1. Costume Ideas
There are going to be three band members, all wearing
clothing suited to the genre and lifestyle of ‘INDIE ROCK’. The
clothing choice of these members will be popular styles that
young males and females follow but it will have its own
independent touch to it. For example, leather jackets have
become a trend at the moment; it creates a cool, rebellious
look on the majority of people that wear them. Someone
within this lifestyle is likely to wear a leather jacket that has
different materials included on it, for example things like suede
patches, studs and tassels. As it is slightly different to the
known trend and makes the look wilder.
Males within the ‘INDIE ROCK’ look favour wearing dark
coloured skinny fit jeans and a chequered shirt. Then
accessorise the outfit with a woollen beanie and branded
boots like ‘tramp boots’, timberlands and dc martins or trainers
like converses and vans. Ripped up jeans with a vintage vest
and blazer can be considered as a smart indie trend that can be
interpreted into the males costume for the images that will be
included inside and on the front cover of the magazine.
I find the females will choose a look in order to emphasise their
individuality that plays tribute to the ‘INDIE ROCK’ style. This
can consist of ripped up shorts with patterned or even
coloured tights. A baggy cropped jersey top and accessories
that suit the image portrayed. I find that girls within this group
have crazy styles within their hair and makeup. Bright coloured
hair is favoured with black outlined eyes. Apart from a few
features that consist through the ‘Rock Princess’ look, they
don’t pay much attention to their hair and makeup.
I have brainstormed ideas of what I want the band members to
wear in their images. Taking into consideration latest trends
and styles to emphasise what the costumes represent. I will
also look at clothing that relatable bands wear. The female
artist of the group I am considering having her dressed in
ripped or patterned tights, high wasted shorts of a dark colour,
baggy vest top and converse. Her hair and makeup will be style
as specific way, for example messy back combed hair, and
blacked out eyes. The two male band members will be dressed
similarly. They will be wearing dark coloured skinny fit jeans;
one of the males will be wearing a black and red shirt with a
vest visible underneath. Then the male lead will just be
wearing a baggy top or even a vest to show his tattoo. Both
these males have long dark hair that will be style in messy way.

2. Costume Analysis of Relevant Artists
The clothing that all these artists wear is helping to represent their
genre of music. These items of clothing are presenting a rebellious and
rugged look. The inspiration for clothing come from trends that
favourite artists wear, this certain fashion sense comes from the
stereotypical ‘ROCK & ROLL’ lifestyle that people think of. The fans of
popular artists look up to them like role models, fans copy trends of
their favourite artists and other things such as makeup trends, music
advice/tips and hairstyles (dying it crazy colours). Band members
usually have corresponding outfits to show that they are a band; it is
traditional element in the media. Artists in the Indie Rock genre of
music tend to wear dark coloured items of clothing. In these images of
popular Indie Rock bands and artists it is quite easy to pick out popular
clothing that these artists wear, for example denim, and leather
jackets. The men in these images are predominantly wearing
chequered or plain shirts; both smart and casual, some sort of hat;
beanie, snapback, trendy boots, and even a smart blazer. The female’s
wardrobe choices depend on the occasion, but they are usually seen in
dark baggy tops that show flesh, plain/patterned leggings or jeans and
popular styled shoes; converse, creepers.
As my band consists of three members, one female and two males, I am going to narrow my findings and just
focus on Paramore as it is the only known band I know that has both male and female artists in. Each member’s
wardrobe choice in the band Paramore is always similar to each other’s costumes. For example in this image
above each of the band members costume are featuring the colour red. Showing a link between each member of
the band and making sure people are aware they are a band. In this particular image showing the band, there is an
obvious symbiotic link as each member are blowing a bubble with pink bubble gum. Here they are all wearing
different shades of grey and black clothing’s, they are all wearing skinny fit trousers and slim fit t-shirts. It has
become apparent that red and dark grey shades and black are traditional colours used in Paramore’s costume
choices. It changes the stereotypical look that most Indie/Rock/Punk bands have. For fans that are familiar with
Paramore’s music, the clothing including vibrant colours like red can represent the mad upbeat side of the bands
personalities. Bands in this genre of music always go for one of two styles; the first common style is casual clothing
that independently stands out. The second style is a smart approach when it comes to their costume choices.
Paramore alternate these choices, I think the style depends on the occasion.
