This was an evaluation of a study I presented in my seminar class for my major.

2. Sesame oil
Oil extracted from sesame seeds
Primarily for eating, but can also be used for cosmetics
Has antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory
properties
Helps in lowering blood sugar and maintaining skin
integrity
3.
4. Osteoarthritis
Also called degenerative joint disease or “wear and tear” arthritis
Most common form of arthritis
15% of the population suffer from osteoarthritis
The risk of developing osteoarthritis is 40% in men and 47% in
women
5.
6. Reactive oxygen species (ROS)
Chemically reactive molecules that contain O2
Generated during oxidative phosphorylation and cellular responses
to xenobiotics, cytokines, and bacterial invasion
Disrupts cell signaling, proliferation, and survival
9. Osteoarthritis induction
Rats were induced with medial meniscal transection (MNX) surgery
Rats were given inhalational anesthetics during surgery
Rats were given cephalexin 1 h before surgery and 12, 24, 36 h after
surgery
10. Experiments
I: Levels of osteoarthritis pain were assessed in both experimental
and control groups 0, 1, 4, 7, and 14 days following Sham or MNX
operation
II: Rat quadriceps muscles were collected 7 days after Sham or MNX
operation. Muscular LPO, GSH, superoxide anion, peroxynitrite
and GPx expression as well as nuclear Nrf2 expression levels
were assessed

Weight distribution Increased
Antioxidant activity Increased
Transcription/translation
of antioxidant enzymes
Increased
Lipid peroxidation Decreased
Summary
20. Discussion
Muscle dysfunction plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of
osteoarthritis and joint pain
Physical therapy has been shown in preventing the development of
osteoarthritis
Increased oxidative stress in skeletal muscle can induce muscle
atrophy
