3. Badjao(bajao)
• ‘‘badjao’’ means man of the seas or "Sea Nomads"
• tribal group is known as the Sea Gypsies because they
move with the wind and the tide on their small
houseboats.
4. History
• Originated in Indonesia and Malaysia
• they have been floating off the shores of Southeast Asia
for around 1500 years.
• However, due to increasing piracy around the 1960’s the
Badjao people were forced off the water and onto land.
5. Lifestyle
• They live in a small house called ‘‘Lepas’’, ‘‘ baluto’’, and
‘‘ vinta’’
• They come to shore to barter their harvests for farmed
produce such as fruits and cassava, as well as,
replenish their supplies and/or make repairs to their
houseboats.
6. Where they live
• the Badjao are scattered along the coastal areas
of Tawi Tawi, Sulu, Basilan, and some coastal
municipalities of Zamboanga del Sur.
7. Contribution of badjao
• They are the most concentrated in the Tawi-Tawi
province in the Sulu archipelago. The Badjao are
traditionally boat-dwelling.
• Among the Badjao exuberance of color used as well as
highly spontaneous geometric and other stylized
symbols set in apart from the Samal mats.
8. Intervention of the government
• an out-reach program entitled “Sama Bajau Brotherhood
Day” at the City of San Fernando, La Union.
• It offered free medical consultation, dental services, free
medicines ect. to around 76 Badjao refugees.

• In Bacolod, they have recovered two money
transfer receipts from those rounded up,
showing that they sent about PHP38,000 in cash
to certain recipients in Mindanao only in
November and December.
