1. Location –
As a group, we liked the idea of filming in urban areas, such as Brick Lane (top left). I like the graffiti as it would provide a vibrant, interesting background for a performance
element. Similarly, we like the idea of using coloured lighting (bottom middle) to add excitement and a pop of colour. Other locations that interest us include train stations,
linking to the lyric ‘freight train city’, another way to incorporate trains in a more unusual way is to film in front of abandoned trains. The rust adds an interesting texture, I
also think that it could hint at our character’s reckless, possibly self-destructive, personality. I like the colourful grid created by cargo containers (bottom left), I think that it
evokes a feeling of abstract expressionism, tying into the heavy emotion of our song. I think that, as the song references hypnotism, we could use spiral images, for example,
spiral staircases, mazes, Stonehenge and rock patterns, thus creating a relationship between the lyrics and visuals in a more subtle way. The multiple references to water
throughout the song led me to the idea of filming underwater, I think that the connotations of water being peaceful and relaxing would juxtapose the hectic atmosphere
created by bright locations and/or spirals, helping to create a different tone that would compliment the quieter, mellow parts of our song.
2. Mise-en-scene –
I really like the idea of using dramatic coloured lighting (top left) in our music video. The colours could be used to represent the character’s emotions, as well as creating an energetic
atmosphere that would be reminiscent of a club, this would appeal to a younger audience. I also like the idea of using light bulbs as set decoration (bottom right) as, not only do I think
that they are interesting objects that would liven up a bland background, but the colour would add vibrancy. I think that clocks would make interesting props as their circular shape fits
into the theme of spirals and hypnotism that I mentioned on the previous slide. In terms of costume, I imagine the character to wear loose clothing, possibly bohemian inspired, as this
has links to being free which, in turn, links back to the song lyrics which I interpret to be about escapism. In order to establish a relationship between the lyrics and visuals, as detailed in
Andrew Goodwin’s theory, I thought that the character in the music video could wear white (bottom left), linking to the lyric ‘white threads on my laces’, I think that wearing white
against a bright, colourful background, such as graffiti, would create an eye-catching contrast. The lyric ‘tied ribbons on your top hat’ could be shown by the inclusion of a top hat,
either as a prop or as part of the costume. I like the circular sunglasses shown above as this, again, links with the idea of spirals. In terms of hair and makeup, the group wanted the
character to have smudged mascara and messy, tousled hair in order to present her as being reckless.
3. Word Cloud –
I created a word cloud using ideas and imagery relating to the indie genre and to our song choice, ‘Hypnotic’. This was an effective way to generate new ideas and is
something I can look back on when we start to think of ideas, as a group, for our music video. I have listed colours that I think would be good to use in the video for props,
costume or location, we would need to think of a colour palette so that there is a feeling of fluidity within our video. This has also helped me to think about what the most
important elements of the song and music video are, it is crucial that it fits the indie genre and that themes of emotion and escapism are expressed.
