MSP of Urad, Moong and Tur to Rs 4625, Rs 4850 and Rs 4625 per quintal respectively, it include Rs 200 bonus. With emerging short supply and shooting up prices government has offered bonus of Rs 200 per quintal to pulses farmers. It will encourage farmers to grow more pulses this year. According to the local traders, no major damage occurred in Canadian Pulses by frost and even the warm weather that followed has been ideal for crop development. They are estimating 3.75 million acres of the lentil crop, which is well above Statistics Canada’s 3.35 million acre estimate and 3.9 million acres of peas, comprising three million acres of yellow and 870,000 acres of green peas. That is higher in line with Statistics Canada’s 3.83 million acre estimate.Australian Chickpea is currently being planted and should be finished in the end of June. Weather condition is favorable and yield may increase this year as compare to last year. Harvest is set to begin after September.
